In which I respond to the @404media article, "You Can't Post Your Way Out of Fascism."
I argue that the "you can't post" piece ignores alternative social media, which itself is a form of activism that can, in fact, contribute to the fight against fascism.

I’ve been mulling over Janus Rose’s recent 404 Media article, “You Can’t Post Your Way Out of Fascism.”. In many ways, she’s not wrong. But once again people are ignoring an entirely other way of doing social media that can, in fact, fight fascism.RWG (Your awesome title)

To "yes, and…" your post:
I do think organizing our own online communities is a necessary part of the activism, but alone it is not sufficient. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, as I still keep thinking about Freire's words on hope: "hope is necessary, but it not enough. Alone, it does not win. But without it, my struggle will be weak and wobbly." (c.f. scholar.social/@gedankenstueck…)
I think the same applies to activism here! 🙂
Here in Canada, people @af3marti and I have been interviewing are keenly interested in local instances. There are quite a few -- Ottawa.place, @kostyn's niagara.social. We are working on a paper where we argue that local instances could be a really good approach, especially because of small market news deserts.
But all of this will take a lot of work.
Hmm it seems to me that posts amplifying fascist propaganda and talking points (framed as how horrible or stupid they are, but still) do just as well here as on Bluesky -- and "“posting about what people in power are saying and doing" (as Rose says) is certainly common here. And they're both as destructive here as on corporate media or Bluesky. And at least on Bluesky there are a lot of posts from abolitionist organizers with useful suggestions about what people can be doing, and posts from Black Americans highlighting the Jim Crow analogy -- which most white Mastodonians don't seem to have a lot of understanding of.
So while I certainly agree that in principle alternative social media has a lot to offer in this moment -- organizing on social media can help in the fight against fascism, and it's valuable to center or your organizing on platforms where the means of production aren't controlled by fascists -- the reality falls short in a lot of ways.
So I also disagree with the idea that running, moderating, and participating in federated social media is inherently in opposition to fascism. No, to the contrary, the admins and moderators who are tolerating -- and often contributing to -- anti-Blackness and anti-BIIPOC norms here are *reinforcing* fascism. So are developers and organizations that who don't prioritize safety functionality, and people who are supporting those projects at the expense of ones that do -- or people who only (or almost exclusively) supp[ort cis-led projects. The hard, unsexy work of organizing requires foregrounding racial and gender equity.
That's a good thing to change, and I think it is changeable. My thread at infosec.exchange/@thenexusofpr… is a step in that direction , as is the organizing work @waprivacy is doing on privacy. But it won't just chage itself so this perspective really needs to be foregrounded.
Organizing on decentralized social networks (1 / N)The Nexus of Privacy is planning a series of online discussions and video/phone calls focusing on organizing on decentralized social networks. There's a range of topics to cover, including looking at the tradeoffs between the different platforms for different use cases, brainstorming how organizers can leverage these platforms, easy ways to start exploring, and ways for groups to move as a whole.
privacy.thenexus.today/organiz… has a CryptPad survey (as well as a link to a version using Google Forms if you prefer that)
Or if you prefer, here are a couple of polls along with open questions, that cover some of the key information

Yikes. But yeah.
Although, more positively that excellent doc by Mariame Kaba points to both the value of posting and the potential of alternative social media: @Alien_Sunset posted a non-Google version at alien-sunset.neocities.org/blo… and shared it with fedi, and I saw a fair number of boosts.
Yeah. How often do you see admins of larger instances back Black people here challenging the anti-Blackness in fedi? How often do you see them intervene? Do moderation teams have the necessary cultural competency (and if so are people getting paid for their expertiese or is it relying on free labor from marginalized communities)?
And @emma you're right that there's an overall question about how people know what instances have enough of a problem of problematic behavior to defederate. But also even when track records are known opinions differ. looking up fosstodon on The Bad Space for example, there are some blocks, some silences, some unrestricted federation.
It's complicated. Defederation is powerful but blunt, it works for the worst-of-the-worst but when you've got an instance where most of the people are fine but a handful say casually-but-not-blatantly anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, etc things and mods don't take action ... maybe better to block individuals? But that's got it's own complications as well -- how do you get information on which individuals to block preemptively?
Oh yeah I remember that. First of all the absolute gall of somebody thinking they're a better judge of the risk-accessibiity tradeoff for people in the US likely to be surveilled and targeted reading that document than Mariame Kaba! Show some respect dammit!!!!! And not knowing who she is isn't an excuse. Grr. Fedi at its stereotypical worst.
On the other hand it's true that different people are in different situations and have different view of risks and may not want to interact with Google in any way shape or form , so @Alien_Sunset making it available in non-Google format has a lot of value. So it's also fedi at its best.
Dendan Setia (Nins) reshared this.
It was the best of Fedi, it was the blurst of Fedi!
It's all related -- quote boosts, Mastodon's refusal to support local-only posts (and hosting company's refusal to support forks like Glitch and Hometown that *do* have that support) or reply controls, the opposition to allow-list federation ... the culture affects what functionality gets prioritized and funded.
That said, I don't want to paint with too broad a brush, there *are* lots of admins and moderators and individuals here who really are participating in ways that are in opposition to fascism and big tech -- DAIR's combination of a microblogging instance and PeerTube is a great example. Some of fedi's (intermittent) values are very opposed to fascist norms -- for example the emphasis (by some, not others) on consent.
And I do think things are changing here. GoTo Social's getting a lot of momentum and and *is* prioriting safety functionality and consent. Website League and island networks are very interesting directions.
So I'm not pushing back on the possibilities, just objecting to the framing that it activity here is *inherently* anti-fascist (etc) or "for Rose to write this article, the only way the argument works is to forget the existence of the fediverse."
To me it's more that she's focusing on the activities that aren't helpful (on any platform) and ignoring the ones that are organizing and building power on social networks, complementing real-world organizing. But it's not a fedi-specific oversight; she also doesn't mention Blacksky, or the role that social networks can play in complementing locally-based mutual aid efforts), but that's not tied to a particular network -- several local organizing projects countering Moms for Liberty in Washington have leveraged Facebook effectively.
@emma to your question about tools: Bluesky's tools aren't that much better in general and for that matter there's plenty of anti-Blackness, anti Indigenaity, anti-trans bigotry, etc there too -- I'm not holding them out as a model in general. To the extent that it's a better option than fedi for many Black people, it's largely due to a cople of things: the efforts Aveta made recruiting Black people there at a very early stage led to enough critical mass that's persisted despite the company's anti-Blackness (a similar dynamic to Twitter); and, Blacksky has so much value that a lot of Balck Twitter moved there en masse -- along with a compelling vision for the future direction.
Still, there are some useful improvements: reply controls (which GoToSocial has and Mastodon has said they'll introduce at some point although not until after quote posts) and feed generatlors (whcih would need to be done in an opt-in way here on fedi but that's certainly possible). The packaging of starter packs also makes it a lot easier for newcomers to find people although the implementation is flawed (no consent or notification) so it has some big downsides as well.
But then again, Bluesky (like fedi) also doesn't have the ability to make accounts private. The moderation UI (for people running their own labelers) sucks and they haven't improved it muh over the last year. Safety relies on shared individual-blocklists which on the one hand are useful but on the other hand reproduce all the problems of blocklists from other platforms so also have huge downsides. So like I say I'm not holding it out as a model! But there certainly is stuff there to learn from.

Wake the F*ck Up—The U.S. Is Committing Trans Genocide, and It Won’t Stop There
Every genocide and fascist movement in modern history has followed a pattern. It never starts with mass killings. It starts with dehumanization, legal restrictions, and social exclusion. It starts with the most vulnerable group—the one society already marginalizes. And every single time, that group has been trans people.

Could there be support for uploading stories some day? If not here on PixelFed then in Loops maybe?
Worked well for me.
After Import I was disappointed on seeing that the posts did not show up in my Profile.
However, when I went back to Import to check I saw a message that 67 posts were waiting to be processed.
Half an hour or so later the message had changed to Imported Posts with a button to Review Posts, and then the posts also showed up in my profile.
Thanx a million.

The era of #Mastodon being “small and comfy” is now over.
Because the #SocialWeb is the only space where actual decentralization of social media happens, and to that end, it’s time we invite actual marginalized people over here – regardless of whether they’re a “cultural fit”.
Why? Because #Russia is demanding that Elon Musk hand over names of dissidents, and it’s highly likely he will do it.
This isn’t the only time state actors have made this demand, but Big Social is now happily acceding to them.
Some folks believe that my advocacy of a bigger Social Web makes me a dirty capitalist. On the contrary, allowing the likes of #Facebook and #Twitter to own the public square is actual capitalism. Surveillance capitalism at that.
The power of a social network is only as good as its network effect. If Mastodon remains small, its impact will be minimal. But if it’s large? Then true democracy might just be preserved.

#Mastodon is being more blatant—it will add quote posts.
This will piss some people off but frankly, this has been in the works for years.
To those who believe quote posts are abusive, there is no data whatsoever that shows any correlation between quote posts and abuse.
And actually, platforms like #Misskey, #Akkoma, and #Friendica have had that feature for years, and hardly anyone using those platforms has ever complained.
In fact, I use quote posts every day. No one’s complained to me about my use of quote posts.
Nevertheless, Mastodon is doing the right thing—and it takes serious courage to tell the Fedi Gatekeepers that this will happen. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth. But it’s a change that needed to happen.

@mjr I saw a study that said specifically there is no correlation. That study was made in 2022. Unfortunately, I can’t find that specific study so I’m not going to cite it.
Whatever the case, though, it’s on people making a claim to prove their claims.
Regarding what you saw on Twitter, that’s easily explainable: Twitter’s algorithm was incentivized to show you outrageous content. It’s unlikely that quotes caused dogpiles – it was more likely due to the feed algorithm.
@mjr Actually, I found a reference to the study:
absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/…
The first myth to dispense with: That there’s almost no research on quote tweets! I added to this misconception with my December…Hilda Bastian (Absolutely Maybe)
yes, it’s on people making a claim to prove their claims. Those claiming quote posts are safe should prove it.
I'm pretty sure Twitter quote posts were added way back when we still had chronological feeds and they were a problem pretty much as soon as people realised they didn't count as mentions.
@mjr No one is claiming that quote posts are safe. The claim is that there’s no evidence that they’re more unsafe than other social media features.
Tell me why hashtags are more safe than quote posts. Hashtags, just like quote posts, increase visibility of messages on social media. Yet no one is asking that hashtags be removed as a feature because they’re abusive.
@mjr
From the linked article:
In order to mitigate these issues, we plan to include several features in our implementation:
-You will be able to choose whether your posts can be quoted at all.
-You will be notified when someone quotes you.
-You will be able to withdraw your post from the quoted context at any time.
We also want to build a tight integration for Quote Posts with the reporting functionality, to help people to feel more safe.

I would love to lock a thread if I feel they’re attracting abuse. Or even remove comments if they’re toxic. However, Mastodon doesn’t allow this right now.
I’ve requested comment controls for years, and I have no update on whether they plan to do anything about implementing that.
@tchambers
“To those who believe quote posts are abusive, there is no data whatsoever that shows any correlation between quote posts and abuse. “
there is no conclusive data; that’s not the same as saying there is no data whatsoever….
@UlrikeHahn @tchambers What you’re quoting implies that culture has a bigger effect on incivility. Which seems pretty common sense to me.

The entire Tumblr culture is built on quote posts. Actually, Tumblr encourage quote post chains and some of the highest peaks of creativity in the platform had been achieved by half a dozen people quoting everyone else before them in the reblog chain.
Still, Tumblr is, generally, far less toxic than even Mastodon

There's been a lot of study on this, and QTs just do not contribute significantly to harassment and abuse. But even if they did, the affordances here are different. Followers-only replies are a *much* larger concern than quote posts.

@jenniferplusplus Yep, three years ago, I put in a feature request on Mastodon for comment controls. It’s pretty common sense to have since, yeah, it would cut down on abuse drastically. Haven’t heard anything back from Mastodon, but I certainly got a lot of angry people who demand that this never be implemented.
At the very least, you should be able to opt out of receiving comments. Still not here, but at least Mastodon allows you to opt out of quote posts. Now if only they would allow this for comments.
That's true, but Javi's right that Mastodon's longstanding opposition to quote posts (from 2017-2023) was not based on reality. My take on it is that it was primarily due to Eugen's racist (and incorrect) belief that quoting "inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours." -- see Black Twitter, quoting, and white views of toxicity on Mastodon for a deep dive.
In early 2023 Mastodon changed their position and put quote posts on the roadmap, got a grant for it in early 2024, and started work on it in later 2024. Better late than never! Unfortunately, the ongoing discourse from people claiming that quote tweets lead to incivility -- which is not in general borne out by the research (see @hildabast's excellent Quote Tweeting: Over 30 Studies Dispel Some Myths for a roundup) [1]-- continues to reinforce Mastodon's reputation for racism.
At this point I think Mastodon's doing the right thing by looking to implement it with safeguards (both because there's so much pushback here for a consent-based model, and because Bluesky has set the bar and it would be pretty disastrous not to at least match that). My impression is that the Misskey et al implementation also doesn't have the features that most people associate with quote tweets, for example the ability to see who's quoted a post (again something that Bluesky provides). Unfortunately, doing it right on the Mastodon code base turned out to be even more complicated than they originally thought.
And, it's a great point about interacting with other features: when I threat modeled quote posts, my takeaway was that one of the key defenses against abuse is the ability to make your profile private ... which Mastodon doesn't have. (Bluesky doesn't have this functionality either, and it's probably the most-requiested functionality from Black users there.). So we'll see how it winds up working out.
[1] For more on the study that did purport to showa relationship between quote tweets and incivility and intolerance, see neuromatch.social/@jdp23/11402…
Does quoting really cause toxicity?Jon (The Nexus Of Privacy)
@UlrikeHahn I also find the debate about quote posts depressing, and there's no question the place is the worse for it: more a few Black people I've talked to point to it as one of their reasons for seeing Mastodon as racist (and in many cases leaving).I agree that understanding the affordances of design features is imporant, and like I said in another reply there's an interesting open (as far as I know) question about whether the commentary goes before vs. after the quote.. But I also think that it's very important to take into account that different definitions of "toxicity" often embed societal biases power vectors.
I hadn't seen the whole thread -- Chris blocked me a while ago* -- but I'd be very careful about citing that thesis as evidence that quote posts lead to abuse or toxcicity. The author manually classified tweets in terms of incivility and intolerance.
Critieria for"incivility" (p 241) include accusing someone lying or spreading disinformation (whether or not they actually *are* lying or spreading disinformation), "disparaging remarks directed at political ideas, policies" (whether or not the ideas and policies are racist, misogynistic, illegal, etc), or cursing. sarcasm, and irony.
Criteria for intolerance include "saying that a certain group of people shouldn’t have a say or vote in a social issue").
So here are examples of tweets the author classified as intolerant (p.96):
"‘It still bugs me that men have the right to vote for what women should do with
their bodies but anyway, get it over and done""You have no uterus, no womb and no vagina. Why should I care about your opinion on Planned Parenthood?"
"Over the past 30 years, I have attended many large political gatherings, most of
which were predominantly male and stale. I’ve never seen anything as fresh and female as this campaign."Your mileage may vary, but I don't see posts like that as problematic.
El Duvelle reshared this.
Also there's an interesting open (as far as I know) question about differences between Tumblr-style quoting (with the commentary after the quoted text) as opposed to Twitter/Bluesky/Misskey-style quoting (with the commentary before the quoted text). I've heard suggestions that the Tumblr-style quoting leads to less toxcisity than Twitter-style... maybe so (although bear in mind that research didn't show that Twitter-style quoting is toxic, so maybe not). Then again putting the commentary before the quoted text is important for some key use cases like warning about misinfo (where you always want to lead with the truth, not the incorrect information) and calling out racism.
So it'll be interesting to see who Mastodon gets involved with their design. When they first mentioned they were working on this, I asked whether they were getting designed input by Black users and Black former users. The reply at the time was that they hadn't started working on it yet, fair enough, but now that they have it's still a big question!
Yeah but that's the thing: mastodon doesn't support quote post for mastodon users.
The rest of the fediverse have been able to quote mastodon posts for years. And since mastodon dones't support quotes, mastodon users aren't even aware of when someone quotes one of their posts. So any side effect quote posts could have... It's already here, since they already exist

Using the market to exploit us and state violence to control us, Elon Musk and Donald Trump are trying to consolidate power in the hands of a billionaire elite. They want to establish a totalitarian dystopia in which artificial intelligence does away with our livelihoods while killer robots keep us in line. By targeting undocumented people and trans people, they hope to channel anger towards those who are most vulnerable while they get away with murder.
Neither the Democrats nor the court system will help us. The Democrats identified Trump as a fascist, then welcomed him into office. Trump already controls the highest court in the land; his lackeys dominate the legislative branch. The only thing that could stop them is widespread resistance.
Get together with the people that you trust. Build networks with others who feel the way you feel. Identify weak points in the ruling order and look for ways to go on the offensive.
When Trump tried to impose the Muslim ban in 2017, thousands blocked airports across the country. When millions filled the streets in 2020, Trump lost. We can’t vote out an unelected authoritarian billionaire, but we can deal with Elon Musk by cutting off his profits at the source.

In conclusion, the apparent extinction of B/Yam is a positive outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic, possibly leading to fewer influenza B infections and allowing an opportunity for more flexibility in the way we approach influenza vaccine manufacture. Furthermore, while there is only a low risk that B/Yam viruses could be re-introduced to the global population, the impact of such an event is likely to be relatively minor and manageable. Nevertheless, scientists and laboratories should minimise the use and exposure of staff to samples and isolates containing B/Yam viruses and prepare for removal of stored viruses from general access, to help mitigate any chance of re-emergence of B/Yam viruses. A reassessment or review by an international panel should be convened in about 10 years to re-examine the handling and storage of B/Yam virus stocks in laboratories. How the absence of B/Yam affects the epidemiology and evolution of human influenza viruses in the longer term remains to be seen, but as far as the basics are concerned, it is unlikely to herald the future disappearance of B/Vic viruses or one of the two influenza A viruses that currently infect mankind. Whether a divergent influenza B virus emerges in the future, repeating the 1970’s influenza B virus split, is unknown but should be the focus of continued careful surveillance.
Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the number of influenza viruses circulating globally fell to historically low numbers.Nature

Friendica beginner help megathread
Hello, everyone! As we know what Zuck's original project is going through, I decided to create a post with all the resources I found online all these years I've been on this place, in a bid to help more people board. Here we go:List of guides/presentations/quick start
- @anubis2814's excelent guides for Friendica. Available as a playlist on YouTube:
youtube.com/watch?v=-4wsAmXnaE…
or on Peertube:
peertube.stream/w/p/4K4MWYXMEY…
(6 videos)- The Future of Social is Here: a Show and Tell (part 3: Friendica) by @[url=https://friendica.world/profile/lenaknight]Elena[/url] Rossini ⁂
- The Beginner’s guide to Friendica by @Tio
- When to use Friendica over Mastodon (updated) by @Greenpepper
- no less important, The Friendica Wiki also available under the help section of your instance (click on your pic and name on the top-right where you're logged in -> help)
- The @[url=https://friendica.world/profile/friendicasupport]Friendica[/url] Support group for any questions or issues (yes, I intended to post this here).
All of these should be more comprehensive than this guide.
Short Q&A with the most common problems
How do I post stuff?
Easy, on your profile, click the button in the top right that looks like this:
A pop-up window will open, and you can type anything. Make sure to set the appropriate permissions by clicking the tab at the top. If you want your post to be public then choose public, if you don't, select limited/private and add the exceptions or add who can see it. Make sure you properly select these permissions, because you cannot change them later. If you format your post (see below), you can also check the preview pane to see how your post will look. This also applies for comments.
How to format my text?
Unlike Facebook, Friendica allows you to format your text, just like you'd do in a Word document. It uses BBCodes for text formatting like bold text, italic text, underlined text and many others. You can find more example on the usage of it in the Wiki or under
https://your-instance-address/help/bbcode. You don't have to style your text, but you can do some nice stuff with it. You can also get suggestions for formatting by typing[and selecting an option from the drop-down menu, or typing out your option to narrow your search. But do check the wiki, though. Generally, BBCode looks like[option]your-text-here[/option].If there is any text where you don't want to add any tags on by accident, slide it between these tags:
[noparse][/noparse].How to upload an image (and how to add alt-text to it)
Just drag&drop it into the composing page. Simple. Easy. No frills. Also, to note is that you can also re-use an image you previously uploaded if you go to the Browser tab in the compose window.
Finally, you can link to any image you find online, without downloading&reuploading it in the 1st place. Right-click an image, click "copy image link", then go to your post and type
[img]paste-your image-link-here[/img](of course, you paste your image link instead, between theimgtags). This is generally how images are displayed via BBCode.I personally use an external site to host my media and link it this way, whenever there is something I want on the internet for as long as possible in order to save some space on my instance. I mostly use postimages.org, but I also used
Meta and now also Reddit like to change the URL string to the media posted on their platforms, so don't rely on these if you want your post to still stay relevant after a few days.
You can also add Alt-Text to your image if, instead, you type
[img=your_image_url]Your Alt-Text here[/img]. Alt-Text is generally an image description that is displayed when the image fails to load/before loading, and is useful to visually impaired people using screen reading software which can read this out loud. The latter is the reason why it is highly recommended by many people all across the Fediverse (not just on Friendica). How to upload a video or other media
Just like you do with an image. However, the video will be posted under Browser, and then the "Files" icon:
Select your file, and it will be posted with an tag.
However, there's currently no user facing way to delete these as yet, so feel free to upload them on any other external service and share the direct link to the audio/video if you care about this.
You can use the tags
[audio]your-link-to-the-audio[/audio]and[video]your-link-to-the-video[/video]for that.How do I make a poll/vote at polls
Polls are currently supported by a few Fediverse platforms, but not by Friendica fully, right now (you can see them, but you cannot vote on them and create them). You can again use an external service for creating polls, such as poll-maker or Strawpoll.
Okay, but do I need to add a title?
No, you don't. I didn't add one either here. You can if you want your post to be more fancy and want to turn your profile into a more of a personal blog. Which would be cool, but it's not necessary. You do you!
How to post to a group
Groups on Friendica, as well as any other ActivityPub platform, are generally just some special accounts that automatically boost/reshare whatever post you added while tagging them. Therefore, just create a regular post and tag them with the
!or@signs (one of these tags should suffice). The former one creates a post that is visible on the group but unlisted wherever else (i.e. in a public feed). The latter takes account of your permission settings. You will see how you can find groups somewhere below. How to find various people
There are multiple ways; One is to use any of the established lists:
- Fedi.db's list
- Most followed Mastodon accounts by Stefan Hayden
- Fliboard federated accounts (for news organizations on Flipboard who enabled AP integration) [Google Sheet spreadsheet]
- [Public] Popular/famous/notable Mastodon accounts (also available as a website) [Google Sheet spreadsheet]
- The Friendica directory (only for people on Friendica)
- Follow @[url=https://social.growyourown.services/users/FediFollows]FediFollows[/url] 🎅 for suggestion
You can also go to Settings>Profile>Miscellaneous and scroll all the way down to add some tags to the profile. Then, you can also go to Contacts and choose "similar interests" in the left pane, get friend suggestions or a random profile.
Finally, you can also follow hashtags to get posts from people that also share your interests directly in your feed, and then follow them from there.
I'm posting stuff here, but how can people discover me?
Just like on Mastodon, you can enhance your posts with #hashtags. Other people who follow the same hashtags can find you and connect with you if they want.
But that's not the only way. You can also add yourself into the aforementioned Friendica Directory or to your server's one by going to Settings>Account>Security and Privacy Settings and check any of these two options:
This way, anyone can find you, depending on the public keywords that you set under Settings>Profile>Miscellaneous.
If, however you would like more privacy, you can check the following box below:
This limits the visibility of your content to only instances that are made aware of it, and people that have access to it based on your privacy settings. Unlogged users will not be allowed to find your content. E.g., open my profile in a new tab to see how this feature works: libranet.de/profile/petrescatr…
How do I find groups?
Same as with regular people. There are multiple lists:
- Friendica Directory (for groups that are on Friendica).
- Check the list of @[url=https://fedi.tips/feed/]Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse[/url] 🎄 available here.
- Lemmyverse (For Communities on Lemmy - a decentralized Lemmy alternative - be wary of this though)
- Check out the servers of other Fediverse software like Mbin or Piefed. These are more forum-like platforms, centered around communities. Generally, each of these communities has a Fediverse address. Copy that, paste it in the search bar, and you should be able to find it. If it doesn't work the 1st time, try a few more times. If it still doesn't work, look whether the server is not on the banned list by accessing
your-server-address/friendica, and/or contact your admin for clarification. How do I use the search? Is it any useful beyond just searching for people and groups and other accounts?
Yes. Check the Wiki for more information.
Are there any mobile apps?
Yes there are. From my personal experience, Raccoon for Friendica gave me the best results. Relatica is also a great option, as well as Fedilab (the latter is more of a Mastodon client, but you can disable the display of reply in the feeds and enable BBCode - fiddle out in the settings). There are other apps for various platforms as well. If you don't find any of them fitting, you can just access your Friendica server in your browser (e.g. friendica.world, nerdica.net etc.). It's very responsive and easy to use.
I hope this Q&A covers the most common aspects of using Friendica
Other types of resources
- Bookface (server version, Stylus version) by @[url=https://kolektiva.social/users/Kristi]Kristi[/url] H. (also follow @Pygoscelis Papua for updates)
Bonus: Text colorsOne aspect that hasn't really been touched on in the wiki is the colors. You can have text in any color if you type the text like this[color=color_name_or_value]your text here[/color]. Hex values are accepted, however there are also some human readable names that can be used (based on this thread):

Years ago I used to recommend a Fedi platform called Lemmy. However, in 2021 some very disturbing stuff about Lemmy's developers came out which totally changed my mind. Because of this, I did a thread to warn people about Lemmy and then never mentioned them again.
Today a mod on this account's old server deleted the 2021 thread, without any explanation but apparently by mistake. If you're looking for the thread, it's on the Internet Archive:

As someone who did data quality stuff as a fedgov contractor, there are a lot of things you think you find that appear to be nightmare-worthy, but a lot of them end up being false positives because you are missing context. Hunting for a relevant SME and figuring out how things actually work is how we would resolve our issues a lot of the time. Other times it would be real, and then it was all hands on deck until it was sorted out.

This account has it all. Crows. Long, boring stories about passwords.
I'm going big numbers for sure.
Had the strangest experience setting up this #Friendica account. So, when you create an account you're assigned a password and then encouraged (but not prompted tsk tsk) to change it.
So I hit up that url, copy/paste the password from the email and I'm in. Huzzah! Login info saved to the password manager. Go to change the password... and it fails: 'Login failed', 'password unchanged.' It's copying from the password manager but still failing again and again. I log out and log back in with the password manager. No problem, I'm in. Huzzah! Yet changing passwords fails and so does setting up 2fa. It's the right password to log into the account but the wrong password for the 'current password' field. What's your deal, website?!
I confirm that the password matches the email. Copy from the passwd manager and of course it fails. I'm about ready to toss this laptop into the sea. Know what? This happened to me the last time I tried out Friendica - and I threw that account into the sea. It has only ever happened on Friendica -- and I tried multiple password managers and browsers. So I guess this is life now. No one try to hack me, even though it'd be super easy.
Just kidding, I copied directly from the email and it worked. WHY.
Anyway, I kinda like this place. Thinking about sticking around for a while 😀
