No, a computer is just boolean logic. I'm not being reductive, that's literally all you need.
When people say that thinking is just complicated enough computation, that's an assumption. A particularly convenient assumption, given all the computers we have lying about.
A brain is several billion living nerve cells all doing their thing, acting and reacting to one another, concurrently. A computer is only ever doing one task at a time, but at a fast enough pace as to give the illusion of multi-tasking.
Emulating a whole brain (everything, not just simplified neural networks, but the actual nerve cells themselves) is currently far beyond what computers are capable of. More then that, not every natural phenomenon can be described algorithmically! It's entirely possible that consciousness is non-computable.
Yes, it's an assumption to say consciousness is non-computable. But it's also an assumption to say it is computable. Not really a phenomenon we understand.
I agree that fleshy brains are probably not the only things capable of producing consciousness. I think it's actually fairly likely that a machine could be made that reproduces it, I'm just... really skeptical that it's gonna look anything like a Turing machine. It would certainly be convenient if it did.
As to brains being made of discrete units... there's some evidence to suggest it might not be. When you put a person (or any living thing) under general anesthetics, the thing the anesthetics target is microtubules within cells. And microtubules themselves have quantum mechanical properties. They've been shown to er, "do", super-luminescence in lab experiments (I don't understand quantum).
Admittedly, that's a lot of correlation and almost no direct example of causation. But it does suggest there's... something... there that needs more examination and research.
Here's the super luminescence research paper arxiv.org/abs/2302.01469
although, this youtube.com/watch?v=xa2Kpkksf3… is the summary I actually understand
Networks of tryptophan -- an aromatic amino acid with strong fluorescent response -- are ubiquitous in biological systems, forming diverse architectures in transmembrane proteins, cytoskeletal filaments, sub-neuronal elements, photoreceptor complexes…arXiv.org

Q: So, anything new? What'd you do today?
A: Oh, dug through menus in a new AV receiver to find its MAC addresses, configured my network DHCP server to give it a static address, and then wrote some iptables rules to keep that address from being able to reach outside the LAN. Pretty standard stuff.
Looking for a "DO NOT CONNECT THIS MACHINE TO THE INTERNET NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT NAGS" warning sign to print out.

True. I tend to hang out with a lot of high functioning weirdos. We worked out that about half of us either were diagnosed with various neurodiversities, or reasonably could be. Several got diagnosed, after the caffeine point.
Unfortunately, high functioning ADHD diagnosis can be VERY hit and miss. My diagnosis was apparently fairly blatant. A friend, with very similar experiences and issues, got the opposite end of the deal. Since he could hold down a job, he obviously had no issues. A depressing chunk is down to the personal opinion of the assessor.

HAHA! I was just trying to explain this to my wife. I was like
"Okay, yes, it DOES help you get stuff done but it's kinda like casting magic...You need the right intention and materials in front of you, or else it backfires and you end up focusing super hard on the first silly, likely useless thing that grabs your attention, and forget time is still moving..."

lol that’s like the opposite of ADHD. I worked a pretty long day today and had… idk, 10 cups of coffee? I’m not gonna have trouble falling asleep in a couple hours.
Edit: this me joking about the situation. Caffeine is 100% extra stims, and I use it that way.

If it's too deep for your finger, it's too deep for qtips. Don't use qtips.
They also irritate the skin in a way that your finger doesn't.
If you have gunk that's not coming out with your finger, pippette small quantities of olive oil in, leave it there for a bit and tip it back out into some kitchen roll. Repeat once or twice a day for a week or longer if necessary.
MUCH, MUCH easier than that is DON'T compact the ear wax by using qtips in your ear.
You think you're scooping stuff out, and it feels so good, but you're compacting it on the way in and irritating the skin on the twist, promoting more ear wax. You'll think you have some hearing loss from noise, but it'll be the compacted ear wax because you didn't listen to the advice everyone gave you to not use qtips. Use your finger, but don't use qtips.

~~I have lost my job & housing. Does anyone know of a place in Georgia or Minnesota that has entry level positions for IT or any similar computer stuff? Electronics repair is something I'm interested in too.
I was unable to get any certifications from my current job so I'm stuck at entry level. They told me they would give me opportunities for certifications, but they never came, so I feel scammed & don't feel bad about leaving this company.
I need an immediate opening, just ideas about where I can look now. I would prefer something LGBT friendly, because working with stereotypical anti LGBT boomers is killing me & I'm suffering in this environment.
If I can't get something in IT I'll take anything with a gay work environment that pays enough for me to live alone.~~

A gay (or at least LGBT friendly without the fetishization of LGBT people that most corporations seem to do) is very important to me. I can't do this pretending to be straight & perfectly gender conforming shit again. I'm DYING here.
Has anyone seen glopossum's character Junip? I would rather have a coworker like him traumatize me with the details of his sexual encounters last night every morning than this "you can't be gay that's against the bible💔" shit!!! I really don't like hearing about that stuff but it does make me feel accepted & better about myself instead of forcing me to pretend to be something I'm not & do a bad job pretending & repeatedly get in trouble for seeming weird or off somehow all the time!

A thought for trans allies in this time:
You often ask us what you can do to help. Well, here's something you can do. Wear trans badges, buttons, pins, scarves, whatever you've got. Explicitly. I wanna see that blue and pink EVERYWHERE.
Because the more of you cis folk do that, the safer we will be in crowds and such. It will mean that wearing a badge of support for trans people doesn't necessarily out that person as trans.
"But wait," you're thinking maybe, "if I do that, people might think *I* am trans!"
Well, why is that a problem for you? Would you be offended by someone thinking you might be trans? Would you be scared? Welcome to our world.
This is your time, cis people. You were all ready to call yourselves allies when it didn't matter more than changing your PFP background. Now the rubber meets the road. We need you. We need your help to normalise our existence to other cis people. It could save lives.
If someone accuses you of being trans (imagine being *accused* of existing while trans?), don't deny it. Ask why it matters to them. Keep calm.

for months I've had a "Mr Skittles" air freshener hanging in my car, although its long run out I keep it there (and put another cheap air freshener behind it) as its both in trans flag colours but also "under the radar" (I'm not sure if whoever designed it knew the significance, but given they could have picked any colour it does make me wonder..)
(it is the mascot of Dodo juice, a detailing supplies company from Essex, dodo in pink/blue)

Did you intend to refer to the king of Denmark here or?
Of course it made a difference that gentile Danes were in solidarity with Jews. The death rate in that country was a lot less than other occupied countries. Most Jews escaped. Their neighbours helped them.
Honestly, arguing that saving real people's lives only mattered as far as how it impacted the feelings of Nazis is not only absurd but offensive.
