Rather than trying to keep teens off mostly harmless social media like TikTik and Facebook for fear they will run across bad content, the government needs to ban Nazi sites like X altogether. Existing hate speech laws would suffice once we get past the idea that Musk isn't a publisher. #auspol
in reply to John Quiggin

this might sound crazy but hear me out. Rather than embark on a ham fisted legislative and technological challenge we could start by getting the government to stop actively promoting it on every page of the public broadcasters website, and hopefully the entire profession of journalism might then at least pay lip service to the idea of self regulation by being principled about where they donate original content.
in reply to John Quiggin

Yes, I think many (not just “some”) would support this:
“the government needs to ban Nazi sites like X altogether. Existing hate speech laws would suffice”

It seems the US has no equivalent to our bans on hate speech etc - in place to protect people, especially vulnerable people.

It really does seem to be a jungle over there, in the US - but that’s no reason why it should be like that here in Australia & our near neighbours & friends.

Thanks for saying this so clearly. 🙂

the language "All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status" is from article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Australia has ratified. I agree that if taken seriously this would be a pretty problematic principle, but lawyers in countries like Spain have presumably persuaded themselves that it doesn't mean what it plainly seems to say.

There is a subset of people in the world who think it's an act of bigotry to point out the supreme hypocrisy of a nation that was established to provide refuge for a group of oppressed people who were subject to genocide, using its own military might to subject *another* oppressed group of people to genocide.

If the comparison with a well known genocidal fascist regime of the past is so upsetting, maybe you should just sit with that feeling for a bit and reconsider who and what you support.

This entry was edited (Sunday, May 4, 2025, 12:38 PM)
in reply to timberwraith

Or you could just use DARVO tactics and turn other people's critical observations of one's support for something so unjust and terrible into an excuse to portray yourself as the true victim.

This, by the way, is a common approach of oppressors everywhere.

It's hard to look in the mirror, isn't it?

This entry was edited (Sunday, May 4, 2025, 12:23 PM)

"But it's wrong to use the fascist regime of the past who subjected members of that nation to genocide as a means of criticizing the hypocrisy of this nation subjecting another group of people to genocide."

Your sense of "wrong" defies logic, ethics, and common sense empathy for others.

This is a YOU problem.

in reply to timberwraith

And you can (and will) reflexively label this as bigotry because it's a useful thought-stopping action and an ass cover for your own support of brutality, abuse, and horror.

You don't have to think about the nature of what you support if you can just reach for that convenient response.

You're covering for the murder of others by doing this.

And that's EXACTLY why you are doing this.

THAT is the bottom line here.
