The problem Trump has in this day and age is that threats alone don't work: to get others to do what he wants, he also has to offer something meaningful in return.
As a deeply selfish narcissist, he is incapable of doing that. He's obsessed with humiliating and stealing from others. Especially his "friends" and "allies".
The only way to force Trump to give up an idea is to bully him back. Powerfully, calmly and fearlessly.

Keine Angst, das ist kein exponentielles Wachstum nur ein lineares. Prozentual gesehen geht das Wachstum sogar gegen Null.

Nachteil. Schoko Joghurt, und Wiener würstchen, Tomaten und Gurken bleiben nicht lange im Kühlschrank. Der Lernturm hält die Tür offen und dreckige Löffel und Joghurtbecher finden sich im Geschirrspühler so positioniert, das möglichst viel frisch gewaschenes Geschirr neu gewaschen gehört. Oder Tomatenreste am Lappen können beim Tisch putzen erstaunlich viele Probleme verursachen.
Aber das Kind hat nie mehr Hunger - auch zu Mittag nicht.
Der Elterliche gefühlshaushalt hat seine eigene Faszination. Aus "Himmelhoch jauchzend, zu tode betrübt" wird "Ultra stolz, frustriert betrübt". Wobei glücklicherweise ersteres überwiegt.

Deshalb ist das einzige, was man so von Facebook übernehmen sollte, die Auswahl des Emojis beim Like. Wenn die richtig sortiert sind, könnte man diese unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen auch transportieren.
Gut, auf Facebook wird vor allem der Deppen-Lach-Smiley genutzt, der entweder „ich bin ein Depp“ oder „du bist ein Depp“ heißt, oder halt „lustig!“

bei mir alles außer das letzte. wenn ich eine andere Meinung respektiere, dann sage ich einfach nix dazu. Andere Meinung zu respektieren heißt ja nicht, dass man die auch mögen muss. 😀
Das hängt eben davon ab. Es kann beispielsweise ein gut formulierter, auch nachvollziehbarer Beitrag sein, der mir aufgefallen ist. Dann erhält er vielleicht ein anerkennendes Sternchen und ich kann es trotzdem für meine Situation anders sehen.

Die Gasspeicher sind derzeit mit 44 % so leer wie noch nie zu dieser Zeit und die richtige Kälte kommt erst noch.
#Habeck hätten #Springer und #Nius für diesen Fakt mit Kampagnen sondergleichen überzogen. „GRÜNE GASANGST!“ - „HORRORWINTER!“ - „MÜSSEN WIR BALD ALLE FRIEREN!“ würde auf allen Newsartikeln prangen.
Aber zum Glück haben wir ja eine CDU Gaslobbyistin als Ministerin. Also alles gut.
Übrigens ist die Lage tatsächlich entspannt. Warum? Weil Habeck Flüssiggaskapazitäten ausgebaut hat.

Um genau zu sein: Habeck hat die Änderungen der Mindestfüllstände an letzten Tag seiner Amtszeit unterschrieben. Und die Schaffung der LNG Kapazität war einer der Punkte in der Begründung. Da Kuckucksei hat Habeck Reiche zum Abschied ins Nest gelegt.

Mein Arbeitgeber (IT Consulting Unternehmen) hat die Zeichen der Zeit erkannt und wendet sich mehr und mehr von #Microsoft ab.
Nächste Schritte: Ersatz für MS Office durch #Softmaker Office und #EMClient als Ersatz für Outlook. Und als nächstes schauen wir uns #OpenXChange an.

Mit Gegenzöllen tun wir uns übrigens nur selber weh. Wir sollten lieber Cory Doctorow zuhören und das Antiumgehungsgesetz (und vergleichbare Gesetze) abschaffen.
Das sagt zwar kaum jemandem noch was, ist aber verantwortlich dafür, dass Technik immer schlechter wird und besonders US-Konzerne davon profitieren. Eingeführt wurde es u.a. weil die USA drohten, sonst Zölle einzuführen. Und wenn sie das eh schon machen, hat der Tiger ja seinen Zahn verloren.
Damit würden wir gleich 4 Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen:
1) Angemessene Reaktion auf Trump ohne einen Zollstreit zu riskieren.
2) Keine höheren Preise bei uns durch Gegenzölle.
3) Förderung der heimischen Wirtschaft und Deregulierung an einer sehr sinnvollen Stelle.
4) Maßgebliche Verbesserung unserer Technikgestaltung.

Stattgegeben, aber ich halte das eher für ein Randthema. Schmerzhafter wäre wohl die konsequente Besteuerung und Regulierung der US-Digitalkonzerne aka Big Tech. Dazu gehört auch die Einhaltung der europäischen Datenschutzstandards.
Wenn man sich gerade über die Zölle geeinigt hat und der werte Herr dann wieder mit irgendwelchen Zöllen ankommt, kann man es mit den Verhandlungen auch gleich lassen. Europäische Interessen müssen jetzt einfach durchgesetzt werden.

Ich fürchte nur, dass die ersehnte klarere Positionierung bei unseren Volksvertretern dann in Form von Gegenzöllen daher kommt. Und das find ich halt wirklich keine gute Idee.

Es geht im wesentlichen darum eine Nebenschauplatz zu eröffnen um nicht Erkennen zu Müssen, welche wirtschaftspolitische Niete im Kanzleramt, und Lobby geführten Ministerposten sitzen!
weil Kohl und Merkel ihn nicht wollten und er sein Ego befriedigen musste. Dass da ein Job dran hängt, hat er glatt übersehen.

Merz hält sich halt für schlauer als alle anderen und konnte einfach nicht tatenlos zusehen, wie die dummen faulen Deutschen alles verkacken.

Das letzte Wort in der Bildungswissenschaft ist sicherlich noch nicht gesprochen, aber die Entwicklung weg vom autoritären Erziehungsstill hin zum bedürfnisorientierten Erziehungsstil ist ein enormer Fortschritt. Kinder die bekommen, was sie brauchen und niemals erzieherische Gewalt erfahren, sind später weniger anfällig für Machtstreben, Lüge, Manipulation und antisoziales Verhalten.

Okay, #Linux #Mint ist vom Tisch...
Das mit #Gnome funktioniert zwar wunderbar, aber Linux Mint unterstützt scheinbar keine 32-bit #mesa #Vulkan Treiber, dadurch kann #wine keine 32-bit Grafikprogramme starten.
Ich kenne mich im #Grafik Stack Null aus, daher kann ich das nicht fixen.
Also erstmal wieder back to PopOS, mal sehen...

Nee, ich kann da ja keine Daten hochladen, ist ja ein lokaler Client, nix was ich aus nem Launcher starten kann.

I am pretty sure there is a way to use 32-bit Vulkan, since both Mint 22 and PopOS are based on the same Ubuntu 24.04 system. Probably they're preinstalled on Pop and on Mint you have to install it yourself. I would suggest running these commands on Mint:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo apt install [whatever driver you want]:i386
On my LMDE install I have mesa-vulkan-drivers both for amd64 and i386 installed
I've tried this - that's one of the first things one finds by googling this - but it does not work.
And no, my PopOS is not based on 24.04, it is the old one with Gnome, so it is still 22.04. As I want to keep Gnome I am not able to upgrade.
well then, I recommend trying out Debian or better yet - LMDE

I personally prefer LMDE due to the fact that I can utilize Debian Backports. Thanks to that I still have rock-solid, stable base for my system, as well as kernel 6.17.13 and Mesa 26.2.6

Unsere liebe Bahn mal wieder. Die Website zeigte mir einen RE 5 nach Köln an, ab 13:00 Uhr am Gleis 4. Dort angekommen stellte ich fest, daß die Anzeigetafel nichts davon weiß. Der gelbe Fahrplan schlug vor, auf Gleis 16 zu gehen, um einen RE 6 zu erreichen. Die Anzeige auf Gleis 16 wußte nur von Fernzügen nach München. Dann fragte ich transportr. Das nannte mir einen RE 6 ab Gleis 7. Und das stimmt auch. Ich sitze gerade drin und warte auf die Abfahrt um 13:12 Uhr. Damit komme ich gerade noch pünktlich zur Kundgebung. Ich wollte einklich früher dort gewesen sein.

Nicht in der Detailebene, wie jene, die „zu managen“ waren, aber durchaus nicht ahnungslos.
Womöglich hätte ich bei einigen wenigen davon gewünscht, selbst ahnungsloser zu sein, denn es verletzt ziemlich, Bullshit aufgetischt zu bekommen, wenn man sich selbst sehr darum bemüht, dass es für alle im Team passt und dafür dann auch die Prügel von „oben“ auf sich nimmt. Das waren nur einige wenige, aber genug, dass ich es nicht nochmal machen wollte.
sobald man eine größere Abteilung leitet, ist das unvermeidlich, dass da Leute sind, die eine Arbeit machen, die man selbst nicht machen könnte. Aber das ist wirklich nicht der Job, wenn man eine Abteilung leitet.

LLMs are spam generators. That is all.
They're designed to generate plausibly human-like text well enough to pass a generic Turing Test. That's why people believe they're "intelligent".
But really, all they are is spam generators.

Love your fiction, can't agree on this take. Spam does not help with writing code, whereas LLM's can be extremely helpful.
LLM's are not generally intelligent. They can be immensely problematic, but to dismiss them as merely spam generators as you have, or "parrots" as others have is simply incorrect.
@ViennaMike You're using code generators. Not the same thing, frankly. Stop generalizing your experience as a developer to the public at large, who only see magic talking box.

@VictimOfSimony If you want to debate whether or not, as a whole, LLMs are a net positive or net negative, I agree. Intelligent people can legitimately disagree. One cannot, based on the evidence, legitimately claim that they only produce spam.
I'll let @cstross speak for themselves, but I really do see this as a "define your spam" situation. The same problem led to the crossbows/harquebus debate that led to the Pope banning crossbows but not firearms. The problem is that spam's a byword for low value material of any sort, slop or not, and the idea of high-quality advertising sounds like a waste of the technology. No person off the street will ever care how high quality your product propaganda is; the material is always worthless and unwanted. The Pope didn't hate all violence, he hated the idea of the serfs killing the upper class. When confronted with two ways to let peasants put holes in plate armor with minimal training they only banned the one that didn't tend to blow up and didn't require a synthesized chemical fuel. As the technologies both advanced war didn't stop, but soldiers stopped wearing armor and as a result eventually stopped fighting in tight formations. What we're going to see with L.L.M. is the technology being run by services that charge per question and licensing of systems that are capable of spitting out reliable answers. 
Is that better?

As a #PublicPolicy wonk I'm already remembering how different our common law legal systems have become in just three centuries. Over here they're still worried about the anti-porn #Censorship case where the #SupremeCourt refused to define what they were censoring. They famously said, "I know it when I see it," grumble grumble prurient use in commerce, harrumph typical opinion of ordinary firmness, followed by thirty years of chipping off corners without admitting they were sort of making shit up.
So the experience of developers who have found significant value from the use of LLM's doesn't count or isn't valid?
Used to WRITE material, they aren't great. But to organize, summarize, do research and help brainstorm, they can be useful.
While ChatGPT currently can't pass the IRS' volunteer tax assessor's exam (see mcgurrin.info/robots/8298/), I have confidence that a RAG based system could do so.
Heck, COMPUTERS are magic to most people, as are the internet, radios and TV.

Other, far larger, more comprehensive, studies show measured, meaningful productivity improvements. Sure there's some real helpful use cases for LLMs.
I reckon if the LLM industry manages to settle down into supplying only the helpful sensible use cases for LLMs, it will be about as big - in terms of annual dollar throughput - as eg the electric kettle manufacturing sector.
But to get to that sustainable level the LLM industry would have to shrink its market cap by 3 orders of magnitude. And it probably can't do that without collapsing entirely.

@ThePowerNap @dragonfrog @ViennaMike I suspect that it'll be good for the ML space -- the conflation of LLM prompting with the harder skills required to actually train a model has been disastrous for the market. The industry isn't sophisticated enough for people to distinguish between the two skillsets, so the latter market has just been absolutely deleted in Australia.

IMO shifting goalposts here indicate that we have an improved, yet still incomplete understanding about how intelligence may be defined, rather than dismissing intelligence because we don't like the looks of it.

Put another way: LLMs have revealed a zero-day exploit in human consciousness and culture: if you can manufacture plausibility at scale, you can bypass all of the accumulated wisdom of centuries of skepticism and critical thinking. Any fact-using profession is potentially vulnerable to this attack.

@talin not a first for LLMs/AI, seems like the MAGA movement achieved the same ages ago. With no trace of Intelligence, artificial or not.
Because so many people boosted my post, I want to explore this topic in more detail.
First, a thought experiment: suppose we had cheaply scalable mind control, even if partially effective (LLMs are not mind control but they touch some of the same wires). Democracy would end, since the controllers could sway elections at will. The so-called free market would instantly become a command economy. Science, and any other activity requiring independent thought, would be a dead letter.
In the book _Rainbows End_, Vinge proposes a form of mind control called "YGBM" technology, which stands for "You Gotta Believe Me", a way to get affected individuals to accept arbitrary propositions as truth.
What this has in common with LLMs is technologically enhanced plausibility.

One of the execs at $CURRENT_OVERLORD wrote a blog post about passing the Turing Test. He raved about the AI that could fool him. But that famous feat has long ago ceased to measure the capabilities of a computer program, and instead started to measure the limitations of human perceptions.
When the current gen of chat bots can fool you, it isn't because they're matching levels of human capabilities now. They're exploiting levels of human weaknesses.

I wrote an essay draft in my masters (early 2000s) against the Turing test as proof of intelligence. There I said that if a similar approach were taken to study life, we would be assigning life to strawmans as they seem alive enough to scare crows (at least to them). Instead, I proposed an #EcologyOfIntelligence where the key is not imitation but completariety/synergy between intelligences: individual, collective, human, non human, etc.

Well, they are statistical models of language. To be precise, the corpus they were trained on, and there are a number of other aspects, like representation, what cleanups were applied.
Yes, one way to use these models, the one that seems to fascinate most people (but IMHO not necessarily the most useful, depending upon what one wants to achieve), is to complete a prefix with a plausible ending, statistically speaking.
Generally, they are a compelling NLP technology.
I understand what you mean, but I’d say they’re simply databases. Spam generator is one of their many uses.
The Turing Test will not fail an LLM for the same reason humans are ready to accept them as persons: humans evolved with a hardcoded behavior to perceive any language-using process as a cognitive entity and create a mental model of it. Rejecting that behavior takes a metacognitive ability that has not been taught to most people, so the problem isn’t rampant stupidity (look at how many clearly intelligent AI researchers fail this test) but rather ignorance, sometimes wilful, granted.
3 years ago I came up with github.com/tanepiper/Stochasti… as a way to test the then new OpenAI APIs - after a month it became very clear to me that all someone needs is $100 and a GitHub pipeline and you could quite easily create a spam farm. No need to hire pesky humans for $1 a day - it was probably the first job taken by AI

I believe we had "spam" long before LLMs, and it was generated just fine. Blame computers!
It's the title of a novel, pinned on it by the publisher in 2002 ("The Singularity is hot this year") originally called "Festival of Fools". Authors don't always get the title they want.
(It could also be because I wrote "Accelerando", then, later (with Cory Doctorow) "The Rapture of the Nerds".)

I've received feedback from people in AI firms who attest that my analysis is accurate.
We're in a ridiculous mania and it's clear that the mania is going to collapse. I've used GenAI regardless to create what amounts to minor and reasonably creative bits of humor. The use of GenAI for this purpose can be criticized for cooperating by implication with the mania. However, it doesn't come across as reasonable or educated to use a generic term to instead slap somebody without cause.
If you feel the need to block somebody who has spoken clearly and politely, it's your prerogative. It does seem like a reflexive reaction worthy of a Twitter denizen and that is stated as politely as possible.
It isn't what I expected of an author who wrote the masterpiece that the image cleverly referenced. The reference, to be clear, was mine and not that of a GenAI or LLM. I might add that I was working on my honors thesis on neural nets when you were scarcely out of short pants.
If we do communicate further, you are not to equate me without cause with the nigh-trolls who are flooding multiple venues with content that has no value at all.

Bis heute zahlt die deutsche #Wissenschaft jedes Jahr Millionen an #Elsevier.

Sitze hier in Merino-Unterwäsche mit dicken Skisocken und warte darauf, dass der Sonnenaufgang näher kommt, denn: heute ist internationale Wasservogelzählung. An diesem Wochenende werden weltweit auf Wasserflächen Vögel gezählt. Das hilft dabei, die Gesamtbestände von Wasservögeln zu ermitteln. Diese Zählung wird in Deutschland und vermutlich auch überall sonst komplett vom Ehrenamt durchgeführt.
Ich bin dabei und zähle einen Teil der Kieler Förde. Natürlich mit Fahrrad.

für die BOS wäre am praktischsten, wenn das auf das TetraBOS-Netz aufbauen würde. Wenn es hier die Möglichkeit geben würde selbst Basisstationen und DXT aufzubauen und per Richtfunk auch regional zu verbinden. Dann könnte man die bestehende Technik (Funkgeräte) weiter verwenden und müsste für Endgeräte nicht im Einsatz tauschen und sich nicht umgewöhnen in der Bedingung.
mir geht es bei #Meshcore auch um die Kommunikation mit der Bevölkerung - einen Meshcore-Companion für 50€, gekoppelt mit dem Smartphone als Endgerät, könnte man gut im Notfallrucksack vorhalten. Betriebstechnisch simpler als Amateurfunk wäre das allemal.

Viele Menschen aus den Feuerwehren, die sich mit Katastrophenszenarien beschäftigen, machen ihren Funkamateurschein und ich denke auch, das ist eine gute Idee. Außerdem sollte man m.E. über UKW/KW/MW/LW Radiolösungen für den Desasterfall nachdenken, falls mal alles digitale zusammenbricht. @thw
@Andreas_Sturm mein Gedanke dreht sich jedoch nur in zweiter Linie um die interne Kommunikation - mir geht es primär um Kommunikationswege, über die Hilfsorganisationen von den Bürgern erreicht werden oder mit deren Hilfe die Menschen untereinander kommunizieren können. Dazu könnte man zwar auch PMR446 nehmen, doch da ist Relais- oder Repeaterbetrieb untersagt und daher die Reichweite arg begrenzt. LoRa-Systeme arbeiten aber mit Repeatern und haben daher potentiell große Reichweiten - und da es außerdem Textkommunikation ist und keine Sprache, kommt es hier auch seltener zum „Quasselfunk“. Ich finde, einen Versuch (Pilotprojekt) wäre es wert.

Gestern am U-Bahn-Steig eine am Boden kauernde Gestalt, an eine Säule gelehnt. Erst auf den 2. Blick sehe ich, es ist einfach nur ein junges schmales blondes Mädchen, vielleicht 13 Jahre, halbhockend auf ihrem Rucksack, völlig versunken in ihrem auf dem Schoß aufgeschlagenen Buch.

Geklärt, sie macht das Dach nicht zu 😍 Meine Nachbarin hat seit geraumer Zeit ein Eichhörnchen im Dach. Wie es da genau aussieht, weiß ich nicht. Sie hat es sich auch noch nicht angeschaut. Es kommt von außen unter das (ungedämmte) Kaltdach und hat dort im vergangenen Jahr ihre Jungen großgezogen. Man sah es ab und zu außen an der begrünten Fassade herumturnen.
Auch jetzt wohnt es dort. Die Nachbarin möchte den Zugang schließen und ich finde das nicht besonders toll.

ich würde als erstes mal fragen _warum_ sie das denn zu machen will. befürchtet sie schäden? dann könnte man ihr vllt klar machen dass eichhörnchen keine schäden machen, sind ja keine waschbären. und dann mit wurzelmanns rat nachsetzen :3
Alles prima. Sie hat sofort entschieden, das Dach nicht zu schließen. Es ging ihr wohl um eine Dämmung. Das Haus ist uralt…und sie kann darauf verzichten. Den Wohnkomfort würde es nicht steigern. Den ersten Stock (das Stockwerk unter dem Dachgeschoss) bewohnt sie ohnehin nicht mehr.
