I held desperate hopes that Zelenskyy would refuse to give Putin what he wanted.

I couldn't imagine that he would, but I also knew the pressures he was going to face today.

And he stood up to them. He gave them nothing. In the face of their puerile, incandescent, narcissistic rage, he gave them nothing.

My respect for that man grew to extravagant proportions today.

Since the election of #Trump, that #independence is increasingly being tested.

Good evening!

This has been a tough day. Found myself in a rage spiral because of today's events. I went for a long walk to try to burn off some of the anger.

The daffodils are a step closer to flowering so it's not all bad news ☀️:

Its time to uninvite Trump from coming to Canada for the G7 -- G6. Vance also should be forbidden from coming here ever. Why do you want 2 Manchurian candidates for Russia on Canadian soil?

#cdnpoli #uspolitics #uspoli

in reply to Scott Tribe - Proud Ketchup Chip Nationalist

Unfortunately we still need two things:
Time - The longer we have to make better connections and alternate arrangements, the less damaging it will be for Canada.
A Personal Rift - What happened today was between two of our friends. Trump needs to defy us directly. At the G7 he will be humiliated into being less than the most important person in the room. There he will expose himself further as Putin's lapdog. There he may give us exactly what we all need to expel him.

Honestly, I don't know how Zelenksy didn't punch the cheetoh that whole time. That man has remarkable restraint.

I have never been so embarrassed for our country. What a thug. "World War III," he says over and over, echoing Putin's sabre rattling throughout his invasion. Even sitting in the White House, Trump is echoing the Kremlin line.

What's even more despicable is that the spineless, gutless GOP will say nothing about this indefensible show of gutlessness and cowardice by their leader. Imagine that: Being afraid of cowards makes you one.

I doubt legislators can be protected in the shit hole states, but maybe the blue states can protect their own with the help of local, non-maga law enforcement?

Everyone knows that if Zelensky had agreed to the "deal" Trump would have just taken whatever minerals he could from Ukraine and still let Putin roll in and destroy the country.

Something to keep in mind when you hear that voters care about the economy and vote the way they do because of the economy and vote for fascists because of the economy…

…is that for about half the population, “the economy” just means “whether a Republican is president.”

That reporter from The Guardian — and the Harris pollster they talk to — dance around this, but just somehow can’t quite put it together:

They have the causal arrow backwards for a •large• chunk of voters. That chunk didn’t vote for Trump because they thought the economy was bad under Biden; they thought the economy was bad •because• they vote for Trump.

(Yes, there are •also• plenty of people whose “economic concerns” are actually economic concerns. But they are only one part of Trump’s coalition, maybe not even a majority of it. Analysis that misses that fact misses the whole story.)

#uspol

in reply to Paul Cantrell

They thought the economy was bad because they voted for Trump in 2016? Why vote for him again then... I'm confused.
in reply to Chris Smart, ve3rwj

@VE3RWJ No, they assume that the state of the economy aligns perfectly with the party of the person holding the presidency.

@niarbeht Oh ok... they didn't realize the economy did better under Trump because of Obama's policies, similar to now with Biden's.

@VE3RWJ They trust Trump out of principle. Ergo, if he says the economy is bad, they believe it.

I'm not sure they got much sympathy...

Help with search

!Friendica Support

I'm not sure if this is a settings problem, an node problem, or a Friendica problem, but I get very different search results from using the web-ui (Frio theme w/ BookFace style) and an app (Raccoon for Friendica) on the same account.

From the web-ui, unless I search for a specific account ('user@server.name'), I can only search for other Friendica users. Here's me searching for me ('@breakfastmtn'):

However, if I search using Raccoon, I can see my many other accounts across the Fediverse:

So from the web-ui, I can only discover Friendica accounts which is less than ideal. Is there a setting I'm not seeing to change this? Should I talk to my admin? Thanks in advance! 😀

Similar bonus problem: I never receive notifications for new follows in the web-ui. If not for the Raccoon app, I'd never know when I had a new follower. All desktop notification settings are enabled -- although it looks like the 'introduction' settings all apply to email.

The Court *should* be concerned about its independence and technological security, particularly given the current American experience of historical factual government information being deleted for ideological purposes.

It would be wise and, of all things, the Court should be wise.

Indeed. More op eds about "personal liberty" sounds great really, but somehow I'm suspicous exactly what certain particular people using those particular words really mean.

Maybe we could faciliate free markets by having open borders, limiting intelectual property to promote competition, and such? I don't even know where to begin for op eds suggestions on "liberty", but not somewhere Bezos would approve I'm sure.

Goooood morning! ☕

The other day I had two glasses of wine but yesterday I felt like it'd been two bottles. Just walking around in a haze all day. But I have it on good authority that today's a new day. The coffee's flowing and I'm ready to go.

The instance has felt really stable for the last few days. Moving the problem to another time of day has either made it easier to manage or... the problems are happening while I'm sleeping. Either way, that works for me! ;)
