Since I haven't done much self-hosting-wise lately (more on this another time) I decided to... jailbreak my old Kindle(s)!
I was a little terrified to be honest. But the whole process took LESS THAN A MINUTE.
So after my spare Kindle (a 5th gen from 2012), I'm on to my main one (a 4th gen from 2011, my oldest gadget that I still use daily).
Later this week I will "liberate" my audiobooks!

I just did it to be able to add e-books from any kind of store (not just Amazon) and have my own custom screensavers.
No advanced modding for now, just the simple stuff 😊

in reply to Elena Rossini on GoToSocial ⁂ • • •To be fair, you could add boks from any store already, you just had to convert them to a supported format (which, granted, is hard if the books you try to convert come with DRM).
Calibre (a neat little library management software) does many thing, and one of them is converting ebooks. And it supports outputting ebooks in the two format supported by kindles (azw3 and mobi)

in reply to Ethan Sholly • • •aw yes! but a little confession: I moved my Ghost blog to Magic Pages so that I don't have to get a full education of how to do Docker. It was just beyond my sphere of comprehension (and Magic Pages is CHEAPER than Mailgun + a VPS plan).
Now with that big blue whale off my back I can turn my curiosity elsewhere... like: FreeBSD for example 🤗

I had purchased a newer Kindle in 2022 that died on me within a year (rough treatment by my then toddler). But I had never taken a liking to it because of the lack of buttons and the need to swipe the edge of the screen to turn the page.
Now I'm just glad to have these 13+ year old Kindles with buttons to play with. The battery life on both is still great 😀
