JD Vance’s “kiss of death” to Viktor Orbán ahead of the April 12 elections in Hungary
The visit of US Vice President JD Vance to Hungary to openly lend his support to Viktor Orbán ahead of the legislative elections of April 12, 2026 constitutes, at best, a monumental political recklessness, at worst, a clear-cut interference 🎯. For the American Vice President has not held back, in recent months, from denouncing the European Union for its "interference" in Hungary's internal affairs, whether on the rule of law, freedom of the press, or fundamental rights.
Yet here is Vance, sweeping into Budapest with great fanfare, as the official representative of the world's foremost power, to shake the hand of a leader in the middle of an election campaign and send an unmistakably clear political signal to Hungarian voters.
If this does not qualify as a clear-cut foreign interference, this word has lost all meaning 🌍.

The hypocrisy is simply staggering: what Brussels does through budgetary conditionality would be an assault on Hungarian sovereignty, yet Washington's electoral sponsorship would be, by contrast, a mere "courtesy visit"? All the more so given that Orbán, an unrepentant assailant of European institutions, has never seen fit to refuse the billions in subsidies that Brussels has paid him over the years 💶, more than 21.7 billion euros in cohesion funds allocated to Hungary for the 2021-2027 period alone, to which 10.4 billion in post-Covid recovery funding were added, amounting to more than 32 billion euros in total — which speaks volumes about the sincerity of his professed sovereignism. There remains yet another reading, a crueller one still for Orbán: in a Hungary where the political wind is shifting, with polls placing the opposition party Tisza, led by Péter Magyar, comfortably ahead of Fidesz, followed by the Democratic Coalition of Klára Dobrev and the ultranationalist Mi Hazánk of László Toroczkai.
Trump's man's public embrace could well prove to be a kiss of death 💀, reminding moderate voters which camp their current Prime Minister has chosen to cosy up to, in defiance of Europe and his own partners, Hungary included.
