Shannon and the Clams - Sleep Talk

I have been enjoying the new series Record Rooms from Canada on Youtube. The host is an avid punk collector and musician. What I enjoy about this series is most of his connections have a punk influence from local bands which is a bit different from some of the other crate digger features. Their love for power pop punk and garage got me thinking I haven’t listened to the genre for awhile. I use to spin a lot of it for our radio show and vinyl nights. I prefer my power pop punk to be female fronted generally. I’m a sucker that retro 60’s girl group / bubblegum tinge that was very popular in the late 2000’s.

A favourite from that era is queercore outfit Hunx and His Punx. Shannon Shaw was a member of the band and doing her own thing Shannon and the Clams. That’s how I discovered this. Shannon looks like she’s stepped out of a John Waters movie, whilst she shreds over a guitar, and her voice (similar to Wanda Jackson) growls or soothes depending on the tune. This is the only release of theirs I own. The others get a bit to samey for me, despite how much I love the sound. Discogs tells me I bought this in 2013 for $24 and was my first Discogs purchase.

Fishbone EP

On Friday we had our work Christmas party at a wine bar. I opted to contribute by playing some tunes. I couldn’t think of anything worse then being in a small space, making small talk, and listening to bad music. People loved the tunes and some discovered new music. It made me think about how I’ve been making mix tapes, mix cds, playlists and sharing music with people my whole life. Even as a kid I'd make mix tapes from the radio. When I was in late primary school/early high school I had a little pink retro bag and I'd jam it full and take it to parties. I'd sit by the CD player and play tunes. I guess some things don't change.

Fishbone, was one of the discoveries on a mix cd a friend made me. The CD was a gold nugget of tunes and bands I hadn’t heard before. When I pulled this out today my husband went “ah the Godzilla album”. I was confused. Despite many a listens previously, I hadn't realised (or forgot) one of the tracks on the second side is about Freeze-Dried Godzilla Farts. I feel like there are other tracks and politics they should be remembered for, but I guess the Godzilla one is unique.

Radio Birdman - Living Eyes

I decided impulsively to rearrange my records which seemed like a terrific idea at first. I’m a genre kinda gal and I am running out of room. So I popped this on whilst piles of records were around the living room.

I've posted on here before about when I was younger and getting into Australian 70's and 80's punk. I have a real soft spot for Australian 80’s garage rock. Although recorded in 1978 it has that 80’s sound to it. It's not something I come back to often these days. So it was good to give this one a spin again.

I first bought this from Port Hole when I was either 17 or 18 and is one of the handful of early records I first bought. This is an original and the cover is falling apart but it plays well.

2005 - 2006 was a great time for live shows in our little town. I saw so many touring acts then. Radio Birdman reformed and toured in 2006 at Fowlers Live. It was a great set despite being a come back show which I'm always a little sceptical about. I remember thinking wow this will be their last tour ever. They’ve since been touring pretty regularly including last year. I remember my friend and I dressed up for the night, me with a 60’s leopard print cocktail dress I bought second-hand and my hair big channelling Poison Ivy from the Cramps.

On re listen there is a line in one of the tracks I 94 that’s always bothered me, despite being a rocking tune - “Eskimo Pies comin' to you aha yeah”. The terminology has not aged well. When I was discussing how I don’t understand the use of that line with my husband, their encyclopaedia knowledge informed me it’s the name of an American Ice cream. I’m still a bit perplexed to be honest.

Angie Pepper – Frozen World / Why Tell Me

I’ve written about Angie Pepper before here. She’s one of my favourite Oz singers.

We stopped by Lenny’s on the way home from Ikea. It’s like an Ikea cleanse haha. Just as we finished talking I was about to leave when I spotted this on the shelf. Winning. I have wanted this for some time. It’s a shame that there isn’t more Angie Pepper / Passengers material nor the recognition.

Friday Cupcake and Tunes - 25/04/25 

Angie Pepper / The Passengers - It's Just That I Miss You 

One of my favourite Australian Punk / Garage singers / bands from the late 70s through to the early 80s. Think Patti Smith, Blondie and 60s girl group sounds.

Listened to this whilst eating a cookie monster cupcake my neighbour's son made us as a thank you for being good neighbours and returning their balls from over the fence. Day made honestly. 

This is a collection of tracks from the Gadigal /Sydney band The Passengers and later band The Angie Pepper Band formed with her husband and famed Radio Birdman co-founder Deniz Tek. Both bands were short lived and their material is limited. They are often overlooked in Australian music retrospectives from that era. When I think of record store day and the spirit of represses for the day, I think albums like this ought to be repressed. Not some shitty motorhead lost tapes volume 6 live in the 90s... 

I first discovered Angie Pepper on the cult Australian "Do the Pop" garage/punk compilation from 2002. It was my first year at uni and I was heavily into that stuff at the time. Angie's voice is incredible. The hooks on these tracks are chef's kiss. Face With No Name is one of my all-time favourite tracks. I found a 45 in the wild at a record fair couple of years ago. 

This album comp was only released on CD. I think you can stream it on YouTube. I realised how lazy my listening habits have been by putting streaming on when not spinning records. I had really missed this album.

Patti Smith - Horses

Last night my childhood friend came over for dinner. They were hugely influential in shaping my music interests, introducing me to 70s punk in my teenage years. We continue to this day sharing music and new discoveries. We were discussing old record stores and fairs. Perhaps it was the nostalgia that prompted me to spin this today - my first vinyl record purchase.

I bought this on my first year of uni at a record fair. I was 17 and my grandfather gave me his record player. The fairs then were held at the showgrounds and were huge. There was a seller who use to have just 2 crates of punk and they were all class. This is an original 1975 press - UK version. I was so inspired how cool as fuck this cover was. Probablly very cliché to say but Patti gave me permission to be me in so many ways.

I still feel moved when the needle drops and the intro to Gloria starts just as I did the first day I brought this home and spun it.

I saw Patti Smith in 2017. She was 70 at the time and rocked just as hard. She was phenomenal. I'm not religious but it was the closest thing I could consider to some sort of religious experience. I cried.

Why Diet When You Could Riot - compilation 

One of my favourite records and one that is very sentimental. Despite that, I have not spun it in years. Was good to dig this one out. I've been on a bit of a punk tip lately.

This album is a collection of tracks from the bands that preformed at the DIY space Riots Not Diets in Bighton UK from 2011 - 2012. It's a cute little package with surprise feature of Jarvis Cocker throughout the record (use to go to the gigs from what I can gather), a cartoon of Kathleen Hanna on the label, cardboard zine about the DYI space and insert with snippets about the bands all packed by the DIY label Tough Enuff. It includes early singles by Trash Kit who were one of my favourite post punk revival acts of that era, Skinny Girl Diet and many others. I use to play tracks from this comp a lot on our radio show. 

I bought this at a time when we were going to lots of DIY punk shows in Tarntanya / Adelaide at Animal House (now something different) and Mad Mouse Alley (RIP). After years of not going to gigs because the only local shows playing in my local area were white men in pubs noodling on guitars, it was incredibly refreshing to have these DIY spaces and sounds. 

In the current political climate queer punk DIY spaces are needed more then ever right now. 

Keep On Rioting. ✊️
