Of all the dumb things...

I tweaked my back scraping the snow off my car. I swear, the only thing worse than getting old, is not getting old.

I know I'm old because I'm actually excited about getting new siding on my house.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

It's been 30ish years, but I just started rereading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

With everything going on in the world, I really needed something to make me smile. I really appreciate Douglas Adams' sense of humor, and coming off a number of horror and non-fiction books in a row, this is just what the doctor ordered.

It's amazing to me that that is considered a Utopian novel. I wonder if Plato was just a creature of his times, or was he considered a fascist asshole even among his contemporaries.

The part of The Republic that may be considered Utopian is this...longing, I guess...for this Philosopher-King that would rule justly. I don't really read this work with that issue in mind. as I don't think that is plausible. Instead, I read for an understanding of these cycles of government and how one form naturally devolves into the next form. In particular, and in the context of today's world, I was reading for his thoughts on how democracy devolves into tyranny. In a similar vein, I've been reading "How Democracies Die"....a much more modern work with much more history to digest. I'm hoping to find clues for how to reverse a slide into tyranny and instead have a renewed democracy

Trip to London - Suggestions?

So we're planning a trip to London in a couple months. We'll be hitting the standard tourist spots (again for me, first time for the rest of my family), and I'm curious if anyone has any off-the-beaten-path suggestions to check out while we're there.

Its impossible to make recommendations without knowing who they are for.

However there are a couple of things I recommend
a) go on a hop on/hop off bus tour on the first day. See the whole th9ing. It takes a couple of hours. Then get back on and do it again but get off and explore where you find something of interest. You now have the macro view.
b) research your interests, eg. Motor bikes, dressmaking, sailing, Peter the Great, etc.. and see what there is of this in London.
c) take a water taxi from westminster steps.
enjoy.

Fair point. Like I said we'll be seeing all the normal tourist points, and since there are six of us travelling in a wide range of ages, interests vary. The Hop On Hop Off busses are a staple of all our trips, and the water taxi is a good idea - we did that in Paris but not London the last time.

I'm happy to hear about anything others find interesting - it may or may not suit us, but we can't check it out if we don't know it's there.

My First Post

Hi everyone, I'm Faustus (not really, but you know how it goes). I finally deactivated FB and am exploring federated alternatives.

At this point, I'm looking for cool, funny, and smart people to connect with. And while I agree that there's a lot going on to be angry about, I find constant shouting into the void to be wearisome. We can be friends if you think the world is full of nuance and disagree with someone thoughtfully.
