It is the "problem" of how accessible everything is. I know plenty of genuinely amazing coders who have no idea how an operating system (let alone the hardware it runs on) works because they don't need to know. EVERYONE has stories of people who don't understand directory structures because they grew up on google drive.
And it REALLY does not help that the average fediverse evangelist can't shut up and just give a simple answer.
In the Warframe space? What I and others have noticed works REALLY well is to tell the person trying it out "At the end of a mission you are going to get like 40 currencies. Ignore that shit, it doesn't matter". And in fediverse stuff? The answer is just to say "It is like having an email account at gmail or hotmail or whatever"*. It doesn't matter. Just go to join-lemmy.org or whatever and pick one of the top servers after doing their questionnaire".
Instead we have "Well, you need to understand federation and why it is so important. Read this white paper and then come back to me and I'll suggest a few youtube videos that explain what you are having trouble with"
*: The fact that I couldn't think of a good email provider that normies use IS the problem.

There should be a link, that redirects you to the registration page of a random (maybe based on geo ip) Lemmy server. Just don't mention to the user that they have a choice of servers. Just have them register and get on. Later, while using the Fediverse, they will learn how it works and be able to understand what it means to choose a Lemmy server yourself.
Anything else is just too complicated for the average person, I think. Hell, I think domain names other than lemmy.xxx is confusing some people.
random (maybe based on geo ip) Lemmy server.
Random servers usually give lackluster experiences: lemmy.world/post/24220536
Hell, I think domain names other than lemmy.xxx is confusing some people.
This. Techies know custom domains are a thing. A LOT of people are going to look askance at anything that isn't among the most common TLDs. I mean, lemmy.zip is kinda funny. But it also screams "don't click me, zip files from an unknown source are dangerous!"
...and now I'm having intrusive thoughts about exe being a TLD. I'm-a go lay down until the voices stop.
lemmy.xxx
Risky click.
Edit: It's unregistered. Which I view as a total failure of the Lemmy community.
I see that hexbear.net, lemmygrad.ml, and Lemmy.ml are all recommendations there. So there might be a problem with that plan... They hate the West, whereas people in Reddit are FROM the West, and overall even if they join Lemmy, I cannot imagine them remaining here for very long.
I almost quit Lemmy after even just a couple of mere discussions with people on those instances - I sure as fuck would not have stuck around if my entire instance was surrounded by them!
Would YOU join Truth.Social, the Alt-Right network? Well, here at Lemmy, we are the Alt-Left one. It is zero surprise to me at all that centrists on Reddit are not desiring to come to this place that is so highly unwelcoming to ~~them~~ anyone who does not use Linux btw.
I don't even bother with the largest communities here anymore, which all seem like circle jerk echo chambers to me. Of the top 10 communities on Lemmy.World, I am no longer subscribed to any of them. And then of the next 10, I am only subscribed to Not the Onion and Fediverse.
Just like Reddit, the largest ones have most of the toxicity. The niche subs are way more chill. Unfortunately, being on Lemmy.World you can't interact with any of the content on Beehaw - which has odd moderation behaviors, chief among them being that people must be "nice* whatever that means.
So more niche subs might be to your liking as well. You can't force people to like what you say though, only either tailor your comments to match their viewpoints or else move to where yours are at least respected and hopefully even welcomed.

You can test that assumption at your convenience by making a post or even just a reply in !ChapoTrapHouse@hexbear.net. I don't think it will turn out like you hoped.😀
My point is that it highly depends which community you say something in. The more niche the more likely that is to be true but the popular ones seem full of people just waiting to dunk on people's poor judgement - ChapoTrapHouse even explicitly says that right in the sidebar area!😛

I wanted to give you some shade for not posting any links to back up your claims.
There was a rumor going around that EULAs can be easily attacked, but when I did a very unthorough search of it, I found the end of this wikipedia article states otherwise.
I'm not making any claims that require sources or links, it's simply a philosophy and a fact of life, depending how you look at it.
Just because something is a rule and you may face consequences for breaking it, does not mean that you must follow it. You always have the choice and the option to refuse to follow a rule or a law.

As the author said in the website, saying a platform is open source when you haven't even released the source is nothing but wrong. And that is not the only thing he has done it seems.
~~I personally can't take his apologies seriously after his cocky harassments.~~
Many of the points are bullshit and that's without even having any context, it's evident from the posts themselves.
Like the part where he allegedly "threatened legal action" - all he was saying is that outside fedi/oss that would mean a legal action, sounds like pointing out the advantages of oss/fedi, not threatening a legal action.
I would urge you to re-read that and scrutinize the claims because I do not think that should ruin your view of Dan. Think about the claims and ask your self if you really care about those points.
That letter comes off as extremely pathetic. The guy is human. Nothing said there was crazy or rude or worth canceling support for a over. None of the nitpicked points had nearly enough evidence or context for people to make a judgement. The presentation was extremely bias and borderline untrue.
For example "I am also in talks with @hazy! to join our team" is not an official offer to join the team. Yet this letter presents it as a set in stone offer that Dan went back on for unjustified reasons. Dan gave his reasons why the offer fell through and if he is to be believed (and if he isnt) then the negotiations fell through and thats normal and ok.
Another example. This letter says Dan is so mean to his fellow fedi devs calling them rats. Then shows 3 instances of Dan clearly responding to attacks against him. Why can these "fellow" fedi devs attack dan but Dan cannot defend himself? The comments for Dan were unbelievably tame. He does not call fedi devs rats he calls some of the people attacking him rats. There is a big difference there.
I would push back on any example in that doc (except the open source one) because they all seem very stupid.
People start these projects as a hobby and users expect higher than corporate level professionalism its insane. You want people to be human but you dogpile anyone who acts human.
I feel like the default view should be "All".
Also it would be nice to be able to view "All" for a community that shares the same name across all federated instances.

Another neat tip for you Friendica folks out there.
Did you know you can add tags to posts you see in your Network Feed?
You can help your community look for topics of interest by essentially proposing tags you think fit a post.
So if you look at this example from Associated Press, you can click the “…” for further options.
You’ll see “Add tag”
Enter any tag you think is appropriate, and a comment will appear underneath the post to indicate you added the tag.
Now anyone who is interested in that topic can see the tagged post.

I think you would be wise to include a rule along the lines of “while it is permissible to repost content from other platforms such as TikTok (ideally with proper attribution to the source), accounts that exist for the primary purpose of reposting non-original content from other platforms may be limited or removed”
I block accounts that do high-volume, low-effort reposts, but they also waste your money and server resources!

Mastodon and other projects dominate the Fediverse scene
But, Friendica doesn't miss out on any of the action!
If you started elsewhere on the Fediverse, it’s not very clear if Friendica is able to copy or move your posts over for you.
But, Friendica can help transfer your follows over.
If you head over to Settings > Import Contacts, you’ll see the Import contacts page.
As of this writing, the CSV file option did not work as expected. But, entering a proper account name in the form box did start the import process.
You will be asked to keep the page open while Friendica processes each follow. You’ll be given a progress note (x/total follows).
Now there may be odd times when Friendica “times out” and does not refresh the page at all. Simply reload the Import contacts page, and the process resumes.
If you have contacts that no longer exist, or have some kind of issue, you’ll see something like below.
Just go to your address bar, which will show you the counter for where you are on your contacts list. In this example, Friendica hit the error at “821”. You just replace “821” with the next on the list, “822”, and hit enter.
Friendica will resume the process until you reach the end.
You’re done! Your contacts will now be added to your Friendica account. You are free to organize your friends according to your “Circles” (Friendica) or “Lists” (Mastodon/Misskey)

Hey all, just another newbie post about Friendica here as I'm trying to learn the ropes.
I notice that some times when I follow someone - be it an account on Mastodon, Sharkey, etc - their Network Posts are blank until they post something.
So I went searching for a setting or some kind of toggle to perhaps change that to enable me to see a user's existing posts prior to the point when I followed them.
I could only find the following link below which mentioned the process.
Is there a toggle somewhere that would let people see older posts from users on Fediverse?
github.com/friendica/friendica…
Currently it works like this: to see a post or comment your server has to receive it first. This happens if any of these are true:1you or someone else on your server is subscribed to the author of this item
2 the item is reshared by someone you or someone else on your server is subscribed to
3 you interacted with child item (e.g. reply to the post) which causes parent items to get fetchedIf you just stumbled upon someone's post and there are some comments from people who never made it to your server you won't see them - and I think this is the case for any Fedi platform, not just Friendica. This is also the reason you sometimes don't see full "like" counts for others' posts.

If you go to your contacts tab, you'll see options for the local server here, and globally.
If your friend is here on friendica.world you can just look up their name. Otherwise you'll search for @[namehere]@[server.com]
If your friend needs to set up an account, you can send an invite as well with their email.
Friendica's quite a comfortable platform. I get the feeling I could get used to this pretty quickly - and it's compatible with a lot of existing apps for Mastodon and others.
I'm coming from the whole micro-blogging experience, and over the years I've fallen into this habit of using hashtags and numbered posts to chain long threads together to track certain topics. I felt Mastodon and others did this incredibly well compared to even Twitter so I fit right in.
How would I keep posts together along certain issues or topics here?
I'll point out that I see people chaining their posts together on Mastodon from my Friendica account. But those chained posts are indented further and further, much like an email. I suspect if I did the same with long standing chains of posts, the indents would eventually lose meaning.

Yeah, it works more like the older type of social networks where there was a post and then the comments. Same as on Facebook, LinkedIn, the defunct Google+ etc.
And yeah, the threaded view is very useful in keeping the trace of the discussion. Along with those "in reply to" links next to the people's name.
Also, there's no reason for you to do the same threading thing. Mastodon servers display the full post, no matter how long, if it doesn't have a title (it doesn't play well with posts that have one. Writefreely has the same problem, but since it is seen more as a full-fledged blogging platform of sorts, people don't really care about it).

I'm mainly enjoying my time on calckey.world, but I've been exploring a few Fediverse offerings - inspired by @Elena Rossini on Sharkey
I just wanted to share a quick observation here.
First, for whatever reason, Friendica does not handle the "Latest Activity" Channel very well. When I try to use that "filter", the page doesn't load or takes a very long time. Even if the page loads properly, the feed does not refresh as per settings.
For now, I've simply removed that Channel to avoid the issue. I'm fairly new and couldn't figure out the difference between latest post vs latest activity anyway.
Second, another issue is when I try to load the "Groups" Circle, the page does load slowly. I only have 5 lemmy groups there to test things out. I'm guessing something isn't playing well there.
