I have written about this before, and it just happened again. I somehow managed to hide the TweeseCake window. I know that there is a way to unhide it, and also to show all commands. However, not every keyboard can handle the alt+Windows+shift+letter commands. Right now, I'm using a Toughpad, and the only access I have to it is via such a keyboard. I had to go into my application data folder, delete the TweeseCake folder (why it's not a true portable app, I don't know), then log into TweeseCake, then reauthorise Friendica to use it, then reset a few settings. I am going to save said folder so that, if this happens again, I can delete it from my computer and readd it from my thumb drive, but please, can anyone tell me if there is a way to disable this invisible windows mode, or whatever it's called? If not, can someone write a script to do it? This is beyond annoying, and it's really the only thing I don't like about this program, which is perfect otherwise!

Given that TC is currently being rewritten, I really don't think anything is likely to be done about this from the developer's end. From your posts, I assume you know quite a bit about editing files, so you may want to handle this from your end. It's quite a simple process. In the main TC config session, you'll find a listing for "keymap", with a name after it. Go to the main TC folder (not the one you deleted and replaced, but the actual program folder), go into the keymaps folder, and find the named keymap. That is, if your keymap entry in the TC config session says "default", find default.keymap", and open it in notepad. Search for window_toggle and edit the keystroke to the right of the = sign to something which you will never hit, or something that can be accessed from your current keyboard. Save the file and restart TC. The new keystroke should now work and you need never hit the old keystroke which your keyboard can't do, whether accidentally or on purpose.

I wish to begin this by saying that nothing can replace the wonderful consideration of people adding alt text to their images. It is very much appreciated, and I thank you for doing it. But for those images without said descriptions, I found something truly useful. It's called AltBot, and it adds alt text to posts without descriptions. I just followed it a few hours ago. On TweeseCake, at least, you'll hear something like "image with no description", and when you go to the next post, you'll hear the bot's explanation of the image. If you wish to folow Altbot, it can be found at altbot@fuzzies.wtf. I don't know who created it, but I sincerely thank whoever did. If only such a lovely bot could work on all sites.

in reply to Tech Singer

@Tech Singer I use NVDA with the Cloud Vision Ad-on. It's good, but it's nowhere near as good or descriptive as Altbot. There was another one (I forget its name) that used gemini and that was a bit more customisable, allowing a user to write a prompt, set the character limit, etc. , but google updated the version, so the ad-on no longer works. I believe it's available for other sites, though those do require payment.

It has just come to my attention that there is only one developer of Friendica. It's a truly wonderful site, with a lot of potential, particularly for those of us coming from Facebook. It allows for extremely long posts, local posting, and you can follow and interact with people from various sites in the Fediverse. But there are a few issues regarding screen reader accessibility, and perhaps some things that I'm not aware of. I have therefore decided to create a Friendica development tag, in order to find people who are willing and able to help resolve these issues.

@Nick's world I use TweeseCake with it and it works very well. The main problems are on the site itself. Even then, it's not truly inaccessible. It's just that it could be better, with normal links instead of menus, and a way to edit posts without resorting to a client. But things do read, and it is possible to make and edit a profile, read and respond to posts, etc. TweeseCake just makes it easier. Pachli for Android also works well, but I prepfer Windows.
in reply to Nick's world 🌎 👨‍🦯 🗽

@Nick's world Oh, yes. It works very well! And unlike TWBlue, you can edit posts with it. I'm still not sure why they don't have that feature. They also don't allow long posts, as TweeseCake does, but if they're primarily built for Mastodon, that, at least, makes sense. They do allow you to see favourites, though, which TweeseCake seems to have a problem doing. They'll be displayed and then turn to numbers (1 of 250, for instance), and then disappear.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I am not sure how much Friendica has diverged from Hubzilla, Streams, or Forte, but they are all from the same family tree. They all come from Mist Park and Friendika (the MIT licensed version of Friendika before it was renamed Friendica and switched to AGPL).

There are some opportunities for collaboration, but the biggest obstacle is incompatible licenses. Hubzilla is MIT licensed and Friendica is AGPL. That means that Friendica can use code from Hubzilla, but Hubzilla can never use any code from Friendica. The exception being addons, themes, and widgets, that can be any license.

Friendica seriously needs to do something about their accessibility. I was able to edit one post directly on the site, but it was apparently a lucky click. I keep trying, but though there is an "edit" option,, when I hit it, it never sends me to an edit page. There is some kind of dialogue and I can never get into it. Even the homepage doesn't have normal links. It's some kind of menu bar, and if I go to profile, for example, it reads as a link, but I had to tab through everything else to get out of it. Why can't people just make normal links! This is why I use TweeseCake.

I do not know if this is helpful but at one point there was a blind dosemu user who was running dosemu in terminal mode. He ended up reaching out through the mailing list despite most of the current development and related discussion taking place on github nowadays as part of the dosemu2 project, possibly due to accessibility problems with github.

Maybe the knowledge that dosemu2 is getting a lot of development helps. If you have trouble to find info on it, we should solve that.

Can anyone recommend an accessible course to learn html? It must work with NVDA. I've heard of Code Camp and W3Schools, but how accessible are they and how do they differ in content and style? I like courses with a structured approach, where things are explained i.e. a deductive and not an inductive approach. I usually don't need a tutorial, but I am fine with general instructions. In this case, though, exercises would be very beneficial. I am using this prior to beginning Part 2 of the Web Developer's course at Deque. I am not a developer, but they don't have one for accessibility testers.

Two ideas, if I may. I'm almost sure you've already thought of both, but wanted to throw them into the pot just in case. First, as to size, what about the small gaming machines? Steamdeck/Aya Neo/GPD series? They're certainly small, and generally quite powerful. They also have batteries which will either save you getting a power bank at all or make the bank an accessory, not a must-have. Secondly, if you want to keep the price down, what about refurbished gaming units? I have seen that Valve is selling refurbished steamdecks, which may be of some use.
in reply to Tech Singer

@Tech Singer I know next to nothing about gaming machines, other than that they have controllers. I know a lot about umpcs, and that is what I originally wanted, since the keyboard, speaker, and batteries are built-in. The GPD Pocket 3 would be great. But it, and most other modern ones are either well above my budget of $300, or they have lower specifications than my Dell, with a Pentium N6000. I don't mind that, but if it's slower, it should have an older version of Windows to compensate. I do own a real umpc (Fujitsu UH900). I adore the form factor, and even the layout is decent, since I replaced the keyboard with a U.S. model. But it's slow, even for me! I also want something that can handle virtualization if XP or 7 isn't installed natively. I can even do this with my Acer Travelmate 8172, with 4gb of ram and a Intel Core i5-560UM, but that's a big laptop (11.6 inches) not a umpc or tablet.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I agree with you on the UMPCs, but sadly, they're just not being made to a reasonable level anymore. I know the refurb steamdeck is being sold for a bit under $300, though I'm not sure how much. It does have controllers but, if you're using an external keyboard anyway, you can disable them. I killed them in device manager myself. Two problems with it, though, are that it comes with Linux so you have to install Windows yourself and that it has only one USB port. That is not a typo, it has one USB port which is a USB C port and which is used for charging. The installation of Windows isn't a huge deal but the USB port drove me to tearing my hair out in large handfuls. It does, however, work with VMWare and Virtual Box, so you can install virtual machines if you like. It works with a Win 7 VM, I've used it and had no issue. The processor is, of course, fairly reasonable, it is meant for light to medium gaming, after all.
in reply to Tech Singer

@Tech Singer The Toughbook also has only one usb port, so they have that in common. I would definitely need to use a hub in both cases. I wouldn't usually use an external keyboard if one is built into the machine, unless I were sweating a lot (I have hyperhydrosis). I've been known to short out many keyboards that way, so maybe, that wouldn't be a bad idea, after all. I'll check the specifications of these. As for Linux, I would love a machine with Debian Mate installed, but I don't know of any. However, if I have to install Windows, this would mean extra money, but it might or might not be a lot, depending on which version I chose and where I purchased the key.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I haven't seen your particular toughbook, but I have seen a few and all the units I've seen had at least one charging port in addition to the USB ports. The Steamdeck has one USB C port for everything, charging, peripherals, docking... It has one port! A USB hub with charging pass through does work well, though, in my experience. Sorry about the external keyboard, you mentioned in your first message that you would be using all of them with an external keyboard, which is why I brought that up. I am typing this on an external, I have yet to see a built-in keyboard I liked, prefer not to have my machine in harm's way, and don't want to keep the screen up if it's a laptop. It's a good deal easier to recover from spilling something, just for example, on the $15 Logitech K360. The Steamdeck supports Valve's own Steam OS, I have never tried installing Debian on it directly. Given the availability of Win 10 OEM keys, I don't think you'll have to spend too much to install Windows on the unit. I assume, because you mentioned Windows 7 earlier, that you're not desperate to upgrade to 11.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

Teaches me to either use braille or read better, I misread toughpad as toughbook with some sort of weird pronunciation. Honestly, this looks like a very nice unit. You can use any BT keyboard with it, too, so you're not restricted to some sort of proprietary keyboard/cover/whatever. The only thing I'd be a bit hesitant about is running a virtual machine with that processor and RAM. I'd be happier with 16 GB and a more powerful I5 or an AMD unit. I can't judge, though, I have never used that particular I5, and have never used XP at all on a VM. It's Amazon renewed, you have a chance to return if it's hopeless. Keep in mind that the LTE modem is not available on the Steamdeck. Though the steamdeck is a bit cheaper, I suspect you'll end up with more or less the same cost if you're going to buy a key for Windows 10. You get Windows with the tablet. Keep in mind, also, that the tablet is going to be a good deal thinner than anything else, and that the tablet has a separate charging port. The Steamdeck doesn't.
in reply to Tech Singer

@Tech Singer I've run virtual machines with 4gb of ram on the host, but that was with 7. With 11 as the host, I want at least 8gb, which works very well. Right now, I'm using a Del Latitude 3120 with an N6000 processor, a 128gb solid state drive, and 8gb of ram. I have Tweesecake, about five browser windows, and two Notepad windows open in 11, plus an XP machine with three more open windows, all running concurrently without a problem.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

Another thing, if I may raise it. Is there a reason you're running 11? I ask because you do seem to be familiar with the fact that 7 and XP are still usable if you have good security practices. I'm always a bit hesitant about 11, and even 10, on any sort of resource limited system because Microsoft takes the view that they own the machine and can run whatever they want on it, including updates which slow things down, break things, and so on. I'm running 10 on this machine, but it never sees the internet, there's a 7 VM which is connected to the internet through its own network card.

in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I'm intrigued by this little machine. It's small (even smaller than the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 MK3 that I was considering), light, has built-in speakers and a microphone, several ports, including a 3.5mm, a usbc pd port, and even a built-in battery! This may very well be what I need. Oh, did I mention the price won't kill me, unlike the $600+ umpcs? Keep in mind that I don't care about screens or graphics, since I'm blind.

Hi Georgiana, thanks again for your helpful feedback.

It sounds like you're trying to follow Communities using the Newsmast app which will ask for you to create an account.

As we spoke about the other day, we know there's issues here that we need to fix and hopefully will be able to soon!

If you want to follow our Community Feeds on vanilla Mastodon, you can do so by follow them directly from your current friendica[dot]world account. (1/2)

I really love Tweesecake. The more I use it, the more wonderful things I learn about it. I am now able to view my Local Friendica.world timeline, Home (which is basically the people whom I follow), the Federated Timeline, my Favourites/Likes, my mentions (when people Mention me), etc. all in one place! Everything is customisable, too! I only wish they made a 32-bit version, so that I could use it on all of my machines, both physical and virtual. Still, as long as I can use it on one, it's good, since I can just use NVDA Remote to access it with another. Oh, and it doesn't try to insert nonsense when I write tags! I hate when I write in text fields and receive suggestions.

Yay!!! I got Tweesecake to work! I couldn't understand, for the life of me, what was going on! I thought the folder was corrupted, so I redownloaded it, and whenever I started it, it kept saying "Welcome to Tweesecake", and then "Config". Then, when I tried to navigate through the window, it completely disappeared. So I thought, maybe, they had discontinued their service, but that was not the case. It turned out that this is not a fully portable app. Unlike the ones at portableapps.com, and like both Serpent UXP and IceDove UXP, it stores information in a separate folder and not just the main one. I may change this behaviour in the future. For now, I deleted the separate Tweesecake folder (in App Data), and restarted the program. And now I have a perfectly functioning Windows client, including the ability to edit my posts!

Update. I can read my posts (and some others) on the Local page and option of both Semaphore and TWBlue. However, I cannot reply on Semaphore. It shows a reply button, but when I press it, there is no edit box for me to type into. I also can't edit my posts there, but I already knew that. It's one of the things that Enafore was supposed to have fixed.

It seems that I am unable to edit posts on the main Friendica page. No matter what I do, the edit link, or whatever it is, does nothing. Fortunately, I am able to do so on Pachli. However, there is no keyboard shortcut available for this, which forces me to use the touchscreen. Likewise, there are no hotkeys to easily navigate posts etc. I wouldn't mind it if I could easily navigate my timeline, etc, as I can on the website, by using headings and so on. But at least, I can now edit my posts with something other than Tweesecake..

in reply to Jeff C

I have no idea why on Earth this had a sensitive content label, but anyway. That explained a little. I am not a programmer, just a blind user of NVDA who is sick of this rubbish. But yes, even then, things weren't standard. There are many programs, even from the past, that were far from accessible. But many were, and most did use the standard menus. Many still do. As for websites and certain programs that have adopted this other approach, Firefox was the first one I saw doing it, after version 28. The last version of Thunderbird with normal menus was 60. On both, menus can still be accessed with the alt key and navigated with arrows and tabs, but they are read like webpages, and the options look like links in some cases, all with no buttons to confirm or cancel things. Unfortunately, I don't know of a browser that doesn't do this, including Serpent UXP and Supermium.

Does anyone know what is going on with Tweesecake? It worked well until today. Now, when I start it, it shows the welcome screen and says "config", but when I try to use the arrows to select my Friendica profile, the whole program disappears. Then, when I try to restart it, I have to go to the Task Manager and end the task tree, or it will tell me that it's still running, even though I don't see it when I alt+tab through my open programs. For the first time in my life, I have to say that a phone application is better than a Windows client or even website, as I have full access to everything on Friendica with Pachli and not on Tweesecake, Semafore, or Phanpy. Obviously, I can edit things, from posts to my profile on the Friendica site, but it's not as intuitive as it could be and has strange menus and such, instead of normal links.
That is why I was seeking a simpler alternative.

Yay! This is much better!

"I'd use blue but right now it doesn't support edits to my knowledge, which is a dealbreaker. Cake and Enafore are the only accessible Windows clients I know of that do. Enafore is pinafore which merged in all the accessibility fixes of Semaphore and is more compatible with Glitch, which is what places like the cave have switched to anyway. So unless Semaphore starts to have a major uptick in development it should be regarded as superseded by Enafore."

Okay. So how am I supposed to edit thing? I thought it would be decent, with a normal edit link or button. But of course, no one thinks with common sense these days! I tried the menu and selected "more" and "edit" but it did nothing! I tried looking for an edit box and found nothing. Then, I selected the checkbox and still nothing. But of course, it had a delete button. I guess it was too difficult to make an edit one, too.
