I know @feed forces people to use their email to log in. As a security professional and privacy advocate, I have a problem with this, but I don't know if it's inherent with Ghost, or if 404 media set it up that way by choice.

I did a line-by-line scan of the PDF, and I recognize most of the Mastodon side of Fedi got hit, but also a good chunk of Lemmy, Peertube, Pixelfed, and even a few Sharkey instances.

I thought I’d re-share this list of Meta’s IP addresses that admins can block in their firewalls (in iptables format):

However, it’s from 2 years ago, and it’s possible Meta may be using different IP ranges for their scrapers.
(I’ve ran those iptables commands on my own server, and I wasn’t able to find any of my websites running on my server in that leaked list, so I’m not sure if the firewall worked or if Meta just didn’t find my site.)

Yeah, definitely grounds for concern. And yet another good reminder DO NOT USE FEDI FOR ANYTHING CONFIDENTIAL, that's what Signal is for!
All that being said, it's not clear to me whether Meta is scraping images from DMs or followers-only post. If they're looking at neuromatch.social (or follow 'show original post' link for any profiles or public/unlisted posts that federate from neuromatch to instances that don't have their public feeds locked down) they'd get files from media.neuromatch.social. But is there a realistic way for them to scrape all images from media.neuromatch.social?
Anyhow @jonny @moderation according to this report Meta's scraping a list of domains that include media.neuromatch.social. Meta denies it of course but we all know that doesn't mean anything. It's not clear just what it means for domains to be on the list, and I'm not sure what to do in response -- blocking all known Meta domains and IPs at the network level is a good idea if that's not already happening, although it's easy enough for them to work around it.
EDIT, August 10: here's jonny's update: the neuromatch media site wasn't publically enumerable.

@b2c is constantly fighting AI traffic to our server. But they are constantly fighting to scrape everything despite any counter measures.
I'll look more into it later, but from what I see now cj.g is on the list but cj.s not.
That could be because cj.g has the bluesky bridge enabled. Dunno.
PS: Nevermind. Now that I'm awake I searched the pdf and both climatejustice instances are on the list. But not all instances on our server.

you can’t prevent it as long as your profile is public. That’s the whole point, profile public = anybody can scrap it.
Mastodon is available on the web. Anybody can scrap any website and mastodon by default does not require a login to see users public post.
It’s definitely not ethical but it’s technically not complicated.
You can make your profile private and always reply privately if you don’t want your posts to be visible.

I've shared your concerns with our tech team. We will look into other options for DDOS protection, and will also look into using some of CloudFlare's tools to block AI scrapers.
That said, there are two points that our tech team made:
1) There's currently no evidence that Meta is scraping DMs from Cloudflare. It's not even clear to members of our tech team that this is technically possible to do.
2) Kolektiva.social posts, like most things on the fediverse, are public. So at the end of the day, there is little that can be done to protect that data from scrapers, aside from making our instance only visible to logged in users.
If you've got any other practical suggestions for steps we can take to protect user's data, let us know, as we're always happy to do what we can.

In reply to the points made. My comment on DMs was pure speculation, based on the possible premise that if the DMs are passing through Cloudflare like all the other posts, and the Cloudflare cache is scraped, everything could get hoovered up.
Indeed, it's not clear that Clouflare is the vector for the inclusion of the Kolektiva instances on this list at all. A suggestion, though, that beyond the Cloudflare consideration, there are options for blocking the range of IPs controlled by Meta from server access. If y'all haven't done that yet, here are a couple links:

Yeah, I have "approve followers" turned on for this account and will decline, block, and/or report ones that look dodgy (following zillions of people, no posts on the home page, only boosts in bursts, etc).
In practive, I'd be surprised if Meta is behind any of those following accounts. They've gotten a lot of positive PR by pretending to be good fediverse citizens and the relatively small benefit of being about to get targeted accounts' followers-only post probably isn't worth the PR cost if it comes out. But, you never know ... it's certainly an attack vector no matter who's behind it, so it's good to be cautious!

This article seems to think the problem is that a third party is asserting the copyright. The fact that these class actions are becoming more popular with first parties seems to suggest you're mistaken. Also, the trespass issue I mentioned remains since there is no implied right of access to chattels for an illegal purpose. There's a tort here.

There are quite a few class actions in process and it'll be interesting to see how things play out. And even though the plaintiffs in the Meta case didn't succeed, the court certainly left the door open to other attempts -- and arguably even encouraged them. technologyreview.com/2025/07/0… is a good overview of the Meta and Anthropic cases, and as they point out the wins for the tech companies are less cut-and-dried than they seem at first.
Still, even though the answer may be different at some point, right now I think it's still true that so far individuals haven't succeeded in copyright claims against scrapers.

I'm having a blast playing it on my recently repaired PS Vita using PrBoom+.
Really, these people did astounding work, and the games are totally playable without having the original DOOM/DOOM II wads.

Create a mass amount of fake-ish looking content and then serve that up as real content to the scraper, effectively poisoning the AI? So impersonate a fake user post, a fake image with improper alt text.
This way, they might not catch onto it right away. A 403 means they'll instantly change their methodology because they know they're blocked.

RFK Jr. is a eugenicist. He thinks that good diet and exercise is enough to keep those with good genes healthy, and everyone else should be allowed to die. He is, as you say, siding with cancer, and with viruses too. He sees these things as nature's way of improving humanity by weeding out the "unfit." He's a health secretary who wants people to die. His job is to help them die.

Can say for myself have walked past 4 of those windows so far as many have died young from 30s to now 72 and next window is 80...
My mother died aged 46 when I was 20 after a five-year battle with cancer. My father died of cancer when he was 59. Yesterday my sister-in-law died just a few months after her diagnosis.
Cancer is all around us.

No, he actually *is* siding with cancer. Jamelle Bouie did an excellent little video about RFK's world view and how he views "health" in a way fundamentally orthogonal to the common understanding. "Healthy" is more akin to "pure". If you're healthy you won't get sick in the first place. And if you do get sick, it's because you deserved it, either through moral failing or inferior genes.

In the last three years, I have lost count how many people I've worked closely with has been taken away by Covid. Yesterday, one of the best guys I've worked with seemed fine when he arrived at work. An hour later, the fire department picked him up from the locker room floor.This is the first time in my long career I have lost people. It was always retirement and they would start drinking and pass away. But this Covid is getting people before they can retire. I was talking with an old friend I started my career with thirty years ago across the country and he said the same thing. He said most of his neighbors are gone. Covid got them.
Why I keep wearing a mask. And interviewing, hiring, and training. This is all new. Hiring new people was only to replace those who retired.
I remember when that clown claimed this was a hoax. It's turned my life upside down and this is the new normal.

But you see it when you look at the divorce rate, obesity, suicide rate, lawyers per capita, and life expectancy.
A lot of people in the US are cheering Trump because his economic policy has put a lot of people back to work, and you can't really deny lived experience... But I don't think Trump is actually going to change the direction the US is heading in, so maybe just a breath of air while drowning...

Go look at the results by class here. A lot of European style cheeses tend to be won by the Europeans but not always. Sometimes it's a bit surprising. We won the Brie over the French last time. Denmark won the Feta with USA at 2nd place, Switzerland destroyed everyone in the Gruyere, etc
Wisconsin won the Parmesan over the Italians. Crazy.

But yeah, our political climate is challenging, a populist president is testing the resilience of our strong democratic institutions (he couldn't do much harm as he wanted, but he will try), and we're having elections soon, the geopolitical outlook is uncertain so liie many other countries we're living in uncertain times.

I would love a piece of Humboldt Fog or Point Reyes Blue, but for 50 or 70 euros per kg they're simply not competitive with good European cheese. And Cowgirl Creamery prices seem to have skyrocketed.
