Warst Du mal auf "The Last Continent" in the Discworld?

The EU is gearing up for a historic shift:
In 2026, a new legislative package is set to be introduced, aiming to drastically reduce dependence on foreign tech in AI, cloud infrastructure, and semiconductors.
The goal?
Public institutions should prioritize European open-source solutions—similar to for example Schleswig-Holstein’s open-source approach, but EU-wide.
Why this could be a game-changer:
✅ Less US dominance: If adopted, authorities would have to choose providers fully under EU control—with transparent data flows and local servers.
✅ Open source in focus: The EU recognizes open standards as key to digital sovereignty and is planning to fund European alternatives—from cloud solutions to AI, and even community platforms like friendi.ca.
✅ Municipalities could lead: Cities and towns could set up their own servers (for email, collaboration, social network or local services) with potential EU support.
Europe’s digital independence is on the rise ☀️

Genuine curiosity as a digital sovereignty watcher: do you have a source?
The EU has been talking about digital sovereignty for 5 or 6 years but what they mean is "European Big Tech". They are still committed to SaaS.
Specific countries - France, Luxembourg, some parts of Germany and Denmark - have a different approach of bringing core function back in house and dropping SaaS as much as possible.
If the EU was pivoting to that approach it would be HUGE.

Most of the time, it's a lazy version. I grab a cast iron skillet, put olive oil in, and turn the heat to medium high, then make a spice mix based on smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, cumin, salt, and a touch of MSG, then grab a tin of peeled tomatoes and mash them with a potato masher.
Then I dice an onion and throw it in the skillet, followed by adding a diced paprika (bell pepper, or capsicum, for other cultures), and then I often add some beans and other vegetables that I have left around.
Add the spices to the sauteing veggies, and stir well, then add the mashed tomato, and then add a few gloves of garlic. Let that sit for a while, then turn off the heat a bit. A minute or two after the heat is turned off, dig holes in the mixture, and add eggs with an intact yoke in those holes. Then add a bit of water, and turn the heat back to medium-low and put a lid on.
Once the eggs are in the desired state (for me this means solid whites with gooey yolk), sprinkle grated parmesan on top, and eat straight out of the pan. Add some bread if desired.

I'm one of those bastards who often skips breakfast and just have a nice matcha in the morning instead. When I did partake in brekkie it was usually overnight oats. When I lived in the U.S., my breakfast of choice was orange juice and Dannon coffee yogurt. (Specifically that brand and flavour.)
Here in N.Z., coffee yogurt is not a thing, so now I drink coffee and it's usually a soft-boiled egg with a couple pieces of fruit (bananas, mandarins, or sliced apples depending on season). There used to be a cafe across the street from work that made "rosti" - basically bacon and egg on hashed potatoes - it was amazing.
As favourite breakfasts go though, I have all sorts of nostalgia associated with a typical breakfast in Taipei - soymilk soup, deep fried donuty sticks, and sesame buns.

Hard question to answer for me.
I would say friendly and welcoming overall. Moldavian wine is what our country pride, landscape consisting of hills so you can have easy or painful time as bicyclist. Lots of Russian speaking so Russian and Romanian are interchangeable for young folks. We have divide with Transnistrea (which is basically enclave of pro Russian self appointed government) so there always fear of being consumed either by Romania (sell our country) or Russia (will take as granted). Fears changed before and after war of course, but russian propaganda still strong(lots of money flows for organised protests against government).
Yeah, thought whole night but not an easy question to answer. If you are historical buff then you will find lots of places to visit.

Well, it started from a conversation with @TheBreadmonkey about where it seems most people are from whom we engage with. And then I was going to do a poll, but I didn’t know which countries to include (all of them???) and I felt lazy. And then I thought, “Just asking people where they’re from is kind of boring. Maybe I’ll ask about breakfast too.” I am fascinated by how different all of our breakfasts can be.

If I’m at home I’m a weirdo and like to assemble a wrap with spinach, hummus, cheese, mustard, and deli meat.
@Saltssaltgirl I like some Life cereal covered in the blood of my enemies in a skull bowl. Sometimes I’ll have eggs sprinkled with tears of despair and rabbit’s foot powder.
No, not really. I wrote some stuff here: beige.party/@LoganFive/1161871…
I feel quite boring compared to a lot of people. I’m still shocked how many people only have coffee for breakfast.
@zenbeater I don’t know if it’s my favorite but I eat scrambled eggs and toast quite often. I honestly like cereal a lot - a big bowl of Life Cereal and almond milk. But it’s so much sugar and I know I don’t feel as good later on. But if we’re talking unhealthy breakfasts, chocolate chip waffles and bananas is another good one. When I was a kid I had a friend’s mom that would always make us these egg pitas. I loved them but I don’t know what she put in them.

Norway. For workdays, coffee is my breakfast, lunch and in-between snack most days. I might devour an egg if I feel like it.
On weekends - mostly because it's socially expected that I eat something for breakfast - some bread with cheese, ham, eggs and stuff like that, a glass of milk, OJ and coffee. Sometimes muesli.
I am in Adelaide, South Australia. I begin the day with 2 strong cups of English Breakfast tea. Other than that my breakfast varies a lot, but most often involves eggs - fried, scrambled or a 2-egg omelette with herbs.
My favourite breakfasts:

Oh yeah the Mexican food and the farmers market are great! Lots of good people here! But they're not the city, sadly. The mayor and his/her cronies shipped in from Texas are the only ones who get to be the "City of Hillsboro." Just go up Brookwood sometime to highway 26, you'll see the ugly side of this place. All that wasn't there 10 years ago.
I'd like at least something more like the Beaverton system, where the city council get to do something other than sit there and look pretty. But I'll even accept our current dictator mayor situation if it stops all these data centers from going up, tax-free on our dime. If you can't tell from the dripping sarcasm in my voice, the polar opposite of that is true.

--> Verantwortlichen direkt kontaktieren!
--> Bürgermeister:innen, Stadträte, Gemeindeverwaltungen, lokale Parteien anschreiben:

A break with symbolism:
For fear of sanctions, the International Criminal Court is replacing US technology with a package from Germany – and could thus be at the beginning of a trend.
(Christof Kerkmann,10/30/2025 - 04:06)
Düsseldorf. It is a decision with political explosiveness: out of fear of reprisals by US President Donald Trump, the International Criminal Court (ICC) plans to make itself independent of technologies from the USA. According to Handelsblatt information, the international institution in The Hague, the Netherlands, is replacing Microsoft's workplace software through the German Open Desk solution.
The program package that Microsoft is to replace comes from the Center for Digital Sovereignty (Zendis), a federal company. Its mission is to strengthen the digital independence of public administration by resolving “critical dependencies on individual technology providers”. Open Desk as a program package with components from eight European software manufacturers is a central element.

With proven open source components, the federal government-funded suite openDesk guides management out of Microsoft dependency.
Financed by the Federal Government, it has been in operation since October 2024. OpenDesk promises open source applications for digital collaboration under a unified interface. This includes word processing, spreadsheet, chat and video conferencing tools, cloud storage, a project management module, a wiki, and email, contact, and calendar features.
With the project, the federal government wants to reduce the dependence of the German authorities on US providers such as Microsoft.
- Enterprise version with self-hosting and SaaS
The individual components of the Office and Collaboration Suite are open source components of Collabora, Element, Nextcloud, Nordeck, Open-Xchange, Univention, Open Project and XWiki. In addition to the community edition of openDesk, version 1.0 is also an enterprise edition with two professional operating models: as a package for operation in your own data center (self-hosting) and as a software-as-a-service (SaaS). openDesk is to be run entirely as a Kubernetes-based cloud application, local installations are not required.
The IT service provider B1 Systems is to take care of the support of the self-hosting variant, the SaaS version comes from the German cloud provider StackIT. Last month, both companies were awarded the contract by ZenDis, which is behind Opendesk ("Centre for Digital Sovereignty of
Public Administration").
- A confident workplace instead of Microsoft
OpenDesk is based on an initiative by the government of the Federal Republic of Germany and nine federal states. They joined forces in November 2021 to reduce the public sector's dependence on US software under the then project name "Sovereign Workplace". ZenDiS, founded in 2022, coordinates the development of openDesk as a public GmbH on behalf of the Federal Government.
The Federal Government intends to provide ZenDiS with around 10 million euros for the further development of the suite in the current year. In previous years, the federal government has already invested around 35 million euros in the development of openDesk. The Microsoft 365 alternative also competes with the technically closely related Phoenix suite of the public North German IT service provider Dataport, which, however, is not completely open source and is currently only available as a software-as-a-service.

Edubuntu is a community effort that seeks to bring the freedom of the Linux desktop and the vast library of open source education software into the classroom.
* Edubuntu has been revived for thousands of educators and students. Here
are the best new features.
Edubuntu is a popular open source educational operating system based on Ubuntu Linux. It is primarily aimed at students and teachers and aims to be the “Linux distribution in the classroom” with a solid Ubuntu base.
The new version of Edubuntu includes exciting new features and updates that make it even more valuable for educators and students. This article explains the best new features of Edubuntu.
* Changes to the user interface with modern GNOME
However, the new interface is designed to provide a better user experience and make navigation in the system more accessible to students and teachers.
* Accessibility and settings update
GNOME desktop, by default, is much more improved on the Accessibility front with many settings. In GNOME 44, the entire accessibility settings page is revamped. It is now based on a friendly name instead of a generic list of controls. Edubuntu 23.04 definitely going to provide a good experience with GNOME 44 for students having special needs.
Furthermore, the output and input section on the sound page in settings is shuffled for better clarity.
* Education specific applications
The most critical aspect of this distro is the applications specific to education. The default set of applications in Edubuntu 23.04 is well packaged, considering all types of students and their grade levels.
For generic office work, LibreOffice 7.5 is included. Browsing the web is easier with secure Firefox (snap).
Students who need art-related applications can take advantage of the below set of default apps:
- GIMP raster drawing program
- Drawing – simple image editor (similar to MS Paint)
- Tux Paint – drawing program for beginners
- LibreCAD – Free and open-source computer-aided design app
- Inkscape – Vector drawing program
A well set of language and learning tools to help all students across grades. Here’s a list:
- Endeavor – GTK-based to-do manager
- Gobby – an excellent tool for collaborative document editing over a network
- Ulcc – teach children through pictures.
- Khangman and KWordquiz – to learn and teach new words
- PDFMod – PDF editor
-Calibre – e-book management
Furthermore, a few important apps which are specialised and are perfect for specific subjects learning are also included.
- Gramps – genealogical research application
- KGeography – to learn world map
- Fritzing – electronic circuit designer and simulator
A huge collection of science and math applications are already installed by default.
- Atomix – Puzzle game about atoms and molecules
- Chemtool – design chemical diagrams
- Kalzium – Learn periodic table
- Light speed – An OpenGL-based program developed to illustrate the effects of special relativity on the appearance of moving objects
- Rocs – Graph theory simulator
- Stellarium – free and open-source planetarium software
- Step – Interactive physics simulator
- Dia – diagramming application
- Kalgebra – learn algebra interactively
In addition, GNOME Extensions manager is pre-installed in Edubuntu for easy installation for extensions, taking the effort away from educators.
* Application controls for students
Since many applications and packages are installed, it’s necessary to have control in place to restrict certain apps for specific users. Edubuntu has a built-in menu editor. Using this utility, you can hide certain apps from the menu that are non-admin users.
* Hardware support and core changes
At the core, Edubuntu 23.04 is powered by the latest Linux Kernel 6.2. This brings all modern hardware, CPU, CPU, ports and file system support.
Python 3.11 is included as part of the Ubuntu base to help students to learn this popular programming language.
* Closing Notes
Edubuntu 23.04 is an excellent distro for educational purposes, and the new features and improvements in this release make it even more valuable for students and teachers. Terrifying Facts:
80% of native wild bees nest in dead plant stems.
A single stem can harbor up to 20 pollinator larvae.
Cutting back too early destroys six months of bee development.
Wild bees do pollination work worth €2000 per garden.
What really lives in your "messy" garden:
Hidden Dwellers:
- Mason Bee Cocoons
- Leaf Cutter Bee Nests
- Native wasp larvae
- Eggs of useful predatory insects
- Important areas that should be protected:
- Hollow plant stems
- Leaf pile
- Standing perennials
- Conjunctions
How you can help:
* Wait until May to clean the garden.
* Let the stems stand at least 40 cm high.
* Create piles of rice.
* Mark areas as pollinator zones.
Your action plan:
* Stop all clean-up work until the temperatures are constantly above 10°C.
* Bundle cut stems and store them securely.
* Set up "pollinator corners" in the garden.
* Educate neighbors about the importance of protection.
Natural gardens save bees – everyone can contribute!

European mobile payment system: WERO
The dependence on US tech companies, their software and cloud solutions is high.
There is a lot of talk about digital sovereignty in Europe.
Wero is a European mobile payment system that should replace Giropay in Germany, Paylib in France, Payconiq in Belgium and Luxembourg, and iDEAL in the Netherlands.
The service was launched on 2 July 2024 by the European Payments Initiative.
The service competes with PayPal, credit cards and similar services.
It started as a real-time payment system in 2024, and from summer 2025 extended online payment functions were added on a step-by-step basis.
The name is a portmanteau made up of the English personal pronoun we and the name of the European Union's common currency, the Euro, but is also based on the Italian word vero, meaning true.
Experience fast and secure digital payments with Wero’s wallet, enabling you to send and receive money between bank accounts in under 10 seconds.wero-wallet.eu
Reasons for Linux laptops?
- A Windows computer always has a higher price for the Windows license.
- Linux-Computers have been extensively tested for hardware compatibility. You can be sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will work in your system.
- By purchasing Linux laptops and desktops, Linux is indirectly supported. Higher sales indicate a demand for Linux products, and therefore more vendors may be inclined to offer Linux as the operating system of choice.
Here I list some online stores that sell Linux computers or specialize only in Linux systems.
