Royal Sunangel

Impressive hummingbird found in stunted cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes in southeastern Ecuador and northern Peru. Adult male is entirely dark blue and has a moderately long tail. Immature male has some green mixed into the blue plumage, and may have a buffy collar. Female is mostly green with a buffy or whitish collar, belly, and throat. Her tail is blue and shorter than male’s. This species is very localized, and prefers shorter forest and scrub near ridgelines.

Elymus canadensis, wild rye

The seeds I sowed in the fall have already sprouted. It’s probably ok. It’s a very tall native grass that has landscaping potential and can grow in a wide range of environments/soils. Seeds and roots are edible.

Seed heads need to be singed to remove plant fibers. Roots are cleaned, dried and ground to use as a flour. 🌱

The Brachyteles arachnoides or Southern Muriqui, also referred to as the Mono Carvoeiro or Charcoal Monkey, lives in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. These eye-catching monkeys were first described by French naturalist, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire back in 1806. They are one of the world's smallest woolly spider monkeys, reaching lengths of 45.7 to 77.4 centimeters or 18 to 30.5 inches, and weigh 18 to 33 pounds.

The roofless, gothic ruin of Coventry Cathedral - built in the 14th and 15th centuries - has been left to stand as a testament to the destructiveness of war. It fell victim to Luftwaffe raids involving 500 planes, which had the aim of flattening a civilian city. The attack became a blueprint for future air raids, including those by the RAF against German cities, such as Hamburg. After the War, the decision was made to keep the cathedral ruins as an open-air memorial park and a new, modernist cathedral was built alongside. The ruins contain a sculpture called 'Reconciliation' and the new cathedral has a 'peace bell' from Germany. #churches #gothic #war #peace #psychogeography #conflict #history
in reply to David Castleton (Author)

Benjamin Britten composed his monumental "War Requiem" for the (re-)dedication of Coventry Cathedral. It calls for large orchestra, chamber orchestra, large choir, boys' choir, organ, and three soloists. Britten's original plan was to have the soloists be Peter Pears representing Britain, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau representing Germany, and Galina Vishnevskaya representing the USSR, but the Soviet authorities did not allow Vishnevskaya to travel to Coventry for the event, so another soprano, Heather Harper, stepped in.

The War Requiem blends and contrasts the traditional Latin requiem mass with the anti-war poetry of Wilfred Owen. The chorus exclusively sings the Latin text, while the tenor and baritone soloists sing the Owen texts.

I have had the privilege of singing in the chorus for two performances of this piece, in Duke University chapel. It was one of the musical highlights of my entire life.

Tooth-billed Wren

Slender, inconspicuous wren with a long tail, recalling a gnatcatcher. Has rather dull plumage: gray above, very pale grayish below, with a brownish crown. Note the dark bars on the tail. Forages high in the canopy of humid forests and almost invariably accompanies mixed-species flocks. Sings a loud series of “tsee” notes repeated continually.

#WonderOfNature: Attacus atlas, the #Atlas #Moth, is a large saturniid moth endemic to the forests of Asia. It is one of the largest lepidopterans, with a wingspan measuring up to 24 cm.

Both forewings have a prominent extension at the tip, with markings that resemble the head of a snake, a resemblance which is exaggerated by movements of the wings when the moth is confronted by potential predators.
