Punk 45: Kill the Hippies! Kill Yourself! The American Nation Destroys Its Young - Underground Punk in the United States of America, Vol. 1.

Last night I went to the first hardcore show I have been to in years. I’m not a huge fan of the "bro"style hardcore, but this was female fronted band Scowl which I quite like. However despite going to see the headline, I ended up loving the support act – Baltimore left anti colonial act End It. Fuck they were the best punk act I’d seen in ages. Front man Akil Godsey was incredible. The evening lit up my punk spirit. The crowd was full of young and old, from various punk communities, diverse and inclusive. It warmed my heart.

Admittedly I often listen to more punk in the car / train than on a Saturday morning on my turn table. But last night inspired me to dig this one out - 2013 Soul Jazz comp of early singles from DIY labels with the longest and most obnoxious title.

The Only Ones – Special View

When I was a teenager I was quite fond of buying Mojo magazines, particularly if they had a CD compilation. I still to this day have some copies of those compilations. One stand out was a punk a new wave one. That’s where I first heard the Only Ones.

Normally I have a pretty sharp memory for when and where I bought my records. But this one had me stumped. I have no recollection. I suspect Porthole early on. Like many, I picked it up for the hit single Another Girl, Another Planet. Interestingly, the song was inspired by a woman who looked like she'd stepped out of Fellini film. I decided to give the whole album a proper listen. Not a bad little nugget of English power pop as an overall album.

Blondie - Self Titled

This use to be my favourite Blondie album when I was a teenager. My favourite ultimately became Plastic Letters but I have such a soft spot for this. I bought my copy from DJ Ian (RIP). It was one of a handful of my first records bought.

This is a 1977 pressing on Private Stock, Australia release. $15 then too. Sheesh.

Baseball - Animal Kingdom

Continuing the 2000s listening. Gave this a spin in the car on the way to the hairdresser.

Naarm/Melbourne based band containing collective of musicians from various bands at the time. Influences of The Pixies and The Ex - but with more violin. This and Love of Diagrams were my fave local acts from that era. The first half of the album is great. Then it gets a bit much in one sitting.

There is a good doco of the alternative music scene from that time. You can watch it here: youtu.be/qpXPoOijavc?si=zd9_AK…

Wolf and Cub - self titled ep

Pulled this one out the cd crate and had instant flashbacks to the old shotz sticky floor and my hot pink cons. It's been a good 18 or so years since I've given this a spin albeit the odd few times on radio. I use to thrash this if you can't tell by the scuffed cover. Local Tarntanya / Adelaide band's 2004 ep. Two drummers, and frantic guitar and vocals. So many of my friends and or people I use to know credited / involved on this. They released a lot of other albums, but nothing ever really captured the sound of this ep or them live in the early days.

The Pop Group - For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder?

This album still sounds as relevant now as it did then. I don't remember the last time I spun this. It's not one I can spin often possibly to the relief of my neighbour. It's pretty intense. We saw the reformed Pop Group in 2015 at the Freemasons Hall of all places for Unsound.

The pricetag reminded me this was another purchase from the old Licorice Pie ($30 which then I would have thought was a lot but looking at discogs now for this...yikes). There is a stamp inside the record that says The Fung Tak Wing but google didn't really help.

The bass line on Justice is killer. Forgotten how much I love that track.

The Undertones - Hypnotised

I haven't spun this in years. I loved The Undertones when I was younger and I still have a big soft spot for them. I bought this from the Magil Big star for $8. I don't know why I left the price tag on then. I have the first self-titled album on CD. I loved all the tongue in cheek and awkward songs about unrequited love. On listen now, some lyrics have aged better than others.

Maybe there was something about the kids from Derry that resonated with me being awkward in my shitty suburban town. I remember I was gifted my grandfather's record player and I'd always turn the volume up on this record.

Thoroughly enjoyed playing this and now I want to watch the doco as I realised I've not seen it.
