Sharing is caring…
…or so some folks like to say…
I have written before about how I left places like FaceBook, Twitter (before it turned to the vile thing called X these days), and later on, also Instagram. I had left FB for a while already, and then the stories were coming through of that Musk person wanting to buy (and break) Twitter, I went looking for something different.
I found an app that had promise, but it wasn’t really working, and they couldn’t keep it up. I also found something called “Mastodon” on the “Fediverse”, and I had no idea what to expect. I wrote about it when I had just joined, back on November 25th 2022 (Bye bye birdie 🐦). I learned a lot since then, I experienced with other bits the FediVerse had to offer, which I also shared in several posts (Expanding my FediVerse). I tried several instances and several services, and now, I am currently “stable” on a few that I enjoy.
I started out on Mastodon with one account, I made some others, experimented with some, as every instance had its own pros and cons. It took me about a year to discover the “beige.party” instance, which attracted me due to its HUGE character count, which was very welcome to my journal toots. I migrated my accounts there, which was good, but also a bit of a dare. As, if the beige instance goes down, all my accounts will be dead then. Or at least for the time that it’s down. The beige instance is awesome, there is only one thing that I would love for it to have happen: to upgrade it to the latest Mastodon version.
The admin had a series of setbacks, and he’d been absent for a while. He says that upgrading the instance to the latest version is rather technical, so it’s been “planned” for some time now. The latest version does offer some options that our current one doesn’t have, which is a shame. But, the instance is good, with good moderation, with lovely emojis, and of course that huge character count! I have donated to the instance a few times, and I will try to do so again in a little while. The costs of running the instance should not be carried by its owner alone. As Mastodon has no ads or any other income generation, the instances run on donations, grants, or people “rent” their own little private ones.
I have been on Beige with three accounts for a while now. My AuDHD brain likes to keep “order” in things, so some topics need to be separated, to keep it neat, and to not bore people with stuff… I have my main account, Pixy’s Journey, my fitness account, Pixy’s Fit Journey, and my gaming account, Playstation Pixy. I have tried Vernissage for a while , but as they implemented a no-AI thing, I switched back to Pixelfed again. I actually have two Pixelfed accounts, one where I mostly share the current bits, and a newer account, where I share many memories of Arwen, amongst other things. And, I am using a PeerTube account, where I share my videos. Ow, and I have a Loops account as well, but I only use it every now and then.
All these accounts are connected with each other, and I can share things I post on one account, through one of the others as well. And, as you may have seen from time to time, I share Toots from Mastodon (like in my book posts), or I share the videos from PeerTube here. I should be able to share images from Pixelfed as well, but somehow, I have never gotten that to work properly. The same goes for Loops, I should be able to embed them, but for some reason, WordPress won’t properly do those either. Maybe I need a paid account for that, to add some extra possibilities to the site… 🤔
But yeah… I obviously share a lot here on my blog site. And, I try to share stuff on my FediVerse sites as well… 😊 And, of course, I use Flickr a lot as well. As it works properly to share things in my blog here, and because it’s an easy way to share pictures with folks (and have it as a back-up as well).
Sharing is caring… And I know I sometimes share too much. But, for me, it’s an outlet. A way to let my brain ramble, to clear itself, to focus itself, and also a way to share all I deal with. I have stated before that I started this blog for a ver selfish reason: to have a way to deal with my often overwhelming brain activity. I share my experiences. I try to dig for some more info about things I deal with, so I can share that with readers as well. And, of course, when I look for info, it will help me as well, as I can learn from it too.
I know the FediVerse isn’t for everyone. I know some folks are so “stuck” on the old stuff, even though it is getting more bad by the day, it’s what they’re “used to”, and also where many brands and famous folks are still on, so… They stick around. But, if you want to try out some of the Fedi, I am always willing to try and assist to get you started. I am definitely not a pro, there’s much I don’t know… But, I have made some good friends, there, and it’s a good place to be. Whether you want to share micro-blogs, pictures, videos, and/or shorts. (I know Fedi offers even more than that, but these are the ones I know a bit of).

Expanding my FediVerse
The FediVerse is huge. So many bits that are connected in one way or another, all through the marvels of something called ActivityPub. I’ve joined my first bit of Fedi back in November ’22, when the whole of Twitter started to head to the shitter, excuse the language…I joined Mastodon. I leaned about Mastodon and instances and all that. I made different accounts as my brain required to keep certain things separated. Which may be weird to some, it that’s just how my brain wants it… So I was active on Mastodon, and then I joined Pixelfed in February of 2024. I joined PeerTube later that year, and I’ve been trying out Loops. I tried a Sharkey instance, which is like Masto but with more options. And now… I’ve been trying out Friendica.
Some say it’s the FediVerse’s answer to Meta’s Facebook. But then, without the ads, without the algorithm, without the spam, and with the ability to connect to other FediVerse projects and also RSS.
As I started writing this post, I’ve been on the platform for several days. I’ve mostly been using the mobile site, which doesn’t have all the options that the desktop version offers. But changes made on desktop will transfer to mobile. For instance, I changed the theme and it’s colors when I used it on my laptop, and the next time that I used the phone, it showed me that these and those colors.
I started following my own FediVerse accounts first. And then I slowly started adding some friends. Most are on Masto, so they link through the ActivityPub bits. When I started on an instance that was high in the list of the index on the Friendica site, I didn’t know that the instance was having some issues every now and then with some downtime. But the admin was working on it. With the developers of Friendica, so I hoped that they would be able to resolve the downtime bits.
There are many options to have your Friendica become the social media style you want it to be. But as most options were needing to be set on a desktop, and I used my phone most, it took me some time to find out all the settings and options.
The first thing I noticed was, when people want to follow you, there are options like “follow back” or “have them see your content”. So if that person’s profile isn’t showing you things you’re not interested in following, you can still allow them to follow you while you don’t have to see their content. There is an option called “circles”, where you can add friends to different kind of circles. And then you can filter them out easily, or share things with just them… I haven’t tried it all, as I write this, as I don’t have that many friends yet, so it’s all just still rather basic. 😊
I will need to log some more time on my laptop with Friendica to check out all it’s options. And, at the moment that I’m wiring this, the instance often has issues starting in the night and it lasts a few hours. It’s just my instance, probably because it’s a busy instance and they have no experience with that usage yet. But for now, I hope that they wil be able to fix it ASAP. Or I’ll need to ask for advice to find a new instance. And I have no idea what I can transfer. As on Masto, you can’t transfer your toots when you change instance…

Edit before this post went live: The instance I joined Friendica on, Friendica.world, has been having a lot of downtime during the night. As that’s usually my busiest time, I found a second instance to make a back-up account. I would like to stay with the first one, but if they can’t resolve the issues, it’s a bit hard for me to really enjoy it. My back-up account can be found at: social.trom.tf/profile/pixy.
