American physicist and chemist Katharine Burr Blodgett was born #OTD in 1898.

She was the inventor of a technique for making non-reflecting "invisible" glass, a material used in virtually all camera lenses & many other optical devices. She was also responsible for developing an instrument that can measure film thicknesses to within a few angstroms. She did research on methods of removing ice from airplane wings. She is also credited with the development of a new type of smoke screen.

Andean Swift

Attractively patterned black-and-white swift of the Andes and adjacent Pacific lowlands. Ranges widely as singles and loose flocks, sometimes feeding low with swallows, but more often higher overhead when it can be located by its distinctive, rapid-paced buzzy chatters. Plumage is distinctive: black cap, white underparts (with black belly band in west slope populations), and a white rump. Flight faster than swallows with stiff wingbeats. Like all swifts, only perches at remote nest sites and roosts.

Those who know me know I am a serious fan of Ivor Novello and the vocal style of his time. They also know that I am studying from the book You Can Sing by Clara Novello Davies (Ivor's mother). One of Madam Clara's most famous students was Louis Graveure, who made at least forty recordings between 1915 and 1930. I literally just learned, a few minutes ago, that he himself taught singing! He died in 1965 and taught until his death. This raises an intriguing question. Are any of his students still alive? Finding one would give me a direct connection to him and also to Madam Clara's own methodology! And obviously, if anyone who knew Ivor is still alive, I would like to find him as well, but sadly, I doubt it, as he died in 1951.

So interestingly enough, I'm in talks with a US based independent home roaster gear seller, RoastMasters, about them writing a monthly column on CoffeeGeek, and also informing our readers more about home roasters in general.

My own area of expertise doesn't extend deep into home roasting. I do have a Quest M3, and know how to use it well, through experience, but I have very little experience with other types of roasters designed for home use.

@LJ I’ve got a bit of a snit with Roastmasters. They messed up an order of 5 pounds of a rather rare origin, green coffee I was excited about. Charged me and said it shipped. By the time I realized they actually hadn't shipped it, it was gone. They did give me a refund at least but basically they were “yeah sucks to be you. There was a lot of trouble around that time” (sounded like a bad employee).

@LJ As for your Quest, get a variac and a way to measure the voltage. If you can keep voltage at 120 while roasting, you’ll have much more energy available, better roasts. As you probably know, electric roasters are rather iffy in regards to having enough energy — the cool kids use gas. I use a variac — game changer.

Chinese variacs are about $60 on EBay and will last a little while. American made ones are much much more expensive. #coffee

Contemporary reviews are largely positive, describing it as "of the highest class" and "first-rate"; However, it is also accused of being "vile outpourings of a lewd woman's mind" and circulating libraries refuse to stock it or will supply it only under the counter.

Kai Monarch

A distinctive, heavy-billed black-and-white flycatcher-like songbird from the Kai Islands. Adult entirely black except for white lower chest and belly and white outer tail feathers. Juvenile gray-brown above and buffy below. Singles and pairs inhabit mangrove, forest, forest edge, and woodland in lowlands and low hills. Joins mixed-species flocks. Unmistakable in its limited range. Song is a single disyllabic whistle, “see-ooo,” descending in the latter half. Calls include a rasping, scolding “grrr-grrr-grrr…” and a weak, wavering chatter.

Normally, my range of interest in musical plays of all sorts begins in the ninetteenth century and ends in the 1950's or very early 1960's at the most, but there are a few exceptions. I have always wanted to see Man of La Mancha, after reading some of Don Quixote at university. Little did I know that none other than Olive Gilbert made a small appearance as the housekeeper in the live performance of the play. I learned this while researching her roles other than those with Ivor Novello. So naturally, this made me want to see it more. But I was expecting to find just the film. I had no idea I would actually find it with the original London cast and dialogue! Yet here it is! This is going to be fun!

Burchell's Coucal

A large, robust, ungainly cuckoo with rufous wings and a long, broad tail. Shows a solid dark cap and back of the head, and white underparts. Unlike other coucals, shows an obviously barred rump and upper tail coverts. It often moves clumsily, preferring to clamber about in rank vegetation or walk on the ground foraging for insects or small vertebrates. Its flight is labored and heavy. This species uses a wide variety of habitats with a thick understory, including savanna, woodland, forest edge, and wetlands. The song is a deep descending bubbling series, “bu-bu-bu bu bu bu bu”, that falls and then rises in pitch.

One of America's most intriguing museums is the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Created between 1913 and 1916 by Henry Mercer - a young lawyer turned archaeologist and collector - the seven-storey structure, with its gothic towers and turrets, was constructed purely out of poured concrete. Mercer had help from eight labourers and a horse called Lucy. Inside - with its winding staircases and multi-level galleries - it resembles an M.C. Esher drawing. Much of the collection is dedicated to lost American crafts, with stagecoaches, boats and giant sawmills on display. More outlandish exhibits include a vampire-slaying kit - complete with silver bullets, a wooden stake and ivory crucifix - and an authentic gallows, with its trapdoor open. #gothic #museums #weird #history #folklore #architecture #Americana

Saw these springtails sheltering under a mushroom. By chance I noticed that they seem to be infected with a fungus as well. Each has a few threads emerging from it- on their backs, heads, and antennae.

I was shown some pics of springtails infected with a different sort of fungus (inaturalist.org/observations/2…)

Also, these springtails were still alive and moving (a bit, slowly). Maybe it's just a funky springtail hairdo?
