Somebody created a Facebook like UI for Friendica called Bookface (expand for pics&more info)

Credits go to @Kristi H. for creating this style. It comes in both a light and dark version (check the links for usage instructions).

If you don't want to fiddle with code and stuff, ~~loma.ml has already installed it server-wide~~*, and should be available straight away for new accounts (If not, go to Settings>Display>General Theme Settings and change it from there. Or follow the guide in any of the links above).

Edit: loma seems to require invites. But, while in german, joinfriendica.de allows you to join without an invite. It also has quite a bunch of add-ons too like bluesky, tumblr, ifttt, markdown, langfilter (filters the languages in posts/comments) and curweather (shows the current weather).

This is the 4th revision of my Friendica FB facelift user stylesheet.

How to use:

If you're using the Firefox userContent.css make sure to wrap all of this in @-moz-document domain(friendica.world){...} (or whichever server you're on). Otherwise copy+paste into the Stylus add-on for Firefox or Stylus extension for Chrome or the Userscripts extension for Safari. Then in your Friendica Settings - Display - Theme pick "Frio" and under Settings - Display - Theme Customization either pick "Light" or "Custom." If you choose "Custom" copy+paste this schemestring:

Now the hard part is to get Friendica to integrate it in its base code, and somehow prompt users upon sign-up to choose their user interface !

I understand though that friendica devs might be reluctant to integrate it if they can't get assurances that this UI project will be maintained into the future.

@anticurrent Fortunately, Friendica is flexible enough. All servers can set a default theme, and much of what people dislike about it can just be fixed by swapping the Vier theme (which is default to many of the servers) with this one. In fact, there's already a server who did just that: loma.ml

Maybe I should ask here. The reason I'm here is because I'm looking for answers to this. As far as the integration with Lemmy goes, how does it work? Is there a 'Friendica' instance that anyone using that platform would be posting and interacting from? And in that case, does it play nicely with the other instances?

I'm pretty new here, probably moving to another instance at some point anyway. And I've been thinking of looking into these multi purpose platforms that play nicely with others. Because why not have more features and tools to play with, even if I don't use half of them. It might also fill in nicely for features that are missing here like multicommunities and posting to your own profile.

Also heard of mbin, although an in app search for something like "mbin" seems pretty useless here.

There are multiple Friendica instances. You can check them in the Friendica Directory (in the servers section. Friendica has groups too, but besides the !helpers@forum.friendi.ca (or probably even the !fediversenews@venera.social one) they're pretty much lacking activity (you're still free to post anyway, there are plenty of them).

If you need some help, you can also post on the former one by creating a regular post and mentioning the group with "!" or "@". I have also created a megathread with various resources and a small Q&A (it's actually vice-versa tbh, since the Q&A took the most space on it, but I digress) in order to get yourself started: libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-2…

Short Q&A with the most common problems

How do I post stuff?
Easy, on your profile, click the button in the top right that looks like this:
A pop-up window will open, and you can type anything. Make sure to set the appropriate permissions by clicking the tab at the top. If you want your post to be public then choose public, if you don't, select limited/private and add the exceptions or add who can see it. Make sure you properly select these permissions, because you cannot change them later. If you format your post (see below), you can also check the preview pane to see how your post will look. This also applies for comments.
How to format my text?
Unlike Facebook, Friendica allows you to format your text, just like you'd do in a Word document. It uses BBCodes for text formatting like bold text, italic text, underlined text and many others. You can find more example on the usage of it in the Wiki or under https://your-instance-address/help/bbcode. You don't have to style your text, but you can do some nice stuff with it. You can also get suggestions for formatting by typing [ and selecting an option from the drop-down menu, or typing out your option to narrow your search. But do check the wiki, though. Generally, BBCode looks like [option]your-text-here[/option].
If there is any text where you don't want to add any tags on by accident, slide it between these tags: [noparse][/noparse].
How to upload an image (and how to add alt-text to it)
Just drag&drop it into the composing page. Simple. Easy. No frills.
Also, to note is that you can also re-use an image you previously uploaded if you go to the Browser tab in the compose window.
Finally, you can link to any image you find online, without downloading&reuploading it in the 1st place. Right-click an image, click "copy image link", then go to your post and type [img]paste-your image-link-here[/img] (of course, you paste your image link instead, between the img tags). This is generally how images are displayed via BBCode.
I personally use an external site to host my media and link it this way, whenever there is something I want on the internet for as long as possible in order to save some space on my instance. I mostly use postimages.org, but I also used
files.catbox.moe
imgur.com
Meta and now also Reddit like to change the URL string to the media posted on their platforms, so don't rely on these if you want your post to still stay relevant after a few days.
You can also add Alt-Text to your image if, instead, you type [img=your_image_url]Your Alt-Text here[/img]. Alt-Text is generally an image description that is displayed when the image fails to load/before loading, and is useful to visually impaired people using screen reading software which can read this out loud. The latter is the reason why it is highly recommended by many people all across the Fediverse (not just on Friendica).
How to upload a video or other media
Just like you do with an image. However, the video will be posted under Browser, and then the "Files" icon:
Select your file, and it will be posted with an tag.
However, there's currently no user facing way to delete these as yet, so feel free to upload them on any other external service and share the direct link to the audio/video if you care about this.
You can use the tags [audio]your-link-to-the-audio[/audio] and [video]your-link-to-the-video[/video] for that.
How do I make a poll/vote at polls
Polls are currently supported by a few Fediverse platforms, but not by Friendica fully, right now (you can see them, but you cannot vote on them and create them).
You can again use an external service for creating polls, such as poll-maker or Strawpoll.
Okay, but do I need to add a title?
No, you don't. I didn't add one either here. You can if you want your post to be more fancy and want to turn your profile into a more of a personal blog. Which would be cool, but it's not necessary. You do you!
How to post to a group
Groups on Friendica, as well as any other ActivityPub platform, are generally just some special accounts that automatically boost/reshare whatever post you added while tagging them. Therefore, just create a regular post and tag them with the ! or @ signs (one of these tags should suffice). The former one creates a post that is visible on the group but unlisted wherever else (i.e. in a public feed). The latter takes account of your permission settings. You will see how you can find groups somewhere below.
How to find various people
There are multiple ways; One is to use any of the established lists:
Fedi.db's list
Most followed Mastodon accounts by Stefan Hayden
Fliboard federated accounts (for news organizations on Flipboard who enabled AP integration) [Google Sheet spreadsheet]
[Public] Popular/famous/notable Mastodon accounts (also available as a website) [Google Sheet spreadsheet]
The Friendica directory (only for people on Friendica)
Follow @FediFollows for suggestion
You can also go to Settings>Profile>Miscellaneous and scroll all the way down to add some tags to the profile. Then, you can also go to Contacts and choose "similar interests" in the left pane, get friend suggestions or a random profile.
Finally, you can also follow hashtags to get posts from people that also share your interests directly in your feed, and then follow them from there.
I'm posting stuff here, but how can people discover me?
Just like on Mastodon, you can enhance your posts with #hashtags. Other people who follow the same hashtags can find you and connect with you if they want.
But that's not the only way. You can also add yourself into the aforementioned Friendica Directory or to your server's one by going to Settings>Account>Security and Privacy Settings and check any of these two options:
This way anyone can find you according to your interests.
If, however you would like more privacy, you can check the following box below:
This limits the visibility of your content to only instances that are made aware of it, and people that have access to it based on your privacy settings. How do I find groups?
Same as with regular people. There are multiple lists:
Friendica Directory (for groups that are on Friendica).

Lemmyverse (For Communities on Lemmy - a decentralized Lemmy alternative - be wary of this though)
Check out the servers of other Fediverse software like Mbin or Piefed. These are more forum-like platforms, centered around communities. Generally, each of these communities has a Fediverse address. Copy that, paste it in the search bar, and you should be able to find it. If it doesn't work the 1st time, try a few more times. If it still doesn't work, look whether the server is not on the banned list by accessing your-server-address/friendica, and/or contact your admin for clarification.
How do I use the search? Is it any useful beyond just searching for people and groups and other accounts?
Yes. Check the Wiki for more information.
Are there any mobile apps?
Yes there are. From my personal experience, Raccoon for Friendica gave me the best results. Relatica is also a great option, as well as Fedilab (the latter is more of a Mastodon client, but you can disable the display of reply in the feeds and enable BBCode - fiddle out in the settings). There are other apps for various platforms as well. If you don't find any of them fitting, you can just access your Friendica server in your browser (e.g. friendica.world, nerdica.net etc.). It's very responsive and easy to use.

Today a mod on this account's old server deleted the 2021 thread, without any explanation but apparently by mistake.

Short Q&A with the most common problems

How do I post stuff?
Easy, on your profile, click the button in the top right that looks like this:
A pop-up window will open, and you can type anything. Make sure to set the appropriate permissions by clicking the tab at the top. If you want your post to be public then choose public, if you don't, select limited/private and add the exceptions or add who can see it. Make sure you properly select these permissions, because you cannot change them later. If you format your post (see below), you can also check the preview pane to see how your post will look. This also applies for comments.
How to format my text?
Unlike Facebook, Friendica allows you to format your text, just like you'd do in a Word document. It uses BBCodes for text formatting like bold text, italic text, underlined text and many others. You can find more example on the usage of it in the Wiki or under https://your-instance-address/help/bbcode. You don't have to style your text, but you can do some nice stuff with it. You can also get suggestions for formatting by typing [ and selecting an option from the drop-down menu, or typing out your option to narrow your search. But do check the wiki, though. Generally, BBCode looks like [option]your-text-here[/option].
If there is any text where you don't want to add any tags on by accident, slide it between these tags: [noparse][/noparse].
How to upload an image (and how to add alt-text to it)
Just drag&drop it into the composing page. Simple. Easy. No frills.
Also, to note is that you can also re-use an image you previously uploaded if you go to the Browser tab in the compose window.
Finally, you can link to any image you find online, without downloading&reuploading it in the 1st place. Right-click an image, click "copy image link", then go to your post and type [img]paste-your image-link-here[/img] (of course, you paste your image link instead, between the img tags). This is generally how images are displayed via BBCode.
I personally use an external site to host my media and link it this way, whenever there is something I want on the internet for as long as possible in order to save some space on my instance. I mostly use postimages.org, but I also used
files.catbox.moe
imgur.com
Meta and now also Reddit like to change the URL string to the media posted on their platforms, so don't rely on these if you want your post to still stay relevant after a few days.
You can also add Alt-Text to your image if, instead, you type [img=your_image_url]Your Alt-Text here[/img]. Alt-Text is generally an image description that is displayed when the image fails to load/before loading, and is useful to visually impaired people using screen reading software which can read this out loud. The latter is the reason why it is highly recommended by many people all across the Fediverse (not just on Friendica).
How to upload a video or other media
Just like you do with an image. However, the video will be posted under Browser, and then the "Files" icon:
Select your file, and it will be posted with an tag.
However, there's currently no user facing way to delete these as yet, so feel free to upload them on any other external service and share the direct link to the audio/video if you care about this.
You can use the tags [audio]your-link-to-the-audio[/audio] and [video]your-link-to-the-video[/video] for that.
How do I make a poll/vote at polls
Polls are currently supported by a few Fediverse platforms, but not by Friendica fully, right now (you can see them, but you cannot vote on them and create them).
You can again use an external service for creating polls, such as poll-maker or Strawpoll.
Okay, but do I need to add a title?
No, you don't. I didn't add one either here. You can if you want your post to be more fancy and want to turn your profile into a more of a personal blog. Which would be cool, but it's not necessary. You do you!
How to post to a group
Groups on Friendica, as well as any other ActivityPub platform, are generally just some special accounts that automatically boost/reshare whatever post you added while tagging them. Therefore, just create a regular post and tag them with the ! or @ signs (one of these tags should suffice). The former one creates a post that is visible on the group but unlisted wherever else (i.e. in a public feed). The latter takes account of your permission settings. You will see how you can find groups somewhere below.
How to find various people
There are multiple ways; One is to use any of the established lists:
Fedi.db's list
Most followed Mastodon accounts by Stefan Hayden
Fliboard federated accounts (for news organizations on Flipboard who enabled AP integration) [Google Sheet spreadsheet]
[Public] Popular/famous/notable Mastodon accounts (also available as a website) [Google Sheet spreadsheet]
The Friendica directory (only for people on Friendica)
Follow @FediFollows for suggestion
You can also go to Settings>Profile>Miscellaneous and scroll all the way down to add some tags to the profile. Then, you can also go to Contacts and choose "similar interests" in the left pane, get friend suggestions or a random profile.
Finally, you can also follow hashtags to get posts from people that also share your interests directly in your feed, and then follow them from there.
I'm posting stuff here, but how can people discover me?
Just like on Mastodon, you can enhance your posts with #hashtags. Other people who follow the same hashtags can find you and connect with you if they want.
But that's not the only way. You can also add yourself into the aforementioned Friendica Directory or to your server's one by going to Settings>Account>Security and Privacy Settings and check any of these two options:
This way anyone can find you according to your interests.
If, however you would like more privacy, you can check the following box below:
This limits the visibility of your content to only instances that are made aware of it, and people that have access to it based on your privacy settings. Unlogged users will not be allowed to find your content. E.g., open my profile in a new tab to see how this feature works: libranet.de/profile/petrescatr…
How do I find groups?
Same as with regular people. There are multiple lists:
Friendica Directory (for groups that are on Friendica).
Check the list of @Fedi.Tips available here.
Lemmyverse (For Communities on Lemmy - a decentralized Lemmy alternative - be wary of this though)
Check out the servers of other Fediverse software like Mbin or Piefed. These are more forum-like platforms, centered around communities. Generally, each of these communities has a Fediverse address. Copy that, paste it in the search bar, and you should be able to find it. If it doesn't work the 1st time, try a few more times. If it still doesn't work, look whether the server is not on the banned list by accessing your-server-address/friendica, and/or contact your admin for clarification.
How do I use the search? Is it any useful beyond just searching for people and groups and other accounts?
Yes. Check the Wiki for more information.
Are there any mobile apps?
Yes there are. From my personal experience, Raccoon for Friendica gave me the best results. Relatica is also a great option, as well as Fedilab (the latter is more of a Mastodon client, but you can disable the display of reply in the feeds and enable BBCode - fiddle out in the settings). There are other apps for various platforms as well. If you don't find any of them fitting, you can just access your Friendica server in your browser (e.g. friendica.world, nerdica.net etc.). It's very responsive and easy to use.

Years ago I used to recommend a Fedi platform called Lemmy. However, in 2021 some very disturbing stuff about Lemmy's developers came out which totally changed my mind. Because of this, I did a thread to warn people about Lemmy and then never mentioned them again.
Today a mod on this account's old server deleted the 2021 thread, without any explanation but apparently by mistake.

Made a quick account there to check things out and not sure if it's entirely the right fit for the particular use case I had in mind. It's very much inspired by Facebook obviously, which I was expecting but from what I can tell from a quick look, not the kind of Lemmy integration I was hoping for or imagining.

I'm going to keep an eye on this place though, so that I can start encouraging friends and family to join once it's easy and attractive (in terms of content) for anyone to join.

Basically I would be spending much more time in Lemmy communities, and I thought Friendica could be something extra on top to supplement it.

So I would like to be able to browse instances and communities and choose what I want to see and participate in. Either by subscribing or curating a feed or two. I don't see an obvious way to do this from Friendica yet. It seems like here I need to scroll through a pre existing feed and curate it from there.

But please bear in mind, I haven't explored extensively yet or read the link you shared earlier, although I have saved that post so that I can get back to it later in my day.

And another small thing for me (that can be easily fixed by styles and apps) is no apparent dark mode.

Go to Settings>Display>Custom theme settings, then click the drop-down on appearance (should be the second item).

If you're using the Vier theme instead of Frio, scroll down to Theme settings and select the drop down next to "set style".

Apologies for the second reply. Just wanted to say that I checked out mbin and it's probably more up my alley personally.

But, I still have a barely used Facebook account because a lot of people in my country are still on it. And I'm going to see if the rumours are true and try to spread the news about Friendica there, hopefully without my post getting removed or account being banned.

And if / when people from there give Friendica a shot, then I'll give it a proper shot too with them. It'll just be used for different things than what I use Lemmy for.

I think lemmy is a bit of the odd one out, so far i can interact between mastodon and pixelfed ok, and I can post from mastodon to lemmy, but in lemmy I can't really interact with mastodon or pixelfed.

If you want a lot more in on profile I'd check out mastodon, I just don't really get the Twitter style so I never know how to really use it for memes

Unpopular opinion: Facebook until around 2016 or so (whenever it added stories for the 1st time) was the best social network in terms of UI and concept. It's just Zuck that decided to just copy everyone, every single feature, cram everything in a single website and gobble all user data (and now he's also supporting Trump and free speech). Oh, and the ads. The stupid ads getting you everywhere.

Google+ was better. The concept of "circles" being the primary way of interacting with people was ingenious and far better represents how real people interact. My fencing friends are not the same as my RPG friends who are not the same as my family.

Facebook adopted this with "lists", but they're not treated as the core part of the experience that G+'s Circles were, so they don't get used.

Damn. I can’t imagine having enough people in my life to make lists.

There’s something wrong with me though. I’ve spent most of my life alone and my biggest fear has always been centered around being asked to leave my space.

Of course when you get older that gets harder. I’m lucky at the moment. I’m a stay at home dad who goes to spend time working on various projects with my uncle when I’m free.

If he died tonight I’d have no social life at all.

Some of the lists are very small. It was very much inspired by Google+ and I did it so I could easily post things relevant only to certain groups that might not be relevant to others or that I wouldn’t want others to see.

I suppose I do have a lot of “friends” on Facebook, but I’ve also been on the platform for 20 years as of this month or next. I joined back when it was less than a year old and you had to be a university student, and back then you had to be at a university that was supported by the platform. You could list what dorm you were in and your class schedule, which made it easy to find other students in your class, helpful if you’d missed a class or something. It was actually really useful in an era when college classes were just starting to make more use of online tools. In that era it made sense to add a lot of people.

I’ve purged the list a few times, and I could probably go through it again. The vast majority I haven’t seen in years, and there are plenty I’d probably never spend time with socially. Very few

Anybody who gives a rat's ass about grandma wants to see her hanging out in places that aren't actively hostile to her, and will at least consider switching.

If they insist on keeping her in places that want to see her come to a bad end just to make a buck, then we can safely stop calling or thinking of those people as friends.

It's compatible with the Mastodon API, so some of the apps work for it. I was talking to the developer of an iOS Mastodon the other day and they are off checking compatibility at the moment.

Just don’t follow much on Friendica due to a lack of iOS app. And only had one for android. For it to really take off, we need app development as well. This is a great step though as an easy UI will promote use.

Most people like to have the phone app for socials, makes it easy to browse or keep on top of posts more convenient. Honestly, I can’t really think of any social media platform that isn’t app based for this very reason. Goals for success: make it easy to use, engaging, and have an app with a good UI.

Sorry very late to this, but for me I don't care, I like PWAs and I put them as shortcuts on my phone. Trying to get friends and family over though that's a huge leap, and requires a very gentle hand

This is honestly so nice, every "clone" should have a similar interface for ppl swapping to make it easier, I love customization and different interfaces but I was only able to transition to lemmy because of its similarities to reddit, specifically the third party apps
