The whole "people shouldn't transition before age N because their brain isn't fully formed" thing is so catastrophically dumb.
Like, do you really think I wanted to be a fully formed man? Seriously. What's the upside?
For most trans people, the more of the wrong gender we get, the more pain it brings. Waiting until those changes are permanent only makes them worse. It's like if you have a gluten allergy and someone says they won't believe you until you've tried every loaf of bread in the bread aisle. More pain doesn't fix it. We don't get over gender dysphoria by exposure therapy. We just get more trauma that we have to live with the rest of our lives.
Instead, being able to transition BEFORE the brain and body are fully formed is the ideal. The earlier the better. The earlier you're able to get access to medical transition, the closer your fully formed body and mind will be to what they should be. That's a good thing! Waiting only causes harm.
The only reason why people think like this is because they refuse to believe trans people and trans experiences. They think that their default cis assumptions about people should override those people's own experiences. Sure, they'll grant some allowance in theory to adults who want to muck about with gender. But they don't actually believe we are who we say we are. Not if they think we have to have known since we were 4 but shouldn't transition until 25. The only way that makes sense is if they're either trying to be unbelievably cruel or if they simply don't believe we're real.
If you want to know if someone's an ally, look at how they treat trans kids. Because being an ally starts with believing us, that our experiences are real. And if they won't believe the kids, they're not going to believe you when you're 35 or 45 or 70.

@deilann Which again comes down to believing us, only where "us" here now includes all neurodivergant folks. They do the same things to autistic and ADHD kids. We tell our story and they tell us we're lying and then try to gaslight us with some alternative narrative in which we're the villains.
Of course they look at an autistic person and say their gender isn't real. They don't believe us about anything else. Why would they believe us about that?
The pigtailed girl likes this.
@deilann I've had a going mental model for a while that being trans is just another form of neurodivergance. Your brain got wired different and you ended up with a different gender. Woops! 🤷🏻♀️
There are problems with thinking about it that way, for sure. But it falls in the exact same bucket of "This should be no big deal. Just give the kid the right meds and don't treat them like trash."
@deilann "You're a member of a group known to be uncomfortable with lying therefore you must be lying" sure is a claim they make and expect to be taken seriously.
And are taken seriously. WTF.
i mean a lot of the narratives about trans men are we can't possibly be real because that's just our silly women brains becoming hysterical
bigots will literally find any reason trans people don't exist
but the real danger of these arguments is that they'll concede there are a few real trans people and they wouldn't deny that
they just deny that every person who tells them they're trans is and there's always a reason that'll work!
they just don't think trans people exist but need a motte for their bailey
@deilann Yup. I mean it's exactly the same thing my mom did when I came out. Every argument she made came down to some variation of, "But couldn't you just be less trans?" My transition made her uncomfortable and she was reaching for something to get me to bend to improve her comfort.
I thought about tossing in something about clocky trans women and something about trans men (though I wasn't sure what) at the end of that post because, really, what they're looking for is one narrow narrative they can feel comfortable supporting in theory while they deny the rest of us. I just didn't because I want keep it focused.
the wanting to keep it focused is also the problem with hot swap arguments like this, where you can always just throw in yet another exhausting "reason"
constantly being asked to prove your own existence is fucking exhausting no matter how ridiculous the "allegations" are or even obviously spurious
@deilann That's fair. My intention was to focus on the "listen to people" part. But there are plenty of people who will "support" trans kids and then guide their own (possibly trans) child away from the clocky trans woman in the grocery store out of fear.
At the end of the day, it's all of us (including detransitioners and those in hiding) or none of us and we know which the bigots would prefer.
all these arguments honestly boil down to "listen to people" so it's a good take away in general
the reason "trans person X" can't possibly know who they are is (insert excuse here) which is rebutted by "have you considered listening to people?"
oh, i totally forgot how shrier is a really good example of how this is all really an extension of how people treat kids
in her horrible book, she goes on about how she knows trans people exist and will refer to trans adults by their correct pronouns (she then goes on to as far as anyone can know from the details she gives, misgender every child in the book)
but
the definition of adult keeps getting stretched to the point that she's referring to adults in college in the way she pinky-promised she'd only refer to kids
our transness itself becomes proof of our immaturity
the only folks she genders correctly in the book are those who have some modicum of power/influence and folks can just look up to find out how laughable it would be to misgender them because like they have major YouTube channels and shit
Sensitive content
@deilann 1000%
It's entirely a power game. They'll properly gender those it costs them something to misgender. Maybe that something is just looking silly ("OMG! How could you think that person is a dude!") or it could be because that person has some amount of power. It's not because they're actually a decent human being who treats people with dignity.
See also every interaction with my parents. I intentionally came out to my siblings first to build a coalition so that by the time I came out to my parents the power dynamics in the family were in my favor. Worked a treat! They still don't believe or support me but they know better than to be total dipshits about it.
But part of why kids are such a canary is because they don't have that power.
Trans men often fall into that category, too. Sure, the dudes on instagram who've spent 3 years in the gym might get believed. But the young guy who's not even on T yet? Nope.
@deilann Not to add my cis stuff to this thread that isn’t about me, but they also do this to childfree women like me who would rather be dead than pregnant.
They refused to believe that someone with female parts wouldn’t want to grow and birth a baby more than anything else in life, so I was told my whole life that I just didn’t know what I wanted and that I would regret it later. And because of that I was unable to get sterilized until I was almost 40 years old, After birth control pills made me suicidal for years, and after a couple terminations.
Hey, i've got an idea! OK, so the brain isn't fully formed before age 25, huh? And that means people shouldn't be allowed to make major changes in their lives before then, huh? So.
What else should be forbidden in the interest of "protecting the children"?

@moriel No playing tennis before age 25. After all, it leaves marks on your bones that archæologists will clearly be able to tell when they dig up the skeleton in a thousand years!
Inter-arm bone mass and size asymmetries in children tennis players are maturity status specific: a 9-month study on the effects of training time across pubertal change and somatic growth[...]
All bone asymmetries were substantial. Tennis-induced bone gains were higher at pre- to early puberty in girls and at early to mid/late puberty in boys. Training enhanced mostly bone mass and maturity status enhanced mostly bone size; sex was not bone-change modeling impactful. Implications are discussed considering certain limitations.

Bone growth with exercise is best assessed by tennis-induced inter-arm asymmetries. Yet, the effects of training and maturation across puberty were unclear. This study explored arm bone growth across 9 months of training in 46 tennis players ...pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

@moriel they passed some gross anti-trans bills in New Hampshire this year. They claim they’re saving children by prohibiting trans kids from having breast augmentation or puberty blockers, but if the kid is cis they can get some DD implants, and puberty blockers are safe if they have precocious puberty. So it’s obviously not about saving kids at all.
Furthermore, we were able to finally outlaw child marriage effective 1/1/25, but before the end of January a republican woman sponsored a bill to bring it back if a man wanted to marry a child & if that man was in the military.
It’s not about “saving kids”.

If a 2-year-old cis boy loses his penis in a car accident, at what age is his brain developed enough to decide whether he wants the life-altering surgery of mutilating his body to create an artificial penis?
We all know most transphobes would say "immediately." 2-year-olds are definitely mature enough to make permanent life-altering decisions, just so long as those permanent life-altering decisions align with what transphobes think is normal.

Ah yes, because teenagers are property of their parents...unless the teenagers are trans and their parents support them, in which case teenagers are the property of the government. Unless a government agency is supportive of trans rights, in which case teenagers are the property of someone else's parents.
The point is teenagers are property, and the politicians will continually shift who their "owners" are based on whatever causes the most harm.

As a little follow up...
This wasn't about conservatives. I don't care about them. They're a lost cause and they can take their bigotry to hell with them.
This was about people who call themselves liberals.
Also, there are more groups that get regularly ignored than just kids. If anything, there's starting to be a cadre of good liberals who like supporting trans kids because kids are cute. You can see them in their girl scout uniforms and buy cookies from them. People love to play the hero and protect these cute, helpless kids.
That's infantilization, not dignity.
What about that really clocky trans woman in the grocery store who clearly hasn't had any sort of medical transition. Are you going to believe her? Are you going to treat her as a woman even if your years of gender detection training are screaming at you otherwise?
What about the teenage girl-shaped person who says they really wish they were a guy? Are you going to believe him? Or are you just going to do what every other person in this world already did and write off his desires as just a silly fantasy about how the world would be better "if only" and give him some "the grass isn't always greener" speech?
Being an ally isn't about playing the hero. It's about believing us and going to bat for us just because we deserve dignity, even when you don't understand.
We don't need spiritual leaders to "set us straight". We don't need heroes who fly the rainbow flag but are really in it for their "good liberal" reputation. We need to be believed. We need dignity.

@JessTheUnstill There aren't many genuine trolley problems in the world.
This is one of them, and the "popular" solution to it is ridiculously wrong.
your brain isn't considered fully developed until like 25, and the insinuation that people can't make decisions for themselves until 25 is absurd
so just as a premise, the entire idea is bad
@JessTheUnstill The catch is, medicine with genuinely working medical substances is a ridiculously new thing, so a lot of things discovered since early 1900s were actually bleeding-edge medicine, as the frontiers of science went, at the time of discovery.
For one curious example, before HRT became available for transgender people, a crude form of testosterone replacement therapy was sold to old rich men. (Due to the different ethical standards of the time, experiments with medicines likely to have positive effects could only be done on rich people.)
@JessTheUnstill Welctually, it's rare for a new medicine to perform this well in a study. It mostly only happens near the frontiers of new medicine, such as cancer research and neglected genetic disorders, which is to say, disorders that people believing in Standard Humans' supremacy tended to not care about because they would never suffer from one, or so they thought.

More pain doesn't fix it.

some of my observations:
- these people couldn't possibly know what it feels like biologically to be trans since their body produces sex hormones at levels compatible with their brain
- for the same reason anyone who mistakenly starts HRT would feel like total shit and likely stop after a few weeks
- the aversion to HRT for trans kids is part of the broader idea that anyone under 18 is completely incapable of self-responsibility, popular even in (right-)libertarian groups
*...*
*...*
- it is extremely hard to persuade these people to reconsider their views at all even when presented with fairly solid scientific research and data on trans physiology, GAHT safety, rate of regret, effects on mental health, etc.
- religion is a huge influence, and i've lost count of how many times bible verses related to *homosexuality* have been extrapolated to trans people by the 'christian taliban'

@lispi314 The $40 price tag just covers manufacturing costs and a 30% profit margin. The $28K is the price charged in the USA. The USA subsidizes the rest of the world's drug marketplace. We have for decades now. We in the USA pay 10x the cost outside the USA for most patented drugs.
Now, about price. Drug companies are a for profit business, they get one drug out of about 100 they investigate. Thus the true cost is far more than what this article quotes. @kcarruthers @derekarunge
I doubt that this is actually the case and more strongly suspect that manufacturers and drug companies charge that much in the USA because they can.
If the drugs are not patent-encumbered then selling them internationally /requires/ being reasonable with pricing because the USA does not have a monopoly on drug manufacture.
> Now, about price. Drug companies are a for profit business, they get one drug out of about 100 they investigate. Thus the true cost is far more than what this article quotes.
Which suggests that perhaps we shouldn't keep medical research in the private domain since it carries inherent perverse incentives.

It really isn’t! Kids are more open minded and smarter than adults, they can grasp a lot if one really wants them to learn
On the flip side, thats how brainwashed people are created, probably.
And most people actually agree with this.
But most people also don’t want to get politically involved when a brutal religious fundamentalist regime forces their views on everyone.
With the worldwide surge in fascism, we are reminded that it is times like these that make future schoolchildren ask, "Why didn't anyone stop them?"
My hope is that, when future schoolchildren read about the abuse directed at gay and trans people today, they will ask, "Why did anyone even care?"

IABs are, for FB's purposes, "ad-blocker blockers". Cheat codes for the enterprising panopticon proprietor. You installed a browser, then added an anti-tracking tool to it? And you tapped "do not track"?
Apple sold you up the river. And the mechanism is as simple as it is disgusting.
Bodil reshared this.
Instead of taking you to your browser, FB's IABs load pages in a knock-off browser which doesn't respect your privacy preferences (nevermind a11y customisations, etc.).
Extensions? Gone. And because FB has code on every top site, that's enough.
FB's tracking is so pervasive in modern web pages that it doesn't need to exfiltrate data from the IAB to track you. It just needs to keep you away from your *real* browser, where it might not be able to join up clicks/taps.
...and it's the proprietary APIs from app stores that make it so hard to escape one ecosystem for another. The entire point of the exercise is to subvert interoperability, and to do *that*, it's necessary to keep the anchor apps happy. Which is why Apple and Google let FB spy on you via the web.
Apple isn't defending your privacy, it's trying to retreat just far enough into the hedges that it hopes you don't notice it dangling FB and TikTok out to take the fall.

What all of them? From all companies, and all variants? That's more than a dozen COVID-19 vaccines. It must be 10s or 100s of millions or thereabouts of individual doses.
Where the hell do they all go? They need to be kept in a verified cold chain if they're to be sent somewhere else to be administered in presumably other (ideally developing) countries. I can't imagine the Trump regime would bother or even would have the ability and expertise (given the many CDC sackings) if they wanted to organise such a large scale shipment of those vaccines across the globe.

I’d hoped that we would elect more Dems and they would continue to adopt better voting systems (like STAR and IRV) which would make it more viable to have more parties, and eventually Dem factions would separate. Electing republicans has made that harder

The image features a man dressed in a formal suit with a white flower pinned to his lapel, holding a can of WD-40 in his left hand. The text at the top of the image reads, "If you can't drink WD-40, then why does it come with a straw?!" This text humorously questions the inclusion of a straw with a product that is not intended to be consumed.

I also think I'm not vulnerable to it. If someone walks up to me 'to help' in a shop I usually tell them 'no thanks'. I often know more about the product I want to buy than the sales persons. @vgoller the one time we bought a car, it was like:

Paternalism sucks for everyone.
@martinvermeer @Gorfram not an American, but as far as I can tell this is the problem in every western culture. Probably in every patriarchy.
I guess matriarchal societies would have very similar problems, but I admit I’m curious how those would play out.
@Gorfram OMG YES! Back in my 20s when I would date men and they would exhibit horrible behavior I would have to picture them as little boys to get over the ick and “forgive and forget”. Kind of like a “forgive them because they know not what they do, this little temper tantrum is how they express feelings!” Ew.
And it makes me mad that I thought I had to do that. But I am Gen X and a lot of us were told that if we weren’t married or pumping out babies there was something wrong with us. And also because rent became unaffordable after 9/11 so I was dating to find someone to split rent with.

So the attempt by Democrats and supporters to sway young male voters pointing out how important their female relatives had been during their formative years probably was the worst possible tack to take. Given that many young men will suffer from this "fragile masculinity" that the first post mentioned.
Why would you as a young man want to admit that you needed women to become a man? Why would you then vote for a female candidate?

Every image I see is chalk. They chalked it over in rainbow, which as a form of protest is fine. In fact, if every time it fades or is washed, it gets rechalked I think would be more powerful in many respects as form of protest, but is the reporting just really bad or was there actual paint used?

It’s publication day for the new edition of my first poetry collection, ‘You Took the Last Bus Home’.
It’s been unavailable for nine months, following the demise of its original publisher, Unbound. I’m so delighted that Picador stepped into the breach to bring out this shiny new edition.
Hopefully it’s now back on the shelves of most bookshops – and is available to order online from the usual places.

This is 100% a "Let them fight." moment, but we really need actual progressives to learn to fight and be mean.
We can NOT reach across the aisle to people who, among other things, are willing to defend a child rapist. Mainstream conservatives are not the political opposition, they are the enemy. Progressives need to act like it.
@peteramthor nobody's forgetting that.
However, most people have perspective.
Most people can spot an enemy psyop when they see it.
The last decade has been people failing to learn that "the enemy of my enemy is a tool, probably in both common senses of the word, to use and then discard."
Though Newsom has the advantage that he has drowned out the various Republican "don't worry, I'm nice now; let's go back to pretending that systemic oppression was just about budgets" comeback tours.

@albertcardona Yep, the Ubuntu guide (though currently unreachable for me?) should serve you fine.
In case you haven’t done this before, a word of encouragement:
Don’t worry. You can’t break anything. You get as many attempts as you need (hopefully few).
Have fun!
@albertcardona also, from my experience, the hardest thing is to get the target laptop to boot from the bloody USB thumb drive.
This step is shrouded in mystery, and most mortals end up needing a few attempts.
After that, it’s probably mostly plain sailing
@sibrosan @slothrop @albertcardona if the Windows installation still works, you can type in the run command:
Shutdown -fw -t 0
At least, if memory serves me right. The -fw switch basically instructs the reboot to go into the firmware settings (aka uefi / bios)
As always, check before running commands from someone on the internet 😀 Hope this helps!

Maybe look for "boot into bios" instructions that begin from windows "advanced startup options", first. Easier to start frombinside windows with a GUI if you can.

Boot the windows 10 machine off the new USB stick, answer a couple questions and come back in 15 mins when your new Debian machine is ready.
Mint is an option for windows users. If it's different per se, it has similarities and it is recommended for the windows users habits who prefer to be in a familiar configuration. And you can go to another system later.

Except that, it doesn't prevent malware. Note that this news article is from today. I went to find the most recent example of this and it turns out that I didn't even have to go back as far as yesterday.
Proper safety is done by reducing kernel attack surface, reducing the size of the TCB, and making it easy for applications to respect the principle of least privilege so that ones that don't stand out as things that obviously request more permissions than they should have.

It's a genuine conflict between user rights and the need to protect the average person. Phones hold our banking apps, 2FA tokens, mics, cameras, and countless secrets.
When a sideloaded app steals data, the user doesn't say, "My sideloaded app failed." They say, "My Android/iPhone got hacked." The OS developer takes the blame.
Android's approach—allowing it, but behind a clear security warning—seems like a decent compromise in this difficult balancing act.

In original comment I didn't saw info about this announcement from yesterday (android-developers.googleblog.…)
Seeing this proposition it seems more scary.
First for folks from Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, rest of the world is more complicated.
Interesting if in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand this will become legal requirement.
Here it is more than security, I would say that hampering user owners rights isn't biggest issue, but this seems as a way to limit free speech. Because Google may be informed by government of some country that they forbid app like Signal, so Google should not allow signing of Signal.
Still if there will be legal requirement they will need to do it. So it may be first step in killing cryptography.

But on the other side of a fine line I imagine (perhaps older) game consoles: when the original Nintendo came out, that company was not expected to help you run Atari software on their hardware.
They'd not prevent it - if you could figure out it, good on you. But Nintendo shouldn't be expected to make that work.
Not-supporting versus actively-preventing is the key difference for me.

So how exactly is locking down the signing keys for apps that are allowed to run at all and connecting them with government ID for developers helping security?

It doesn't ask credentials for me upon install. It just wants me to allow alternative app stores or the Files app (for downloaded APK files) as an installation source for "unknown apps". It also asks that for the Play Store, given that that is a third-party optional app on GrapheneOS.
The "install unknown apps from source" permission doesn't have anything to do with who signed the app, just seems to have to do with the fact that it's not a bundled/default app installer like GrapheneOS App Store is on GrapheneOS.
