Leaf Cutter Ant Debris Piles?
@myrmepropagandist I was at the American Museum of Natural History yesterday. Watching the leaf cutters, I noticed piles of brown dust-like material outside the glass bulbs that serve as fungus growing chambers. There were piles outside most of the chambers, empty, full, or partly full.
My guess is that they were piles of dead ants. The docent didn't know.
I'm wondering whether you have a second to tell me what they were.

Good find! The mushrooms are Lichenomphalia umbellifera. A lichen, actually. The algal component is tiny green bubbles on the wood surrounding the fruiting body.

I am so sad to hear Pope Francis has died. He was the absolute best of what the Catholic Church can represent - humble, standing up for immigrants & the poor and marginalized.
I truly believe he used his last strength standing up to forces of evil, including those twisting Catholicism.

May we instead speak up and act on behalf of those less fortunate, in favor of justice and what is right. Pope Francis did so on Easter. After he met JD Vance, his deputy read an Easter prayer supporting migrants.
I don’t know that there is another figure who can fill the void in the same way as Pope Francis did, other than a new Pope who espouses similar teachings and actions. May he rest in peace and may we collectively step up to have similar impact.

My hope is that left-leaning people finally realize it’s bad to stay home because whatever candidate is on the ballot isn’t quite right on some issue that’s important to them. You can hold your nose and vote for imperfect candidates or you can kiss more of our freedoms goodbye. Those are the choices we have. 😬
Anyone who didn't vote, voted for Jill Stein or voted for trump are complicit and need to be held accountable for their action. Period.

Arina, who will also be 7 forever. 9-year-old German. 15-year-old Danylo. 15-year-old Nikita. 15-year-old Alina. Konstantin, who will be 16 forever. Nikita is 17 years old. These are the children who were killed by a Russian ballistic missile strike on Kryvyi Rih.

I'm reminded of these incredible supermarket staff who are the opposite of everyone fearfully erasing websites & social programmes in the US now. They braved vilification too, only belatedly being recognised as principled people who inspired a mass boycott.

@gpumoto Agreed! An ordinary shopper has no chance of working out the supply chain details of individual products on the fly to work out whether a US corporation benefits from a purchase. This idea streamlines it for quick choices - at least we know the product is either made in Europe or sold by a European company, so Not American.

Drop what you're doing and read this incredible story, which recounts how a reporter for The Atlantic was inadvertently included in a private Signal discussion group that appears to have included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Sec. of State Marco Rubio and other administration officials discussing plans for an upcoming U.S. military assault on Yemen.
The reporter, Jeff Goldberg, said he was convinced it was all an elaborate hoax as they laid out the pros and cons of specific attack options, and discussed targets over the course of a week. That is, until they shared on the Signal chat exactly where and when the targets in Yemen would be hit, and then those targets got hit exactly when they'd said.
"The world found out shortly before 2 p.m. eastern time on March 15 that the United States was bombing Houthi targets across Yemen."
"I, however, knew two hours before the first bombs exploded that the attack might be coming. The reason I knew this is that Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, had texted me the war plan at 11:44 a.m. The plan included precise information about weapons packages, targets, and timing.
"According to the lengthy Hegseth text, the first detonations in Yemen would be felt two hours hence, at 1:45 p.m. eastern time. So I waited in my car in a supermarket parking lot. If this Signal chat was real, I reasoned, Houthi targets would soon be bombed. At about 1:55, I checked X and searched Yemen. Explosions were then being heard across Sanaa, the capital city."

@dredmorbius @Dhmspector the auto delete is an optional setting in signal. But signal is one of the more secure messengers available, end to end encrypted and without a possibility of a backdoor. I see why they'd use that.
@Wolfi As I've seen discussed elsewhere, there are other problems presented:
- Smartphones themselves are conspicuously insecure, and even the use of secure protocols and apps leaves other avenues of attack on the device open.
- Signal apparently has provisions for sharing or forwarding conversations, and at least one of the discussion participants was in Russia at the time of the discussion, which ... raises further concerns.
- Features which would be desirable for secure comms (e.g., ACLs, or ensuring that all members of a given discussion have specific security clearances) are missing from the app. If one could, say, issue invites to a group of people and only permit those with specific certifications / security clearances from participating, joining, or even being notified of the discussion the picture would be improved, though other issues (mentioned above or otherwise) could still present themselves.
- Casual observations from public use / use outside SCIF could present information leaks.
OpSec is exceedingly poor here.
What nobody is talking about yet is how badly this will damage our already frayed relations with our major allies, who will be rightfully horrified of sharing any sensitive intelligence with a bunch of bumbling nitwits sending thumbs-up emojis.

the damage they're doing to the nation is like letting a bunch of house flippers at the "spackle with toothpaste" level have tools, equipment, and years of unrestricted access to a hundred story skyscraper while they scream about the evils of rebar, rivets and cement. Even after they're gone you have no idea just what they've broken and unless you gut the building and inspect *everything* you'll be dealing with their damage for years.
Trump destroyed trust almost immediately by destroying the US, Canada, and Mexico trade agreement he negotiated and signed by threatening tariffs. His government's behaviour since then has to destroy trust with all long-standing US allies across all parts of the relationship.
True I am traveling in Germany now and the shock of the idiocy about this is in all cable news from here and other countries, BBC, France 24, etc.

Calling Goldberg's coverage of this monumental and unprecedented OPSEC fail by a US presidential administration "sensationalist" is beyond the pale. Given the volume of sensitive information shared with him unsolicited via Signal, Mr. Goldberg's reporting demonstrated that he exercised remarkable restraint in not publishing a great deal of what he was given.
Whether it's sending Com kids in to monkey with taxpayer databases, setting up Starlink antennas on top of the White House complex for "faster Wi-Fi," or granting TS/SCI clearances to anyone without a thorough background check, this administration’s overall approach to security measures is to go around them, or just pretend they don’t exist for a good reason.
The administration is really hoping they can just sweep this one under the rug. That can't be allowed to happen, because this is not going to be an isolated event.

I thought 'DUI hire with prison gang tattoos' Hegseth's denial was interesting. Technically he's correct that he didn't share classified material via text message - if by 'text message' you mean traditional SMS or RCS carried by cell carriers.

Reading this post, I imagined it in the voice of Humpty Hump. And it works.
@drwho that's unfair to Humpty. He has excellent opsec. He once got busy in a Burger King bathroom and no one knew until he told us about it, long after the operation was complete.

this is really bad Opsec. There is an inadvertent negative though. Unfortunately Signal is now being called "unsecure" by media, which is not the same in this context as "insecure" I hope that part doesn't stick to the Signal Foundation in people's minds.
They shouldn't be using Signal, but only because it wasn't approved by the government for use. Signal is secure. It's just not DOD approved on device or for this sensitive govt communication.
