The seasons here change and alter with some confusion and strange mix. Shakespeare blames it on a feud between the King and Queen of the Fairies. I'm not so sure... there are works by the forest near Dunvegan Church and the fairies there have been relocated from the area. Maybe the upset in that fairy population has had an effect...

A small, drab, recently-discovered flycatcher. Has an olive-green back, a buff-streaked olive throat and breast, and a yellowish lower belly. Note the tawny lores and presence of two wingbars. Found in early successional forest and degraded bamboo forests, where it forages in the understory. Call is a frog-like trill.

German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen died #OTD in 1923.
On 8 November 1895, he produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range known as X-rays or Röntgen rays, an achievement that earned him the inaugural Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. The non-SI unit of radiation exposure, the roentgen (R), is also named after him.

Yet another inspired accident where the scientist encountered a phenomenon and figured it out. When he turned on a high voltage experiment, a screen on the other side of the lab glowed. Holding his hands in front of the screen he saw his own bones. That must have been spooky.
Of course nobody knew at the time that such an experiment is not healthy.

The Three Gorges Dam, located on China's Yangtze River, is the world's largest hydroelectric dam by installed capacity, generating massive amounts of power while also providing flood control and improved navigation.
Space-based solar power (SBSP) is a concept where solar energy is collected in space by satellites and then beamed down to Earth.

Yellow-breasted Brushfinch
A variable brushfinch found in montane forests and edges from Venezuela to Peru. Yellow below and dark above with mostly black face and rufous crown. Back color varies from greenish to gray to black. Some populations show small white patch on wing. Sexes similar. Despite confusing variation and taxonomic uncertainty, the combination of yellow underparts and rufous crown help identify this species. Found close to the ground at edge of forest or in shrubby areas from 1,500–3,700 m. Usually in small groups, sometimes following a mixed-species flock.

One of the pink pigeons (Nesoenas mayeri) around Ebony Forest Chamarel.
In 1991 only 10 individuals remained in the wild, thanks to an intensive species recovery programme, the population increased. It's the only Mascarenes pigeon species that has escaped extinction.
Intensive management is still needed for their survival.
Supplementary feeding, the installing of nest boxes and the control of introduced predators such as rats are a few of the undertaken measures.

Mrs. Hume's Pheasant
Dashingly plumaged, long-tailed terrestrial bird. Male has chestnut body, steely blue neck and wing patches, white wingbars, and a long black-and-white banded tail. Brownish female shorter-tailed, with black-spotted upperparts and red facial patch. Usually found singly, in pairs, or in trios in forest openings, meadows, and along rural roadsides, typically in the early morning.

Some crocuses I planted in with the white sapote tree. Tree is still blooming and setting fruit. Hopefully the fruit holds this year.
Casimiroa edulis, white sapote “Suebelle” - as a mature tree it can flower/fruit different times of the year. Pest resistant. Has similar nutritional requirements as citrus. Not a water hog. Keep above 27F.

White sapote is generally a winter flowering tree. The flowers are small and humble and only faintly fragrant so I planted more showy flowers to attract pollinators to them.
So far I’ve seen sweat bees and other small insects at the flowers.

It’s #SuperbOwl time again. This is a Eurasian eagle owl, the same species as New York's celebrated Flaco. This bird was in the care of the Parks Service, and was shown off at their annual Raptor Fest.

Tawny owl.
Owls seem popular tonight.. #SuperbOwl
This is a juvenile tawny owl I met a few years ago. They'd only just left the nest with their two siblings. Tawny owls do something called branching when they first leave the nest, rather than fully fledging they explore an area close to the nest while being fully looked after by mum and dad.

Humans aren't the only ones who enjoy a spot of tea now and again. Little monsters have been know to slip quietly into kitchens when no one is around and sneak a sip of two of freshly brewed sweetness.
