In a year of tough news, these are some of the stories that made us smile in 2024

Whether we were paying attention or not, 2024 was filled with good news. In case you weren't, NPR's member stations have been keeping track. Here are some of the stories that made us smile this year.

2024 will be the hottest year on record, even hotter than expected

It's looking like 2024 will be the hottest year since record-keeping began, unseating 2023 for the top spot. Climate change is playing a role, and scientists say it was even hotter than expected.

What is the best gift to give to your friends for Christmas? Well, if you're Ivor Novello, apparently, it's a professionally-recorded meddly of your music, with a Christmas greeting written out! Can you imagine recieving something this beautiful from a friend? Most of these people worked with him as well, so it was probably both friends and colleagues who received it, and, I'm willing to bet, his own mother.

Some Christmas traditions can be traced back centuries. Others come from families with stories attached. This one is entirely mine. It started many years ago, when I first heard this, and it's continued ever since. Here, then, is the original Jingle Bells. If you think you know this song, you're probably wrong, especially the chorus! Have fun, and happy Christmas! I hope your driving experience is better than that of this poor man. haha

The Fediverse is a little confusing, but I'm new here. Looking to make connections centering on religion, God, and faith. I am a Roman Catholic currently living in the UK.

God bless everyone this Christmas time.

Happy Year end..

sorry for cross-posting this to some of you...

For the special coming days, I wish a pleasant year end vacation with the following words of wisdom from Marseille, a place I once lived :

"Bon Bout d'An Et à L'An Que Ven......Que Se Siam Pas Mai, que Siguem Pas Mens !"

Honestly, I don't really care if Google Translate or ChatGPT works with Provençal dialect, so, here is literally what it means :

"Happy Year End and to the Year to Come....If we are not more, let us not be less!"

indeed people in this special place at the end of the A7 motorway believe these few days between X-mas and new year's eve condition the whole next year to come.

Sincerely yours.

Hell,world!

#hello 🤝

Sujet pouvant heurter la sensibilité de personnes

S'abreuver excessivement de bières, même excellentes, et de vin une veille de réveillon est un acte assez idiot 🤢

'We are not California': New Jersey dealers push back on electric truck rules

Vehicle dealers are pushing back on rules that would increase the number of electric trucks sold in New Jersey. It could be a preview of a brewing fight over state rules about cars.

Transversing the Fediverse

Today discovered Loforo while browsing my feed on Mastodon. It seems like destiny because l was listening to a podcast about WordPress news today. I also tried Tumblr years ago. Bluesky and Friendica on mobile Jooks horrible, in jards to formatting. Anyway love the Fediverse, Linux, and ppen source not only because of choice but also data privacy. can enjoy Caturday, SilentSunday, Free Fridays, or just browse photos from all over the world. I've met people who have thousands of Bluesky/Threaders followers and people like me who lurk and comment. Loforo works well enough so far. Hopefully my Nadirah will find this one day. I love you!

Home automation and me

A first generation Google Nest Hub and a few smart light bulbs from IKEA, that's been the entirety of my smart home until recently. I had the lights set to turn on in the morning on workdays (and turn off when it's time to leave), and I use Nest hub for timers, mostly in the morning for my pot of tea, and for cooking pasta. That was pretty much it.

While I'm not very technical, tinkering is something I sometimes enjoy, so I do have a few other devices around the flat. I use an OSMC Vero V to watch things on my dumb TV, this is fed by Jellyfin on a Raspberry pi 4 running CasaOS. The Pi also has a few other services such as Navidrome for music.
Another pi runs PiCorePlayer and connects to a few different speakers. Things work fairly well.

A few months back I got the Home Assistant Green as I was curious about the device and what I might be able to do with Home Assistant itself. I set it up but didn't really have the energy to actually learn how to use HA, even with the improvements in UX and onboarding they have apparently made over the last year or so, it was a bit much for me at the time. I'm always a bit extra tired this time of year. So the Green has been sitting idly, while IKEA has kept turning my lights on and off for me while Google let me know when the tea was ready.
But I really want to replace the Nest hub. In my quest to de-Googlify my life, that single piece of equipment had been a pain point. I use Proton for email and cloud storage, I use DuckDuckGo and Firefox for the web, and Freetube and Pixelfed for videos. But that Nest Hub in my kitchen has just been so convenient. Getting something from Amazon or Apple was obviously not going to happen, I'm not going to choose one Big Tech company for another.

Enter the new Home Assistant Voice PE. Combined with my currently idling Green, I hope for some simple automation magic to happen soon. At first, as I get a little more comfortable around HA, I'll probably just use it to turn on and off the lights, set timers and to play music, but after that? I don't really know. I'm looking into getting some smart blinds or curtains. For me things like thermostats, energy use, garage doors, cameras etc aren't relevant, but future projects might include some limited gardening, a wall mounted screen, and possibly using AI with the Home Assistant Voice.

I've already begun by unplugging my IKEA Hub (which apparently doesn't work with HA anyway) and pairing my lights with the Zigbee dongle I have, and made my first automation. And it worked! I can control my PiCorePlayer from HA too now, even if I'm a bit confused about the whole set up, it does work. I preordered the HA Voice yesterday, and with a bit of luck it won't take too long to get here.

I've no idea yet if this is a one off post, or if I'll make a few more as I explore this and delve a little deeper into home automation. Space, needs and funds are all limited, but as I mentioned earlier - it's fun to tinker sometimes.

Since this is the Fediverse, I thought it would only be appropriate that I post this. I just discovered it via Perplexity. It's a decentralised search engine, with at least seventy-three instances that agrigates results from at least seventy different search engines. I'm sure each instance uses its own, but still. I find this whole idea to be intriguing. Plus, the few I've tried are all free of clutter and work well with NVDA, from XP through 11

This is the main list of instances.

in reply to Georgiana Brummell

Well, I've already seen an accessibility issue, at least with this instance. I went to Preferences, and I was able to change a few things such as language, unit conversion, etc. Then, I saw something else, about full/pretty/host for sites and a few other options. I set those. But when I tried to go back, I couldn't. Only The "General" tab was displayed, and I know there were originally a few others. Also, some categories are listed, but I can't seem to do anything with them. Can anyone enlighten me Is it just this instance or a program-wide problem, or am I simply not using the right commands with NVDA?
