The first Nazis book burning -- a practice Nazis used to elimated public knowledge about anything that contradicted their fascist worldview -- was at Magnus Hirschfeld's Institut Fur Sexualwissenschaft, or "Institute for Sexual Research." Hirschfeld performed some of the earliest sexual reassignment surgeries, and his library contained pioneering research on gay, transgender, and intersex topics. On May 6, 1933, the library was raided by Nazis and its contents were burned in the street.

“Nancy Green was Aunt Jemima.Aunt Jemima existed long before Nancy Green became Aunt Jemima. Aunt Jemima was based on the Mammy Slave.

The Mammy is a common racist archetype of the older kitchen slave tasked to attend to the white family’s needs. The archetype is characterized as having ‘an implicit wisdom of her own inferiority, obedience, and submissiveness to her masters, and a hostility to black men.’ She was the female equivalent of the House Negro, who would forego having children of her own so that she could find value as a cuckold raising the children of her masters.

This archetype was adapted for comedy of the Black-faced minstrel show in 1864. The role was played by a fat white man in black face who would bumble around the stage, leaning in to her ignorance and short temper, eagerly bonking another servant with a kitchen implement. When her character would make an appearance on stage, the show would open with her theme song with the opening lyrics of "The monkey dressed in soldier clothes, Old Aunt Jemima! Oh! Oh! Oh!”

The entire concept of Aunt Jemima was a mockery of Black women. However, the only thing she could do was cook and cook well. Early Pepsi Co. would cash in on this association and created the Aunt Jemima brand, using racists caricature portraits on adds and packaging.

Nancy Green was a former enslaved African living in poverty who was discovered by a talent scout whom she cooked for, who found her to be the perfect living image of the caricature, and who could do live appearances to sell their product.

With no other financial options, Nancy Green accepted the role that mocked her very person. She surrendered who she was to assume the identity of a racist caricature and became known as Aunt Jemima in real life because it helped her become financially stable. She would then use the money she made to advocate for inequality, but knew better than to bite the hand that fed her.”

Chappell Roan paid tribute to trans girls on the red carpet before the 2025 Grammy Awards on Sunday night. While catching up with GLAAD, the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer was asked if there was anything that she would like to say to the LGBTQ+ community at the end of a difficult week, which saw the incoming Trump administration issuing a series of anti-trans political attacks.

After acknowledging that things are “brutal” right now, Roan told GLAAD red carpet hosts Chrishell Stause and Anthony Allen Ramos, “Trans people have always existed and they will forever exist and they will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away.”

“I would not be here without trans girls,” she continued. “So just know that pop music is thinking about you and cares about you and I’m trying my best to stand up for you in every way that I can.”

GLAAD then thanked Roan for bringing queer pop to the mainstream, which prompted the singer to clarify that “a lot of people walked so that I could run.”

“There’s been so many women over the decades and decades of their sexuality being really represented in pop, from disco down to the 2000s like Rihanna, Nicki,” she said. “A lot of people sacrificed a lot so I could be here.” We stan a legend who pays tribute to her predecessors rather than falsely claiming to have invented — ahem — gay pop.

If you can believe it, this marks Roan’s first Grammy Awards, though she clearly wields pop stardom like a seasoned pro already. She was nominated for six awards ahead of the ceremony, with “Good Luck, Babe!” up for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance. Roan was also nominated for album of the year for The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, and last but certainly not least, Best New Artist.

The budding rap superstar won her first grammy for best rap album during the telecast for the 2025 Grammy Awards for her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal. Her win makes her only the third woman, after Lauryn Hill (who won as a part of the group The Fugees) and Cardi B, to take home the golden statue for rap album since the award was first introduced 35 years ago.

An emotional Doechii took to the stage to celebrate her win.

“I put my heart and my soul into this mixtape,” she said. “I bared my life. I went through so much, I dedicated myself to sobriety and God told me that I would be rewarded and that he would show me just how good it can get.” The rapper has been open about her sobriety, even making it the subject of her single, “DENIAL IS A RIVER,” from her (now Grammy-winning) album.

The rapper went on to thank various people who helped her professionally, including her mother, her label and her fans.

Doechii’s win doesn’t only make her the second solo female rapper to take home the coveted Grammy award, it means that 100% of the solo female rappers who have taken home the golden Gramophone are Black, queer women. Cardi B, who presented the award that she won in 2019 for Invasion of Privacy, has been open about her bisexuality throughout her career, even to the point of getting in several social media spats over her love of women.

Doechii ended her speech by shouting out to all the Black women watching.

“I know that there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there who are watching me right now, and I want to tell you, you can do it,” Doechii said. “Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud.” She added: “You’re exactly who you need to be to be right where you are.”

This Grammy win is another banner moment in a major year for the queer rapper. Aside from releasing her acclaimed mixtape in August, she also guest starred on RuPaul’s Drag Race earlier this month, catapulting her song “Alter Ego,” which was the soundtrack to a Lip Sync for Your Life, to its largest day on Spotify ever."

"Chappell Roan came to the Grammys stage not only to accept the award for best new artist, but to use her platform to share an important message about fairness and working conditions for developing artists.

After a show-stopping rendition of her song “Pink Pony Club,” the singer used her acceptance speech to advocate for a livable wage and health care access for new and emerging artists.

“I told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a livable wage and health care, especially to developing artists,” Roan said, reading from a notebook she brought to stage. “Because I got signed so young, I got signed as a minor, and when I got dropped, I had zero job experience under my belt and like most people, I had a difficult time finding a job in the pandemic and could not afford health insurance.”

She continued, “It was so devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and so dehumanized to not have health insurance. And if my label would have prioritized artists’ health, I could’ve been provided care by a company I was giving everything to. So record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a livable wage and health insurance and protection.”"
