I feel like I'm going crazy. The news reporter says repainted, many people in the comments say they repainted the rainbow...
Every image I see is chalk. They chalked it over in rainbow, which as a form of protest is fine. In fact, if every time it fades or is washed, it gets rechalked I think would be more powerful in many respects as form of protest, but is the reporting just really bad or was there actual paint used?

The last decade has been people failing to learn that "the enemy of my enemy is a tool, probably in both common senses of the word, to use and then discard."
Though Newsom has the advantage that he has drowned out the various Republican "don't worry, I'm nice now; let's go back to pretending that systemic oppression was just about budgets" comeback tours.

In case you haven’t done this before, a word of encouragement:
Don’t worry. You can’t break anything. You get as many attempts as you need (hopefully few).

@albertcardona also, from my experience, the hardest thing is to get the target laptop to boot from the bloody USB thumb drive.
This step is shrouded in mystery, and most mortals end up needing a few attempts.
After that, it’s probably mostly plain sailing

If it doesn't boot from USB just like that, you need to go into the BIOS (method depends on make of computer, google "how to enter BIOS"). Then navigate to "boot settings" and select your USB drive as the first option to boot from. The Ubuntu setup is pretty self explanatory.

Shutdown -fw -t 0
At least, if memory serves me right. The -fw switch basically instructs the reboot to go into the firmware settings (aka uefi / bios)

@Walrus @slothrop @albertcardona Ha! You are right about that but Linux people are not generally “Wasssup my doodz” types. Can take a bit of digging to find videos that are informative and not irritating, this is true. The article posted in this thread explains the process pretty well IMO.
@Walrus @slothrop @albertcardona At the moment I’m on iffy mobile internet otherwise I would have found something. Often the distribution people do pretty good videos - what is more irritating than the my doodz is the YouTube ad infestation which seems to be getting worse by the say even if Linux info ads don’t attract that many advertisers, thankfully 🙂

Maybe look for "boot into bios" instructions that begin from windows "advanced startup options", first. Easier to start frombinside windows with a GUI if you can.
@deborahh @Walrus @slothrop @albertcardona True, actually getting to the BIOS screens can be fiddly. You need to be fairly quick to hit the right button while the PC starts up. As to what the right button is, search for make of computer and model (CPU model may help). Then be patient…you might end up in Windows a few times. When in BIOS remember to save the settings if you change them - you should be prompted to do this.
@alex_p_roe @Walrus @slothrop @albertcardona tip: take photos of your screen as you go. I found it hard to remember steps and details of options (especially since I'd read so many of thise "try these 11 things" webpages).

But once you’ve set your PC to boot from USB, created a bootable installation file and popped it on a USB drive, #Linux installation is pretty easy. Most distributions come with detailed (perhaps too detailed?) instructions on what to do. And feel free to reach out on forums or here if you have problems. Someone will help you. Or ask around and find out if anyone you know has done it already 🙂

Touchpads, touchscreens, webcams and facial recognition stuff can also lead to post installation issues - IOW - these features don’t work until you install something else - assuming you know what to install, where to find it and how to install it!

I think the onscreen installation instructions and warnings have come along way since I first installed SUSE Linux way back in the late 1990s! It has got easier and can be really simple if you hit no issues. Older hardware - more than 5 years (?) works best, newer tech can cause headaches - which is why I’ve held off from putting Linux on one of my older computers. It’s worth it! Extends the life of you computer for years!

I confess, as a 50+ linux newbie I went through ten usb sticks, convinced i was downloading them wrong. After I figured out what I was doing wrong, I then had 9 sticks ready to offer to friends 😁

Go to that page, fill in some fields like username and your desired user password, maybe a list of packages you know you want... Click the button at the bottom and download the image. Write the image to a USB stick using diskimager.org/
Boot the windows 10 machine off the new USB stick, answer a couple questions and come back in 15 mins when your new Debian machine is ready.
Do NOT boot off that stick any machine unless you want it wiped and Debian installed.

Mint is an option for windows users. If it's different per se, it has similarities and it is recommended for the windows users habits who prefer to be in a familiar configuration. And you can go to another system later.

depending on what you want it to do, different distros will work better or worse. Ubuntu is great if you mostly use it for emails and office stuff, but it is a pain to get online games like Steam to work. If you are going to be gaming I recommend Pop!_OS. It has access to all the standard office packages like LibreOffice and Steam just works. You may have to fiddle with the bios settings though, definitely turn off secure boot first. itsfoss.com/install-pop-os/

Unless parents want me to start telling their kids what to eat (chocolate and energy drinks) and when to go to bed (4am), and teaching them all the new swear words, I think parents should be managing their children, not literally every other person in an entire country.
Yes, managing a kid’s online access is hard. So is keeping them from being run over by cars, or drinking bleach, or drowning in a pool. But these things are YOUR responsibility. Figure it out without making everyone else miserable.

Yeah, there are videos of people using videogame characters on monitors to bypass photo ID checks, as AAA games are sufficiently photorealistic, and can be controlled to turn a character left right, look up down (etc), that they can be used with "age verification" systems.
The level of political incompetence and the lack of technical understanding of many MPs in the UK - even at a basic laypersons level - is often humiliating.

I am all for having people who owned slaves pay restitution to those who were slaves. But what you want is that people who never owned slaves, even those who's direct ancestors never owned slaves, should for some reason pay money to people who never were slaves because they have the same skin color as some people who did? There's a word for that.
And what about blacks who owned slaves, what about blacks who owned white slaves? How far back does your linage have responsibility for what those before you did? If you go that route, you'll find a lot of reparations to pay.
And that ignores the data that blacks after slavery were better of financially then they are now (in the US). Because progressive policies destroyed the black nuclear family and it hurts kids.

The United States at 1860, 50-80% of all economic wealth was derived from slavery. This is a very conservative estimate, BTW.
Going forward from there, a solid 60%-80% of the United States CURRENT wealth STILL DERIVES from that Slavery.

Well, not really. Unless we want to start enumerating every consequence of every evil and try to reverse it, which will be chaos. But you just want the transfer from white to black for one specific evil, let alone that those two camps hardly exist unless you live in a very homogenic nation. Most people despite their skin color aren't pure white nor black. How do you enumerate for that? You determine by DNA probe how much they need to pay or receive?

That didn't used to be the case. And we know fatherless homes lead to a higher chance of crime and worse economic outcomes. So you want to help any group of kids, ensure their fathers stay in their lives.

Yes, and especially that in WWI was a direct factor in causing WWII, in which my grandfather fought. So I never claimed support for that either.
And even with then, there's a clear distinction between immediate restitutions from slave owners to slaves, which I would support if you could go back in time. But we are talking reparations from those who never had slaves to those who never were slaves. Even from those who came from people that died to end slavery to those their ancestors helped liberate.

Here, I decided to make the blood on the armour of the young knight almost not visible, to avoid shocking the audience with problem at sight of blood and keep the strip for all audience. There's a webcomic called Order of the Stick about D&D characters that regularly talk about XP, going up levels, etc. The best of course was when the party needed a big diamond for something, so the thief character crawled out of the page, went to her own bio webpage on the same site, and 'stole' a diamond from her bio pic. After that her bio pic didn't have a diamond anymore.
As for video games, Metal Gear Solid did stuff like this, such as when one character you are fighting can easily block all your moves because he can 'read your thoughts'. The trick is to plug your controller in the other slot, then he finds that he can no longer read your mind. 😆

While I think everyone agrees it's not good for children to view a range of stuff, the whole reaction to it is technically deluded.

Even before this I am Inverness every time a company makes me lower my security by deactivating my VPN to access their services. They claim it's for their security, but we all know they want the data.

How likely is the children's commissioner to get her way with a VPN ban? It seems the UK gov does not want to go down this route yet and even child safety campaigners think this would be a step to far... either way everyone needs to push back on this!

Just relying on individuals to block bad accounts does not work in the real world. Here's a concrete example:
A black grandfather played with his white grandchildren. His family videoed it and shared this wholesome scene.
Far right racists stole the video, removed the context and claimed it was a paedophile grooming victims. They posted their edited version and a far right moron with over a million racist followers shared the video.
The black grandfather is now living in fear, but the social network (Musk's X) won't take the posts down and the police claim that sharing the video isn't a crime.

The philosophy of people like Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk is that people should be able to see whatever they want, and if they don't like it they block it.
That might sound good on a superficial level, but the real world shows how it's a terrible idea that puts innocent people in physical danger.
Bigots use unmoderated networks to spread lies about groups they want to target. Even if an individual blocks them, other people haven't blocked them and some believe the lies, and that's how bigoted radicalisation happens.
Bigoted lies have to be stopped at source, before innocent people are threatened or attacked in real life.

I believe Libel and Slander are civil matters and should be pursued as such.
In contrast, Inciting Racial Hatred and Threatening Behaviour are actual crimes and are the police’s responsibility.
Sharing a video of lies is a civil offence. Sharing a video of lies for the purpose of inciting hatred against a group based on race has been a criminal offence since 1986 (amended a few times, I think the 2006 Racial and Religious Hatred Act is the most recent one). Sending threats of violence has been a criminal offence for even longer.
No police officer who qualified in the last 40 years has any excuse for not knowing this. And police officer who claims this is not a crime should probably be charged as an accessory (under UK law, knowing that something is a crime and actively discouraging people from reporting it to the police can make you an accessory, which is why harassment training tells you that, if someone that reports to you tells you that they’ve been assaulted then you must make it clear that reporting it to the police is an option).
The bigger issue may be jurisdiction. For stupid historical reasons, most things that happen online are the jurisdiction of the City of London police, and they’re woefully understaffed for this.

Stephen Yaxley-Lennon aka Tommy Robinson was prosecuted for contempt of court for deliberately breaking a (civil) court order not to do something (an injunction).
I can't say whether there is a criminal offence under the law of England which could be applied to the circumstances. If nothing else I'd have thought criminal harassment might apply, but IANAEL. There certainly would be some options in Scotland, but that's a different legal system & jurisdiction.

if I make an analogy with email: we have spam filters and specifically we have reporting done by individuals. No government control no centralised organisation but basically technology combined with individuals reporting abuse or spam. In my email box I get about three spam messages per week that still make it to my inbox.

No, it's a criticism of people who think we don't need moderation at all.
Some people think that individual blocks are enough, this is an example of how wrong they are.
The Fediverse is made of thousands of servers, each one does moderation itself and it naturally varies a lot. Some have very strong moderation, others not so strong.
If a server doesn't moderate at all, it's probably best for others to defederate it in order to prevent bigotry etc spreading.

That's exactly the wrong lesson to take.
You cannot do rebuttals when a dangerous bigoted lie is being shared by a far right account to their million+ racist followers who then share it to their followers. It is not practical to do rebuttals or arguments, the people who believe the lies will not read the rebuttals.

I was almost to the end of this article before I realized it wasn't about America and then I had to go dig around to make sure I was right about that. What is wrong with Jimmy Nail??
It bothers me no end that in our Tesco Express the piles of Daily Mail early in the morning are bigger than all the others put together, and they are gone by evening. Almost every person I stand behind in the queue, who has a paper, has the Mail. A few older posher-looking types have the Telegraph. It's out any wonder I have no friends here? It's a fascist enclave.

For those, who do not know: It is impossible to block "harmful" content only in #Wikipedia. Russia tryed to block a single article and ended up in bloxking all Wikipedia. Turkey tryed to block a single article and ended up blocking all wikipedia. China blocks all wikipedia. France tryed to block a single article by kidnapping an admin and ended up streisanding that article. A german court ordered the removal of a large number of images of Reiss Engelhorn Museum #REM (REM ruling), but the images were reinstated by an admin located outside of EU legislation.
Wikipedia protects itself by forbidding external cookies, an absolute ssl-only rule, and its own dns resolver. Wikipedia can be accessed via the "wiki fronted app" that uses domain fronting for avoid dns blocking.
If UK is friends with USA this will lead to a worldwide shutdown of wikipedia.
