I realize I just posted this on another instance... but that one is going away soon... so for posterity.
Some people are interested in this... and, genuinely, thank you for asking. I try to post my (very few niche ass and no one cares) videos with artists I wish more folks paid attention to and it seems that's a good thing and I get into a lot of conversations about it. But, anyway, here's this years list. I tried adding two songs per month as a 'this is me now' this month type of thing. I did try to keep 'early album and late album' songs in their place... but, whatever. Enjoy? What did you like or hate the most?
I did leave the more 'epic' songs towards the end... mostly because they're long and I do not expect humans to listen to it all. So, if you made it that far... I got that dank for you.

Yet another reason to add to the list of why friends don’t let friends open PDFs…
Crazy impressive and absolutely mind boggling though. 😅
When I last worked with laser printers, there was a PostScript program that would run Doom - about 15 yrs ago. We never had the time to actually test it, but had to do some extra work to disable the ability to do arbitrary IO.
That said, amazing job and I'm wondering if I should replace my PC with a good printer!
This reminds me of the guy who stuck an LLM inside a font. Actually, there is more than one guy who has done this.

I'm not sure what happens when you typeset your PDF-containing-Linux in a typeface-containing-an-LLM, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to be there when it happens.

One of the events in computing that I have yet to see credibly researched and documented is what I call "The deluge":
How much did "The IT industry" grow during the 1990'ies in terms of persons, and what skills did they come in with ?
My guess is a factor of more than 1000, (ie: 100000+%) and that none of those people (-epsilon) had any professional IT experience, and knew nothing about the skill&craft of IT.
(Add the "Make Money Fast" incentive and...)
@bsdphk @jgeorge You can almost certainly chart it by graphing cumulative sales of personal computers, minus machines retired as broken/obsolete, which lags by a time period … and it was undergoing exponential growth throughout this period, so the retired cohort lagged new installs by a huge distance.
Computer use in business implies support personnel numbers (IIRC in the 90s it was 1 PC tech support per 40 installed base).
Since 2007 include smartphones/tablets as well. Different ratio, OFC.
That's pretty much how I arrived at "a factor 1000".
But having somebody who know what they're doing, do the math with actual data would be better 😀
Is this good?
Or very bad??🤔

Bookshop.org launched a new platform that allows independent bookstores to sell e-books to readers. Here's a look inside., USA TODAY (USA TODAY)
I have mix feelings about this, as while there are some DRM-free books, most are locked to the application.
Meaning: you can't give your book to someone after you're done and if the app stops working in the future, your book won't be available.
I'll rather have them call it renting than buying.

Basically anything that sells ePub, so Kobo.com, ebooks.com (this one has a drm free category), etc. DRM is decided by the publisher not the store so not everything will be available without protection.
If the book you want has DRM there's a Calibre plugin that is usually able to remove it.

Reddit might have some room to eat into Patreon’s model, allowing creators to put certain content behind paywalls. Lots of creators have their own subreddits already meant to facilitate community conversation in a way that comments on Patreon posts don’t totally allow for. So perhaps there’s some room for Reddit to sneak into that space.
That might actually work.

No, they just want to control the distribution. If they do, they can insert their ads and monetize directly.
And it's not just Patreon, it's onlyfans too. We all know reddit has plenty of porn, and by that I mean onlyfans spammers. So, since reddit already has the content creators and the content consumer userbase, why not cut out the middleman and monetize it themselves?

I recall their TOS having a clause like that years and years ago. And usually it's not a problem for the users or the creators, since everyone gets a cut.
I don't think the creators mind too much. Even if reddit takes a cut, the net profit is still much greater due to the size of the audience.
But why would they do this through Reddit and not Patreon?
You can already make private subreddits.

They never expected anything else from the lower courts. The whole goal is to get these things in front of what they perceive is a receptive SCOTUS.
They'll walk a knife edge line of noncompliance until they get there, in order to keep the real threat of not complying with SCOTUS as a possibility because that will likely influence how hard that court pushes back. SCOTUS will try to find a way to rule how it wants but in a way that doesn't invite such a confrontation.
It's not staying this way for long. Either the courts will fold, or they'll start disregarding the courts.
And no, I don't know what to do about it either.
#Bookface, a custom #Friendica UI, just got a big update!
This vastly improves the experience on #Friendica and is a big time improvement for web mobile users.
If you’re running a Friendica server, or are thinking of running one, I highly recommend using Bookface as the default UI. A look at this screenshot will show you exactly why.
Further release notes can be found here:
friendica.world/display/84b6ef…
BOOKFACE BIG UPDATE!
First of all thank you for all the interest in this “Frio” theme scheme. I was concerned that people might have so much animosity toward Meta that a scheme to make Friendica look more like Facebook would be ill received. I originally made “Bookface” as a user content script just so I would feel more “at home” on Friendica. And I’m still using it that way myself because the instance I’m on does not offer this scheme as an option yet.
Version 1.3 represents a massive rewrite with the introduction of new features, like support for Profile Cover Photos and an “Auto” version that can detect if your operating system is set to Light Mode or Dark Mode and automatically apply the correct mode to Friendica, plus a completely New Mobile View for phones and tablets that aims to make it look and function a lot more like an mobile app. The user content stylesheets for client-side use have also been updated with the same changes, if that’s how you use Bookface. I have incorporated a ton of your feedback into this update, which I thank you for! There are also over 30 tweaks and fixes in this update.
While this is still a work-in-progress (but what on the web isn’t?) Bookface is already being used in production on some Friendica instances so I’d say it’s generally probably safe to use, but there could be issues I haven't anticipated, particularly with whatever add-ons are enabled on any given server.
Keep in mind “Bookface” is intended for recent browsers. By which I mean those that were released in the last year or two. Because I want to leverage some of the more advanced things CSS can now do. But if you have a mobile device that’s stuck running an old browser I’ve added some fallbacks so it’s still at least usable, but I’ve intentionally ignored any browser that nobody should really be using anymore for anything (like Internet Explorer). Presumably if you choose to roll with retro gear you probably don’t care about making Friendica look modern anyway.
I’ll do more detailed posts about each of these new features, but here’s an overview:
BETTER MOBILE MODE!
You may have noticed there isn’t an “official” Friendica mobile app and the webapp feels pretty clunky and outdated. You could, of course, use Relatica or Raccoon for an actual native mobile app experience, but I’ve notice a lot of people (myself included) are trying to use the webapp. And it needs improvement.
I redesigned the mobile view to look and function a lot more like people expect a mobile app to work these days. One specific thing that was asked for was a way to get the toolbars out of the way in landscape mode, particularly on phones with small screens. The mobile landscape view now hides the toolbars and presents you with a limited set of buttons down the left and right sides of the screen if, in landscape orientation, the viewport is less than 400 pixels high. That’s going to be the majority of phones on the market today. Need more controls? Just rotate your phone back to portrait.
I’ve extensively tested this new UI on more than a half a dozen actual mobile devices, including an iPhone 5s, iPhone 8, two different recent Samsung phones, and older iPad Mini, two Android tablets, and two old Android phones.
EDIT: Post with more details about the new Mobile UI
AUTO VERSION!
More than one of you specifically asked for a version that would automatically switch between Light or Dark depending on which mode you have set on your device. It was tricky to implement given all the colors that are set server-side in PHP variables, but I came up with a pure-CSS way of doing it. It doesn’t even need to set a browser cookie. Enjoy going over to the Dark Side. Or Light Side. Whichever.
Unfortunately there is no auto version of the user content stylesheets for the client-side. The client-side styles require the underlying “Frio” theme be set to Light, Dark, Black, or Custom (which is based on Light). There is no way for a client-side stylesheet to automatically switch the server-side theme scheme, so there will never be an auto version of the user stylesheets.
LOCALIZATION & CUSTOMIZATION
Under the Settings > Display > Theme Customization options you could previously only set the Accent Colors. There was a "Link Color" box below that but it didn't do anything. Well, now it does. You can set almost any color you please ("almost" because it does error-catching to make sure you don't set it to the same color as the background).
I’ve moved as much as possible into CSS variables at the top of the stylesheets, so modifying Bookface to your liking is easier than ever. Just change the variable in that one place and everything else follows suit.
One thing in particular I’ve noticed from people’s screenshots is the engagement counts on Action Buttons being changed to match the button color or made black, etc., to make them less distracting. Personally I like them being in my Accent Color so I can quickly see which posts/comments are getting engagement and check them out. But I can also understand that all those colored “dots” could be distracting while scrolling. So I added CSS variables for “count-color” and "count-bg" that let you change the engagement count tex and background color to whatever you want.
But I took it beyond just the colors. Bookface sets a bunch of labels as pseudo-elements, and they are in English because that’s the only language I know. I saw a comment the other day from a German user on a German server that has implemented Bookface note that the labels were in English and thought they should be localized. Well, yes, they *should* and now I made it super easy for server admins to do that!
Just change the CSS variables for the labels at the top of the stylesheets to your language!
Bookface Action Button labels localized (if the translation is laughably wrong blame Google Translate, I don't know any other languages)COVER PHOTOS!
Every other social media platform seems to have a “Cover Photo/Header Picture” for your profile page. But not Friendica. 🙁 Until now! You can add images to your profile description and/or custom profile fields. You can also put things inside “class” containers. So I coded Bookface to detect a class container named “coverphoto” and treat whatever image(s) are in it as your big, bold cover picture.
You can also decide, depending on where you place it, whether it’s only visible on your actual “Profile” page or if it’s visible on all your profile pages, or if you want to show different cover photos on your profile and the other profile pages. If you’re really indecisive you can place up to 4 images in the container and Bookface will turn them into a striped collage.
As for what that looks like to other people who aren’t using Bookface? Well, they still see a thumbnail of your image(s) in your profile, it just won’t look really cool to them.
EDIT: Post with more details about Cover Photos
PRETTY TAGS!
What is social media without hashtags right? And it’s cool that in the Fediverse you can follow a hashtag like you follow a person. But Friendica’s tags look...kinda bad. A bit distracting. Too small. Too hard to read. And some people really go wild with a wall of tags in their posts. I’m apparently not the only one who thinks they could use some improvements. There are discussions about this in Friendica’s GitHub issues going back several years.
First of all, I don’t think we need the little lightning bolt or person icons on them anymore. It’s 2025, people know what a tag and a mention are. I also replaced the “(x)” on categories with an “X” icon. Next I made the tags the same size they are on Mastodon, which is also makes much better touch-targets on mobile devices. To make them less distracting I gave them an “open” design, and recoded them so only the tag you are hovering/focused on switches to a “filled” design. For consistency I kept similar colors to the existing “Frio” tags, but adjusted them for better contrast against either the Light or Dark mode versions.
The image shows how the tags appear in both Light and Dark modes and against the different background colors for posts and comments. The first row for each background color is how they normally appear, the second is the rollover effect when you hover on them.

But getting a new update on my 2019 #nvidia #sheildtv was not on my bingo card this year. I'll wait a few day to see potential bug reports, but that's pretty awesome to receive updates and features this late in the a game. The 2015 model also received an update! That's TEN YEARS!
I really wish there as a good #androidtv replacement though. I've actually just started thinking about it given it's starting to show it's age.

It's funny because the Nazis themselves (the 1930s ones, not the 2020s ones) also started their book burning on literally the exact same topic.

And by "funny" I mean "not funny at all in the slightest, holy fucking shit!"

IPFS is the way to go IMO, it's so perfect for archival that it pains me that it's still pretty unknown
the fact that you don't need any sort of central organization for everyone to help seed data is amazing, no more duplicate torrents splitting seeders, so long as you have identical data the network just figures it out.
If you have the hash for a piece of data you can just set a computer to watch for someone to start seeding it, even if the last time anyone saw the data was decades ago and a dude just found a CD in their recently passed dad's basement, if that dude seeds it overnight and then their computer explodes, you've now downloaded it and it'll remain available. It's so fucking good.
So about 104,857,600 GB? You'd need 105,000 people with 1 TB each to save that. Or...
Assuming you bought 30 TB SSDs, you'd need about 3,500 of those, costing €80 each.
That'd be €280k, but let's round it to €300k.
If every person spent €960 (or €80 per month), then each person could get 12 of those SSDs. You'd need 8,750 people to do that.
Should be doable if crowdfunded by a community, or if you had some big donor. Then you'd need to connect it.
Looking at diskprices.com, lowest prices for storage are around $8 (used) or $15 (new). I didn't look too hard, but a 30TB SSD for $80 (~$2.5/TB) seems wrong?
100K TB * $15/TB = $1.5 million
Assuming 100PB is the amount of data, we'd also need redundancy. Idk what best practices would be, but I'll say 3ish copies, so 300PB total.
So a grand total of ~$5 million.
Which is crazy cheap, all things considered. Like, it would be no problem for a single rich person to handle that.
Hell, subsidize/give away cheap little computers that you just plug power and an Ethernet cable into. Raspberry pi + 4TB drive ($60) + casing would be like... $100? Though I guess you'd need 75K of them, and the cost per TB is pretty bad.
This guy is 20TB for $280: https://a.co/d/17UOtFi
If we stick with $40 of overhead for rpi etc, that's $320 for 20TB ($16/TB), and we'd need 300PB/(20TB/unit) = 15K units. And at $320 each, all in would be $4.8 million.
The software seems to exist for connecting them all... So idk seems like it would be absolutely feasible? Would be interested to learn if I'm missing a major cost.

🚨 BIG NEWS Y'ALL! 🚨
Someone just saved ALL the CDC's public data before it could disappear! 🦅
Some mystery hero downloaded everything from the CDC's website (that's 98 GIGABYTES of health info!) and uploaded it to the Internet Archive on Jan 28th. Think of it like making a backup copy of your phone before it breaks!
Smart folks at places like Harvard are making sure this data stays safe by keeping copies. It's like having multiple backups of your family photos - can't be too careful!
Remember folks: Knowledge is power, and someone just made sure we didn't lose a whole bunch of it! 🎯

I went to a local Latino restaurant yesterday to get some takeout and saw a bunch of handwritten signs saying they were going to be closed on Monday to support the community.
The waitress said there was a movement to skip work and not spend money this Monday Feb 3 to protest the attacks on Latinos. I hadn't heard of that and didn't find much mention online. I think it's the idea by some random person in DC? I found the image above on facebook or somewhere equally horrible. Anyway I'm just posting bc this is the only protest I've seen in my area, the Democrats have been completely silent so all that's left is some rando on the other side of the country.

Do it. It's the beginnings of people understanding that a General Strike WILL WORK.
During COVID, it took two weeks of the economy being "shut down" before multibillion dollar corporations were asking for bailouts.
A general strike is going to hurt, but not as much as fascism.
It's gonna be a tough road, on reddit people are bitching about the idea of organizing a protest on a Wednesday because "they have to work."
Look, this system is going to try to fucking kill us so maybe showing up to work like nothing is wrong is missing the point entirely.

The FAA website has gone dark. It's just not there.
Update: I was wrong. It's no longer working without the www, but with it it's still online.
Per @AnneOfGreenCables, they may have tried to take the site down and botched it. They removed the DNS records for the non-www version.
Apparently Trump has said that "most" government websites are going to be shut down.

@AnneOfGreenCables I just searched using *.gov to see what came back and was struck by the new header at state.gov. The previous home page had a simple “US Department of State” header with links to the “Results Delivered” video and other retrospectives.
The new homepage seems so possessive.
