I love the simple sophistication of these garden irrigation tools. Ollas are one of those ancient technologies that probably have multiple origins—different groups across space and time figuring out a similar technique. I’ve read about their historic use in China, Central & South America and North Africa.

Working on ollas is great practice for me. It’s a return to the basic technique of pulling a cylinder, which is the first skill you acquire when learning to throw pots on the wheel.

@mdione I’m sorry, but I don’t understand the question and don’t know what “pot sized” means. There is no limit to how small one could make an olla. The smallest size I make holds about a pint. One of the points of an olla is to reduce the labor of watering. I would say the contents of an olla should last at least one week to be considered effective. Would a very small olla accomplish this? What are we calling “small”?

It’s not really hot tea season anymore but I felt like practicing my #teapot making skills—and yes, I still consider it practice. I’m always tweaking the design.

With this iteration, I thickened the handle for comfort & durability, as I’ve been doing with my mugs and pitchers. I also added a lid catch that you can barely see beneath the rim, to the right of the knob.

The bodies of my teapots are modeled after African water pots.

I’m having another open studio event this Saturday. Just wanted to share what my studio looks like. It’s the garage behind our house, converted into a #pottery workshop. That’s a wood fired #RocketKiln in front and I have electric kilns inside. I could run my biz solely online (and I was grateful to during early pandemic era, 2020-2021) but that feels strange since my pottery pulls so much from my surroundings. It only makes sense to share it with other people who live here. #Florida

@Bumblefish here’s a blog post I wrote that included links to download diagrams and other additional info. Mine was simple to build but it’s an earlier iteration. The diagrams have become more complicated over time (toward the goal of more even heat distribution within the kiln.) Hope this helps.

She was doing her job investigating war crimes made in Afghanistan, including by the #USA

That offended Americans. They decided to close all her accounts, which they have control over.

I'm expecting this behavior to become more and more common.

@PaulWay @treleanor in the context of the person behaving poorly being someone you have a personal connection to, calling it in can be an effective way to change their behaviour because it’s less shaming. It’s hard for people to imagine themselves doing better when they’re feeling shame. But if it’s not someone you can have a conversation with, and you don’t know anyone else who could do it, there isn’t an option other than call it out or let it go. Sometimes people reach a point where they just can’t let it go, and they need to name the problem behaviour.

We're surprised that authors aren't complying like the media, but we're not as sharp as Louise Adler, who so clearly put it in her open resignation letter "its stenographers in the media".

j'avais trouvé son précédent livre faible sur pas mal de sources ; je me souviens de la petite ferme de crypto au Congo qui dans son livre était un truc gigantesque servant de cheval de Troie à la Chine, mais sans source précise citée, et en creusant (un peu) cela ne ressemblait à rien d'autre qu'à une ferme minuscule, unique, sur un terrain en terre battue, financée sur fond français (ou européen). Donc pour argumenter contre la crypto, son livre n'était pas le bon outil malheureusement, on m'avait cloué le bec comme ça.

Soon, 1 out of every 15 points of light in the sky will be a satellite

Megaconstellations of satellites will visually clutter the night sky, disrupting astronomical research. And the environmental damage caused by these satellites is still unknown.

New lamps!💡 In 2023 I created a line of lamps for an interior design company. They wanted a very simple, classic, non-decorative surface and so it’s been fun to return to the idea with the addition of my Earth Tones and carved surfaces. The larger one is an order from a long-time collector who’s become a friend. The other one is for my mom’s birthday! #handmade #pottery

The handful of you who also follow my gardening account @PermaSolarPotter know that I’ve begun #spinning native cotton. I love plants in the hibiscus family and was given permission to gather some seeds from a plant at the community garden last spring. I started off spinning the fiber with a pencil and then got my neighbor to make me a spindle from scrap wood. The two ceramic whorls I made just came out of the kiln and my neighbor fashioned some dowels to fit them. #FiberArts

Given the current temperature in Glasgow, I figured it's worth posting this plaque I came across on Westbank Quadrant about the origins of Lord Kelvin's ground-breaking research into absolute zero while he was a professor at Glasgow University. None of it is remotely true, but it's an amusing tale nonetheless, and with the current cold snap, it feels quite plausible!
