Let go of the deceptive idea of "the tech itself." The truth is that there is nothing "in" the software at all. Its only animating force is the people using it. Trying to separate technology from people is a fool's errand at best; it actively covers up bad deeds done by people using technology to do them at worst.

Let's go Mastodon! It was a very interesting blog post, I greatly enjoyed reading it. Especially in light of the new changes in Metas moderation policies and Trumps election, I believe we absolutely need a free alternative based in Europe.
@Lydie we agree completely, and that is a key part of what we are doing - remaining a European-based organisation, with a goal to have instances all over the world.
Honestly, I'd love to see Mastodon as a viable Twitter alternative, but by now I think it never will be. It's a completely different experience. When I open Mastodon, I see a maze of text, 3rd degree replies to I don't know what, and a star button that essentially nobody but me uses, because it does (almost) nothing.
I understand that some people like this type of experience, but me (and a lot of other ex twitter users who went to bluesky instead) would've preferred something else.

I use the star button like that too, but somehow almost nobody else does. When I check my feed, I see usually 0 stars, even for posts that have hundreds of reposts. For me this is just a gasping unused space.

It seems rare that American programmers do public service things like this. Makes me kind of ashamed. I guess the European system is different? That programmers can find themselves with the free time for large projects without getting kicked out of their homes for not paying the rent?

Placing IPR in a non-profit trust is a model that should be used more extensively.
Such a trust's constitution can enshrine their future use, including licensing within specified constraints, ensuring all future use of the copyright, patents or brands contribute to social and community benefit.
Who could say it any better? Social media has to be a part of our public infrastructure or else it is just a tool of public manipulation and oppression.
It is antithetical for social media to be owned by a corporation.
What I find amazing and very frustrating is that even when opinion journalists address these issues seriously and thoughtfully they almost always fail to mention Mastodon -- as here:

the only quibble would be the TLDs: .social and .online are controlled by USA providers. there’s still vulnerability to abuse of power with the TLDs being under USA jurisdiction.
@blogdiva The US non-profit has no relationship with the german structure, and never had. The stripping of the german non-profit status is coincidental and completely unrelated. We try to use EU-based companies where we can, unfortunately it is very hard to do it for everything, domain names being a good example, and we consider this very low-risk (especially compared to other things like legal jurisdictions, or shareholder structure)
I think hosting Mastodon in Switzerland and Germany is the best option for keeping data private. These countries have strong data protection laws, so it makes sense for ensuring our info stays safe.
Mastodon is the platform that deserves our presence and attention (to followers over the skies).

Mais TFTP est là pour ça : pour passer de l'imagination au réel. Du rêve à la réalité.
Notre Comité scientifique a estimé, en 2022, que rien n'était techniquement impossible dans la conception imaginée par Yves Parlier, et que sa vision était maline : ne pas placer le matériel électronique sur le kite lui-même, mais sur le bateau, et créer un pilotage automatique dans une 《kitebox 》, une sorte de petite boîte qui peut s'installer partout sans réduire la capacité de charge du navire.
Alors, on s'est mis au boulot.
Yves Parlier, le génie du vent, a fait équipe avec Marc THIENPONT, recruté par Team for the Planet, un dirigeant pragmatique qui a fait toute sa carrière dans la marine marchande, qui a apporté toute son expérience en matière de gestion de projets maritimes de grande ampleur
Ensemble, et avec l'argent injecté par TFTP, ils ont démontré en deux ans que ce qui n'était qu'un doux rêve pouvait devenir réalité.
Aujourd'hui, ils sont la seule entreprise au monde ayant réussi à faire voler un kite de 100 m² en pilotage automatique complet. Et la voile de 200 m² est en production.
Les progrès techniques et commerciaux accomplis sont uniques et montrent que, quand on a une volonté de fer de lutter contre le changement climatique, rien ne peut vous arrêter.
Désormais, ils sont à la tête d'une entreprise qui, lorsqu'elle équipera des milliers puis des dizaines de milliers de bateaux, permettra de générer des centaines de millions d'euros d'économies de carburant chaque année.
Sa valorisation financière sera alors à la hauteur de son impact carbone.
