Abenteuerwochenende für älteren Herren
Oste von Brauel – Ober Ochtenhausen – Pegel Rockstedt 711cm

Nach den frostig nebligen Winterausflügen auf Wümme und Ilme, treffen wir uns an diesem Wochenende im Norddeutschen Nichts zum paddeln auf der Oste. Am Freitag finden sich zwei von x geladenen bei mir ein und wir lassen es uns bei Currygemüse, Kranwasser und Geschichten von großen Taten gut gehen.
Viel zu lange dauert das übliche Palaver, so dass der Samstag Morgen mit zerknautschten Gesichtern und mäßiger Motivation beginnt. Doch schnell ist der Schmerz vergessen und nach einem feinen Sightseeing-Ausflug durch zwei Landkreise sitzen wir bereits um halb zwölf in den Booten.

Es ist trocken, die Sonne scheint und für den Tag sind kernige 62km/h Rückenwind angesagt. Es könnte schlimmer kommen, denn auch der Wasserstand ist trotz erbärmlich geringer Niederschläge in den letzten Wochen noch auf einem brauchbaren Level. Bevor wir in Brauel starten, outet sich R. als harte Sau und geht zunächst eine Runde schwimmen. Zwar im Trockenanzug aber trotzdem - *brrrr* da wird mir jetzt direkt nochmal kalt.

Die nächsten Stunden passiert nichts unerwartetes. Wir paddeln auf einem kleinen, meandernden Fluss mit moderater Strömung durch eine schöne, frühlingshafte und abwechslungsreiche Landschaft. Wie üblich wird ein bisschen gequatscht, gefachsimpelt und über Abwesende hergezogen. Die meiste Zeit werden jedoch Gegend und Wetter genossen. Begleitet werden wir von zahlreichen Stockenten, Nutriafamilien und Reihern die den den Weg säumen.
Etwas zu eifrig waren leider die Leute vom NLWKN (Niedersächsischer Landesbetrieb für Wasserwirtschaft, Küsten- und Naturschutz) die in Herbst und Winter nicht nur alle(!) Hindernisse aus dem Bach geräumt, sondern auch an den Ufern radikal für Kahlschlag gesorgt haben. Dadurch fehlen mir ein wenig die sonst üblichen Klettereinlagen. Auch die entfernten, sonst dicht zusammengewachsenen Weiden und die mit Maschinen zu Klump gefahrenen Ufer hinterlassen ein ungewohtes Bild.
Die Paddelei war also sehr entspannt und durchweg aufrecht sitzend möglich.

An der Pausenstelle haben wir uns mit A. verabredet der mit dem Fahrrad anreist. Auch hier Gelaber und natürlich ein bisschen was auf die Gabel. Thema sind u.a. abstürzende Airbus Flugtaxis, herausgefallene Boing Türen und Java Programmierung auf Satellitenhardware.
Nach insgesamt fünf Stunden beenden wir unsere Fahrt und sind rundum zufrieden mit dem Tag.

Den Sonntag beginnen wir etwas später aber nicht minder unmotiviert mit Coffee and Cigarettes(partiell). Nach einer ausgedehnten Auftauphase präsentiere ich den Jungs mit müden Knochen eine Runde Speerschleudern auf dem benachbarten Acker.
Anschliessend widmen wir uns einer Partie Pétanque. Also mehr Cross-Pétanque weil auf der Wiese. Zum Glück hat Mitbewohny L. ebenfalls Lust sich zu beteiligen und wir können doublette spielen.

Mit jeweils 13:2 schaffen R. und ich auch die Revanche souverän zu verkacken. Danach geht es dann ins Abklingbecken bis am Nachmittag S. & R. die Heimreise antreten.
Etwas wehmütig schaue ich ihnen nach ... *gähnt*

Today we are heading out on the Ilme, a 32.6 km long tributary of the Leine. To be allowed to paddle on the Ilme, you need a special permit from the district. Not a cheap pleasure, by the way; R pays €100 for the permit. We paddle 15.6 km from Dassel to Einbeck.

The narrow river has a fast current and lies in a relatively deeply incised bed with fairly homogeneous banks. Large eddies are rather rare. Numerous tree and bush obstacles, river bed slides and steps sweeten the paddling experience, but also require an alert mind and sometimes quick reactions. Even with my 10' long Detonator, it is not always easy to find a suitable eddy in time. R and A with their 13' and 14' long boats sometimes have real problems getting their boats in.

It is said that the Ilme is easily navigable from a water level of 70 cm. We cycle at a level of 77cm, but for the first 4km even that is really too little. We constantly touch down on the stony bottom or don't find enough space for the paddles to steer properly. From Ellersen onwards it gets noticeably better.
After an hour we take our first break and try to count how many times we have had to get out, climb, transfer or tow, but after the first three kilometers this is already a hopeless undertaking.

The first quieter section comes 2km later, just before the Buschmühle. Here we carry around the mill weir and a few moments later two more weirs in Markoldendorf. A welcomes the calm moments in the backwater while I'm already moaning because the Detonator is paddling so slowly. Afterwards, we continue quickly to Juliusmühle, where we take another break in provincial industrial romance.

The water level is better now and there are fewer obstacles. We no longer have to get out so often and can squeeze through gaps more often. The current becomes noticeably faster and there are a few more exciting rapids, so there's no chance of getting bored.
After Hullersen, the river splits and the left arm leads to Einbeck as the Mühlenkanal. It is recommended to take the right arm, which we do. After goot five hours we end the trip at the K510 and the sun is already setting.

Conclusion: The Ilme is a worthwhile small river for experienced paddlers in short, maneuverable boats. Due to the many obstacles in the narrow, deep river bed, small eddies and fast current, the stress level is consistently high. The rapids are not very challenging, but if you want to paddle there, you should be able to deal with bush and tree obstacles and have no problem climbing for half the day. I strongly recommend using whitewater equipment including a helmet.

Don't be put off, the pictures are from a great tour in winter.

The Oste is a small river in the north of germany between Weser and Elbe. About 40km of the upper reaches between Heeslingen and Bremervörde can be canoed and kayaked all year round. Restrictions on access must be observed and can be requested from the district.

The landscape is beautiful and varied. Buildings are rare and there is almost no street noise.
The river is relatively narrow and winding. Over longer sections it is lined with densely growing willow bushes that often protrude into the river. It is usually possible to cross without having to get out, but you should not be afraid of spiders or other small animals.

In the tourist season, the river is usually free of major obstacles. At least if you don't consider hordes of rental boats stuck in bends to be an obstacle.

If you like climbing in the river, it is a good idea to paddle there in winter. After the autumn storms, the Oste reliably offers a few obstacles that provide the necessary spice in the soup. Due to the moderate current, it is usually easy to get on and climb over, wind through or carry around.
Depending on your level of fitness, it can also be very strenuous.
