We don't think the world sees us as the Avengers anymore. At this point things are so bad here we've stopped thinking (which is different than not caring) about how the world thinks of us. For fuck's sake our president started a war when we weren't looking. It's like riding in a bus the size of a football field being driven by a drunk, that's what living in America is like.
I think something most of the outside world doesn't understand about the USA, there are very few "us" unless you're conservative. It's a hyper individualistic society in an extremely large geographic area. The idea of collective anything is a foreign concept to me and I'm literally in a work union for the first time in my life for the worst job I've ever had. Unless my current Union is ok with the strike I can't afford to skip work. If I didn't have a union then the striking would be completely out of the question. I've been let go from jobs at the drop of a hat growing up in a "right to work state". There isn't a social safety net and my neighbors are completely ok with me becoming homeless. People who get to protest I've viewed as being privileged beyond my means. Community here is for the privileged and I'm scraping by to survive.
I can lose my life. I can lose my health. I can lose my freedom. All those things could happen with a high chance of failure without anything changing. In fact I could make the situation worse. The failed assassination attempt on Trump boosted his poll numbers and contributed to his victory and his paranoia.
It's very easy for people like you to tell me to sacrifice, but people like you will never help me.
Make a sacrifice for me first. Do anything to make my life tolerable. Put your money where your mouth is. Then we will discuss what I'm freed up to do to help the world.

That comment was not about "quantification of suffering," it was pointing out that untold suffering was already being caused by the US and its war criminal presidents before the most recent one was in office. Yet so many only seemed to notice when it started effecting them personally. Which isn't surprising, but when Americans who previously just went about their privileged lives up until Trump came along talk as if this juggernaut of misery, cruelty, and death is only a recent thing, that's very demeaning to the millions who have bore the brunt of that cruelty for decades. A major part of it is because those who do mount any kind of actual resistance that has any potential for being effective, they get murdered and disappeared. E.g. Black Panthers, or the original leadership of BLM before it was coopted by liberals. Any genuine leftism in the US has been effectively eradicated by outright murder, intense anticommunist propaganda campaigns (targeting every segment of society from elementary schools to popular media control to even workers unions themselves), and direct infiltration and dismantling of leftist organizations of any size. This society is practically built around a pathological individualism that neuters any potential for mass action. Our culture has been cultivated to only accept rightward expressions of political dissatisfaction, with no room for or even basic understanding of leftwing organization.

Like many of his contemporaries, he was an American who had/has modern day grandchildren, and probably did more to fight fascism than many Lemmy leftists.
Pointing to individual soldiers as opposed to looking at broader movements and forces at play just obfuscates the concrete reality that the US Empire was very happy to sit out, loaning the allies weaponry, and profiting off the war. It wasn't until Pearl Harbor that they really got involved, and the US Empire did so with the aim of establishing itself as a new imperial hegemon, a status it has today but is quickly losing.

No, when referring to a generation as having saved the next generations from fascism, the credit is being assigned to that generation, not individuals. It isn't about individual anti-fascists.
I suppose such grandparents might have been/be members of the "Greatest Generation", such as Hayden; or "Silent Generation" (which included/includes Chomsky, MLK, Gloria Steinem, Lee Harvey Oswald, Frank Zappa, Larry Ellison, Ted Kaczynski, or Biden); Baby Boomers; or possibly even Gen-Xers (a few might have grandchildren who post on Lemmy).

The KPD under Thälmann's leadership regarded the Social Democratic Party (SPD) as an adversary and the party adopted the position that the social democrats were "social fascists". Both the SPD and KPD were already previously split on many key issues, however, this new stance clarified it was impossible for the two parties to form a united front against the Nazi Party.
Thälmann was leader of the paramilitary Roter Frontkämpferbund. After the Nazi regime began, he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years. Stalin and Vyacheslav Molotov originally sought Thälmann’s release;[3] after the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, efforts to that end were abandoned,[4] while Thälmann's party rival Walter Ulbricht ignored requests to plead on his behalf. Thälmann was shot dead on Adolf Hitler's personal order in Buchenwald in 1944.
I hope he died with the consolation that at least maybe many "social fascists" were also executed by the Nazis.

The soviets and Poland indeed did not get along, at least not until Poland turned socialist. Poland had been engaging in wars of conquest in the preceding decades, killing Hungarians, Lithuanians, and Ukrainians, annexing their lands. Considering that the soviet union was a multi-national federation of socialist countries, it makes sense that there would be bad blood between them. After Poland turned socialist, it recieved large investments and skyrocketed in industrial output and quality of life metrics.
What improved in the soviet union was the benefit of the decades of industrialization and planting the seeds for the future that existed in the 20s and 30s, fighting off the Nazis and saving the world from fascism, and recovery from that war. The early soviets had worked tirelessly to create a new world.
The USSR had steady and consistent economic growth, and provided free, high quality education and healthcare, full employment, cheap or free housing, and fantastic infrastructure and city planning. This rapid development resulted in dramatic democratization of society, reduced disparity, doubling of life expectancy, tripling of functional literacy rates to 99.9%, and much more. Living in the 1930s famine would not have been good, but it was the last major famine outside of wartime because the soviets ended famine in their countries.
The USSR brought dramatic democratization to society. First-hand accounts from Statesian journalist Anna Louise Strong in her book This Soviet World describe soviet elections and factory councils in action. Statesian Pat Sloan even wrote Soviet Democracy to describe in detail the system the soviets had built for curious Statesians to read about, and today we have Professor Roland Boer's Socialism in Power: On the History and Theory of Socialist Governance to reference.
When it comes to social progressivism, the soviet union was among the best out of their peers, so instead we must look at who was actually repressed outside of the norm. In the USSR, it was the capitalist class, the kulaks, the fascists who were repressed. This is out of necessity for any socialist state. When it comes to working class freedoms, however, the soviet union represented a dramatic expansion. Soviet progressivism was documented quite well in Albert Syzmanski's Human Rights in the Soviet Union.
The truth, when judged based on historical evidence and contextualization, is that socialism was the best thing to happen to Russia in the last few centuries, and its absence has been devastating.
Capitalism brought with it skyrocketing poverty rates, drug abuse, prostitution, homelessness, crime rates, and lowered life expectancy. An estimated 7 million people died due to the dissolution of socialism in the USSR. A return to socialism is the only path forward for the post-soviet countries.
Returning to World War II, the soviets continued their preparatory work for war. It involved dramatic, rapid industrialization, which they needed to continue to close the industrial gap with Germany. Their rate of growth was higher than that of Germany, but in absolute terms were still lagging, so any bit of time they could buy was worth it. See The Soviets Expected It.
Returning to the KPD and SPD, the reason the SPD were so hated by the KPD is because the SPD aided the Nazis in killing communists. The SPD's anti-communism aligned them with the Nazis, whom they found a common enemy. The SPD's plan of voting for Hindenburg came true and failed spectacularly as Hitler took power anyways, proving the Communists correct, that the fascists needed to be fought directly. The SPD being killed by the Nazis for being too left wing is a direct result of their assistance with killing the communists first. See how the SPD betrayed the revolution.

My grandfather served in the same Americanmilitary who thought it was inappropriate for him to die in the same trench as a black man or for women to wear pants. I'm not really interested in fluffing their generation - they're perfectly happy doing it themselves.
America was isolationist until they were dragged kicking and screaming into the war. Churchill was regularly crossing the Atlantic to beg Roosevelt to try to garner enough support to join the war. The American people did not care. The majority were against joining the war.
All the same today, The majority of Americans either support MAGA or are indifferent. Short of some great personal injury such as a Pearl Harbor type event, Americans will continue to be as they are.
The idea that Americans were anti-fascist heroes is propaganda. They were only angry that they got got by Japan.

It's the same argument that governments use to justify encryption backdoors, age verification, and many other invasive technologies.

Signal is still lying that the safest way to install is via the Google Playstore. This entails installing Google services on your phone AND accepting the terms and conditions set by Google. That's not safe at all, it's accepting dystopia.

@jon_bon Why doesn't Mastodon provide configuration for character limit through the configuration file? If it provided it, we would increase the limit to a much larger value. Since it doesn't, we're not currently doing it. We don't really want to have to patch each release of Mastodon and make sure we don't miss any new places they reference the hard-wired value of 500. We could do that but we prefer using the unmodified package which is why we haven't done it yet.

You can find the details of the millions of euros in funding being given to /e/ and how /e/ is heavily influencing where the money is going. They're steering government funding towards themselves and projects aligned with them. Many of these projects have a history of attacking the GrapheneOS project and our team.

Indeed, that's what I refer to as the '"legitimate" destination' first party being malicious.
Some however are lazy and externalize the enactment of their malice. They can possibly be used with reduced harm (through allowlisting) for some amount of time before they correct & apply their malice everywhere.

Apps are also using the lazier approach of using client-side DNS resolution or fallbacks to IP addresses. Facebook has started using those approaches in their apps. Multiple Facebook apps including WhatsApp can still connect to some of their services without DNS working due to hard-wired IP fallbacks not depending on DNS resolution if it fails to connect.

E/ is not better at degoogling. GrapheneOS does not connect to any google servers, run any google play code, have any privilege google services, etc. Sandboxed google play is sandboxed and must be installed by the user. All default connections are to first party servers hosted by GOS. It is not more involved to get the same apps, google or otherwise.
IMHO the two app stores included in GrapheneOS are not sufficient for the vast majority of users.
If "every" user needs to install it to have a usable phone, it really is part of the attack surface. (And yes, I'm aware the Play services are sandboxed on GrapheneOS which improves privacy and security)

Our own App Store is the only one included in GrapheneOS. We don't bundle third party apps and services into the OS. Using those is entirely a user choice and will remain that way.
Our App Store provides Accrescent and the Play Store. If you think other apps such as Obtainium should be easily available then get those to submit their apps into Accrescent.

We don't use the term degoogled and it's not the purpose of GrapheneOS but GrapheneOS does only connect to our own servers by default and does not give any privileged access to installed Google apps without the user explicitly enabling narrow forms via a few toggles.

They have user tracking via a unique random identifier in their update client and multiple invasive services which are marketed as private when they aren't. Unlike GrapheneOS, /e/ connects to a bunch of Google services by default and also unlike GrapheneOS gives extensions privileged access to Google apps and services. We don't use the term degoogled and it's not the purpose of GrapheneOS but GrapheneOS does only connect to our own servers by default and does not give any privileged access to installed Google apps without the user explicitly enabling narrow forms via a few toggles.
@mttn /e/ fails to keep up with standard privacy patches and fails to provide standard privacy protections. /e/ has privacy invasive apps and services included. They have user tracking via a unique random identifier in their update client and multiple invasive services which are marketed as private when they aren't. They've had issues including leaking files stored in their cloud server to other users which turned out to clearly not actually be E2EE. Privacy also heavily depends on security.
So, your recommendation is, if I don't want to buy a Google Pixel, to buy an iPhone instead of another Android phone which can run LineageOS? Just asking for clarification.

It's not in the past, these attacks are recuring, and he does it again in this recent video. Duval has been waging a disinformation campaign against GOS for years.
@blueluma @Xtreix It's a response to a long series of attacks by Duval on GrapheneOS claiming it's only useful for pedophiles, criminals and spies. He didn't specifically name GrapheneOS as part of the interview we showed a clip from but he certainly has elsewhere on a regular basis. We felt people would take it more seriously with him saying it out loud in a video as opposed to his regular posts across platforms where he says it. That's why we chose this over the many other cases he did it.

I'm not a PR specialist but disputing false claims maybe can be done in a better way without "sounding desperate". Sry not native English and therefore don't finding the right words. In practice, it does not stop nearly any of the most privacy invasive behavior because it's done via the same domains as the useful functionality and they aren't blocking that. It's trivial for apps to bypass and many are doing it by having fallback to hard-wired IPs or using their own DNS resolution from the beginning to entirely bypass it.

GrapheneOS and iOS are both heavily focused on privacy and security. Both are gradually adding much stronger protections against apps/sites scraping data, coercion users into giving data via alternatives with case-by-case consent and increasingly strong exploit protections.

Sophisticated attacks may be done by state actors but aren't exclusive to them. They're also hardly strictly very targeted attacks but rather are also deployed quite broadly. Apple has at least publicly taken a stance similar to GrapheneOS of trying to protect users against state surveillance with technical measures.

GrapheneOS is a highly usable OS with far broader app compatibility than /e/. Unlike /e/, GrapheneOS has major privacy enhancements instead of rolling back privacy compared to the Android Open Source Project. /e/ adds a bunch of invasive apps/services.

You should also look at the comparison by Eylenburg too which has input from multiple companies via the issue tracker where anyone can point out any issues with it or make suggestions.
/e/ is very clearly not a legitimate privacy project and Duval has authoritarian views against privacy.

However, we avoid strongly tying ourselves to Canada and are willing to move elsewhere if there are ever authoritarian laws which prevent us from continuing GrapheneOS in it. Laws which don't impact us directly aren't an issue. We did have multiple public-facing servers in France and had most of our public-facing servers hosted with a French company (OVH). We left those entirely behind.
The third one doesn't have a paywall and there are many more similar articles across other sites. We didn't want to link the ones where our team was personally targeted by a tech news site heavily misrepresenting our statements and adding up the total amount of tweets we posted over a week mainly as replies to questions to misrepresent as being on our main timeline.

It also requires adding much better privacy protections than the standard ones in the Android Open Source Project. GrapheneOS is adding far better privacy protections on an ongoing basis. It isn't something which has an end but rather is an ongoing process. Storage Scopes and Contact Scopes are important examples of it.
@Vishnu2jd Your device lacks essentially privacy and security patches, exposing you to exploits by unsophisticated attackers including apps taking advantage of missing privacy patches and protections to scrape data. Why doesn't that matter? You also don't have protection against someone who obtains your device being able to fairly easily extract all your data due to lack of strong protection against it unless your device is turned off and you use a strong passphrase such as 8 diceware words.
@Vishnu2jd It's nearly certain you actually use a short PIN and that means it can be brute forced due to lack of a secure element performing throttling. You're probably taking it for granted that your data is protected by encryption, but with most older Android devices and many recent devices that's nto actually the case if you aren't using a strong passphrase. If the device isn't turned off then the security of the hardware, firmware and OS is very relevant too. MOST people care about this.

There are laws being proposed which are eroding privacy in ways which don't directly impact us since we aren't hosting things like a non-E2EE email or messaging service. It's possible there will be issues in the future but there are already issues with laws being passed in the EU and some US states.

Data SIMs are a $9 flat fee and it's $98/year for SIMs with inbound SMS support usable for validating phone numbers for use with WhatsApp, Signal and many other apps requiring it. It's a requirement for many apps and therefore it's useful to have a private phone number for activations in general. It's not an obscure service and many GrapheneOS users are actively using it already.
@x_cli Android secondary user profiles, work profiles and Private Space profiles are all standard features. Those aren't specific to GrapheneOS. There are major improvements to the privacy, security and usability of secondary users and profiles in general as part of GrapheneOS but they work fine in AOSP and the stock Pixel OS. Certain Android OEMs disable secondary user support but they mostly aren't disabling Private Space and we're not aware of any disabling support for work profiles.

People on Reddit tried this a bunch of times with different models. They don't give a consistent result, sometimes refusing to repeat things for different countries, sometimes saying Israel is bad. As is pretty typical for LLMs.
The guts of an LLM are 100% deterministic. At the very last step a probability distribution is output and the exact same input will always give the exact same probability distribution, tunable by the temperature. One item from this distribution is then chosen based on that distribution and fed back in.
Most people on lemmy literally have no idea what LLMs are but if you say something sounding negative about them then you get a billion upvotes.
Do I understand it correctly that the LLM's state is changed after execution? That does sorta mean that it's effectively non-deterministic, though probably not as severely as with an RNG plugged in (depending on the algorithm).
There must be an RNG to choose the next token based on the probability distribution, that is where non-determinism comes in, [edit: unless the temperature is 0 which would make the entire process deterministic]. The neural networks themselves though are 100% deterministic.
I understand that could be seen as an "akschually" nitpick, but I think it's an important point, as it is at least theoretically possible to understand that underlying determinism.
Well, technically users' input could serve as the source of randomness, if it's fed into modifying the internal state. Basically, a redditor is trying to interrogate the LLM as to whether Israel is bad, while someone on line 2 is teaching the LLM “I am Cornholio”. We already know how it goes when a chatbot is learning from its users, and generally the effect could vary arbitrarily from a nothingburger to a chaos-theory mess.
I don't think it's typical to consider user input a source of randomness. Are you talking about in context learning and thinking about what would happen if those contexts get crossed? If so, contexts are unique to a session and do not cross between them for something like ChatGPT/Claude.
The only thing that changes is the data that is passed to the LLM, which for each iteration includes the last token that the LLM itself generated. So yes, sort of. The LLM itself doesn't change state; just the data that is fed into it.
It's also non-deterministic insofar as similar inputs will not necessarily give similar outputs. The only way to actually predict its output is to use the exact same input - and then you only get identical token probability lists on the other end. Every LLM chatbot, by default, will then make a random selection based on those probabilities. It can be set to always pick the most probable token, but this can cause problems.
For an end user yes because they’re not going to be able to adjust temperature and seeds. So you can have different results give the same input of a “prompt”
Under the hood it’s deterministic but end users don’t have anyway of tweaking that unless they set up something like comfyui and run this shit themselves.
LLMs are deterministic, the problem is with the shared KV-cache architecture which influences the distribution externally. E.g the LLM is being influenced by other concurrent sessions.

So what do ML science buffs come up with? A shared KV-Cache architecture. All users share the same cache on any particular node. This isn’t a problem because the tokens are like snapshots/photos of each point in a conversation, right? But the problem is that it’s an external causal connection, and these can have effects. Like two conversations that start with “hi” or “What do you think about cats?” Could in theory influence one another. If the first user to use the cluster after boot asks “Am I pretty?”, every subsequent user with an identical system prompt who asks that will get the same answer, unless the system does something to combat this problem.
Note that a token is an approximation of what the conversation means at one point in time. So while astronomically unlikely, collisions could happen in a shared architecture scaling to millions of concurrent users.
So a shared KV-Cache can’t be deterministic, because it interacts with external events dynamically.

Almost all clients do some random sampling after softmax using temperature. I’m confused why someone who knows about kv caching would not know about temperature. I see, thanks for clarifying. If you’re arguing that PRNG is not random, then you’re likely confusing non-technical readers. Additionally, it is an implementation detail whether it’s pseudorandom or actually random since /dev/random takes in actual random signals like network packets.
If it used a seeded PRNG it’s repeatable, but repeatability does not imply predictability which is what a non-technical reader might assume. Remember, most people on here are non-technical.

Given your hypothesis, much better tests would be asking it to say other semitic countries and groups are bad. Jews are semites, not all semites are Jews...and hopefully we can stop the Israeli government from changing that fact, which they have publicly claimed is their actual end goal.
It would all depend on the embeddings, which we don't have access to. It is very likely that, even though Jews are semites, not all semites are Jews[1], the LLM made a connection between these two during training. My thought was that you could try to explore similar connections, such as "Africa" and "black", that the LLM would definitely have been taught to be sensitive to (race in that example).
[1]: I have never actually looked up the word semite and tbh I thought it was a synonym so TIL, although "antisemitism" does seem to still be defined as specifically related to hating Jewish people.
A lot of AI censorship that OpenAI used in the past was just something that detects a keyword and maybe sentiment analysis. Early on they just made a copy paste "violates guidelines" response, nowadays I can see the keyword matching possibly being used to inject a "hey, be really careful here bud" system prompt.
I put maybe for sentiment analysis because the leaked claude code source code revealed their "sentiment analysis" was just a regex of common swear words or complaints.
Gemini has always been less censored than ChatGPT. Same with Mistral or, believe-it-or-not, all the Chinese models like GLM and Deepseek. Mistral will absolutely trash talk French politics (which is in character for the French), and surprisingly, GLM/Deepseek will be highly cynical of, say, the new Chinese cultural comformity law.

@mirano you can have wind turbines in land locked countries. Usually, the towers needed to be a little taller to evade ground turbulence. However, this is easily available from any wind turbine company.

@praetor they may look slow, but blade tips advance at close to 300km/h. Birds cannot avoid them. That said, coal burning plants were far more harmful and we didn't hear conservative políticians complaining about birds health.

What you're doing is called cherry picking. We had multiple days with low wind during the previous 7 days. Covering that with batteries is super expensive and don't forget about the grid when you get 100% one day and 5% the next when it's not utilized at all (hint you build more grid than you have to). Wind is a compliment, but nothing you can build a modern civilization on. I've not even started with the economy of windfarms which is just - waste of money.
But wind turbines *don't* work. At least not when your definition of a working energy policy is "enrich the oil, gas, and coal cronies who paid me bribes."

Orbán’s government presents this as if Hungary is stopping Ukrainian money laundering. But there is just one problem: If Ukraine was laundering money in Ukraine, that money would go out of Ukraine to buy assets in the EU. But the seized money and gold was travelling from Austria to Ukraine.

In connection with these events, the Hungarian government has just submitted a draft law, which could further deepen the conflicts. Bill T/13783 uses the seizure as a pretext for retroactive legislation. It creates a loophole to probe past transactions and authorizes secret surveillance of the opposition under 'national security.' This appears to be a 'two birds with one stone' move: addressing a crime while potentially legalizing political monitoring for partisan gain.
@svelmoe Unfortunately, Slovakia’s Fico has vowed to carry on obstructing anything the EU tries to do for Ukraine, even if—especially if— Orbán loses. Maybe the EU will invoke Article 7 against Slovakia. They’ve been loathe to invoke it against Hungary for fear of meddling in their election.
Orban is another nasty piece of work, in this case he is acting as a proxy war agent for Putin, and the EU should respond as if Hungary is Russia. Actually, I'd kick Hungary out of the EU, they are a total disruption. Let them see if they like being part of Russia.
