Remember that the NAACP is calling for a massive boycott of Walmart, McDonald's and Meta because of their about face on DEI under pressure from the vague notions of the US president and his friends.
I would appreciate it you participated in this boycott too. It seems like it's pretty big.
(The NAACP has likely spoken with people at these organizations and found no common ground. They kind of hate calling for corporate boycotts so I can only imagine they go nowhere and were disgusted.)

Good morning Fedi friends!
Today marks the 2-month anniversary of my #selfhosting journey: on Dec 17 I signed up for a VPS and installed #YunoHost mastodon.social/@_elena/113667…
I have never felt more empowered, tech-wise, than in the past two months. I set up my own #GoToSocial, #Pixelfed and #Friendica instances. Seeing the label "admin" next to my name always makes me smile.
Today I will sign up for a 2nd VPS (that runs on Ubuntu) and manually install #Ghost. Wish me luck!
It’s happening!!! I signed up for a #VPS and I’m about to install #YunoHost. Exciteeeeeeed (and slightly scared).I’m so early in my #Linux journey but I was emboldened after watching a video walkthrough of YunoHost, with the narrator repeating time and time again « it’s so easy a child could do it ».
Let’s see if « it’s so easy a Linux newbie could do it».
Wish me luck! 😅

I haven’t followed the context, but I wish they had decided to try and get things to work with MariaDB rather than MySQL 8, considering that the latter is now Oracle-owned and not FOSS…
oh. I got the same issue on gotosocial (which I discovered through you!)
good luck!
What worries me with YunoHost is the implications of an easier point of entry for self hosting.
Someone more experienced could run MySQL and MariaDB on the same server, create docker instances of either or find other possibilities to run it, without depending on Yunohost volunteers.
Having an easy point of entry is good, but it poses it's own risk. And someone with less experience might not be able to evaluate those risks when they want to want support something long term.

I don't think this error means a disastrous install problem.
ECONNREFUSED is a TCP error, so this tells me you are not connecting with a socket, but using a TCP connection on port 3306. So why would the connection be refused?
What I would do next, from the command line, is to see if anything is even listening on port 3306. Depending on whether anything accepts the connection, it gives the next debugging step.
telnet, btw, is not natively installed on Ubuntu, so you may need to do this first before continuing:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install telnetd
Then:
telnet localhost 3306
So, is anything listening? If not, then either the database didn't start or it's listening on a different port.
If something is listening, then try to access the database directly:
mysql -h localhost -u root -p 3306
If this fails, hopefully you get a meaningful error message telling you why. Maybe a DB issue, or perhaps no database is up.
If it works, then your database is up and running and listening on port 3306. This is good news. So either your Ghost configuration has the wrong host/port information for the database, or perhaps the connection needs or doesn't need an SSL connection.
But, these are the steps I'd do first just to get additional information about the issue.
I wish it finished the sentence, "not a recogonisable Ghost installation because ..."
What happens when you run "sudo mysql" ?
If it opens and connects, then it's still using socket-based authentication. Then I would manually run the ALTER, FLUSH, and exit. Then try to restart ghost.
If it doesn't open, but asks for the password, and the password works, then this change in the authentication method already was done and the problem isn't this particular step. Does ghost doctor provide any diagnostics?
This is what self-hosting is about. Living in a cloud of confusion because you're dealing with a bunch of different tech, none of which you'd ever be able to become an expert in. So, there's a lot of trial and error. This is so familiar. And the fun of it.
The ALTER statement format, I believe, is wrong. It is showing single quotes around "mysql_native_password" which makes it a literal string. But, IDENTIFIED WITH specifies the name of the authentication plugin, not a string. Can you try instead:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED WITH mysql_native_password BY '<your-new-root-password>';
Reference: dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/e… and the section showing:
| IDENTIFIED WITH auth_plugin BY 'auth_string'
Notice, no single quotes around auth_plugin
Don't give up yet.
Can you ping the exact ALTER command that you are using (with the password redacted, of course).

The thing about boycotts is that they only work when they've got enough same-minded people to be effective.
Their side is all about "go woke go broke", but the problem is that "woke" is more profitable. They couldn't stop the Barbie movie from making far over a billion dollars.
Obviously they retroactively crow victory whenever something they call "woke" fails to be profitable, but some part of them realizes how pathetic this is when most productions fail to catch on anyway.

Presumably any attempt at public mobilisation is vulnerable to far right trolling. I made a possibly naive suggestion to minimise such trolling by keeping the set of people moderating datasets constrained to those who care about them the most.

@jack @SecureInStyle The defining characteristic of all of these racist bigot misogynist homophobe transphobes is: fear.
Something in their individual personal histories -- not the same thing for all, but *something* -- has caused them to be, at their very core, utterly terrified of the Other. It's really a terror of the otherness within themselves, that part of all of us that we disavow, the place where we're innately alienated from ourselves. Most of us try to deal with it...
@jack @SecureInStyle ...in healthy ways, and we succeed and fail, succeed and fail, and such is life.
But *these* people...these hate-filled, violent people canNOT tolerate even the mere hint that they themselves are not whole and complete. The only way they can sublimate the fear is to disavow that innate self-alienation. They only way they can deal with it is to look for a scapegoat, someone(s) *outside of themselves* they can blame for why they're scared...
@jack @SecureInStyle ...and why they cannot know themselves.
Every fascism is born of a failed revolution, and every attempt to create "utopia" is really an outward symbol for these people's terror and disavowal: they create dystopia instead.
Wanting to create The Good Place where they (think they) can be whole and complete, they inevitably create The Bad Place instead.
@courtcan @SecureInStyle My personal experience is that exposure is the best medicine for overcoming fear of otherness.
Traveling to other places. Trying new things. Considering new/uncomfortable perspectives. Making an effort to talk with (or read content from) people who aren't cookiecutter examples of ourselves.
But you can't make someone care or to expand themselves or to allow themselves to be a bit vulnerable if they aren't willing to step a bit beyond their comfort 😢
@BruceMirken @SecureInStyle I'm thankful I am able & confident enough to do this these days.
That was not always the case. For many years while I was closeted, it hurt that none of the leaders in my life would stand up for folks (like me at the time) unable or afraid to speak up for themselves.
I'll be damned if I'm going to let someone experience that frustration if I can do something about it. No policy (or lack of policy) makes it okay to punch down on or scapegoat others.
Hell, I'm still angry with the Navy Chaplain Corps for being so cowardly near the end of DADT that LGBTQ folks couldn't trust them for fear of being outed.
Chaplains are supposed to be the spiritual mentors of Navy/USMC, & provide counseling & other services, but they made it clear during that time that admitting one was LGBTQ would be reported.
I'm 100% sure this led to deaths of folks among the LGBTQ community 😪 It certainly left me hurt back then.

@nomad2035 @CharlieActual @SecureInStyle I'm not saying this is technically impossible, especially considering the Android safety core thing as the step one to detect, but this is probably a bit of a reach.
More likely to see them stop supporting generic storage access or something - downloading PDFs or epubs to begin with being discouraged or disabled in favor of some walled garden approach for some made up technical reason & a subscription model atop that. Like they'll say their pubs are digitally signed but then put in a flag to not allow importing unsigned pubs. Their garden keeps the keys & access for the masses is reduced, but without the extra bad taste of just deleting data from devices.

Clearly all that enthusiasm is faked performative theater, by those conniving research scientists all scheming to hide the true science of how slavery is good actually. 🤡
I was thinking about this earlier today. The "brain drain" aspect. Not unlike Jewish intellectuals fleeing Nazi Germany. Progress relies heavily on diversity and therefore on tolerance.
If you only keep people with the same thoughts, you're not going to get new thoughts.
Yet another way in which this BS is sabotaging and weakening the USA.

…in the first nine months of 2019, the medical unit—which is responsible for tending to the medical needs of the White House staff—ordered 34 packs of fentanyl, 40 packs of morphine and 30 packs of ketamine. The drugs are usually used in a medical setting as a sedative, but can be used illicitly." Jan 29, 2024

I've thought for some time that science denyers lack whatever you need to imagine the vastness and intricacy of things. They can't imagine the amount of data that's gone into predictions about climate change for example, and in their minds, if they can't visualise it, it can't exist. If it can't exist, then scientists are just guessing, or are complicit in some kind of sinister plot.
”obsessive preoccupation with community decline” ”Cults of unity, energy & purity”.. ”Internal purification and external expansion” ..
These are direct quotes from Robers Paxton’s definition of #fascism
And it doesn’t matter to them. They would drive the whole thing to the ground and still blame someone for it. After all, victimhood is another key defining aspect of fascism..
I live in europe and I was devastated reading about this last night. Was unable to finish the article, unable to endure the ableism of what it describes.
I have ADHD myself and was also treated for depression almost a decade now until october last year when we were finally at the point to put me off SSRI.
I am in loss of words. This would have killed me.
can't wait! 🥳
I look forward to tech workplaces becoming even more disorganized and chaotic since, you know, so many people that specialized in executive function roles were laid off because it was deemed unnecessary.
🥴🥴🥴
I said this in the last posting of this maniac's attempt to ruin the lives of perfectly healthy, medicated people:
This is me. RFK Jr and the Republican Party want to put me into a concentration camp. There is no other word for it.
Because I use SSRIs to keep my mental balance, they want to come for me, take away my computers, my cellphone, my livelihood, and put me in a camp where I'll grow, I dunno, organic cabbages for the government.
This is Nazi shit.
@SecurityWriter Add the entertainment industry to the list, we have a similar composition of folks.
At a glance we might seem like 'small fish' in comparison to the entire tech sector, but the cultural ripples of declining quantity and quality of live events and performance would be insidious. They wouldn't even need to directly quash dissenting shows, the entire performing arts community would just be choked out by this.

Maybe? Or maybe not. Our government *was* run by corporations. It's now being strangled by the single wealthiest human on earth. All bets are off.
It's not coincidental that I'm now in the process of replacing my SSRIs with microdosing, which has been found to be more effective than antidepressants.

I have found the lunatic approach of this admin "interesting."
They are against "woke" things like electric cars -- and yet Musk is there. You would think Pharma would be completely opposed to RFK and his "You guys are evil" approach to medicine. Is it even possible he will have Medicare/Medicaid not pay for vaccines and some medicines at all?
And then there is the whole, "Law and Order Party" lets violent criminals out of prison and legalizes outright corruption.
And yet Johnson and Mitchell say not a single word.
Johnson is an acolyte. McConnell is reaping the wind.
Big Corporations must not have as much power as I thought, because they all KNOW that this hurts their profits.
and rest assured, it will not even remotely stop there.
Anything even VAGUELY related to 'mental conditions' will end up on that list. Which means we're now talking about VERY, VERY critical medications.
- Clonazepam (Klonopin), anti-epileptic also used for panic disorder
- Lorazepam (Ativan), used for nausea associated with cancer treatment and short-term withdrawal
- Carbamazepine (Tegretol), anticonvulsant, trigeminal neuralgia (AKA suicide disease,) and diabetic neuropathy

It seems like the Trump administration keeps attacking its own political and material base. I think the fascists actually believe their own propaganda.
The challenge is how to let them destroy themselves without destroying the rest of us in the process.
"I’m going to create these wellness farms where they can go to get off of illegal drugs, off of opiates, but also illegal drugs, other psychiatric drugs, if they want to, to get off of SSRIs, to get off of benzos, to get off of Adderall, and to spend time as much time as they need—three or four years if they need it—to learn to get reparented, to reconnect with communities.”

Doesn't sound so bad. Aotearoa once had places a bit like this.
Having time and space to deal with trauma may cure or at least mitigate some poor mental health. There is some evidence that poor diet can at least exacerbate it too (that's been my lived experience).
The devil is in the details though ...

Will these wellness camps be voluntary? I can imagine worse places to be placed under a compulsory treatment order (think One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), but rural camps could be much more difficult for family and friends to visit. Reducing the mental health benefits and informal oversight of care that comes with such visits.
What will they cost? Will this contribute to health-related debt for people who don't have insurance, or when the companies can avoid paying out?
(3/?)
@strypey History says they absolutely will not.
I get the rhetorical angle... But come on.
Kennedy is scary.
But just because he is wrong about solutions and causes, does not mean he is totally wrong

So, I think this is the right move.

Might just be a semantic difference, the three companies you’ve listed are there: naacp.org/campaigns/black-cons…
Like others have mentioned I rarely use any of those companies services, but I’ll be sharing it with my friends who do. Thank you for sharing it here

in reply to myrmepropagandist • • •Agreed. But NAACP is explicitly not using the word "boycott." And I suppose they are not including Target because that company supports several Black businesses.
It's easy to boycott MacDonald's. Meta a bit harder until you can get your tribe to move. And Walmart? I used to not shop there, but I'm already boycotting Amazon, so that leaves me with the problematic Target.
We've nearly waited too late to boycott the few retail stores we have left. So for me it's a work in progress.

Let's face the facts. Walmart and Boeing have a lot more money to offer lawyers than the NAACP. That is the threat the NAACP is confronting.
That does not mean that we, you, me or anyone can't make a list of anti DEI companies and act on our own initiative. Personally, I never liked going to McDonald's. Even when it was convenient.
