The Sheela-na-gig is a graphic female image found in some churches and cathedrals. Some claim the Sheela is a remnant of pagan goddess worship or a fertility symbol; others that she is a Christian warning against the sin of lust. Another theory is that Sheela-na-gigs were protective carvings, designed to scare demons away. Sheelas are especially common in Norman churches, suggesting the image may have been brought to Britain and Ireland from mainland Europe. #churches #gothic #folklore #history #mythology #architecture #weird

I actually have your book already, I didn't realise that till you replied there. I bought it to trying and research a weird little gargoyle figurine I couldn't name, but I think I've decided it's Koschei the Deathless, but you got a sale anyway 😀

Ever since we introduced Beau to the cat-related YouTube channels on the smart TV, he regularly jumps up in my lap when I'm on the computer, peers intently at the screen for a few seconds, then hops away, to make sure I'm not secretly watching birds without him.

I feel like there's a trust issue here that we need to resolve.

Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher

A bold little flycatcher of mid- to high-altitude forests with a flashing black-and-white tail. Male is brown above with a black face, white eyebrow, and orange throat patch (gorget). The female is essentially a faded version of the male with a dark gray face and a pale, largely unnoticeable gorget. Usually perches at middle levels, sallying from its perch to catch flying insects. Often joins mixed-species feeding flocks.

"A colony of beavers has saved the Czech government almost $2 million after completing a stalled dam project themselves.
Despite a seven-year planning process and successfully securing the funding, the Czech Republic’s plans to build a new dam in the Brdy mountain region came to a standstill as authorities struggled to acquire building permits.
However, it was the arrival of eight hard-working beavers that finally got the job done."

Sonnet 043 - XLIII
When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see,
For all the day they view things unrespected;
But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee,
And darkly bright, are bright in dark directed.
Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright,
How would thy shadow's form form happy show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made
By looking on thee in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!
All days are nights to see till I see thee,
And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.

What i do not like with such types of analysis is that they do not compare one technology with alternatives. If you take the life-time energy balance, recyclability, accumulative polution during exploitation, maintenance, etc. one could easily calculate that PVs are at least 70% better than coal plants.

BTW, the same is true about the EV vs. inner combustion vehicles discussion.

in reply to Georg Tuparev

@tuparev
there is already some comparison of technologies - for example solar energy works relatively well (about as well as atomic energy), but it is still good to remember that with the best efforts even solar energy has some negative externalities, so it is necessary to use it sensibly and resource-efficiently - I would personally take this as a conclusion

Black-chested Fruiteater

Scarce fruiteater found in cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes in Ecuador, southern Colombia, and northern Peru. Male has a solid black hood that is not bordered by yellow on the neck. Female is mostly green with yellow streaking on her belly. Yellow eyes and dark legs are also useful features in both sexes to separate them from similar species. Feeds on berries at middle to upper levels in the forest. Gives very high-pitched whistles, some very short and others long and drawn out.

I love my little indoor garden. In my isolated life, my plants are my only tactile contact with other living things; they're good for my spirits and mental health.

However, I'm not producing food in meaningful quantities. It's a joy-giving hobby, nothing more.

If anyone has successful set up indoor gardens to produce significant amounts of food, I would love to hear about what you're doing. My stress would be lower with a bit more food independence.

The Boselaphus tragocamelus or Nilgai, which literally translates to “Blue Cow,” is endemic to the Indian Subcontinent in places like Bangladesh, the Himalayas, India, Nepal, and Pakistan. These unique animals were described by Prussian botanist, ethnographer, explorer, geographer, geologist, natural historian, taxonomist, and zoologist, Peter Simon Pallas in 1766. They are the largest antelopes in Asia, at lengths of 5.6 to 6.9ft, stand 3.3 to 4.9ft at the shoulder, and weigh 220 to 679 pounds.
