We have deliberately short staffed our call centre.
The good news is you've managed to reach us at an unusually low call volume time.
But we'll deliberately place you on hold for a minimum of 15 minutes, because fuck you. We want you to piss off and sort it out on our website.
(It happens: pcgamer.com/hardware/if-you-evโฆ)
All our staff have KPIs around getting you off the phone in five minutes, as well as cross-selling or upselling products.
When it turns out that you've got a particularly complicated edge case, and our low-cost contractors completely screwed up your order, our staff won't be authorised to fix your complaint.
So they'll say they'll transfer you to a different department, and then place you on hold, and your call will be lost in our PABX system until it's eventually cut off.
After four calls and 17 transfers, you'll luck out and get an experienced and competent customer service rep, who takes pride in her work despite being underpaid, who will actually mostly resolve your issue.
Unfortunately for her, this will take 30 minutes, blowing out her KPIs. We'll give her some additional coaching to ensure she never makes that mistake again.
We're in a comfortable oligopoly, and all our "competitors" have exactly the same customer service practices.
Turns out it's more profitable for everyone in our industry to do this than to compete on customer service.
So even if you leave, you'll get the same shabby treatment from them.
You still haven't hung up, so here's some smooth jazz muzak that an intern found on a royalty-free CD. We've compressed the crap out of it, to the point it's now basically static. We'll play it on a loop in the hope you hang up.
Despite all of the above, we'll periodically gaslight you by playing a prerecorded message that says your call is important to us.
You know it's bullshit, we knew it was bullshit when we set it up.
Please hold the line, a customer service representative will be with you shortly.

@raphaelmorgan I see they've done great things with the system I helped engineer for them. /s

Like, imagine if it took a few words to try to figure out *who to send me to* and if it can't figure out what I want it just puts me on the line with a person? That seems like it would be a great use for this phone system, and it could actually save a lot of time! But no we gotta get rid of the humans as much as possible ๐ฉ

The EU is introducing an energy label for phones, together with mandatory requirements for phones sold in the EU;
- 5 years of software updates (AFTER they stop selling the device in the EU)
- providing important hardware parts (during sale and for 7 years after), including free software (if needed), to every repair shop, within 5-10 business days
- batteries have to make 800 charging cycles and still be above 80% original capacity
And on top of that, phones and tablets need this energy label (which also includes a fall damage durability and repairability score), and abide by the above requirements, from 20 June 2025.

Additionally stuff like this strengthens the second-hand market, which in turn causes more sales in repair parts, and so onโฆ a lot of positive dynamics.
I suspect my #Fairphone4 already complies with most of these requirements.
And they just lowered the price of the #fairphone5 model.
Cass M ๐๐ฝ likes this.
@BradRubenstein @prex to a point, but economies of scale also come into play, if theyโre making significantly less of a thing then the per unit cost could go up.
I guess we will have to see how it plays out, another interesting component will be how easy these devices become to repair, even if you can get the parts no ones gonna want to repair a device ifs hours of labour to a repair shop
Agreed, it's complicated. But costs don't determine prices. Buyers and sellers determine prices.
Here, the regulators are banking that the sellers will continue to sell even though regulation may make their profit margins smaller. Could be. Or they could slightly pivot to get around the profitability impact of regulation.
The tech aficionados will always move on to the newest thing. The regulatory question is whether the five year old devices get repurposed by poorer consumers down the line, or end up in landfill.
That will leave more market share for more ethical and better suppliers.
Perhaps credit needs to also go to #Fairphone as they proved these could be done even by a tiny company with few resources. It showed that the excuses made by larger companies were untrue.

What? No! If I have to see an advert, I want it to be irrelevant. If I have to see an advert, show me tampons or baby food or football souvenirs โ things I'll never buy. Don't show me something interesting, because that'll distract me and, even worse, might tempt me to spend money I don't need to spend.
All adverts are bad, but targeted adverts are the worst of all.

There was a lot of hype for a law mandating easily replaceable batteries, but it seems that wasn't that great after all, as the law meant that it only had to be easily replaceable by professionals.
I really miss my Samsung Note 3 which wasn't thicker than modern phones but one could just pop the back of it open and change the battery in a few seconds. I hoped that we'd get closer to that experience in the future.
Two problems: an unforeseen problem that pops up after four or five years may deplete your spares. And ten days is not enough to restart a production line. On the other hand, if you overproduce spares to be on the safe side, then you are being wasteful when they donโt get used.
Iโm not against requiring spares to be available for more than a short time, but this should have been thought through a bit more. (2/2)
That's exactly what car manufacturers have to do, although not for 5 or 7 but for 20 years. Worldwide.
And this all wouldn't have been necessary if they didn't try to fuck everyone in the first place by monopolizing repairs.
you think customers will accept that? An Apple that doesn't innovate with their phones?
You seem to have a very extreme view with this, this is just regulation, and while it may seem extreme, it has been the norm for a bunch of economically successful companies for a while now, and the rest are either too greedy or too lazy to do the same, so this is just holding all of them to the same standard
I don't know if you've seen their earning reports lately; they can spare a billion or so for this kind of upkeep
@FrugalGamer No, customers wonโt accept it and that is why I think โstandardizing important componentsโ is not going to happen.
Itโs not only about money. Inventory that isnโt used means wasted energy and wasted raw materials. That is actually counter to the idea of sustainability. (1/3)
@andyn @briankrebs this law was introduced a year ago, so companies have had plenty of time to comply
This is just the press release from the EU saying "it's happening now"
Do I read correctly that it's *new* models of phones that need to do this?
So, e.g. the Fairphone 5, that already launched, is not in scope?
Then there's not even 18 and 20V packs anymore!
@janantos While true, Euro regs mandating availability of parts and diag software don't have to be followed here in the States except in jurisdictions that also mandate availability of such things.
So while we might get better quality and more-repairable-in-theory phones from manufacturers that ship to both EU *and* US, they can still short us on the parts and resources where they can legally get away with it.
@tshirtman security patches at the very least, yes
They're not required to keep old devices up to date with new features, but to make sure they're still secure, and usable
2. ratings will be not correct or biased (as now with food rating)
3. as always focus on the least important things is EU motto
fucking overdue - but nice.
Wish there was a small bit about not making children work in the mix, or a wage for all worker involved from the mining to their disposal in which dump.
This is great, but I don't get what the point is of demanding hardware parts for longer than software updates - once a smartphone stops getting security updates, one shouldn't encourage using it any further.
Especially if there is no requirement to open source all required software (drivers), so the community can take over maintaining it.
5 years of software updates after they stop selling device in EU? What does that mean?
If they sell device for 2 years with active software support, they need to supply 5 more years of updates? I don't quite understand the wording here.
Energy efficiency... i have no idea why they're putting that onto phones.
I fully subscribe to the rest though.
I still remember the days when you bought a TV or radio they also shipped the circuit diagrams and repair manuals with it, together with an address where you could order the spare parts.

It's crazy how I could change the screen of my FP2 without tools... and then that thing was so sturdy, that I've retired it after 7 years, still with the original display. Not that my clumsy ass didn't try to break it. Probably fell down around a thousand times, 2-3 times it hit the ceiling at speed before falling to the floor.

I've gone through a case a year, but that saved the display.
@IngeMH20 that is really good news!
And this is the best part:
'Energy labelling and ecodesign requirements will apply to these products from June 2025.'
As some companies already extended those services, I expect they knew this already for some time.
@jt_rebelo DMN! If this is correct then there is still hope for humanity! Much needed and a good step towards how most products should be treated.
Acknowledged that my old pad was EoL because of old software, and started thinking about how this will translate to new electric cars ๐ค
I have a feeling my old "stupid" fossil cars will outlive many of the ev's I see on the road today. Sadly.
@ShadowJonathan
@jt_rebelo indeed, planned obsolesence is not reserved for EV's exclusive.
It's like it's obsolete the moment the manufacturer does not support it anymore.
I can understand that a manufacturer cannot support a product indefinitely, however the software should be open sourced immediately when it's abandoned.
Looks hacky - does that work (well) in practice?
I've seen some reviews for these kind of things that complained about buzzing noise when using headphones while charging
Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day.
Still it's directed to the symptom and not to the core problem.
@nedovolny what kind of core problem, then?
And it's about results; these expectations are fixed now, they won't change, and all companies are expected to follow them
Locked firmware and unsolicited updates.
Most of the hardware is perfectly fine even after 5 years of its end of support/warranty.
My guess (based on a long history of experiencing corporate greed)?
Companies will manufacture two sets of phones. Those compliant with these EU guidelines in the EU, and those that <expletive> their customers everywhere else.
@Spring Jo ๐
It's not that act.
We had this already on desktop, nowadays again for laptops, which are not glued and replacable parts.
Repairable phones and tablet like fairphines are doable with no more costs. I believe this leads to EU standards become world standards.
Equal modules, connectors, capacities of batteries, plugs are standard for TV, HiFi, even energy plugs (US, UK, EU) are modular to assemble the one you need for your country.
SD cards, SIM are are homogenous.
And those who are no DIY engineers run the devices still in default mode and bring them to a repair shop.
This is nothing short of amazing...
I never buy phones through my service providers anyway, I may have to make sure that any I do buy are packed and labeled for EU sales.

By the time this gets voted, lobbyists will spread their FUD about how it will "kil business and innovation, and makes people workless, and it will even kill kittens".
Then politicians will block itโฆ
Also why hardware replacement parts should be available only repair shops? It should he available to everyone who can do the repairโฆ
They need to make replacement parts serialization totally illegal too!
Then companies will just ignore it, like they're already doing with the "repair score" (1,2)
1. From french legislation, supposedly mandatory for all products in all shops. It's rarely displayedโฆ for some laptops in some shops only.
2. Which is a complete and utter joke anyway. Devices with no technical documentation for repair at all, nor replacement parts available (especially chips that fail often), and serialised parts (when available), have high scoresโฆ
@devnull @yngmar Apple got fined for 500 million lately for not abiding by EU law, with provisions to make that fine higher if they don't comply
This law could do the same, plus also actually bar them from the EU market
I'm not entirely sure where you're getting your doomerism from, but it's not founded with the realism of the solidity of European institutions, the fact that America is finally crumbling down does not mean that Europe is falling as well, if anything, they're solidifying
Come back in 10 years if things have changed then, but for now, this is EU regulation, with teeth.
This has nothing to do with the USA and just because you have one single example of a 500ร10โถโฌ fine, which is the exception rather the norm, doesn't mean my "doomerism isn't founded".
Companies have been ignoring laws for decades. Fiscal laws, safety laws, environmentalism-related onesโฆ I mentionned the repairability score law. I could have added planned obsolescence, which is illegal in France since years, but is still a thingโฆ And also the shittons of GDPR violationsโฆ
Laws that
- evaded if you have a legal department
- use fines are the only penalty
And when fines are (much) lower than that extra profit you make by ignoring lawsโฆ
Don't work on big corporationsโฆ
Companies can affort to pay fines. Fines are how rich people get away with much worst than what gets poor people in prisonโฆ
Now feel free to blindly trust โthe solidity of institutionsโฆ" and act as if companies never get away with breaking lawsโฆ
@devnull @yngmar if fines are 10% of your global revenue the first time, and 20% the next time, they *are* going to care
Business only cares about profit and costs, they'll do what is cheapest to do, and if it's cheaper to abide by the law than to ignore it, then they will, and the EU knows this formula
But sure, a headphone jack is pretty large so no wonder so many manufacturers get rid of it.
I wonder how Apple is going to comply with the repairing requirements of this law...
Because as anyone who has ever watched Louis Rossman can attest, Apple is THE worst offender when it comes to being anti-repair...
I am curious to see how the 5 years of updates requirement plays out, considering that many phones reach EOL because some hardware component stopped receiving firmware and/or driver updates.
Will this lead to increased pressure on those component manufacturers, or will phone vendors simply leave such updates out (and the vulnerabilities in) and simply spoof the patch level like LineageOS does?

With the technology now available in the 21st Century, we need to stop thinking of War as only physical, armed conflict.
Over the past 50+ years we have seen increasing meddling in the politics of countries by foreign powers.
The influence of Russia, Israel, and the US Right Wing have been as invasive as American Military colonialism since WWII.
Information warfare is just like biological warfare. It'll harm their opponents, but at one point it'll turn against the perpetraitors...;)
And I guess we see the premises already.
It is a lose/lose situation.

There were adults in the white house during Trump's first term. Alas, the clown show has worked carefully to avoid that "mistake" again.
But many other countries have adults leading them. They, and China, will prefer a "soft landing" where US investment slowly declines over time. It would be economically traumatic for them and many innocent countries if they drop bonds too quickly.
Lets go!
We can do this if we all work together.
Let's sink the American economy!
