The post-WW2 ‘international rules-based order’ that supposedly underpins global affairs in the interests of peace, democracy and prosperity has always been largely a charade. But Israel’s continuing Gaza genocide, carried out with seeming impunity and with the complicity and even active participation of the US and its allies, has exposed the charade like never before.

Twenty years ago, at the 2005 World Summit, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the doctrine of the ‘responsibility to protect’ or ‘R2P’. The key concerns were to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. Whenever populations are at risk of such crimes, the international community is supposed to take collective action ‘in a timely and decisive manner’ to prevent mass atrocities from taking place. If the doctrine of ‘R2P’ was authentic, then there would have been massive international action to prevent Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, as well as Israeli terror acts committed in the occupied West Bank, including the routine killing of Palestinian children. (...)

The killing of 15 medics and emergency workers last month by Israeli soldiers, and the attempted Israeli cover-up, with bodies and vehicles buried in a shallow mass grave, provoked not a single public condemnation of Israel from Western leaders, as far as we are aware. (...)

Historian and political commentator Assal Rad observed via X that Western media have no compunction giving headline coverage whenever ‘Russia lies’. But, in the case of Israel, the headlines use the weasel phrase: ‘Israel changes account’. (...)

Last November, perhaps seeking a viral ‘gotcha’ moment, a journalist challenged Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, with the clichéd question, ‘Does Israel have a right to exist?’

Albanese’s cogent response is worth contemplating:

‘Israel does exist. Israel is a recognised member of the United Nations. Besides this, there is not such a thing in international law like a right of a state to exist. Does Italy have a right to exist? Italy exists. Now, if tomorrow, Italy and France want to merge and become Ita-France, fine, this is not up to us. What is enshrined in international law is the right of a people to exist. So, the state is there. The state of Israel is there. It’s protected as a member of the United Nations. Does this justify the erasure of another people? Hell, no. Not 75 years ago. Not 57 years ago. Surely not today. Where is the protection of the Palestinian people from erasure, from annexation, from illegal occupation and apartheid? This is what we need to discuss.’

A powerful reply indeed. Where is the much-vaunted ‘R2P’ when it comes to Palestine?

Last Friday, Mirjana Spoljaric, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said that Gaza has become ‘hell on earth’. Israel was ‘threatening the viability of Palestinians continuing to live in Gaza at all’. What is happening in Gaza is, she said, an ‘extreme hollowing out’ of international law.

Why the press is ramping up its acts of anticipatory obedience to the Trump regime

During the 2024 election, the American mainstream news media continued to practice its obsolete norms of “fairness,” “balance,” “objectivity,” and “neutrality.” Coverage remained steadfastly focused on “bothsidesism,” an obsession with the polls and the “horserace,” and inside the Beltway gossip rather than critical coverage of Trump’s campaign and his MAGA authoritarian populist movement. As an institution, the news media did not treat Donald Trump’s chances of victory over the Democrats in the 2024 election with the seriousness and alarm it merited. The result was to normalize and minimize the existential harm that Trump’s return to power would cause the nation. (…)

The BBC’s withdrawal of the powerful documentary, ‘Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone’, epitomises how much the UK’s national broadcaster is beholden to the Israel lobby.

The corporation’s longstanding systematic protection of Israel, considered an ‘apartheid regime’ by major human rights organisations, has been particularly glaring since the country launched its genocidal attacks on Gaza in October 2023. We have all seen the repetition and amplification of the Israeli narrative above the Palestinian perspective, omission of ‘Israel’ from headlines about its latest war crimes committed in Gaza, and even the dismissive treatment by senior BBC management of serious concerns about bias raised by their own journalists. Herman Geleijnse doorzocht de krantenarchieven naar de berichtgeving over het fascisme. Hij constateert zuinigjes dat het ‘niet goed mogelijk is om erg positief te zijn’. De zwarte kanten van het fascistische regime waren zeker geen geheim; het was een kwestie van zoeken en doorvragen. Maar de Nederlandse pers publiceerde liever fascistische persberichten. Onaangename gebeurtenissen werden genegeerd en correspondenten kregen de opdracht verhalen te schrijven over fris marcherende jongetjes en over de stiptheid van de spoorwegen. En over die meer dan levensgrote, geniale staatsman, natuurlijk. Het verhaal van het fascisme was alles bij elkaar te mooi om kapot te checken.

Doet de pers het nu beter? Geleijnse constateert dat de ontwikkelingen in Polen en Hongarije de Nederlandse pers hebben wakker geschud wat betreft het buitenland maar, zo schrijft hij, ‘het volgen van een heldere koers lijkt aanzienlijk moeilijker als het om nationalistisch en radicaal rechts in Nederland zelf gaat’. Hoofdredacteuren spreken mooie woorden over persvrijheid en democratie, maar de gewone journalist die de straat op moet is sinds de ruk naar rechts van twintig jaar geleden schuw geworden. Het benoemen van het kwaad wordt vooral overgelaten aan columnisten. Geleijnse ziet verschillen tussen toen en nu, maar ‘de overeenkomsten zijn soms onthutsend’.

Follow the Money

De Duitse mediawetenschapper Martin Andree windt er geen doekjes om: we moeten in Europa onze poot stijf houden om te voorkomen dat de grote techbedrijven hier alles voor het zeggen krijgen. Big tech zal nergens voor terugdeinzen om zijn macht uit te breiden.

‘Big tech gelooft niet in politiek, niet in democratie, niet in gekozen regeringen. Ze willen daar vanaf. Ze willen geld verdienen en ze willen macht,’ zegt de Duitse mediawetenschapper Martin Andree vlak voor een optreden in Amsterdam.

Andree is de auteur van het boek Big tech muss weg!, dat nu ook in het Engels te koop is. De ondertitel liegt er niet om: Digitale giganten verwoesten onze democratie en economie… Maar wij zullen ze stoppen. (...)

Grote techbedrijven zijn volgens hem uit op volledige dominatie van de economie. (...)

‘Techgiganten als Alphabet, Meta, Amazon en X willen af van de regelgeving in Europa,’ zegt Andree. ‘En ze zullen er samen met het Witte Huis alles aan doen om hun doel te bereiken.’ (...)

‘Big tech is oppermachtig, bleek uit ons onderzoek. Het internet is veranderd in een dorre vlakte, een kerkhof waar nauwelijks iets gebeurt. En hier en daar staan grote silo’s waar al het verkeer plaatsvindt en waar het geld wordt verdiend,’ zegt Andree. (...)

‘Wij lieten op basis van keiharde cijfers zien hoever ze al zijn gevorderd met de overname van het internet. Dat ze een monopoliepositie hebben verworven die ons medialandschap vernietigt en onze economieën ontwricht. En daar zaten ze niet op te wachten. (...)

Vooraf had Andree niet kunnen bevroeden dat de ondernemingen die hij onderzocht hun dominante marktposities zouden gebruiken om wetenschappelijke publicaties van voor hen onwelgevallige data te voorkomen – en dat in een vrij land als Duitsland. ‘Maar dat is dus wel wat er gebeurde,’ zegt hij.

Een paar dagen na publicatie van de Atlas kreeg hij een bericht van ‘een van de Amerikaanse big tech bedrijven’. De boodschap was duidelijk: ga niet verder. (...)

In Big Tech muss weg!, dat leest als een manifest, beschrijft hij hoe grote techbedrijven hun dominante positie gebruiken om andere spelers uit de markt te drukken. Dat deed Google bijvoorbeeld toen het zijn eigen dienst Google Shopping voortrok in de zoekresultaten. (...)

Andree: ‘Er is sprake van systematische en wijdverspreide ondergraving van eerlijke en vrije competitie. Wat je keer op keer ziet: big tech overtreedt de wet en als ze daarvoor boetes krijgen accepteren ze die. Ze lachen om de bedragen, die maar een schijntje zijn van wat ze jaarlijks aan inkomsten binnenhalen. De Europese Unie en de individuele lidstaten zijn de afgelopen jaren totaal overlopen door de razendsnelle digitale transformatie die gaande is.’

In zijn boek voorspelt Andree dat platformbedrijven over vijf jaar voor een groot deel de plaats hebben ingenomen van de traditionele media, een ontwikkeling die volgens hem fataal is voor democratische samenlevingen. (...)

‘Er zijn eerder boycots geweest, maar de netwerkeffecten waren uiteindelijk altijd sterker. Mensen zijn bang om contact te verliezen met anderen, om niet meer gezien te worden. En dus blijven ze hangen op de grote platforms. Door de feitelijke monopolies is het voor andere partijen moeilijk om een positie te verwerven en zullen er ook nauwelijks investeerders zijn die geld willen steken in dit soort initiatieven. En dus blijven ze klein en zwak.’ (...)

De nieuwe Eurocommissaris voor Digitale Soevereiniteit Henna Virkkunen stelde zich de afgelopen weken strijdbaar op. (...)

Ondanks die strijdbare houding is Andree er nog niet van overtuigd dat Brussel op termijn de rug recht kan houden: ‘Virrkunen gebruikt grote woorden, maar ze moet ook daden laten zien. Vergeet niet dat we in Europa op dit moment vergaand afhankelijk zijn van Google, Facebook en Amazon. En zij willen af van de bemoeizuchtige Europeanen. Wat als die platforms hier op zwart gaan? We moeten dan eerst onze eigen sociale media opbouwen. Accepteren Europese burgers dat ze een paar jaar met inferieure alternatieven opgescheept zitten?’ (...)

Maar met de komst van Trump zijn de kansen gekeerd, de nieuwe president heeft al laten weten dat hij niet veel ziet in het opbreken van Google. ‘Daarom ben ik nu zo gefrustreerd. We bewegen ons in de verkeerde richting, de signalen staan op rood. Trump in het Witte Huis, radicaal-rechts in opkomst in Europa, en ondertussen worden de techbedrijven groter en groter. Ik ben somber.’
