Saffron-headed Parrot

Unmistakable medium-sized parrot found from eastern Panama into Colombia and Venezuela. Green body with a bright yellow head and white eyering. Also note yellow shoulder and blue flight feathers. In flight, look for red underwing coverts and short square tail. Uncommon in forests and edge, mainly in the lowlands and foothills, up to around 1,600 m.

Mary Douglas Leakey was born #OTD in 1913.

She discovered the 1st fossilised Proconsul skull, an extinct ape which is now believed to be ancestral to humans. She discovered the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. She developed a system for classifying the stone tools found at Olduvai. She discovered the Laetoli footprints, and at the Laetoli site she discovered hominin fossils that were more than 3.75 million years old.

Sonnet 047 - XLVII
Betwixt mine eye and heart a league is took,
And each doth good turns now unto the other:
When that mine eye is famish'd for a look,
Or heart in love with sighs himself doth smother,
With my love's picture then my eye doth feast,
And to the painted banquet bids my heart;
Another time mine eye is my heart's guest,
And in his thoughts of love doth share a part:
So, either by thy picture or my love,
Thy self away, art present still with me;
For thou not farther than my thoughts canst move,
And I am still with them, and they with thee;
Or, if they sleep, thy picture in my sight
Awakes my heart, to heart's and eyes' delight.

Good to hear that things are going well with the new design. I’m hoping that the Mac interface with the new framework will be improved in terms of navigation. It tended to be a little bit tough to navigate easily, but I guess part of that could be to do with the Mac layout as well. Anyway, looking forward to testing the new versions as they are produced.

Bugun Liocichla

Small laughingthrush-like bird with a tiny range in far northeastern India. Look for a neat black cap, glowing yellow-orange broken “eyebrow,” and yellow-tinged wings. Appears to favor dense forest edge and degraded forest at 2060-2340 meters. Clambers about in lower levels of forest, typically in pairs or small groups, occasionally with otherwise uniform flocks of other species. Song is a series of mellow descending whistles, often with a slight rise at the end.

Coppery-tailed Coucal

Huge coucal with a hefty bill. The head and tail usually look black, but can show a coppery or purplish sheen in certain light. Found in thick wetlands, especially papyrus. Fairly skulking, though occasionally seen in the open. Massive size is obvious in flight. The call is a slow, deep version of the typical coucal descending and accelerating series of “boop” notes. Very similar to Blue-headed Coucal, but there is virtually no overlap in range, and Coppery-tailed is larger, without a blue sheen to the head. Burchell’s and Senegal Coucals have a similar pattern, but are much smaller.

You might have noticed that some accounts on here have posts much longer than 500 characters. If you're wondering how this is possible, find out in this guide:

➡️ fedi.tips/why-do-some-people-o…

TL;DR - You need to be on a server that allows larger post sizes, either running a modified version of Mastodon or a totally different kind of Fediverse server.

You can browse some well-run servers with larger post sizes in the "larger post size" section of fedi.garden:

but at the moment GTS is mainly aimed at self-hosting people. It isn't easy to sign up on for others.

It's aimed at smaller instances for you and a few friends, sure. Maybe 50 users or less, though I'm sure it would scale to a bit more than that without issue.

But there's a regular signup page for it, which forces manual review, and no more than 20 unapproved signups can be in the queue at once.... so in the case of a Mastodon where thousands of people can just flood onto your server overnight, that's not really possible with GTS....by design.

Perhaps what you mean is that with the requirement for installing another client and not providing a front-end by default, that makes it harder to use?

in reply to D. Olifant Still Won't Shut Up

@crossgolf_rebel @oli

"Perhaps what you mean is that with the requirement for installing another client"

I don't mean that, it's fine if an instance works through apps as that's what most people use anyway.

I just mean there's no equivalent of JoinMastodon.org or JoinBookWyrm.com etc where ordinary people can go and find a GTS server. There isn't any obvious onboarding?

I would absolutely *LOVE* to list GTS on fedi.garden but cannot find public instances to feature?

in reply to Fedi.Tips

@crossgolf_rebel @oli

p.s. This is not a criticism of GTS, I love the way they are doing things. It's incredibly mature that they are taking their time to get things right before recommending people use it.

They deliberately stayed in alpha for a long time to make sure they had certain features in place, and specifically told people not to use it until they were ready for beta.

If they have a long term plan for onboarding then that's great, and it's totally fine if it takes a while.

in reply to D. Olifant Still Won't Shut Up

I am deliberately not promoting flagship instances on fedi.garden (there's a maximum size limit after which instances are delisted).

But it seems like GTS currently doesn't have any public instances at all? GTS instances are all ones where you have to already know the person who runs it? If someone doesn't know anyone who self-hosts, they're sort of shut out of using GTS?

(Again, not a criticism, but this is why GTS is difficult to promote to new non-tech people.)

So technically I have 3 public "island network" GTS instances that anyone can sign up for, to join the Island One network.

Canyon Towhee

Large, stocky, long-tailed sparrow. Uniform matte brown body, with buffy throat and orange undertail coverts. Also note reddish-brown crown and messy dark streaks on upper breast (usually with a dark central spot). Occurs in deserts and dry grasslands with scattered dense shrubs. Forages primarily for seeds by running and hopping on the ground. Visits feeders. Essentially no range overlap with the very similar California Towhee; also note Canyon has reddish crown and lacks rusty tones on face.
