Transversing the Fediverse

Today discovered Loforo while browsing my feed on Mastodon. It seems like destiny because l was listening to a podcast about WordPress news today. I also tried Tumblr years ago. Bluesky and Friendica on mobile Jooks horrible, in jards to formatting. Anyway love the Fediverse, Linux, and ppen source not only because of choice but also data privacy. can enjoy Caturday, SilentSunday, Free Fridays, or just browse photos from all over the world. I've met people who have thousands of Bluesky/Threaders followers and people like me who lurk and comment. Loforo works well enough so far. Hopefully my Nadirah will find this one day. I love you!

Home automation and me

A first generation Google Nest Hub and a few smart light bulbs from IKEA, that's been the entirety of my smart home until recently. I had the lights set to turn on in the morning on workdays (and turn off when it's time to leave), and I use Nest hub for timers, mostly in the morning for my pot of tea, and for cooking pasta. That was pretty much it.

While I'm not very technical, tinkering is something I sometimes enjoy, so I do have a few other devices around the flat. I use an OSMC Vero V to watch things on my dumb TV, this is fed by Jellyfin on a Raspberry pi 4 running CasaOS. The Pi also has a few other services such as Navidrome for music.
Another pi runs PiCorePlayer and connects to a few different speakers. Things work fairly well.

A few months back I got the Home Assistant Green as I was curious about the device and what I might be able to do with Home Assistant itself. I set it up but didn't really have the energy to actually learn how to use HA, even with the improvements in UX and onboarding they have apparently made over the last year or so, it was a bit much for me at the time. I'm always a bit extra tired this time of year. So the Green has been sitting idly, while IKEA has kept turning my lights on and off for me while Google let me know when the tea was ready.
But I really want to replace the Nest hub. In my quest to de-Googlify my life, that single piece of equipment had been a pain point. I use Proton for email and cloud storage, I use DuckDuckGo and Firefox for the web, and Freetube and Pixelfed for videos. But that Nest Hub in my kitchen has just been so convenient. Getting something from Amazon or Apple was obviously not going to happen, I'm not going to choose one Big Tech company for another.

Enter the new Home Assistant Voice PE. Combined with my currently idling Green, I hope for some simple automation magic to happen soon. At first, as I get a little more comfortable around HA, I'll probably just use it to turn on and off the lights, set timers and to play music, but after that? I don't really know. I'm looking into getting some smart blinds or curtains. For me things like thermostats, energy use, garage doors, cameras etc aren't relevant, but future projects might include some limited gardening, a wall mounted screen, and possibly using AI with the Home Assistant Voice.

I've already begun by unplugging my IKEA Hub (which apparently doesn't work with HA anyway) and pairing my lights with the Zigbee dongle I have, and made my first automation. And it worked! I can control my PiCorePlayer from HA too now, even if I'm a bit confused about the whole set up, it does work. I preordered the HA Voice yesterday, and with a bit of luck it won't take too long to get here.

I've no idea yet if this is a one off post, or if I'll make a few more as I explore this and delve a little deeper into home automation. Space, needs and funds are all limited, but as I mentioned earlier - it's fun to tinker sometimes.

Since this is the Fediverse, I thought it would only be appropriate that I post this. I just discovered it via Perplexity. It's a decentralised search engine, with at least seventy-three instances that agrigates results from at least seventy different search engines. I'm sure each instance uses its own, but still. I find this whole idea to be intriguing. Plus, the few I've tried are all free of clutter and work well with NVDA, from XP through 11

This is the main list of instances.

Well, I've already seen an accessibility issue, at least with this instance. I went to Preferences, and I was able to change a few things such as language, unit conversion, etc. Then, I saw something else, about full/pretty/host for sites and a few other options. I set those. But when I tried to go back, I couldn't. Only The "General" tab was displayed, and I know there were originally a few others. Also, some categories are listed, but I can't seem to do anything with them. Can anyone enlighten me Is it just this instance or a program-wide problem, or am I simply not using the right commands with NVDA?

After a bit of research, I learned that TWBlue is open source, and that, while the current version is only for 64-bit machines, there is a 32-bit version. There is also a 32-bit version specifically designed to work with Windows 7. Whether that's the same as the regular one, I don't know, but it does exist. However, since it has some extremely important features that TWBlue lacks, such as editing posts and profiles, etc. I prefer TweeseCake. However, it seems that there is only a 64-bit version. Am I wrong? Is it closed source? I would love to be able to work strictly from my Windows XP or 7 virtual machines, but this is the one program I must use in 11, and I ultimately find myself using 11 for everything, which I don't wish to do. I don't know of any other truly accessible clients for Friendica, other than these two.

In case you didn't see my original post on this which I sent mentioning you some weeks ago, let me quote it here. "you're quite right about Tweesecake not working with 7 in the normal course. I have it working with 7 here, but only because of VXKex. If you haven't tried that, it may be worth a shot. 1/2
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

github.com/vxiiduu/VxKex/ I had to use an older version of VXKex, but it did work. I have used TC on 7 for a good while without issue. Be careful with this since I know there has been some posting of modified VXKex versions with malware. If you want the file I downloaded back in March, let me know. I have only used TC on a Windows 7 64 bit system, not sure about 32 bit systems, whether 7 or XP. Note that TC does have a closed source. 2/2

communism

You are just being offensive here to avoid rational arguments and the debate in total. Communism by the way is not the private property of Marxist Leninist vanguards, nor did the proletariat ask them to be the guard dogs of communist orthodoxy.

In many ways both Leninism and Maoism are reform capitalism, exchanging one ruling class for a managerial/political party elite, while keeping the structure as capitalist as any. That would make libertarian communists the only true "communists" since they denounce exchange and propose the replacement of all forms of exchange with collective relations. The true revolution that leads to communism.

Producing Lada's and Jastava to export and exchange for French perfume, or toys for the elite of the party is not that far from what US capitalists do. And they were doing so by suppressing human rights of the workers, while keeping the potential standards of living low. Pol Pot may had been right about one thing. 99% of communist party elites, especially those of European or N.American origin, would have been shot right between the eyes. Because they truly became the blood suckers of the workers they were misleading. And look at them now!

How can those people ever read Marx & Engels and get it so wrong? How can you avert from reconstructing capitalism when you replicate bit by bit every social structure capitalism ever developed. The university, or education system in general, 100% capitalist, the health system/hospital industrial model, the centralization of administration of all "public" affairs? Even police and armies were organized as carbon copies of capitalist ones. Industry? You can replicate a Ford plant but leave Ford out and that is anti-capitalism. WRONG! You replicate the plant you created capitalism. Who ever controls and manages the plant is THE CAPITALIST!

The only reason Ford created the plant was to produce profit. Why did the Soviets produce Lada Volga and Stolichnaya? Why not have each commune district dictate what they need manufactured and organize their own manufacturing to address their own needs? Because those decisions are made and controlled centrally, at air conditioned offices like those in NY, London, Paris. I know DC is the capital officially, but the true Kapital is NY!

@Heretical_i @Yogthos

@heretical_i practising something on individual level is just being a liberal. Communism is fundamentally about collective action. Something an actual communist would understand.

This partly explains how Brummell's neckcloths were so clean! His were either superfine cambric or fine Irish muslin (he had both). To my blind friends, sometimes, the printed s looked like f during that time, hence the muflin, foap, etc.

I apologise for the negative post, as it's not usually like me.
I've done a great job of filtering out the non-English posts, and even most of the vulgarity. Now, I need to do something about the constant Marxist/Communist/Leftist junk in my timeline. I didn't join so I could be your comrade and commiserate on the evils of capitalism, or talk about people getting killed, or on the feminist front, how bad men are, or on the race front, how bad white people are, or how good or bad this politician is, or whatever people want to complain about this week! Where are the normal people who post things about pets or animals in general, gardening/plants, their daily lives, good food or drink, clothing, music, theatre, going to interesting places, good times with friends, interesting discoveries, etc? I won't go back to Facebook because of inaccessibility, but at least my timeline there was pleasant! Perhaps, I just need to review my friends and make sure that those whom I want to see more often have higher priority or some such. I'm adding some tags that probably don't belong here, in the hopes of attracting those who share some of my interests. I wrote an introduction and pinned it to my profile for those interested.

in reply to Georgiana Brummell

While users (at least on friendica.world) don't have advanced filtering options, I was able to solve myproblem. I went back to the Friendica site, and then to contacts. I clicked on each one, and in most cases, I changed the channel setting so that I would see all posts. for the ones that I really don't want to miss anything from, I changed the notification so that will be notified for each post the contact makes. On TweeseCake, this gives me three options. I could either read the Home timeline as always, switch to notifications, or switch to Mentions. I don't know why new posts are appearing in Mentions without anyone tagging me, but ah well. The last wo options will focus on the contacts whose posts I want to see the most. In all cases, but especially the second and third, I have eliminated the types of posts I don't wish to see from anyone. It took a long time, but my timeline is now clean and pleasant.
