Remains of a Cypress:
Like many photographers, I am fascinated by Black and White imagery. Removing all color from a person, a scene, or an item both strips it of a certain sense of vibrancy, while simultaneously emphasizing features and contrasts that weren’t visible when viewed in a full-spectrum.
But doing it well is hard as not everything works in a monochrome world.
This one I feel does:
Taken on the same afternoon as the previous two posts, while there were no real image goels for the day, at some level I was in a bit of a contemplative mood. This remains of this Monterey Cypress Tree hit all the right feels for that, with the twisted trunk creating a nice mix of highlights and shadows then tend to pop when the color dissapears. This and the Santa Rosalia image from the same day are both some of my favorite recent pics.

Walking Among The Giants - Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park:
This past New Year’s Eve was an opportunity to spend a day at the Roaring Camp and the adjacent Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. While Evelia and I did get to ride on the Steam Rail Tour (pulled by the Dixiana Shay) which is a must-do if you love Rail (and especially Steam Rail), we also never pass up the opportunity to walk among the California Redwoods at Henry Cowell:
While I have yet to see a “bad” day there, this "Day Before the New Year" was particularly beautiful as the grounds, which were wet and cold from the recent rains, were rapidly being heated by the warmth and the sun, causing an almost magical world of rolling mists and streaks of sunlight among the giants:

Dusk at Shark Fin Cove:
One of the lesser-known spots along the Pacific Coast Highway between Santa Cruz and Davenport is Shark Fin Cove. While open to the public (8am to Sunset) getting to this largely-unmarked beach means parking at a small shoulder-pull-off just south of Davenport, hiking across the abandoned Southern Pacific Railroad tracks and then climbing down a steep-ish makeshift trail to the beach.
Once there, it isn’t hard to figure out how the Cove got its name, since it is dominated by a large Fin-shaped rock. Other little surprises once you get to the beach are a small underground stream that exits from the north cliffside into the ocean, and a rock-tunnel to the water’s edge on the south.
It takes a little effort, but if you have the time and are OK with climbing a bit, it is well-worth the stop:

Pawprints In The Sand:
Evelia and I moved to Monterey Bay on New Year's Eve of 2021, so like many newbies arriving in a strange new land, we did a lot of little weekend trips the first month, often bringing our Bully, Rose, along for the jaunt.
One of those trips was to Fort Ord Dunes State Park, which is just a short walk away from our current digs. Being her very 1st experience with an ocean, Rose was quite excited, trotting out ahead of us to investigate the water and waves...
While she was less enthused upon finding that the ocean is well... wet... the image of her heading boldy across the umarked sand to the waters edge made for a great moment.
