Paul Coleman – The Weatherman

Gawd. I’m doing a terrible job at real time posting.

I try and steer away from a novelty buy. But this one went from initial novelty curiosity to a regular listen and I had to click order.

This initially peaked my interest by the cover – Paul sitting at the dining table with his bottle of Pepsi for family dinner perhaps looking chuffed after pumping out his Weather Channel tracks – before realising he wasn’t going to get paid. Poor bugger. But the Weather Channel theme was what got me. My dad worked for the Bureau of Meteorology and many a night was spent watching the weather report at the end of the news with him muttering when they got it wrong.

Released by Athens of The North, in stunning packaging, this album features 90’s jazz / vapoware created for the Weather Chanel. One would think this would be two sides of Muzak and whilst there are a couple tracks that hit a little too smooth, overall it’s fun and upbeat. The mixes of weather reports in between tracks is a nice touch. The back cover looks like a tv screen with little weather emojis on the track listing numbers and pictures of him with the weather presenter. So cute!!

Bjork – Post

I’m a little behind on posts. I listened to more then I could type at the time last weekend.

Post was the first CD album of my own music that I remember seeking out to buy (excluding the little mermaid soundtrack from when I was like 6). I was 11. I dragged my dad to the CD section of the department store John Martins to buy the fancy Australian tour edition for my birthday. It contained an extra 4-track cd of remixes and alternate versions including Venus As A Boy (Harpsichord) and Hyperballad with the Brodski Quartet. "She's from Iceland Dad!" I exclaimed whilst he looked a tad confused but went along with it anyway. I had been introduced to Bjork by my friends older sister who owned Debut. It’s Oh So Quiet was on every Saturday morning on Rage. I liked the video clip, but I preferred the other tracks. I was in love with this album cover and everything Bjork. I had a giant poster for years until it fell down so much in the hot suburban summers and became a crumpled mess.

This is a very sentimental album. As my music tastes changed and evolved as I grew older so did my appreciation for this. Those types of albums are really special.

I’ve been fortunate to see Bjork twice – once in 2008 at the Big Day out and in 2023 in Perth for her Cornucopia tour. What a queen.

Isis – Self Titled.

I had a leave day booked today and was reminded of this album so decided to dig it out.

This 1970’s all female funk/rock group is one of the few albums both my partner and I own separately. I found a copy at a fair years ago.

Singer Carol MacDonald was unapologetic about her 2 loves on this record – women and Jesus. It seems the label asked her to mix it up a bit. Can you be less gay? Ok, how about a track about football in the middle of the record?

They didn’t hold back on song titles either – Rubber Boy and Cocaine Elaine to mention a few.

Isis were one of a handful all female bands to first sign to a major label, with Carol MacDonald’s first band Goldie & the Gingerbreads being one of the first all-female rock bands and the first to be signed to a major record label. What a ground breaker.

Despite all of this, little is mentioned about her or the band.

Rip Rig + Panic - Attitude

Today I wandered down to the local public holiday record fair to have a dig. What use to be a white wash of older men and every Beatles album is slowly morphing into a diverse seller selection. What I was not expecting to find was the third release from 80’s English post punk/funk/free jazz collective. I’ve posted about RR&P before. Some beautiful piano instrumentals on this. Neneh is credited as Banana Cherry on this. Cute.

Sunday Coffee & Tunes 12/01/25

Today's selection is 80s post punk outfit Rip Rig + Panic. A surprise find from yesterday. Featuring members of the pop group, Neneh Cherry, and some guest spots from Ari Up and Don Cherry. This post-punk and jazz album is not only a powerhouse of talent but sounds fresh and ahead of its time.

Miles Davis – Water Babies

Not sure why but this album keeps popping up in my feeds. Anyway I found a copy Friday night in Clarity for $35 so decided to pick it up. This features the same art work by Davis friend and photographer Cortez “Corky” McCoy, a Black illustrator from Los Angeles. The album contains two different quintets and outtakes from the late 60’s that Columbia released a decade later. But you Miles walking talking encyclopaedia's probably already knew that. I didn't. The closing track on the second side is catchy a hell from Chick Coera’s keys. I spun that side twice.

I then went on a giant rabbit hole of reading about the art work for On the Corner which I will post about later. There is little written about the artwork for this. I don’t understand who that guy is supposed to be in the corner and why he looks like he is going to prom. Also what’s that kid got planned with the can of sweat peas?

Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet

Yesterday in Australia there were nation wide antifascist protests. It was heartwarming to see the turn outs. But fuck me, what a cesspit things are at the moment. Stereolab seemed a fitting choice for this morning for the current climate and to digest my feels.

They were the last band I saw before the Covid wave hit Australia and when live music died for a few years. I remember saying if that was the last gig for awhile, I’m content as it would be hard to top. It felt very fitting that was the last one for years. I’d like to think Stereolab would have found that amusing too.

I was around 10yrs old when this came out. At the time I wasn’t clued in to the politics behind the band and album. I was attracted to the pop melodies and the retro aesthetic – oh and of course I thought they looked cool as fuck. I was in year 5 which was my favourite year of primary school. I got to sit next to Daniel (dreamy), had my first boyfriend which lasted a week, a few girl crushes, went to QLD, and had my appendix out. That last bit was less fun. It was also the year I remember properly exploring my own music outside what was on the TV and radio. I was an only child so I didn’t have any older siblings to influence me. However I’d become best mates with my friend Julia via the local tennis club. I’ve posted about this before, but her older sister, who was very musical and in bands shaped a lot of my taste then. It opened a whole world of music I hadn’t heard before - including Stereolab.

That Stereloab gig was like a reunion of my childhood and uni days in one. My friend and her sister were there, in addition to my mates. It was a really magical night and on the list of great gigs.

This is the repress. I decided some years ago to buy vinyl copies of the Stereolab albums I had on cd and others I didn’t own. I try and buy the originals in the wild when I see them. An expensive habit I’ve created for myself. I have a few originals from my uni days – some I was fortunate to buy before their prices skyrocketed and some I was given after a friends bad break up where they could no longer listen to Stereolab. Oof!
