@Openvibe

Hello there!

I don't know if it is something that falls under the umbrella of what you want your app to accomplish, but:

Have y'all heard of Mangrove Reviews?

If so, is this something you would consider building support for in your app?

They are on the Fediverse: @Open Reviews Association

Hello my fellow #Fediverse #StarTrek fans.

Jeri Ryan, Robert Picardo, and LeVar Burton recently joined Bluesky. I've sent them a message to see if they would use the Bluesky bridge.

@George Takei :verified: 🏳️‍🌈🖖🏽 is also there, but he also posts here in the Fediverse.

I am able to follow them from my Friendica server, but I wanted to let yall know in case you would be interested in adding the bridge to your account. I know how some people feel about it, but this message isn't for you.

From our side you would follow @Bridgy Fed for Bluesky

It is an easy way to see where lights are already mapped, and what still needs to be covered. I do believe MapComplete has one as well.

Hello!

I just wanted to let you guys know that the server instability has improved so much. Whatever you guys are doing, if anything, has helped.

I know this is controversial in the Fediverse, but would you guys have any interest in installing the Bluesky addon on this server?

in reply to end0fline

Thanks! And please do let me know when you notice issues so we can look into them.

I will have a look at this Bluesky plugin.

in reply to end0fline

I installed the Bluesky addon. No idea how it works though.
in reply to Ruud

Cross posting works fine. I really appreciate it.

I have tried the "use Friendica handle as bsky domain" option, but it keeps failing when trying to upload a file to a .well-known endpoint on our server. If it helps, I tried at around 21:17 CST.

Just discovered this really great tool for PeerTube called Sepia Search. It’s a search engine that indexes PeerTube instances all in one place.

I tried it out and it immediately found my videos with logical key-phrases. And it’s super fast. It also enables filtering by video, channel, and playlist.

Has anyone ordered these "Firefly Petunias" before? They're by a company called Light Bio, and apparently the flowers glow in the dark.

I love plants and while this would be a cool addition, has anyone ordered one of these and found it to be a waste of money? Is there an ethical dilemma with ordering these?

light.bio

From Scientific American:

"The firefly petunia glows brightly and doesn’t need special food thanks to a group of genes from the bioluminescent mushroom Neonothopanus nambi. The fungus feeds its light-emitting reaction with the molecule caffeic acid, which terrestrial plants also happen to make. By inserting the mushroom genes into the petunia, researchers made it possible for the plant to produce enzymes that can convert caffeic acid into the light-emitting molecule luciferin and then recycle it back into caffeic acid — enabling sustained bioluminescence."

Two more PieFed instances

Recently there have been two more PieFed instances created, which offer accounts to anyone who wants one:

Feddit.online is hosted in USA which should make it a little faster for people there. It also has a different topic structure at feddit.online/topics than PieFed.social has.

in reply to Ademir

Roughly 2 GB of RAM, 2 cores of CPU. PieFed.social has 8 GB and 4 cores for 150 users and that is more than enough power. We haven't had a very busy instance with thousands of users so the only scaling tests have been to do with federation - "what happens if I join every community". The UI is very lightweight, tho.

It really depends how many communities you subscribe to. A single user instance might be able to use less.

in reply to SETI Institute

Sure we need more woman models in science (notably in computer science where we lack too much women compared to 30/40 years ago) and this one is a very nice, important and extraordinary one, but we also need, as it is the case with men, "normal" (ordinary) models in order to attract women back in our fields, so that they can identify and project themselves in science positions.

PieFed development update Oct/Nov 2024: key updates include the addition of community icons for better identification, a notification management interface, and various enhancements to our API for eventual mobile app support.

PieFed development update Oct/Nov 2024

Key updates include the addition of community icons for better identification, a notification management interface, and various enhancements to our API for eventual mobile app support. Below is a detailed overview of the changes we've made.

##Jeena

  • Community icon alongside name in post teaser. This helps differentiate between communities with the same name and adds visual interest.

##Freamon

  • Added a notification management interface to manage notifications from all the communities and posts you are subscribed to - piefed.social/alerts
  • Soft deletion of comments, so they can be un-deleted again.
  • Lots of API work for the mobile app. Lots!

#Rimu

  • Generate YouTube thumbnails more reliably.
  • Instance overview pages which make it easy to see posts and people from any instance. Start exploring at piefed.social/instances.
  • FEP-268d: Search consent signals for objects. This FEP is a convention for how instances can signal to other instances which posts should be searchable.
  • Track who deleted which posts, for accountability among moderators.
  • Refactoring to support API work by Freamon.
  • Automatically delete voting data older than 6 months (aggregated totals are unaffected). Voting data consumes gigabytes of space and it only meaningfully affects ranking of posts in the first few days. The only other reason to keep this data is for vote manipulation analysis and 6 months worth of data should be plenty.
  • Instances with open registrations automatically close registrations after one week of having no admins log in. This will avoid abandoned instances becoming a vector for spam or a home of trolls.
  • Show instance name after display name. If you notice undesirable patterns of behaviour associated with certain instances you can block the whole instance.
  • Improve visibility of user-level instance blocking functionality. This is separate and in addition to defederation which is controlled by admins.
  • Display PeerTube licence info on video posts. This could be rolled out to other post types in future?
  • Topics now have an option to show posts from communities that are in child topics. E.g. piefed.social/topic/arts-craft only has two communities in it so the number of posts shown there is very low. However it’s child topics (Arts, Craft and Photography) have quite a few communities so to populate the top-level topic it makes sense to display posts from all the child topics too. piefed.social/topic/tech/progr… is a similar case.

--

As a free and open source project, PieFed receives no funding and developers are not paid. Any donations you can spare will help cover server and infrastructure costs - piefed.social/donate. Thanks!

Hello, everyone. I am interested in using a mini pc with a power bank. However, my use case is a bit different from most. I am totally blind, so I don't need to worry about a monitor, mouse, or touchpad. My main goal is to get something portable and light-weight to carry in a fanny pack. I already do this with aGalaxy A15 and an iClever BK03 keyboard, but as good as Android 14 is with Talkback, I would like a truly small Windows pc. As much as I love umpcs, from what I understand, the current ones have strange keyboard layouts and many cost several hundreds or even thousands of dollars! I use Windows XP, 7, and 11 on both physical and virtual machines. I am interested in Debian Mate, but I can't seem to get it to work fully in a virtual machine, since it won't recognize shared folders or my thumb drives. Of the machines currently in use, the least powerful is my Aspire One D270 and the most powerful is my Latitude 3120 with a Pentium N6000 processor, 8gb of ram, and 128gb solid state drive. I want something that will at least equal or surpass this.

These are the programs I use. Keep in mind that I won't be using a monitor or mouse, nor do I engage in any graphically-entensive tasks or do any sorts of collaborations with others, use cloud storage, etc.

NVDA (screen reader, all versions of Windows)
Firefox (115 on Windows 7 and latest on Windows 11), Serpent UXP Firefox fork that works with Xp and up/still updated), Supermium (fully modern fork of Chrome for XP and up
Notepad2 or Jarte
MPCHC (light-weight media player)
Virtual Recorder v1.4.0.2 (very simple mp3 recorder)
Thunderbird (Legacy 102, Outlook Express
Cook Timer
KCleaner
Revo Uninstaller (much older version, modern one is not accessible)
Openbook (for ocr/used rarely)
VMWare Player 6.0.4 or Workstation 16

With that in mind, I am considering the MeLE PCG02 Pro with an N100 processor. Since it already has a 3.5mm jack, I wouldn't need to connect a usb adapter to use earbuds (Bluetooth audio doesn't work well with NVDA).

amazon.com/MeLE-PCG02-Pro-Comp…

I would pair this with a Energrid VS820PD 20,000mAh Power Bank.

accessibility.energrid.us.com/…

Would this computer and power bank meet my needs? If not, can you recommend others? Please do not recommend bare bones systems or converters/triggers. While I am comfortable with all sorts of software, I don't feel safe modifying hardware, since I can't see it and don't want to damage anything or get electricuted. At any rate, the thing I like about this power bank is that I could check the battery status, which is important, since the PCG02 Pro doesn't have an internal battery. At any rate, is 10,000mah enough for four to eight hours of use, or should I consider this one with 20,000 mah? The voltage and wattage seem to be compatible with the computer, unlike my current INIU power bank with only 22w output. Plus, it has powered USBc (pd 3.0) which esential for working with a mini pc, from what I've read.

I haven't been brave enough to try the CLI tool yet... I've only tried the web interface! It worked well with 999 pictures. I assume the CLI tool would be a bit faster?
in reply to end0fline

I’m not sure for faster. But once you’ve done the initial login (which is also very painless) you just give the path to the folder with the images you wanna upload and that’s it. The main benefit to me is being able to track progress easily and that you can resume uploads to the series in case your connection drops out!

The CLI tool is very sleek. Good upload status, colour use.
