Every image I see is chalk. They chalked it over in rainbow, which as a form of protest is fine. In fact, if every time it fades or is washed, it gets rechalked I think would be more powerful in many respects as form of protest, but is the reporting just really bad or was there actual paint used?

It’s publication day for the new edition of my first poetry collection, ‘You Took the Last Bus Home’.
It’s been unavailable for nine months, following the demise of its original publisher, Unbound. I’m so delighted that Picador stepped into the breach to bring out this shiny new edition.
Hopefully it’s now back on the shelves of most bookshops – and is available to order online from the usual places.

This is 100% a "Let them fight." moment, but we really need actual progressives to learn to fight and be mean.
We can NOT reach across the aisle to people who, among other things, are willing to defend a child rapist. Mainstream conservatives are not the political opposition, they are the enemy. Progressives need to act like it.
@peteramthor nobody's forgetting that.
However, most people have perspective.
Most people can spot an enemy psyop when they see it.
The last decade has been people failing to learn that "the enemy of my enemy is a tool, probably in both common senses of the word, to use and then discard."
Though Newsom has the advantage that he has drowned out the various Republican "don't worry, I'm nice now; let's go back to pretending that systemic oppression was just about budgets" comeback tours.

@albertcardona Yep, the Ubuntu guide (though currently unreachable for me?) should serve you fine.
In case you haven’t done this before, a word of encouragement:
Don’t worry. You can’t break anything. You get as many attempts as you need (hopefully few).
Have fun!
@albertcardona also, from my experience, the hardest thing is to get the target laptop to boot from the bloody USB thumb drive.
This step is shrouded in mystery, and most mortals end up needing a few attempts.
After that, it’s probably mostly plain sailing
@sibrosan @slothrop @albertcardona if the Windows installation still works, you can type in the run command:
Shutdown -fw -t 0
At least, if memory serves me right. The -fw switch basically instructs the reboot to go into the firmware settings (aka uefi / bios)
As always, check before running commands from someone on the internet 😀 Hope this helps!

i.e. Framing
-- So why aren't you advocating for restitution for slavery to fix the historical and economic situations that affected the descendents of slavery?
Oh, right... because you are so entrenched in your own White Supremacy to see that.
It's always the white "liberal" europeans that always fail the racism test, indoctrinated by the media into the "White" narrative, isolated from any actual interaction or knowledge of American racism.

I am all for having people who owned slaves pay restitution to those who were slaves. But what you want is that people who never owned slaves, even those who's direct ancestors never owned slaves, should for some reason pay money to people who never were slaves because they have the same skin color as some people who did? There's a word for that.
And what about blacks who owned slaves, what about blacks who owned white slaves? How far back does your linage have responsibility for what those before you did? If you go that route, you'll find a lot of reparations to pay.
And that ignores the data that blacks after slavery were better of financially then they are now (in the US). Because progressive policies destroyed the black nuclear family and it hurts kids.
--
I don't know the Belgium economy, but I have studied the US Economy pretty extensively.
The United States at 1860, 50-80% of all economic wealth was derived from slavery. This is a very conservative estimate, BTW.
Going forward from there, a solid 60%-80% of the United States CURRENT wealth STILL DERIVES from that Slavery.
Go back and look at how naive and ignorant your comment is, with these facts about the US economy.
Well, not really. Unless we want to start enumerating every consequence of every evil and try to reverse it, which will be chaos. But you just want the transfer from white to black for one specific evil, let alone that those two camps hardly exist unless you live in a very homogenic nation. Most people despite their skin color aren't pure white nor black. How do you enumerate for that? You determine by DNA probe how much they need to pay or receive?
You throw around a wild guess as fact because it supports the actions you'd like to see.
@gvs --
Damn... so you haven't even looked anything up in Google?
I gave you the "Servicemen's Readjustment Act" of 1944 that you can actually look up. (Also called the GI Bill.)
You can literally look up the Marshall Plan and how much money was GIVEN to Belgium.
You can do a CURSORY review of the GI Bill and read about how it discriminated against Black veterans.
I'm not "enumerating every consequence of every evil."
I gave you two prime examples of how YOU received more help than blacks
My whole point is that I received nothing. I was born in 1977, long after all this happened. I had no part in the war(s) on either side. Nobody who has never met me owes me anything or vice versa.
None of what you posted compares to what you suggest because time passed and those who did that evil are not here anymore. If you find any of them alive, please enjoy my full support taking everything they own and putting them in jail until they die.
@gvs --
Moving the goal posts. Classic tactic.
Lets reference your original comment at: rebelbase.site/objects/fdfd713…
You cite black children growing up without fathers, which is a RACIST TROPE.
I have counters to all your arguments because I've heard them all before from KKK and White Supremacists.
I counter by suggesting support for reparations and I get MORE RACIST TROPES.
I provide lots of evidence and you keep doubling down.
You are indeed the individual racist you cited earlier.
Besides anecdotes, there is no evidence for white supremacy or a patriarchy that disadvantages women. What does exist is black children growing up without fathers at home, which is the biggest predictor for ending up in prison and it's being done by government funding of single black mothers. But don't listen to the white man, google Thomans Sowell.
It is not, it is census based fact:
Black kids: 65% without their biological father
White kids: 25%
That didn't used to be the case. And we know fatherless homes lead to a higher chance of crime and worse economic outcomes. So you want to help any group of kids, ensure their fathers stay in their lives.
You have provided no facts whatsoever, you just state something and append the word fact and that is a fact. 😎
@gvs --
Seriously... You should really do this for every one of your comments.
Yawn, asking chatgpt:
how many black childeren in the US grow up without their father versus white children
ChatGPT said:
Based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and studies from organizations like the Pew Research Center:
Black children: Roughly 64–65% live in a home without their biological father present.
White children: Roughly 24–25% live in a home without their biological father present.
Thomas Sowell also talks about this a lot, is he racist as well, is he KKK too?
--
I just don't get how white Europeans are so racist, that they don't know that they're racist?
@gvs -- The whole point of this conversation is to demonstrate to you that YOU'RE FUCKING WRONG.
You are totally ignorant of basic facts that built your current economic situation while pretending to know everything about the black economics in the United States (and I proved you wrong there too).
You keep throwing down and proving that ignorance.
Is that really a picture of you or are you a JD Vance fanboi?
Because I'm thinking you're just a racist troll now.

Your country received restitution and seized German property.
Your country received around $550 million (1950s dollars) in US aid to rebuild.
The GI Bill after World War II was the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 that systematically discriminated against Black Veterans.
YOUR COUNTRY RECEIVED MORE HELP THAN BLACK PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES.
Be careful, because I'm reading your statements as naivety and ignorance instead of KKK levels of racism, who's manual you seem to have.
Yes, and especially that in WWI was a direct factor in causing WWII, in which my grandfather fought. So I never claimed support for that either.
And even with then, there's a clear distinction between immediate restitutions from slave owners to slaves, which I would support if you could go back in time. But we are talking reparations from those who never had slaves to those who never were slaves. Even from those who came from people that died to end slavery to those their ancestors helped liberate.
Your cheap shot at putting me in with the KKK proves the absurd level of your argument. I despise nationalists and more so, racists when racism is defined as something the person themselves did.
@gvs --
LMAO... You're just doubling down...
The fact that you think "racism" is confined to individuals, when I literally pointed the GI Bill out to you (which you didn't even look up or read, obviously) that specifically discriminated against Black Veterans that fought to free your country from Nazis.
Just look up "40 acres and a mule" and do some history lookup on that.
It's always a fucking white european that gobbles up the KKK talking points.

And more RACIST TROPES...
Seriously, I don't recommend #AI because it is destroying art and the climate, but if you were to put any of your comments into AI and ask it to point out the racist tropes, it would do that for you.

There's a webcomic called Order of the Stick about D&D characters that regularly talk about XP, going up levels, etc. The best of course was when the party needed a big diamond for something, so the thief character crawled out of the page, went to her own bio webpage on the same site, and 'stole' a diamond from her bio pic. After that her bio pic didn't have a diamond anymore.
As for video games, Metal Gear Solid did stuff like this, such as when one character you are fighting can easily block all your moves because he can 'read your thoughts'. The trick is to plug your controller in the other slot, then he finds that he can no longer read your mind. 😆

While I think everyone agrees it's not good for children to view a range of stuff, the whole reaction to it is technically deluded.
Just relying on individuals to block bad accounts does not work in the real world. Here's a concrete example:
A black grandfather played with his white grandchildren. His family videoed it and shared this wholesome scene.
Far right racists stole the video, removed the context and claimed it was a paedophile grooming victims. They posted their edited version and a far right moron with over a million racist followers shared the video.
The black grandfather is now living in fear, but the social network (Musk's X) won't take the posts down and the police claim that sharing the video isn't a crime.

The philosophy of people like Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk is that people should be able to see whatever they want, and if they don't like it they block it.
That might sound good on a superficial level, but the real world shows how it's a terrible idea that puts innocent people in physical danger.
Bigots use unmoderated networks to spread lies about groups they want to target. Even if an individual blocks them, other people haven't blocked them and some believe the lies, and that's how bigoted radicalisation happens.
Bigoted lies have to be stopped at source, before innocent people are threatened or attacked in real life.

I'm not a lawyer but I wonder if the police are trying to pass the buck by claiming it's a civil law matter rather than criminal law?
I don't know though.
I believe Libel and Slander are civil matters and should be pursued as such.
In contrast, Inciting Racial Hatred and Threatening Behaviour are actual crimes and are the police’s responsibility.
Sharing a video of lies is a civil offence. Sharing a video of lies for the purpose of inciting hatred against a group based on race has been a criminal offence since 1986 (amended a few times, I think the 2006 Racial and Religious Hatred Act is the most recent one). Sending threats of violence has been a criminal offence for even longer.
No police officer who qualified in the last 40 years has any excuse for not knowing this. And police officer who claims this is not a crime should probably be charged as an accessory (under UK law, knowing that something is a crime and actively discouraging people from reporting it to the police can make you an accessory, which is why harassment training tells you that, if someone that reports to you tells you that they’ve been assaulted then you must make it clear that reporting it to the police is an option).
The bigger issue may be jurisdiction. For stupid historical reasons, most things that happen online are the jurisdiction of the City of London police, and they’re woefully understaffed for this.
@drmambobob
Stephen Yaxley-Lennon aka Tommy Robinson was prosecuted for contempt of court for deliberately breaking a (civil) court order not to do something (an injunction).
I can't say whether there is a criminal offence under the law of England which could be applied to the circumstances. If nothing else I'd have thought criminal harassment might apply, but IANAEL. There certainly would be some options in Scotland, but that's a different legal system & jurisdiction.
@drmambobob
You can be sued for defamation, but it's not a criminal matter. It's not the police's job to resolve civil disputes.
However, notable right wing arseholes have been successfully taken down in court (e.g. Katie Hopkins) for accusations less dangerous than this, so I hope the family get good legal advice on whether that would be worth doing.
Well yeah, exactly. Musk (like Jack Dorsey before him) seems to think individuals should just block what they don't want to see, and everyone else should see whatever they want.
This is a textbook example of why that policy does not work in real life.
@drmambobob @petealexharris the police don't give a shit. They behave the same when women say their lives have been threatened. 'We can't do anything, he hasn't done anything yet'

if I make an analogy with email: we have spam filters and specifically we have reporting done by individuals. No government control no centralised organisation but basically technology combined with individuals reporting abuse or spam. In my email box I get about three spam messages per week that still make it to my inbox.
So I DO think that individual reporting is enough.
The example you make is a very specific one , and shit will always happen.
"The example you make is a very specific one"
No, it's not. If you go to the end of the thread there are examples of massacres and genocides caused or exacerbated by lack of social media moderation:
social.chinwag.org/@FediThing/…
Lax moderation is really dangerous.
(Email doesn't spread stuff to strangers as easily as social media, I don't think they're comparable.)
If anyone is wondering whether this is an isolated case, it isn't.Poorly moderated social networks have been linked to multiple real life massacres and genocides. Bigoted lies were deliberately spread about innocent groups in order to stir up violence:

as I can easily spam-bomb 10,000 people via email I think they are pretty comparable. Apart from that, look at Reddit. Probably one of the very few social platforms that are useful and fun.
Why?
Because the people on Reddit can down-vote messages.
And that seems to be enough to keep an unbelievable amount of groups functioning pretty well.
For the people, by the people.
Hundred percent happy with individual moderators,
Hundred percent against centralised supervision.
No, it's a criticism of people who think we don't need moderation at all.
Some people think that individual blocks are enough, this is an example of how wrong they are.
The Fediverse is made of thousands of servers, each one does moderation itself and it naturally varies a lot. Some have very strong moderation, others not so strong.
If a server doesn't moderate at all, it's probably best for others to defederate it in order to prevent bigotry etc spreading.
Thanks! I think legal philosophy helps guide us a lot, here. People are allowed to be wrong, even very wrong, even very wrong in ways with consequences (like medicine). Rebuttals, not censorship in that case.
The line is crossed when you're severely damaging someone's life. Damaging false accusations, and especially inciting violence must be prevented with whatever mechanisms we have.
I hope I found a place with the same view, and I can always jump servers if I need to.
"Rebuttals, not censorship."
That's exactly the wrong lesson to take.
You cannot do rebuttals when a dangerous bigoted lie is being shared by a far right account to their million+ racist followers who then share it to their followers. It is not practical to do rebuttals or arguments, the people who believe the lies will not read the rebuttals.
"People are allowed to be wrong"
If someone deliberately spreads lies that put an innocent person's life in danger, that should not be allowed.

Exactly.
Yes, that was my thought too when first hearing about the recent massacres and genocides linked to social media.
It's eerily similar:
"(Rwandan radio station RTLM is) regarded ... as having played a crucial role in creating the atmosphere of charged racial hostility that allowed the genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda to occur. A working paper published at Harvard University found that RTLM broadcasts were an important part of the process of mobilising the population ... RTLM has been described as "radio genocide", "death by radio" and "the soundtrack to genocide""
I’m afraid only thing that helps here is punching the nazis to make them afraid to do such things.
When we are a cowardly society that does not punish exploiting our tolerance and freedom of speech, this happens.
Because there is a moral backbone. These fuckers just take potshots at it one-by-one. Somebody needs to shoot back. That’s what you do when you’re attacked: You defend.
@philpetree Lawsuits won't restore the damage done. The reputation is set, the victims have already seen the real faces of their neighbours, and people will keep sharing the video with incorrect information.
There is no coming back from this, even if he gets money out of this situation.
Laws over libel and slander seem to have been written in the days when it was physically quite difficult to reach a mass audience.
The situation is so different now, maybe there needs to be some other approach? It's just so much easier to spread lies now 😞
The first paragraph is hard to understand, but yes, twitter's fascist moderation is a weapon for Nazis.
Twitter formerly known as a problematic social media space is now a subversive spreader of hate, for evil men.
My post's first para or the article's first para?
That's some evil shit on X... But why do people still think any good can come from making private family media public? If ai training and warrantless search isn't enough, it will be taken out of context.
I have an obscenely huge and far flung family, but we have Signal groups to share all our goofy videos and touching moments. Awesome sauce.

Fascists use very subtle tricks to gain power and promote their lies. The original Nazis used to try to disguise their propaganda as something else, especially in films they funded.
Fascists aren't just thugs, they're also professors and writers and other people whose job revolves around intellect but who either have no moral compass or have been seduced by bigoted lies.

Abandon the UKLabour Party, in groups.
More newsworthy and exposing. Announce as "We as 12 (or 250) of ______ have realised we no longer have a place in what "the Labour Party" has become.

For those, who do not know: It is impossible to block "harmful" content only in #Wikipedia. Russia tryed to block a single article and ended up in bloxking all Wikipedia. Turkey tryed to block a single article and ended up blocking all wikipedia. China blocks all wikipedia. France tryed to block a single article by kidnapping an admin and ended up streisanding that article. A german court ordered the removal of a large number of images of Reiss Engelhorn Museum #REM (REM ruling), but the images were reinstated by an admin located outside of EU legislation.
Wikipedia protects itself by forbidding external cookies, an absolute ssl-only rule, and its own dns resolver. Wikipedia can be accessed via the "wiki fronted app" that uses domain fronting for avoid dns blocking.
If UK is friends with USA this will lead to a worldwide shutdown of wikipedia.

The Bot-Account @Data_is publishes lists of md5/Sha1 message digests for all backup files published by wikimedia (wikimedia hosts the backups und message digests for about 3 month only) and message digests for all files on commons (about 6GB for about 120Million files). @jathanasiou
Image description: 2 evolvepolitics posts:
1. Wikipedia is in a legal battle with the UK government to prevent the platform from being censored – or completely blocked – thanks to the Online Safety Act.
2. Under the new law, the UK media regulator Ofcom is likely to label Wikipedia as a ‘Category 1’ platform.
This would impose the strictest content rules possible – such as:
- age verification for users,
- identity verification for contributors
- censorship of ‘harmful’ topics
who could've seen that coming?
