I continue to be surprised by the rapidity of the GOP's shifting positions from

* "objective truth exists" -> political trolling/shitposting/disinfo
* anti-Soviet -> Putin bootlickers
* lipservice to the Constitution -> raw power plays
* law & order -> chaos and fashy-curious
* "family values" -> Trump
* "presidential character matters" -> Trump

My take at the moment is that some folks believed in the old positions but were losing the long game to "progress" / identity politics. So they adopted white xtian nationalist ID politics and beat the left at their own game. I suspect the Republic will not survive it.

Canada seeks stronger EU trade ties as both regions threatened by Trump tariffs

I hear Asia is seeking rare earth minerals and energy
in reply to Wooki

Right... unless US is going full Russia on Ukraine type situation.. what is the end goal here.

Canada was always a good hoe... then US goes and beats it anyway? What is the W?

US just looks mental aka "unreliable partner"

Canadians and their oligarchs would be stupid to not take notice here no matter how this resolves.

in reply to Wooki

Didn't we recently sign a major contract with Japan for natural gas? On top of the new natural gas facility we're building in BC?

Though I suspect that this relationship will only be good for a decade or two, becoming the #1 supplier of natural gas to eastern Asia will be good both from an economic and political stance, as that's the area that is likely to have the biggest economic impact on the world aside from India over the next half century.

in reply to Value Subtracted

Let me get this straight. Canada a country already over burdened with regulations with a faltering economy wants to join the EU an other over regulated market with faltering economy? No thanks
in reply to pouppa

Probably by fair trading without US oligarchs and its unhinged financial sector sucking up all profit derived from their respective countries. And hopefully with more equal wealth distribution not completely derailing nice infographics. Because the one above is utterly useless if what you care for actually is quality of life, not just numbers going up.
in reply to Natanox

We already have a major free trade agreement with the EU, and we're not burdened by their regulations on most resources that we want to export to them anyways.

This is different from those people who are talking about actually joining the EU. We're just shipping our raw resources (or preferably refined resources).

And frankly speaking, a lot of the US's growth comes from the fact that they've been taking advantage of their legacy infrastructure like 60 year old power plants, and the fact that we sell them oil and minerals at costs much lower than the world average. We redirect a ton of that to the EU and other countries, and the US's growth with drastically slow down while giving us huge growth as the profit margin of our products will rise substantially.

EU might not be as rich as the US, but it is still quite rich, and isn't about to collapse under its own weight like China. As economies go, they are literally the next best thing after the US, and their reliability makes them far more attractive partners for the next half century.

in reply to pouppa

Based on what the US has been doing over the past month, I'm not so sure your trend will continue like this. And in any case, the US is at best an unreliable trading partner, and at worst an enemy of Canada, so we need new trading partners. The EU seems like as good as any.

I mean, we have Vancouver that's cold in more of a damp way than an icy way, I guess. Unfortunately it costs way more too.

The recent downsizing of the CIA has also undercut the ability of the US to replace this reduction in supply.

I used to live in a deeply red area and now live in a very blue urban area and I can say that bible thumping republicans love their illicit narcotics almost more than the most leftist of hippies. Some of my stoner friends still refuse to believe that some of my farmer and blue collar friends could smoke them under the table without flinching. Cali weed is actually pretty bad compared to some of the stuff one of my friends cousins would bring from eastern Kentucky.

I used to wonder how Lex Luthor got such a stupid name growing up. Always wondered if the stupid name drove him into supervillainy.

Then “Elon Musk” came along…. and everything I ever wondered was confirmed.

@Benhm3 Oh no no no. Doge was a super popular meme that somehow became memecoin until Musk took interest, essentially bought it out (went on SNL and claimed it as his own) and ruined it. Now I’m very aware of the Doge culture in Venice, and I’m sure hell ruin that somehow, but the origin of the coin (and all this other stuff) is rooted in this meme you may remember:

@Benhm3 yeah I saw where he was leaning with Doge too. Very creepy era of Italian history with gross unchecked power. But to be honest… Americans are dumb and this is exactly what they wanted. Sadly.

Gonna still try to reclaim DOGE. til it’s time to leave the country. lmao.

I suspect he's going to use this rhetoric as a loophole to restrict birthright citizenship (it excludes children of invaders). It's obviously BS but that doesn't matter if it aids him in helping to pass laws required to do so.

Musk has reached the find out phase:

In Germany the January sales of electric cars grew 53.5 percent. But the sales of Teslas dropped 59 percent, leading to a decline in EV market share from previously 14 percent to now just 4.

Thank you Germany!

What is SAFER in this Time?

SAFER is Strategic Adaptation for Emergency Resilience

It is compiled & published by the Climate Majority Project, and is one of several recent documents that originate from academia that most major governments have failed to openly consider.

That our civilisation will soon become degraded progressively as unstoppable climatic effects begin overwhelming our systems of supply, on which our civilisation depends.

It is a long read, it is detailed and isn't laced with 'hopium' messaging, so is only for real grown ups!

That is why I post it here, not 'there' which is many places.
