(The NAACP has likely spoken with people at these organizations and found no common ground. They kind of hate calling for corporate boycotts so I can only imagine they go nowhere and were disgusted.)
It's been a really long time since they've called for this kind of boycott, and while I could make their list much longer, or expand the reasons, I'm happy to see a huge stable organization not sitting on their hands and not avoiding big targets.

Agreed. But NAACP is explicitly not using the word "boycott." And I suppose they are not including Target because that company supports several Black businesses.
It's easy to boycott MacDonald's. Meta a bit harder until you can get your tribe to move. And Walmart? I used to not shop there, but I'm already boycotting Amazon, so that leaves me with the problematic Target.

When I went to the web site, I found three companies being identified as bad and three being promoted as good. Is the list intentionally that small, or is that bad web site UX? I expected there would be many other bad actors.
I'm on board with the McDonald's and Meta boycotts. I spend as little money at Walmart as possible, but when you live in the sticks, sometimes it's the only option.
My branch of the NAACP expressly stated they are not boycotting. I suspect that this more about being sued by the companies than making a statement. Let's face the facts. Walmart and Boeing have a lot more money to offer lawyers than the NAACP. That is the threat the NAACP is confronting.
That does not mean that we, you, me or anyone can't make a list of anti DEI companies and act on our own initiative. Personally, I never liked going to McDonald's. Even when it was convenient.

@EverydayMoggie Yeah, that's the thing. I still need to finish deleting my Facebook account, but I'm done using anything Meta, and I never shop at Walmart or eat McDonald's....but obviously a *lot* of people do, so that means a lot of people should be able to participate!
I haven't eaten at McDonald's in more than a decade. I stopped using Meta because of their DEI and moderation changes. Boycotting Walmart completely isn't really an option because they have a monopoly in this town on certain things our family needs, and they're the only pharmacy that has the supply chain to reliably provide my "you could (theoretically) die if you miss a dose of this" drug. (All of my other prescriptions are filled at a local independent pharmacy.)

I really hope they figure out the issue on this instance soon. It's been down every night for the last week. It wouldn't be that big a deal if I lived near the server where this occurs at 3am (and I'm assuming the admin is asleep). It's 6pm-midnight here though. And it is getting old.

What worries me with YunoHost is the implications of an easier point of entry for self hosting. Someone more experienced could run MySQL and MariaDB on the same server, create docker instances of either or find other possibilities to run it, without depending on Yunohost volunteers.
Having an easy point of entry is good, but it poses it's own risk. And someone with less experience might not be able to evaluate those risks when they want to want support something long term.
odd. i'll need to look onto their reasoning behind "not supporting" mariadb. it's supposed to be a drop-in replacement for mysql for those that want nothing to do with oracle
@jarek from what i've seen so far, it's because the dev team like mysql. which, as you said, fine. it just removes them as an option for me. the amount of oracle licensed code i want on my server is none
@leberschnitzel that's true, but if you run Yunohost installed on a server or VPS running Debian, you can still run Docker with your custom apps and just use Yunohost to set up reverse proxy and certificate management! From a purist POV may not be enough, but it gives plenty of possibilities beyond the capabilities of Yunohost volunteers!

I set up a pixelfed instance for my website on a host, but decided I wanted to self host, so I bought a high end router and port forwarded the connection for my domain name to my PC where I am running virtual box Ubuntu LAMP stack vm to serve out my websites. What happens when you run "sudo mysql" ?
If it opens and connects, then it's still using socket-based authentication. Then I would manually run the ALTER, FLUSH, and exit. Then try to restart ghost.
If it doesn't open, but asks for the password, and the password works, then this change in the authentication method already was done and the problem isn't this particular step. Does ghost doctor provide any diagnostics?
This is what self-hosting is about. Living in a cloud of confusion because you're dealing with a bunch of different tech, none of which you'd ever be able to become an expert in. So, there's a lot of trial and error. This is so familiar. And the fun of it.
The ALTER statement format, I believe, is wrong. It is showing single quotes around "mysql_native_password" which makes it a literal string. But, IDENTIFIED WITH specifies the name of the authentication plugin, not a string. Can you try instead:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED WITH mysql_native_password BY '<your-new-root-password>';
The thing about boycotts is that they only work when they've got enough same-minded people to be effective.

While a lot of the data I've targeted is arguably US-specific, there is a big, neatly-organized corpus of global upper atmosphere soundings for the National Weather Service's entire period of record, available from the fine folks at the NCEI.
It needs organisation. I'd like to help. I could get a big external drive tomorrow and start seeding torrents from Germany if I had any idea what data I should be seeding.
Presumably any attempt at public mobilisation is vulnerable to far right trolling. I made a possibly naive suggestion to minimise such trolling by keeping the set of people moderating datasets constrained to those who care about them the most.

Books will not even be safe on your devices if these use gafams OSes (they could in a next move scan the hard drives and delete cultural artefacts that are against their own political beliefs and/or interests). @grs @CosmicTraveler I normally take 54mg of time-release methylphenidate (Ritalin/Concerta). I've found that 100mg (a half pill) of modafinil/provigil works equally well for me. I live in europe and I was devastated reading about this last night. Was unable to finish the article, unable to endure the ableism of what it describes.
I have ADHD myself and was also treated for depression almost a decade now until october last year when we were finally at the point to put me off SSRI.
I look forward to tech workplaces becoming even more disorganized and chaotic since, you know, so many people that specialized in executive function roles were laid off because it was deemed unnecessary.

At a glance we might seem like 'small fish' in comparison to the entire tech sector, but the cultural ripples of declining quantity and quality of live events and performance would be insidious. I'm not in the tech sector, and I'm cis. But I'm also a depressed and anxious neurosparkly, so can speak to that part. Society truly does not give us due credit for the massive creative work we do in the background of practically everything. Every business, every organization, every institution, every demographic. Strip us of our meds and/or our freedoms by sending us to "health camps," and what holds everything together will just kind of crumble and wither away.

Having time and space to deal with trauma may cure or at least mitigate some poor mental health. There is some evidence that poor diet can at least exacerbate it too (that's been my lived experience).
Will these wellness camps be voluntary? I can imagine worse places to be placed under a compulsory treatment order (think One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), but rural camps could be much more difficult for family and friends to visit. Reducing the mental health benefits and informal oversight of care that comes with such visits.
What will they cost? Will this contribute to health-related debt for people who don't have insurance, or when the companies can avoid paying out?

It's easy to boycott MacDonald's. Meta a bit harder until you can get your tribe to move. And Walmart? I used to not shop there, but I'm already boycotting Amazon, so that leaves me with the problematic Target.
We've nearly waited too late to boycott the few retail stores we have left. So for me it's a work in progress.

Let's face the facts. Walmart and Boeing have a lot more money to offer lawyers than the NAACP. That is the threat the NAACP is confronting.
That does not mean that we, you, me or anyone can't make a list of anti DEI companies and act on our own initiative. Personally, I never liked going to McDonald's. Even when it was convenient.
