@Miigrateur
@LaQuadrature
Chaque demandeur de carte d'identité peut désormais demander à ce que ses empreintes digitales ne soient pas versées au fichier TES.Grégoire Martinez (europe1.fr)
@Miigrateur

Given the current temperature in Glasgow, I figured it's worth posting this plaque I came across on Westbank Quadrant about the origins of Lord Kelvin's ground-breaking research into absolute zero while he was a professor at Glasgow University. None of it is remotely true, but it's an amusing tale nonetheless, and with the current cold snap, it feels quite plausible!

I use RSS with fluent-reader
I use email with #deltachat

You just have to ignore the commercial Social Media and advertising with f.e. uBlock, then you'll see it 🙂
Usenet news groups stayed on topic!
They were organized by topic.
I keep wondering why we abandoned that idea.
😿
...
(Well yes, it's still there and one can still use it. But so much of it has been taken over by robots pushing spam. 😢 )
@jamesb192
As a moderator I always said,
"If you can explain how that helps a person do 'refactoring - improving the structure of code without changing its function' then I'll allow it, ruling it 'on-topic' for this group. Otherwise, you're 'off-topic.' And banned."
And well, …
It was *always* the banned thing. 🙄
is it really the old web? What's the new Web then?
I'd argue that the same proponents that label these technologies old, are the same ones trying to break the Web and other open standards. RSS, Email, blogs and other internet technologies are still the current open internet. We never had successors to them.
Yes, this! This is why I stopped writing on Medium and started focusing on my own blog, on my own domain. Email is also my preferred way of communication. Email, however, could probably benefit from a more modernised protocol.
I can't confirm this, but I do get a sense people are "moving back" to their own spaces on the web. Perhaps I'm wrong. But I actually much rather read and follow your blog on your domain than follow you on a big platform.

no tracking on RSS? You wish!
Aside from obvious tracking pixels there are somewhat smart ways: When hitting the subscribe URL do a 301 "Moved Permanently" redirect to a feed URL containing a custom ID, a "good" feed reader will then store that URL and then all links and media references can contain the ID to track. This won't track when exactly you read the feed content, but will track when embedded d images are loaded (smart people block that) or click on a link (to full article?)
Maybe I'm a dreamer, but I wonder — when will we see a new kind of Internet?
One where the citizens control the servers, free from GAFAM and global powers, built to ensure open sharing for society and our democracies — even if it's imperfect.

I first came on Internet in my youth when, in France, the famous Skyblogs were declining and seen as "has been".
For years, I thought it was not worth having a blog: what could I say on there to keep readers engaged?
Well, when I finally set up my blog, I decided I wouldn't care about readers' engagement. Heck, I don't even have analytics (well I do, but I have to skim through Nginx's logs). I write what I feel like writing about, when I feel like writing.
Truly liberating.
IMHO it was perfect 😀
and it is still - I still mostly use RSS and email 😀

Here is the original #clay. We found it in a construction site in Venice, just south of us. They were digging a retention pond beside a new road. The construction is now complete and the pond is filled with water, but for a moment the site was kind of like a playground for fossil hunters and clay diggers.
I've had a pretty difficult time working with this clay and incorporating it into my work, so I'm glad it could successfully serve another purpose. #wildclay #Florida

@SeaFury the font is technically only slightly different but somehow the original reads as much more wild.
I think it's in the difference between the slender and wide parts of the letters, in the old one it's more dramatic.
@SeaFury the only use I can see a full stop having in a slogan is to add or change meaning.
A graphic designer doesn't get artistic license to add/change meaning of historical political slogans.
@SeaFury on closer inspection I suspect you're right, the full stop wasn't added by a graphic designer, it was by a copyright lawyer.
Just a wild guess: I reckon they couldn't get the exclusivity rights over it without the full stop.

Thank you.
I dearly wish this wasn't noteworthy, but it is, so you get kudos for it.
the PSF should stick to Python and software and value people solely on merit and our shared humanity. They should NOT discriminate against *anyone* based on gender, sexuality or race/ethnicity. DEI programs unfortunately often seem to do that.
MLK made clear in his "I Have A Dream" speech he wanted his kids to grow up in a world where they were judged by the content of their character not by the color of their skin. He literally said that and we should take him at his word. I do. So should you. But regardless of whether you agree with MLK or not the PSF should stay *out* of gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity/color and stay out of politics. Stick to Python. This should be obvious, I think.
Thankfully I've moved on from the Python community. Too much immature self-inflicted drama. Software *engineering*, folks -- focus on that.
@synlogic4242 Community health, and therefore things that some would call politics, is an inseperable part of open source. You're asking the PSF to "stay out of" these things, when that is exactly what opens the doors to bigotry and discrimination. In fact, this "should avoid politics" argument is often used exactly by bigots, with the hope that they'll be allowed to be bigoted in more communities.
This has become so crystal clear to me that, in the absence of very strong anti-discrimination rules, i mentally translate "no politics" policies to actually mean "queerphobes and racists welcome".
I can't know whether you are aware of this, but i hope this was ignorance, not malice.
Not talking about politics is extremely political. Not caring about oppression and discrimination is extremely political. It's high time the technical people leave their bubble and take a look at the real world, beyond their little individuality

"discriminatory equity ideology"
George Orwell, your time has come!
@jay You think the right answer to receiving money on the condition of being fascist to to pretend to be fascist? That is.... Painfully short sighted. It would drive away contributors and make the terms and conditions seem acceptable to organisations. Plus the foundation would eventually lose the money anyway due to the clawback clause. Better that everyone turn down the money and show themselves to be better people.
There are more important things than money.
It would be great if you can provide an additional donation option for European people (or even better a European association or via an European Association, such as alasca.cloud/en/). Europe has a very efficient high-speed (less than 10 seconds you have it) bank transfer system (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_E…) at much lower costs than credit cards/paypal.
With a European entity you could also apply to @sovtechfund for grants without sacrifying your values.
"promote DEI, or discriminatory equity ideology"
That is some "creative" re-framing they got going on there...
The clawback clause is *nuclear* too. Not only would they lose 1.5million they already spent if they did the "take the money and do it anyway" plan, they could actually lose the money they got from every OTHER government grant they ever took before signing that thing.
You don't play stupid games with the US government, even this one. They can make sure you win VERY stupid prizes.
Glyph reshared this.
Doing the right thing you “lost out on this large funding source.” But know that people doing the right thing never lose anything. For them it is a win-win because it is the right thing to do especially because it is the right time to do the right thing!
The upside is that we as part of the PSF community, we appreciate your bravery and will support you however we can!
@jay They're not giving up, they're sticking to their governing principles.
Taking your approach is dishonest and breaks trust with their community.
Also, I'm guessing you're not familiar with legal matters. If the organization was found to be intentionally breaking contract, they'd not only need to pay back the money, they'd also have legal fees and possible penalties, and interest to pay back too. They'd be further behind financially than they are now.
My company is pretty much built on #Python.
We just made a significant donation to the PSF in recognition to their great work on the language, of which a small but important part is their commitment to fairness (or "DEI" as USians call it).

@Nentuaby @distrowatch @jay
There also exists the likelihood that the US government in its present state would make up a reason to trigger that clawback clause -- and it doesn't have to be a good one. The $1.5m offered is tied to a leash and collar, and that collar is rather noose-shaped.
Even setting aside the Python Foundation's commitment to what these clowns call 'DEI' and the rest of us call 'human fucking rights', from an organizational perspective, it's better not to give any political organization, but particularly the current US federal government, the ability to simply wipe the group off the map at a whim.
thanks.
more power to you all.
Donated.
I'd be inclined to interpret this provision as saying that you can't run any DEI programmes that break the law and then insist that your programs don't break the law, but with that clawback provision it's just not safe. You could even have them review and OK your programmes, but you could never trust them not to blackmail you later.
It requires the intake of a significant amount of drugs to understand, how promoting diversity, equity and inclusion is violating an anti-discrimination law for being considered some discriminatory equity ideology.
Understanding #fascist and #populist rhetoric requires oneself to ignore the established meaning of words making communication useless and solely focus on the sounds they make. It's like apes grunting at each other.

This is a valuable lesson for any manufacturer: never awaken the nerd sleeping inside your customer, because his wrath shall be terrible.
In this case the warning was quite literal.
The company annoyed a buyer enough to push him into full blown nerd mode. He tore the product apart, reverse engineered every part, and then published a step by step guide showing exactly how to disable "kill switch" that prevented the use of the product without the vendor spying on the user.
What started as a minor grievance became a public, technical exposé that left the maker exposed and embarrassed.
Moral of the story: underestimate your users at your own peril.

@briankrebs My vacuum cleaner is very dumb, but it still works. It was built around 1960, and I inherited it from my grandmother.
An Electrolux, if you want to know.
@c_merriweather @briankrebs Mine is dumb too. A Hoover PAWS Wind tunnel purchased in 2008.
My parents gave us their off-brand Roomba thingy from 2018ish. No camera, and we can't get it to work right. It just goes back and forth in a weird diamond pattern and won't do anything else. 😆
@courtcan @briankrebs I am surprised that someone has not some has not put an RC controller on a "roomba" so it can be operated with a joystick.
Just sittin' there on the Lay-z-Boy, feet up, directing the vacuum cleaner around the room.

@briankrebs My smart home is isolated from the Internet and when I test new devices the "Who do they talk to" is an important part of the evaluation.
But alas, the days have become dark and difficult. Everything wants to talk to the world.

Smart home tech (or any) shouldn’t require manufacturer apps, internet connection or accounts to work. If a product mandates anything like that, that’s just a hidden fee, paid with data. There are enough products using industry standards that work offline, across apps and hubs (if needed).

I'm starting to play with HomeAssistant and smart devices that don't call home aren't that easy to find.
Try devices that use either Zigbee or Matter over Thread. They will work offline, are interoperable between manufacturers and work with HomeAssistant.
Some might require an app and internet for firmware updates, but those are optional. No need to use them or even keep them installed in daily use.
Popular brands include IKEA Tradfri, Philips Hue, Eve Home, Sonoff, Aqara or Xiaomi, but there are a myriad of companies in this field.
"I'm sorry Martin, that brand of bread is not authorised in this toaster. Would you like to upgrade your bread subscription details?"
And if you liked that, then you really should read Cory Doctorow's compilation called _Radicalized_. Four short-ish stories, and the very first one is called "Unauthorised Bread". And the third one is kind of predicting Luigi Mangioni, but on steroids.
Have a nice evening!
why use slop for illustration on a technical article?
Also I'm pretty sure this whole article is also slop.
It is an absolute slop fest. Horribly obvious ChatGPT writing including the classic "This isn't X; it's Y" all over the place and a claim that ADB was open... on a Linux based device?
It's a shame too because it's a genuinely interesting situation, but the AI slop writing is horrible to get through and makes the story look much more involved and long than it actually is.

@luupies @lies_das Laughably naive. Inform yourself about the work of DOGE, Palantir and ICE and the purchases of data by the US govt which is doing exactly what you accuse the Chinese govt of doing.
The US has, of course, a history of overthrowing democratically elected governments it doesn't like as well as a long history of assassinating people and committing war crimes. See eg, the book Dirty Wars by Jeremy Scahill. Micah Lee's Defcon 33 talk on YouTube about bombing Yemen etc etc
When we were looking at vacuum robots I said I didn't want anything that needed to connect to WiFi to do its job because I remembered the babymonitors that used WiFi and griefers had "hacked" to terrify toddlers. So we got an Ecovacs Deebot and it'll go around in a frustratingly random way and not "see" things just next to it, but it gets the job done.

@nazokiyoubinbou @lbnvds I think the image at the top is most likely AI generated. AI may have been used to work on the text, but it doesn’t seem prompt generated.
I think the story behind it is true and that is the most important point in my book.

there's sooo much nope in that article, holy fucking shit, to run the entirety of Google Cartographer on a full Linux machine, sending all of that back, receiving remote kill commands when the telemetry stops, this is all beyond insane
And I also see a lot of opportunity for lawyers to step in, because if that's running a full linux distro, people are entitled to the sourcecode for one. And the entire telemetry crap seems like something a GDPR lawyer would have an absolute field day with

On the unmodified device, if the kill switch requires a remote command to be sent, blocking ALL networking (no open wifi and not giving in the passphrase) should block the command from being received. This won't work if a timeout on communications with the robot's true master is also included.
I would expect most users who block networking to block ALL of it, especially given the long history of updates that are downgrades (such as new DRM antifeatures and lockouts) in commercial devices of all types.
ANY device you cut off from the vendor needs to be cut all the way off including firmware updates. Hard for a 3ed party to exploit an offline device, so should be safe to stay with a "known good snapshot" firmware.

🤩 Beautiful work!
Forgive me, but I've been replaying the Myst game series and these look very "Rivenese" to me at the moment! I'm sure they referenced the same cultural motifs when they were doing art for the game.
Anyway, I love the form of that tea pot and the patterns and colors here are fantastic.
Those pieces are wonderful! Just looking at them makes me feel calm and happy. My fingers are imagining the textures.
I will check out your website.
I notice that the website said that you have a solar powered studio. How much power do you need to do that? (I imagine an electric kiln can draw a fair amount of power.)
I've recently discovered the Japanese practice of Kintsugi ('golden repair') and am saving up to be able to preserve a vase beloved by my late mother.
I love your designs, colour choices, and clean decorative lines by the way!
I can understand why you are selling-out, your work is really nice.
I noted that tea pot - the handle made me think of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. I particularly liked that "earth tone vase". I've spent some time over the last couple of years in the hills west of Sedona, Arizona, so those colors look familiar.
I look forward to what you create next. I may buy some.
As a kid I tried ceramics - but I wasn't any good. More recently I put my hand to a fireplace using arts-and-crafts tiles. Here's a link to a photo...

When Alice Gooblar-Perovic, Aahana Gupta, and Lydia Cruce were freshmen at Iowa City West High School, they learned that thousands of books, including "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Nineteen Minutes," were going to be pulled from classrooms across their state. This was in order to comply with Senate File 496, which said books and school materials must be "age appropriate." So they started a Banned Book Club. Two years later, the club is still going and growing, and the law is in trouble — the part of it that affected school libraries was temporarily blocked by a federal judge, while enforcement of book restrictions remains frozen under a second temporary injunction. @npr's Iowa Public Radio spoke with the three girls, who are now juniors, about how their goals have changed, and the community they've built.

Last pot of the year! I made a second version of the terracotta amaryllis vase at the request of a neighbor. He and his wife are also craftspeople—she makes #pottery and he fashions highly polished wood lids to fit her vessels. This will be her Christmas gift. I offered to deliver it to their home so that I can peek inside their studio.
Since this is the second iteration of this design, I tweaked a couple of details. Iteration is so how potters make progress. Can you spot the differences?

Still warm from the kiln, covered in warm earth tones—I’m so relieved this piece came out successfully on the other side of firing. I worked on it over the course of a month and remembered to document moments of process which I think I’ll share in a thread.
The most important thing to know is that I consider this pot a collaboration. I coordinated the colors, but I didn’t choose them. Each clay tone was a surprise and a gift, and that’s where my excitement about this piece lies. #pottery

This is fantastic! Thanks for sharing,
I think I love the extra detail of the dots/bumps and the lovely orange textures.
This is what it looked like before it was fired. At this point, I’d let it dry completely (we call that bone dry) and then I painted it with dirt water (we call that terra sig.) I love this soft, pastel stage and I also love the color shifting alchemy that happens in a hot kiln. The yellow to dark purple is especially wild.
After this I bisque fire, then apply glaze, then fire again. I work in batches so I was making other pots while I made this. #pottery #clay #ceramics #WIP #artprocess

That's beautiful, and an amazing accomplishment. My mother was a potter for 50+ years and I know firsthand the difficulty in bringing large pieces intact through the firings.
It looks so great, congratulations!

as much as I was joking about this, there's an important point to be made about human exceptionalism, and our generalisations about other species.
Chimpanzees are known to hoard resources, particularly if they are of a higher social rank. Scientists *have* studied this, and have made the obvious comparison to human social behaviour. The question, surely, is not so much 'what is wrong with this...chimpanzee/human', but how might we build social structures that constrain the negative effects of this innate behaviour.

Sensitive content
@Geri @christineburns Mine does, but he's from a teeny tiny party with only 72 MPs so nobody cares.
Makes it hard to be really sarcastic when your MP appears to be very good at their job - engaging with constituents without much recourse to party press releases. Wouldn't be surprised if my last MP was on a commission based on the number of answers in the form of a CCHQ press release sent out.
@spanghero @Geri @christineburns And more broadly, the British mainstream media is an utter sewer. Even the Grauniad is just less stinky than the other waste streams.
Fairness is barely a factor in the UK media so its absence in this case should be no surprise.
It's also worth remembering that the #LibDems made a strategic choice to campaign locally rather than nationally. Even a fair news media would struggle to give national coverage to local issue campaigns.
Sensitive content
@Geri @spanghero @christineburns The UK #LibDems have hidtorically been very good on trans rights, much better than Lab/Con. When I ran the parliamentary lobbying for PFC in the run-up to the GRA2004, several excellent LibDems worked very hard and v effectively.
Now they are still supportive, but less vocally. And they haven't purged their #TERFs 🙁
@Geri @Pamela1960 @spanghero @christineburns No, they didn't.
The #LibDems sold their soul for a chance to have to have a referendum on tte #AlternativeVote system (#AV), which is not a form of #ProportionalRepresentation. In some ways #AV is even worse than the wicked #FPTP.
The #LIbDems soid their souls for a taste of power. The #neoliberal leader was delighted to be in bed with the #ConservativeParty
Did they? Or would the Tories have pushed it through anyway? Same with tuition fees they still get the blame for.
I would say that with LD, the cabinet Cameron was a bit more centered then it would have been with only Tories.
Part of the issue is that people in the UK in general don't know how coalition governments work. In a coalition, manifestos go out the window, the only thing that could is the coalition agreement.
@Pamela1960 @wanwizard @Geri @spanghero @christineburns In #Ireland, we haven't had a single-party govt since 1989. Govt formation is a big deal.
Coalition agreements start with things all sides agree on. But they go much further. On some issues there are compromises. Other issues are traded: we do your policy that I don't like if you agree that we do my policy that you don't like.
So e.g. the 2020–24 FF/FG/Green govt did some big #climatechange stuff in return for #neoliberal economics.
What did I write that contradicted with what you wrote and I replied to?
A coalition manifesto (the negotiation result) never matches a party manifesto for 100%, and usually the more extreme policies in a party manifesto are the first to go, as they are never acceptable to the other party/parties.
@wanwizard @Pamela1960 @Geri @spanghero @christineburns I long ago lost patience with apologists for the #ConDem government. This comment doesn't restore my patience.
The #LibDems had to choose which manifesto commitments wee red lines, and which were negotiable. Tuition fees was more than the manifesto; it was a solemn pledge. They could and should have made it a red line.
But instead they caved in. The Tories couldn't do it without support from LibDens, unless Labour abstained. #Scum
@Pamela1960 @Geri @spanghero @christineburns You are entitled to your opinion. I tend to agree with you, but forming a coalition government is always bartering, and the options were limited, as Labour refused to go into a coalition (which would have been a better option).
I can't comment on it, as I don't know the negotiation details, and don't know which Tory policies were scrapped in return (if any).

@JimmyB @Pamela1960 @spanghero @christineburns yes, I am inclined to agree xx
I do think David Cameron opened a big Pandora's Box of Nationalism....
That blind guy is under arrest?
In America he'd be on the ground with a boot and/or knee in his neck, bleeding from the face and head as he's zip tied to his cane and then dragged off and literally thrown into the back of a van.
I'm absolutely shocked and the politeness of your police as they enforce this horrendous law you have.
