Lemmy.zip Server Update
Hello all,That time of the (shorter) month again!
Communities
We've got a couple of new communities for you:
- Autism Memes
- Mod Tools (I'm trying to consolidate all the available mod-specific tools in one place. This is a local-only community for Lemmy.zip too)
Server Update
A few things happened this month.Firstly, the smaller things - We updated to Lemmy 0.19.9 which was quick and easy. We also migrated the image database from Sled to Postgres which was relatively easy once it got going, but was not quick. But that piece of work is done now, and should result in tiny performance improvements now we have so many images.
We also implemented the Geoblock of UK IP addresses (more info here). This took a couple of goes to get it how I wanted it to work, but the UI is now blocked to UK IP addresses, and federation traffic is still allowed to and from the UK.
We've also implemented something I talked about at the end of the last server update, which I am calling "Default Blocks" (for lack of a better name) for new accounts. Basically, when a new account is created, we apply a couple of instance blocks for instances that we get the most complaints about - so far, it's Hexbear (who have recovered their domain if you're interested) and lemmygrad. Lemmy.ml was a candidate too, but there are a lot of bigger communities there and we dont really get complaints/reports from our users about that instance.
The messages a new user gets when they've signed up to Lemmy.zip, and the welcome post it links to, have been updated to reflect this, and give instructions on how to remove these blocks (in the user profile -> blocks) in the same way you'd add/remove any other block (because that's all we're doing in the background). The updated new user post is here, and we're open to feedback if anyone can think of ways to add or tweak it to make it easier for new users.
This way, I think, is the best of both worlds when we're trying to weigh up keeping new people on Lemmy compared against defederation. Obviously we're not an instance that goes wild on defederating because we want people to see the content they want to see, but this can turn some newer people away who likely would've stuck round had the onboarding experience been a little easier and clearer. With default Lemmy, there isn't really an onboarding experience - many instances use the default lemmy experience which is an email to let you know your account has been approved, if they've enabled this, otherwise you're kind of left wondering. One of the things we saw a lot of was after an application was created, the user would try to immediately log in and then reset their password, not realising (nor having read the application text!) that they would have to wait.
This is why we've put so much effort into things like a welcome email, welcome PM linking to various places such as new users posts, how to change the site theme, how to get help if you need it etc, and deny emails if we don't accept an account with the reason why and how to challenge that decision, to name a few.
This also doesn't effect existing users who signed up before we put this into testing, it's something Zippy does to the account as part of the signup process, so it won't change anything for long term accounts - It's just new accounts that will have the blocks applied.
In time, we might extend this if there are more extreme instances popping up. We might also review it for communities too, although that functionality doesn't exist in Zippy yet.
The ultimate aim is to provide a friendlier landing page for new users and an easier transition from other similar sites to Lemmy, without cutting everyone off from that content if they want to partake in it which is what Defederation would do. Defederation would also prevent users from the other instances in taking part in our content, which many do in a fair and rule-following way, and that wouldn't really be something we want to do either. So this is the fairest way we can do this, while still giving the user the choice to remove those blocks at any time as and when they wish to.
As always, happy to answer any questions in the comments.
Finally, I'm trialing out a Mastodon server at mastodon.zip (or click here for a direct invite). At the moment its entirely separate from Lemmy.zip but if it gets used we'll likely bring it under the same banner at some point.
Please don't be a lurker!
If youâre new to Lemmy.zip - WELCOME! I hope youâre enjoying your time here đ
I am sure that long term readers are bored of reading this now, but it is really is true that the easiest way you can support Lemmy.zip is to actively engage with content here: upvoting content you enjoy, sharing your thoughts through posts and comments, sparking meaningful discussions, or even creating new communities that resonate with your interests.
Itâs natural to see fluctuations in user activity over time, and weâve seen this over the wider lemmy-verse for some time now. However, if youâve found a home here and love this space, now is the perfect opportunity to help us thrive.
If you want to support us in a different way than financially, then actively interacting with the instance helps us out loads.
If youâve gone to the trouble of creating an account, then come and be part of the Fediverse! Please donât be a lurker! đDonations
Lemmy.zip only continues to exist because of the generous donations of its users. The operating cost of Lemmy.zip is over 60 euros a month ($60, ÂŖ50) and is mostly funded by the community! We keep all the details around donations on our OpenCollective page, with full transparency around income and expenditure.
If you're enjoying Lemmy.zip, please check out the OpenCollective page, we have a selection of one-off or recurring donation options. All funds go directly to hosting the site and keeping the virtual lights on.
We've also put up a link to our Ko-Fi page where you can donate via paypal instead of using a card. All Ko-Fi donations will be totalled up and added to OpenCollective each month for transparency. I've added a link in the sidebar, but you can also click the image below to go there:
We continue to have some really kind and generous donators and I can't express my thanks enough.
You can see all the kind donators in the Thank You thread - you could get your name in there too! Please remember, traditional social media is only "free" to you because they sell your data. We don't do that - if you want to support independent social websites like this one and you value your privacy, please consider a small donation. It really does help.

Too bad that when you are strong worded against a particular set of netizens, your comments get deleted by the moderator teams or whatever it is called here on Lemmy.
Reddit and Lemmy, two peas in a pod.
Call them out on !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com
Modlogs are public for a reason
Edit: also, your own moderation history isn't the best looking: lemmy.dbzer0.com/modlog?userIdâĻ
It really depends on the instance. For example, I am to the point of blocking politics on .world because they take a "both sides are the same" approach to moderation.
Most of my deleted comments and bans come from there.
This is the post that got me banned from ten forward. A year earlier I warned another person to not argue with the mod because they will ban you. I made the mistake of not looking at the username before replying.
Lemmy is actually worse than Reddit.
I wouldn't say Lemmy is worse than Reddit. Just different. I've never had a Lemmy mod tell me to write a three paragraph essay about my feelings on the patriarchy to get unbanned, because I made one comment in /r/conservative pointing out that Trump got vaccinated
Shout-out to the WitchesVsPatriarchy mod team, y'all are clowns lmao

No seriously, it's actually fun to comment on random things. Often the next day when I wake up I have a bunch of fun responses in my inbox.
I worry the same way, but mostly just when I'm commenting on something hurtful. Like if a commenter is being agonizingly wrong about something really important, spreading lies, you know the kind. I'll get worked up and start writing a comment, but realize that any point I make can be nitpicked and invalidated even if it's broadly correct. So I don't post those comments.
But when it's not in response to someone being inflammatory, I feel better about just doing my best with what I write. If someone has a correction, well that's a good thing! I'll acknowledge it and edit my comment to include the better info I'm given. I can hope that the people reading it don't see that I was wrong on one point and decide I'm completely wrong because I try to interact respectfully.
>writes three paragraph comment
>edits comment for 10 minutes to make it as succinct as possible
>realizes it has nothing to do with parent comment
>deletes comment
Back on reddit, a good half of the comments I would have left got deleted as soon as I posted them. Lemmy has forced me to make sure I've said something relevant, because if I leave a comment and then delete it, everyone gets to know that I did that, and that makes me feel even worse than saying something slightly off topic
Nothing makes me feel more powerful than getting downvoted and not caring while having a bunch of people who clearly care a lot about votes tell me I should care about downvotes.
Go ahead and downvote me, it literally doesnât matter.
I used to care about downvotes, until I realized that I'm always right, and the only reason someone would disagree with me is if they're wrong.
Learning that the average American has a 6th grade reading comprehension has caused me a great amount of stress worrying about the future of my nation, and brought me a great amount of peace knowing that anyone who disagrees with me is simply too bad at reading to understand what I'm saying
And even if I was wrong about something, I can simply assume that the people downvoting me are pedophiles, and I don't care what a bunch of pedophiles think of me
>2 year old account
>2 posts, 4 comments
One quarter of this user's comment history is them explicitly declining to stop lurking lmao
Frequent lurker here, I just have such a hard time getting my thoughts out into words thatâs relevant to a conversation. Add in an irrational amount of aversion to negative feedback (real or perceived) and it just feels better to just keep scrolling.
One day Iâll get better at this, itâs not easy when my socializing experience has been dominated with negativity both online and offline.
I feel you. I delete like half the comments I post and want to delete another half of what's left before I do, for the same sounding reasons.
I don't think people will be a dick to you on here, and if they are it won't be well received by anyone else.
The thing is, I feel like many people just add whatever they think and want to say to a conversation no matter how relevant or irrelevant it is to the current situation. In the end, I feel like most people on here are civil enough to not be mean-spirited towards one another unless they're talking to bigots and stuff.
I struggle with this quite often too - especially when it comes to topics that can be quite divide and polarising - but I always feel good once I do step out of my comfort zone and post away. There's usually bound to be at least a couple people with whom your comment resonates with. Give it a try maybe - you'd be surprised how well it can go đ
I comment! Sometimes!
And then there was last night where someone called me "brain fucked" for (allegedly) not understanding what conservatism is. Ah, internet discourse.
I mean. Maybe?
I've been wrong about stuff before. I'm sure I'm wrong about some stuff now.

</starshiptroopers>
the hell am i supposed to do here, there's like- barely any posts in my subscribed tab, and the things i do reply on don't get interactions at all LMAO
might as well keep lurking if it's gonna be like that
Are you interested in finding more communities to subscribe to?
!communitypromo@lemmy.ca or !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl and similar resources help me personally to find ones I never knew about
i mean, probably?
i just picked a random-ass instance just because i didn't really care
maybe it's just the fact that i like really niche stuff instead of big things
Counterpoint: By posting things that get downvoted, you still contributed and added to the discussion by exposing people to a viewpoint divergent from the ones they perceive normaly.
Or your contributions are just shit takes. That could be the case too. /s
Or your contributions are just shit takes. That could be the case too. /s
This, but without a /s
Sometimes you're wrong, sometimes you're talking to assholes.
I just wanted to let you know there is an option in your settings so you don't see upvotes or downvotes.
Lemmy (AFAIK) doesn't even show you your total upvotes (karma... whatever it's called) by default either. None of these imaginary points fucking matter.
So why don't you do yourself a favor and uncheck these boxes and not give a fuck what others think about your comment.
I know I have.
(Lemmy is rad as fuck)
It doesn't really generate activity. Basically any platform would prefer to have more comments to generate activity, which in some cases moves content across various algorithms, but also makes the platform look well active and involved. Having an active looking platform can make others want to sign up and join. I'm sure there's potentially other reasons.
That said, I think it's fine to lurk and should be promoted more. Sometimes it's better to spend time focusing on articulating your thoughts and writing your posts than it is just writing more posts overall, and sometimes there isn't much to add to a topic.
Posts or comments or both?
What app/client are you using?
I have been getting more stoned in the past few days, in the hopes to provide more absolutely terrible jokes, however I went too far and binged a bunch of Mr. Rogers videos on YouTube with dabs.

Same. I came to Lemmy because Reddit sucks, I'm looking for memes, cat videos, humorous and/or thought provoking content.
Instead my all feed is filled with an echo chamber of political content. Not gonna lie, Lemmy is forum that takes itself away too seriously, I don't interact because I don't want to argue politics with strangers online, and I know any differing options get down voted to hell.
I really wish Lemmy had a little more fun engaging, apolitical content. If it did, I'd be all over it.
I know you've probably heard this already, but it really makes a difference:
Curate your feed. My subscribed-feed is all I look at, I have an insanely long community subscription list but it feels truly active and basically no politics (thanks to voyager app's keyword filter and lemmy's community blocking feature).
Also a cool tip: look at profile of users to find interesting / cool communities.
Or, spend your time with us over at !sillydrawingrequests@sopuli.xyz đ
Wow, I'll have you know I post a comment maybe once a month. Fine though, I'll be better and make my first post today.
Darn social media asking me to be responsible and contribute back. What do you think you are? Open source software?
I have nothing to contribute.
Niche communities are still absent, so most of the time Lemmy is just political discussions and Linux memes.
Not interested in any of those
Lemmy on its web interface has a sorting option called scaled sorting. Which allows to bring up rising threads that are a few hours old.
Note: not all mobile apps have integrated scaled sorting. So you need to do some investigation.
You get more engagement on Lemmy than on Reddit, even if you don't comment in the first 3h. Probably due to sorting, probably due to lower numbers, but even the silliest comment will get at least a few reactions.
You can really tell it's made by socialists who hate accumulation and want to give everyone a chance.

I've not seen anything like that since I've been here. What do they push?
It's hard to engage with other posts when most of them are about Linux or American politics. Two things I don't really want to spent a lot of time engaging with.
Besides that it's mostly old memes which isn't worth commenting on.
Other niche communities I'm interested in are not that active. Even though I've posted in them Tue lack of engagement isn't a motivator.

Last Tuesday, I was set to give a talk on 'climate change in the Northeast' at a retirement home but had to cancel due to hourly job threats.
After nearly two weeks of overwhelming uncertainty, today it happened. I was fired from my dream of working at NOAA. I'm so sorry to everyone also affected.
The reasons I was given:
--> I did not demonstrate that my work was in the public interest, and my ability, knowledge and/or skills did not match NOAA's needs.
More soon. It will be okay.

Another red flag. They are part of the "Kingdom Culture" Christian sect.
They also make those As Seen on TV late night RFID anti-tracking money clip wallets for $100 or more a pop.

11 red flags. Pretty impressive.
I am intrigued though, they say the y don't want a "yes man", when they clearly do.

So, nobody who disagrees with management, and also nobody who automatically agrees with management.
Got it.

'not for someone who owns/has owned a business'
I smell some tax fraud a-brewin
"Has a problem with Christianity"
That sounds like a religious discrimination problem waiting to happen.
I was pretty ok until I got to "has a problem with Christianity". I mean sure, there's some serious gendering going on there but maybe they think it's ok because of the quotes. I can over look it.
...but the last one is definitely the worst. wtf?

Time of day and patience are key. Sometimes you'll get bite after bite, and then the next time at the same spot, nothing.
Also try switching up your bait if it's not working, but you think there are fish there, as they can be picky eaters. Using shiny lures seems to work well.
Never underestimate the effectiveness of giving the line a little jiggle as you reel it in to simulate live prey.
I like to bring gloves to protect my hands from sharp fins (some can cut the shit out of you easily), as well as pliers to remove the hook as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Know your fish, their habitat and feeding habits. Some fish live deeper than others thus a fly wont work and a lure or bait and sinker would.
If they eat flies, time of day is pretty important. If you spend enough time on lakes you'll notice they are pretty active at dusk and dawn. You'll see them jumping. That means they are hungry and can see well enough to get their prey. Cloudy days are good because they can see out the water all day long or at least when the sun isn't shining.
In rivers I look for eddies. Places that a fish wouldn't have to work so hard to stay in one spot. Their there to rest, but if a nibble comes along they'll bite.
With flies and lures try to mimic an injured animal. If using worms or bait, patience.

For pan fish baiting a hook and waiting for a bite (possibly using a bobber) generally works well. It's easy to target them during the breeding season when they make "beds," at other times you may need to find an area with a drop off or weeds. You generally want your bait to be off the bottom by a reasonable amount.
For something like bass you tend to use crank/jerk baits that you need to keep moving to entice a hit. You can generally find them in similar areas to pan fish as they eat those species. The idea is generally to pass lures through areas that allow a bass to hide and strike anything that swims by.
At certain times of the year you can target spawning fish in various rivers. Generally at these times what you use isn't too important, it's more about being there when the fish are passing through.
