Drop what you're doing and read this incredible story, which recounts how a reporter for The Atlantic was inadvertently included in a private Signal discussion group that appears to have included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Sec. of State Marco Rubio and other administration officials discussing plans for an upcoming U.S. military assault on Yemen.
The reporter, Jeff Goldberg, said he was convinced it was all an elaborate hoax as they laid out the pros and cons of specific attack options, and discussed targets over the course of a week. That is, until they shared on the Signal chat exactly where and when the targets in Yemen would be hit, and then those targets got hit exactly when they'd said.
"The world found out shortly before 2 p.m. eastern time on March 15 that the United States was bombing Houthi targets across Yemen."
"I, however, knew two hours before the first bombs exploded that the attack might be coming. The reason I knew this is that Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, had texted me the war plan at 11:44 a.m. The plan included precise information about weapons packages, targets, and timing.
"According to the lengthy Hegseth text, the first detonations in Yemen would be felt two hours hence, at 1:45 p.m. eastern time. So I waited in my car in a supermarket parking lot. If this Signal chat was real, I reasoned, Houthi targets would soon be bombed. At about 1:55, I checked X and searched Yemen. Explosions were then being heard across Sanaa, the capital city."
"I went back to the Signal channel. At 1:48, โMichael Waltzโ had provided the group an update. Again, I wonโt quote from this text, except to note that he described the operation as an โamazing job.โ A few minutes later, โJohn Ratcliffeโ wrote, โA good start.โ Not long after, Waltz responded with three emoji: a fist, an American flag, and fire. Others soon joined in, including โMAR,โ who wrote, โGood Job Pete and your team!!,โ and โSusie Wiles,โ who texted, โKudos to all โ most particularly those in theater and CENTCOM! Really great. God bless.โ โSteve Witkoffโ responded with five emoji: two hands-praying, a flexed bicep, and two American flags."
"I have never seen a breach quite like this. It is not uncommon for national-security officials to communicate on Signal. But the app is used primarily for meeting planning and other logistical mattersโnot for detailed and highly confidential discussions of a pending military action. And, of course, Iโve never heard of an instance in which a journalist has been invited to such a discussion."
U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didnโt think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.Jeffrey Goldberg (The Atlantic)

The NYT is reporting that the National Security Council has confirmed the screw up:
โAt this time, the message thread that was reported appears to be authentic, and we are reviewing how an inadvertent number was added to the chain,โ Brian Hughes, the National Security Council spokesman, said in an emailed statement. He called the thread โa demonstration of the deep and thoughtful policy coordination between senior officials.โ
"Several Defense Department officials said that having the type of conversation that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and others had in a Signal chat group could be a violation of the Espionage Act. Revealing operational war plans before planned strikes could also put American troops directly into harmโs way, the officials said."

Of course, the White House claims no classified data was shared. What else would they say?
Calling Goldberg's coverage of this monumental and unprecedented OPSEC fail by a US presidential administration "sensationalist" is beyond the pale. Given the volume of sensitive information shared with him unsolicited via Signal, Mr. Goldberg's reporting demonstrated that he exercised remarkable restraint in not publishing a great deal of what he was given.
Whether it's sending Com kids in to monkey with taxpayer databases, setting up Starlink antennas on top of the White House complex for "faster Wi-Fi," or granting TS/SCI clearances to anyone without a thorough background check, this administrationโs overall approach to security measures is to go around them, or just pretend they donโt exist for a good reason.
The administration is really hoping they can just sweep this one under the rug. That can't be allowed to happen, because this is not going to be an isolated event.
From the NYT:
"Two of the Trump administrationโs top intelligence officials denied that classified information was shared in an encrypted group chat in which details of an attack on Yemen were discussed in the presence of a journalist who had been mistakenly added to the conversation."
"The Senate Intelligence Committee is holding a previously scheduled briefing on global threats with Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence; John Ratcliffe, the C.I.A. director; and the F.B.I. director, Kash Patel. Pressed repeatedly about the security breach, Ms. Gabbard and Mr. Ratcliffe both denied that classified material had been shared in the chat. Mr. Patel declined to say if the F.B.I. had begun an investigation."
"The White House also sought to downplay the serious nature of the extraordinary security breach, as bipartisan criticism of the incident grew on Tuesday and leading Democrats called for the resignation of the national security adviser, Michael Waltz, who set up the group chat, and the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, who reportedly shared classified war plans in it."
Here are the latest developments:
Defending Waltz: President Trump defended Mr. Waltz, saying in an interview with NBC News that the national security adviser had โlearned a lessonโ and suggested a staff member was to blame for including a journalist in the secret group chat.
Bipartisan criticism: The vice chairman of the intelligence committee, Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia, denounced what he called โsloppy, careless, incompetent behaviorโ by the countryโs top intelligence officials. Representative Don Bacon, Republican of Nebraska and a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, told reporters that the White House should โbe honest and own upโ to what happened.
"Damage control: The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said no classified material was sent to the group chat, and she attacked the journalist who revealed it, Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, as โsensationalist.โ Her statement came a day after Mr. Hegseth suggested the leak was a โhoaxโ even as the White House confirmed that messages he sent to it appeared to be authentic."

this is really bad Opsec. There is an inadvertent negative though. Unfortunately Signal is now being called "unsecure" by media, which is not the same in this context as "insecure" I hope that part doesn't stick to the Signal Foundation in people's minds.
They shouldn't be using Signal, but only because it wasn't approved by the government for use. Signal is secure. It's just not DOD approved on device or for this sensitive govt communication.

One of the interesting things about Mont St Michel is that there's two of them. Sort of.
There is Mont St Michel in Normandy and, over the other side of the English Channel, there is St Michael's Mount in Cornwall. They are both tidal islands with medieval buildings on them and they share a name, though I will admit that the French version is the more impressive looking of the two.

Wow. The US Treasury Dept. today announced it is lifting sanctions on Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixing service that state-sponsored hackers from North Korea have been massively using to launder their stolen billions.
"Based on the Administrationโs review of the novel legal and policy issues raised by use of financial sanctions against financial and commercial activity occurring within evolving technology and legal environments, we have exercised our discretion to remove the economic sanctions against Tornado Cash as reflected in Treasuryโs Monday filing in Van Loon v. My guess is, there'd have been a Business Plot 2.0 pretty quickly, and the Tea Party would have resorted to violence even more quickly.
One of the things we're seeing in the modern day is that the fascism exists to protect the bigotry and inequality. It became stronger in an attempt to prevent a better world from happening. The Americans on this thread can at least agree that we need to come together in this moment, and leave inter-party squabbles in the past.
@mls14 I donโt agree with that at all. The people right now who are saying that we need to โleave inter-party squabbles in the pastโ are the people who are themselves actively attacking people within their own party and their own base. Guys like Schumer consistently side with Republicans, guys like Bernie Sanders and AOC have consistently sided with the working class, but it is Sanders, AOC, and their ilk who are most often attacked as โsewing discord,โ especially in the mainstream media.
So I embrace inner-party squabbles, and more than squabbles, an all-out war between people who represent the working class and people who represent the oligarchs. If we canโt purge the Democratic party of pro-oligarchy candidates like Chuck Schumer, and also people like Joe Biden, the Clintons, and the Obamas, then the Democratic Party will only ever be nothing more than an extension of Trump and the Republican Party, more than worthless, positively toxic.
Much to unpack here.
A lot of people in the US[1] have been convinced that protest is useless.
In fact, our mass movements have repeatedly been sabotaged from without and within. See Occupy.
The "politics as usual" for the last 50 years has been pretty uninspiring. I know people on the Internet hate "both sides" arguments, but they do hold some water. Yes, both sides are bad, and one side is orders of magnitude worse. Which is why I voted for Harris-Walz. Nevertheless, we wouldn't be where we are without Democrats enabling Republicans, since they answer to the same donor class, rather than the people. Bernie and AOC are trying to do something about this.
Our complex of government and corporations has succeeded wildly with bread and circuses and divide and rule. Though more and more of the bread is being taken away, and the circuses are more and more expensive. Divide and rule is still in full swing. Between these two strategies of the ruling class, people are kept off the street unless the problem directly affects them.
When US citizens do get out in the streets en masse, I expect that it will be violent. As H. Rap Brown said, "Violence is as American as apple pie." If the military is used against the populace, I'd note that the US military is historically very bad at maintaining an occupation. See Iraq, see Vietnam.
[1] I've even heard this "protest is useless" stuff from Canadians. I hate that form of cynicism.

@rzeta0 @davbram @nilsskirnir Ok, so instead of admitting that the UK also has issues, the reply-guy blocks me.
Itโs so easy to trash others instead of working together to solve problems. All this anger came because I dared to say we should work together. Think about who you are helping if you oppose putting our differences aside to oppose Nazis.
I love AOC and Bernie. I want this to be a chance to come together. But itโs not helpful for people to refuse to vote if they donโt get the candidate they want from their party.
We need to play the long game. Keep Democrats in power, and push them to the left during primary season. You cannot do anything if MAGA holds majorities in all 3 branches of government.
@rzeta0 @davbram @nilsskirnir A reply-guy from the nation of Brexit and 14 straight years of Tories is telling Americans that they are โconfidently wrongโ about their own country, which theyโve lived in their whole lives.
Youโve got more than enough to worry about at home; stop fomenting discord and helping the Nazis in America. Because thatโs the result of this kind of commentary.
@davbram @nilsskirnir @rzeta0 Yes, you are part of the solution. We might not have all gotten the candidate we wanted from our party. But we know, for the good of the country, we come together to oppose Nazis.
I disagree with you strongly on multiple aspects of your opinion of Harris, but we can work together because we both know itโs about never ever letting the GOP get a majority again.
That's it.
That's the plan "to take on billionaires and win our country back", while some 80 #DOGE crooks with laptops continue with dismantling the US, this very moment, day by day.
I find this pretty over simplified and personally, I'd absolutely much rather see leaders reaching out and talking to thousands of people than hiding from American people and even avoiding town halls

It's not difficult to find these alternatives, and some have already been mentioned by others in this thread.

@unifex somehow people prefer to spend time coming up with reasons why not to switch, than finding ways to make the switch work in the imperfect world we inhabit.
So I am not going to dive into that kind of discussion.
Instead, I am pointing out that Discord is a proprietary, centralized, VC-funded platform that is starting to enshittify โ so that people get a nudge to try to find their own solutions. For those that can't be bothered to do that, me offering suggestions would not help either.

Either we recognize this and make a conscious effort to support ethical tech even if it's not as slick, or we are doomed to pikachu-face.
Any people reading this who rely on Discord: this is your nudge to consider moving elsewhere.Where? I don't know. What I do know is that whatever alternative I suggest, you will find a myriad of reasons why it just "won't cut it."
But I also know that if resources were spent on making the hard-to-enshittify decentralized platforms better, they would get better, while still remaining hard to enshittify.
So, perhaps it's worth it to trade some short-term convenience for long-term resilience. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I mean, the enshittification was going on for a while already, with nitro nagging, quests on desktop client (thankfully easy to disable lul), and quite a few other annoyances - the only surprising part is the relatively slow tempo of this going on.
It would definitely be nice to have something decent enough for larger communities - like I guess there is Matrix but I have heard quite a few horror stories about it. At least for a Reddit and trad forums replacement there is kbin and lemmy which I heard work decently well, and for more public social media there is masto/akko/*key stuff - but for instant messaging things seem to be in major pain, which makes me sad.
@TheDailyBurble
The point of ads (from large companies) is to create needs. Easiest way to do so is to trigger survival instict: humans are a social animal, so being separated from herd is a death sentence.
If ads don't work on you, it's due to you not being their target segment. They're then easy to ignore. That's why large part of marketing is targeting: that the right people (eg. victims) see the ad.
Ads work. If they didn't, they wouldn't do it. And the cost for society is high.
@TheDailyBurble
We may be speaking past each other. I was talking of products on saturated markets such as cola-drinks or clothes. Also in general international companies are badly in touch with the needs of local populace, so they find it easier to change needs.
I've worked in marketing as well (briefly), but more importantly have two degrees that border the subject.
@iju
The fantasy ads are whale-sales, short term impulse buyers. The (far) bigger market is people who are looking for a product that addresses their needs at a reasonable price.
To get from A to B, I'm never going to need a Tesla (simplifying) but a few percent of people think they do, so you can overprice and underdeliver on that. For a short while.

On this day, March 17, in 2003 PM Jean Chretien told GW Bush that we would not be participating in their invasion of Iraq, given the flimsy evidence for WMDs and belief that ongoing UN monitoring was effective.
Hindsight showed that to be a solid decision. No WMDs were ever found in Iraq - the war, which claimed between 200,000 and a million human lives (depending on how you count bodies,) was waged under false pretenses.
Then-Opposition Leader Stephen Harper sided with the US.

@JoBlakely You're confusing your wars. We supported them in Afghanistan as a NATO response. There was a lot of sympathy in Canada for the US post 9/11, and we offered them complete support there.
The US's incursion into Iraq was another thing entirely, not related to the 9/11 attacks. The US argued that Iraq posed a risk for future 9/11-style attacks and had presented highly-questionable evidence that Iraq was working on WMDs.
Canada was a flat no, though some back-channel support did happen.
@JoBlakely Yes, I agree. They were playing to post 9/11 sympathies and were arguing that they were justified in acting preemptively to prevent future terror attacks. At the time the Bush was using fear of chemical/nuclear attacks in major US cities to rally support.
Progressives at the time were saying W just wanted revenge for Saddam trying to kill his dad - a reference to the failed Iraq-sponsored, post-Gulf War assassination attempt on HW Bush that was stopped during Clinton.
@Eka_FOOF_A For sure this also - pre-Gulf War stockpiles, just to be clear to other readers.
Honestly, I was more partial to the personal vengeance theory at the time.
@Rural_Canadian That it is, that it is. This is the IDU's conquest map off their website. Light blue means they've got a party there, dark blue means they're in power.

So Trump can just claim that Canadian military equipment bought from the US are WMDs and grounds for invasion.

I heard that Trump's ideology is longterism and eugenics, I do agree with the less wars which is a fortunate side effect.
His ideology which also shared by billionaires, think that instead of sending money to places like Africa they should be sent to billionaires who could utilize it more, trickle down economics.
The attack on democracy, civil rights, and 'government for the people, by the people' -- it's funded by the same type of billionaire.

Speed does not equal progress. And movement is not the same as meaning.
In fact, some of the most important parts of life only become visible when we slow down long enough to notice them.

I have changed the default theme for Friendica.World.
It is still the 'Frio' theme but now with the 'Bookface' customisation, set to 'Auto Color Mode'.
The auto color mode means it switches between Light and Dark mode depending on your computer's setting.
If you want to change the theme and/or customisation, you can do so here: friendica.world/settings/displโฆ
You'll find the theme under 'General Theme Settings' and the customisation (Appearance) under 'Custom Theme Settings'
