Of course they are all fake frog news! In the original story (which the AI of course couldn't be bothered to cite) the princess does NOT kiss the frog but yeet it at the wall instead, which -- unlike a kiss -- unleashed enough power to remove the curse and reveal the prince. That Avian Intelligence should not watch too many Disney movies. They're not accurate! 😉

@doctormo I'm not sure, if I understand you correctly, since english is not completely native language to me. The original story is "Der Eiserne Heinrich" (Iron Henry) by Gebrüder Grimm (Brothers Grimm). In that story the frog is thrown against the wall by the princess and thus released from his curse.
This was meant to teach children that negative emotions have to be known/spoken out/communicated to be able to heal.
There's no kissing any frog in the original story. What would that teach children? It's okay to be raped, after all he's a prince? I think we all can agree, that would be bullshit.

@doctormo @walsonde unrelated to the original story, but the "yeet frog" reminded me about Garulfo, a french comic about a frog becoming a prince (and a prince becoming a frog), from Alain Ayroles and Bruno Maïorana.
Here's the scene where the princess is mad at frogs after contracting herpes after trying to kiss one of them.
Guess the frog runs a blog and wrote some articles about those "sources" and the Avian Intelligence read it ^^

I really thought for long minute if I should keep the 'happy accident' in the official version, and then, for being honest to my original scenario, I fixed it. #WritersCoffeeClub 7, What future writing goals are you working towards with your present work?
I want to get the entire arch of the series down in more details. Currently, I have outlines, fragments, and sketches, but I need a clearer grasp on it. So, I should be writing on, instead of editing, but the chaos monkey that is my brain decided to latch onto some details of book 4. Which isn't bad, it requires a bit of rewriting, but it might not be super efficient.

Fortunately I am Solitary by Practice and also in life, so the only real preparation I have is for myself. I feel that this time of the year is a good time to be solitary. It is like hibernating, including the occasional stir to see the World, before going back to hibernating.
It can be good for creativity, and for the soul.

Yes, it's a good time for introspection, self-care, and shadow work. I often wonder if that's why having to visit parent, in-laws, etc, can feel so forced for many this time of year. Not that I don't adore my family, but I wonder if it's why we all feel an urge to hibernate.

But Witch law, is ruthless, structureless, ever-changing, wild, and vengeful.

In the real world, or our World, there are Covens that are vicioulsy transphobic, and entire paths that are historically homophobic, such as Gardnerian and Alexandrian Re homophobia and Dianic which is still transphobic.
The flip side of the coin is Reclaiming which while not being wiccan is very inclusive. Although they do have some problematic aspects...

Yes, I'm aware. It's something I do not comprehend, though. But I have encountered it in the wild a few times. I did some hand fastening ceremonies this spring for some lovely LGBTQ couples, and some ladies told me they weren't comfortable with it, as this time should be about fertility.
I very literally believe in the fertility of love.
There are of course covens with problematic convictions in Ethereal, as well, and Witch law isn't always rational.

Have you ever tried scent therapy, against SAD? It's very basically seeking the scents that strongly remind you of sunshine and doing a bit of meditation. A friend of mine combines the smell of fresh cut grass and sunscreen.

If I focus on my writing WIP point, you'd assume it's the Army of Lucid Dreamers.
They seem like plain old villains at first but as you progress through the story you shift the blame around, they become Anti-Villains for a while, until we're left with no one to fight. Ultimately, it's a struggle against the damage a patriarchal culture does to men's mental health. It's a cycle that needs to be broken.

That is certainly an example, yes.
Though this story focusses on what it does to decent, kind, intelligent men. The damage that's easily overlooked. How the lack of self-care and asking for help can drive them towards depression and addiction.

In my case the story will be one of taking a wonderful kind person, and twists them into a caricature of themselves causing a mild form of neuroligical damage in the process.
It will hopefully remind the reader that perpetrators can also be, in a sense, victims too.

I'm going to keep on about this; for all of you who want to see fedi grow, for all of you who opine about Black communities leaving or not showing up here at all because of the racism, this is why.
Not one day after mas.to/@markwyner/115489852379… , not one day after saying how sad it made them and how they wish to prevent a recurrence, *another* Nazi account (with white supremacy hate speech and slurs in the username) signed up on mas.to and started directly tagging people with violent images.
Moderation. It’s a roller coaster.Today, a (literal) nazi opened an account and began harassing people. We received ~80 reports within minutes. That may be a record.
We suspended the account, of course. But not before a lot of people yelled at us. For the record, this is not preventable when registration is open. We can only react. So be nice.
My gratitude and love for the person behind this report. It made me chuckle. 🫶🏻

And AS I'M WRITING THIS another account with the same username just got reported, it signed up on mstdn.plus , another open sign up instance, and was tagging people.
People keep asking how to prevent this. What tech solutions can be put in place. People mention username filtering coming in the next Masto update.
All of those are work-arounds to what is essentially a PEOPLE problem, not a tech problem. The problem is that we, globally, are FAR too lenient when considering safety.

White people, especially white guys, especially cis white guys, have no fucking clue about what safety online looks like because they've never had to experience the kind of targeted abuse a Black queer disabled person will get online. They won't close sign ups because they don't acknowledge the full scale of the harm that seeing a N-slur username actually does to people, they think it's fine to do clean-up after the fact instead of prevention.

- success to you? Okay - then let it grow slowly and safely. Let it grow in a way that prioritises the safety of our most marginalised members instead of opening the floodgates to get as many people in as possible then kicking the shitheads out AFTER they've caused a bunch of harm to the tens, hundreds, thousands of marginalised people who caught a glimpse of their hate on their feed.
That is not success, that is failure. That is not being an ally, that is not 'punching nazis'.
So now I have to sit here, and the mods of other safe instances have to sit here, today, with the remote accounts page open refreshing it periodically, watching for Nazi usernames to block them as soon as we can, because open sign up instances refuse to do the right thing.

We have closed register because we prefer to have some filter, an as we are small, slow growth is better for our resources.
Luckily, as we are small, we are no target to harassment, although that could change.
As you said, people keep putting faith in technology to resolve social challenges. Instead of creating confidence networks, which would be a benefit in many ways.
@marcelcosta While we're nowhere near the size of the biggest instances on fedi, we're still pretty big, and we have closed sign ups (with the 'give a reason for joining' field enabled) and we grow at a healthy pace.
I think this is one of the best decision we took for our mental health.

If I repeatedly see content (posts, names, etc) which breaks the rules of my instance, from any instance, I will first report, but after a time just block the instance.
Only if we are predictable in our doing, we can ask others to trust us.

We try to find a balance between cutting off the worst offenders while not cutting off access to the biggest communities and their potential audiences and income sources; that's why we limit these huge instances instead of blocking. Their inaction is, in many ways, continuously punishing marginalised people.

Now obviously the instance policy is not the doing of that sole mod so no, he's not individually responsible for what happened. But the team is.
Open registration makes so much more work for the rest of us, putting the burden on the network of smaller instances to clean things up due to the few massive instances that, as @welshpixie pointed out, prioritize growth over safety in their choice to maintain open registration.
Several notorious serial harassers who show up in fediblock literally every week wouldn't be able to keep up their harassment without instances like mas.to, mastodon.social, mstdn.social, and others with open registration. That policy allows these stalkers to make hundreds (not an exaggeration) of alt accounts for free, quickly.
Their large size also punishes our users when we are forced to defed them to keep our users safe, cutting them off from many mutuals and also limiting the reach of their fundraising posts (which as I have previously stated are more prevalent on BQL due to the impact of employment discrimination, institutional racism, etc on all Black queers).
This is what it means to enable abuse. This is what complicity looks like. It brings me no joy to have to say this, but it's the truth.

I thought the same thing for years now! When a better show would be just... hmm, not letting them in in the first place! Besides, people love exclusive clubs. Being able to tag arbitrary people without them following you means you can contact everyone.
That’s an unsolved problem.
Harassers seems to have noticed that by now.
If you want people efforts against harassment to have a chance, it must be possible to disable that feature: people under attack must be able to set "only allow mentions by people I follow".
If a single open sign up instance can put everyone in danger, that’s a structural problem.

Yeah, a large part of the reason I’m active on here in the first place is because the moderation’s generally both quick and good. That takes work, and I’m glad we’ve got people who care doing it. @markwyner
I sent him a DM asking him to close registrations as well. (We're mutuals)

But he is not a hero either. This whole episode could have been prevented with closed registrations. Do we really have to pretend someone is a hero if they stopped something that was totally preventable, _after_ the damage was done?
@heinragas this troll was deliberately trying to sow discord between instances, I think it's important we don't play in their hands.
Not being a moderator I don't know what's the tradeoff WRT registrations and how much work does it entail to review them, so I'm not qualified to comment on that.

IMO, if you can't be civil with a mod, maybe you shouldn't be on Fedi, full stop - but I can see extending a little grace to somebody having a bad day.

@gabrielesvelto In general, I agree. But I do think it is right and necessary to encourage errant servers to improve their behaviour. Every "leak" makes every other server less safe, after all.
And yes, reviewing signup requests is super easy. With abuse reports there's a lot of context you need to investigate, and that's simply not present in a signup request.
Of course, this no guarantee that there will be no more abuse, but experience learns that it does help immensely.
Always grateful to mods—without mods there would be no Mastodon!
thank you both for leading by example what distributed, collaborative moderation looks like. There's a lot of newer fedinerds, myself included, who set up servers for their communities not fully knowing what they'd got themselves into. I think high-visibility, active folks like you are crucial to the health of the fediverse just by existing and being your good selves. I'm grateful for you.

I have an apology to issue. Yesterday, I called out a few large, open-registration instances (mastodon.social, vivaldi.net, and mas.to).
I was ticked off because (once again) a blatant Nazi troll account sent me (and several other folx) swastika photos and hate-speech.
I'm not apologizing for calling out large, open-signup instances. I stand by every word I said. But there's something I *didn't* say, and that's what I believe I owe an apology for.
When you have as many followers as I do, it's easy to start a dogpile—even unintentionally—and because of this, I always try to include a "be kind, don't attack folx" message when I rant about something. Yesterday I forgot to do that, and some mods and admins caught shit for it. It was my responsibility to anticipate my (sometimes overly) enthusiastic followers' reactions and head that off, and I failed to.
If you were one of the people yesterday who sent reports or messages that attacked *any* of the moderation team members of those servers, I would love it if you'd apologize to them. They're all volunteers, just like me, doing their best with what they've got. It's on all of us to make Fedi a safe space for each other.
To any of the wonderful volunteer moderators of Fedi who got nasty messages yesterday—or don't wake up every day feeling appreciated for their work—I'm sorry 🫂 you deserve better. I appreciate you 💞
Update: two of the three above instances' admin teams have personally reached out to me about my original post—and that's amazing! I hope we can work together to make Fedi a safer, more inclusive space for everyone (except Nazis).

@Crovanian I started out on mastodon.social as well and contemplated a move for some time. Did it recently and it was way smoother than I thought it would be. You currently can't migrate your post history but it stays preserved on your old account.

(I already cancelled my Ars Technica subscription due to other issues earlier this year).
I also initially thought the luxury fashion and private island holiday magazines had nothing to do with me, but it turns out Condé Nast also own Ars Technica which I do read and I suspect a significant chunk of the Fediverse does too. Amplifying that fact could be helpful

Jon Brodkin basically wrote a very oriented article on Trans regret.
(Let's remind everyone that gender affirming surgery for Trans people has a lot less regret than most surgeries).
Aurich, who does the moderation on the front page also tolerates quite well "polite bigotry" and will ban people calling out the Nazi.
Last but not least, Eric Berger has turned into an Elon Musk shill, which has seriously degraded reporting around this aspect of Space.
(This is not the case of every staffer, Beth Mole is always a bright spot, well, her puns, because health news can be gruesome. But stellar job on her part.)
I've seen quite a few Ars old timer leave and cancel their subscription and the quality of comments degrades.

@Sobex @afewbugs Like virtuality all other tech news outlets, Ars is part of a massive corporate conglomerate. They have corporate interests and sponsors to please, ads to sell, and financial targets to meet. Ars also made deals with "AI" companies. Their writing staff is, therefore, not independent, and it shows.
You cannot simultaneously be part of big tech and share their interests, while also reporting on them fairly, openly, and critically.

On behalf of mod teams in general, thank you for saying this. It is so hard to balance the things we want and need to say against how people may interpret them, or what actions they'll likely take regardless of how they interpret them.
As an aside, I always love to talk moderation practices with people (this is an open invitation to the thread, other mods, etc.). Comms channels, policies, you name it. My notes usually end up in internal docs that can be used to inform either public-facing docs or blog posts, the goal being to help more mod teams combat stuff like this.

For all the bleating about the level of public debt in the UK, two things are worth stating:
a. right now we're back to the level of public debt (as a proportion of GDP) last seen in the 1960s... a time when the UK was doing pretty well & not the basket case public sector hawks might claim...

If your username contains a slur, hate-speech, or a well-known troll or dogwhistle reference, then it is a failure of your moderators and administration if that account ever sees the light of day.
If someone walks into your instance doing a Nazi salute and you don't slam the door in their face *hard* then you've let your community down.

I wonder if it would be possible to set things up so that it won't let you make an account with any words in a blacklist, and if anyone on an instance uses said any such word, the moderators are notified with the context and everything so they can decide whether to ban.

Currently, old posts will remain on the old instance, but followers and follows will move. There’s a draft standard for moving the posts as well, which would notify every instance that has fetched the posts with the new home. I think the expectation is that the old instance would forward to the new one for anything that just saved the URL, but it’s a while since I read the spec.

Followers of some asshat tried to Doxx me, he celebrated them doing so, marveled in it even.
Want me to send revealing pics to "proof" myself.
I reported it, nothing happend to him, but my account got hidden, and mods told me i had to stop harrasing the guy (which i wasnt) because he "was one of the good ones"
And when i migrated he celebrated "chasing me off" and called for his followers to "keep up the good work" they did with me...

this was the push I needed to leave @Vivaldi once and for all. I use their browser, email and sometimes their mastodon instance. No more. If they insist on letting Nazis in, then to hell with them. I will switch everything over to another browser, email service and just stick to my own instance. Might also #fediblock their instance.

idk fam yesterday i remote suspended a guy from mas.to that had a username of HeilHitler1488. the server software i use has a cool little thing that lets you prohibit words from the username. Perhaps a nazi signing up with a regular username would be a problem but like there's no excuse for slurs in usernames lol

If the vast majority of Nazis get told to fuck off before they ever get a chance to open their account, but one or two occasionally slip through the net and then are promptly told to fuck off once the mistake has been realised, I'm not sure I can ask for much more than that.

I don't think the pattern-matching block helps. If you can't sign up with the name you want, you'll just permute it until you can. And moderated registration probably puts off more people who are casually interested in the Fediverse than people who are willing to devote effort to harassment.
Ideally, you want a kind of soft block, where people who trigger that kind of pattern match get an account and can post, but they don't show up in live feeds, their replies to other posts are hidden / flagged / referred to moderators / something, and they can't DM people. They can shout into the void for a bit and then be banned. Or just left to scream into the void in a mode where you're effectively blocked by everyone.

@assimilateborg @courtcan @FediTips I spent a few hours over a few weeks trying to figure out how to cleanly migrate to another server. I almost made my own, but I'd probably have too much difficulty with federating. And it looks like my old account would just exist. Idk what would happen with the followers that interact with me. I'd need to ask each one to re-follow I guess.
I don't think the joinmastodon guide for transfers is clear enough or comprehensive enough, it leaves out some important steps.
I've done my own transfer guide at fedi.tips/transferring-your-ma… which has a lot of steps, but each step is hopefully easy to do 🙂 It also means you can transfer everything possible in one set of steps.

automatic signups is only viable if you have a top notch moderation, which most of fedi instances doesn't have

I just got casually hooked on it watching people bemoan their lost pets that they left outside when there are wild animals in my part of California that can find a pet to be a tasty snack. Sort of like that funny (that aren't really that funny) videos show.

makes me curious about the downsides of just defederating open-signup instances. lost followers? discoverability? third thing?
Depends how huge the userbase is on that instance is. Instance like Mastodon.social is so big that if you try to defederate it, you will lose lot of followers as well as account you follow.
At least for me, I have accounts I follow that are from that instance and the instance I'm on just "limit" it as it just too big to really do anything about it. Otherwise, I can imagine it just defederating it if it wasn't as big

@🅰🅻🅸🅲🅴 (🌈🦄) I'd say that about 50% of the accounts I've banned from my server are from mastodon.social. I think about defederating at least once a month.
@codingcatgirl I agree. I do sympathize with people who aren't willing to create an account if it'll need to be reviewed first, though. I certainly wouldn't bother in a lot of cases. Maybe if the server's average review time was displayed alongside the warning, making the request for a new account would be more appealing.

and apparently it's only applying to usernames, they can't just add global filters? like so much of the racist harassment on fedi could be dealt with by a simple regex script that auto mutes / reports users that type certain admin defined slurs, for example the n-word, this is basic moderation

I lost my phone, which contained my account recovery keys stored in a notes app. Now I can’t sign in because I don’t have the password or recovery codes. When trying to reset the password, the system only asks for those codes, ignoring the authenticator app. There’s also no option to verify through the authenticator and then delete the account data to allow a password reset.
The only thing that matters to me is my account's email address.

I know you're upset about what's going on. Me too. And, like me, I bet you frequently have that feeling of wanting to throw your hands up and say, "But what can I do about it?"
Let me give you one of the most powerful tools you can use to help fight bigotry. And it's a tool that only you can use, because any marginalized person who uses it will be seen as aggrieved and immediately discounted.
What is this amazing tool? I call it
Dude. Not cool.
This phrase. Commit it to memory (or something like it that's more in character for you). Use it when someone around you is being a bigot. It's not an angry phrase, it's more one you deliver with bafflement, like you're confused the bigot just said what they said.
Simple social disapproval, particularly coming from peers, friends, or coworkers at the same level, is powerful. We all want to belong. Clearly but subtly voicing your disapproval (it has to be clearly understood by the bigot, for this to work) makes a real difference.
For it to really be effective, we need everyone to be doing it. If every bigot out there always caught shade every time they said some bigoted thing, they would stop doing it. So spread the word.
Use this simple tool to tap into millions of years of evolutionary social training.
Racism? Dude, not cool.
Misogyny? Dude, not cool.
Homophobia? Dude, not cool.
It works. It's low-risk (please don't use it if it feels dangerous to do so, though). It can change the world.

and the best thing? It’s wildly contagious.
So many times I’ve seen a single “wow, not cool” have an immediate emboldening effect on other bystanders to speak up when they otherwise might have just uncomfortably looked away.
Nobody wants to be the odd one out or make things socially awkward, but I promise others are thinking the same as you are. Be brave and call your peers *in*.
Being called *in* is so much more powerful than being called out.

@SaucySwampHag That's an excellent point, one I didn't think about, but you're right. It usually just takes one person from the crowd around something awful happening to say "this isn't right" to galvanize many people into speaking out.
It's hard to be the first one to say something, but this is key to being a good ally: use your power (often your power is simply being an otherwise unremarkable onlooker in the crowd) to benefit those with less power.

Another option that I've found that works, albeit slightly more confrontational: "Why would you say that?/Was that necessary?" using the kindergarten teacher-/mom-tone works. The disapproval is made clear, and it makes the person have to defend what they've said. Once you make clear that you not only disagree with the bigotry, but expect them to explain why they think it's okay to act like that in a way that makes clear they won't be changing your mind on it, it shuts them down.
It may not always work (just like "dude, not cool" can have the inevitable "you're being too sensitive" outcome), but it's another powerful way to tell someone that their bullshit isn't welcome around you, and that you won't be putting up with it. I've had it work for me numerous times, not every time, but a majority of the time. ("What is wrong with you?" is a personal favorite but a confrontational one that I recognize isn't for everyone. I'm comfortable with that but I know not everyone is able to do that.)

Can confirm. This absolutely works. They get very awkward and try to explain - but if you keep asking questions the awkwardness gets worse.
And that awkwardness means it's working. It means they're trying to save face and are aware they're just digging deeper.

@elindur I also like using “what do you mean?” especially when someone thoughtlessly drops a micro aggression or makes a bigoted “joke”.
I make it really uncomfy by making them explain it. I feign not understanding and ask clarifying questions so they have to explain their “joke”… in detail.
Then I give them a disappointed “Oh. That doesn’t seem very funny at all.”

it works in other situations too. I was downtown, leaving a play and this guy in front of my wife and I heads towards some construction cones and a bobcat loader that’s part of some sidewalk demolition. It’s dark, few others around. He faces the loader and begins to unzip to piss on it. We’re walking by as he’s starting his unzip and in a low voice directed his way: “Dude, not cool.” He looks around, lowered head: “sorry.” Zips up and heads away. It’s so powerful.

Perhaps more confrontational, but I use it all the time: "Is this relevant to the story?" in response to:

*substitute any other non-majority group as well.

Almost always. I sometimes forget. I've been trying to boost more in general. Long time web usage has taught me "Don't fucking spam!", but spam's kinda how things work here. It still feels weird though.

"Rarely" in this case means "in less then 2% cases"... but of course, there may be hidden bias caused by some of other poll participants lying about what they do 😀
I think seeing a lot of "please boost for more reach" notes at the end of polls has taught me to do it automatically even when such a note is not present

Almost always, so I voted yes. There are some where it's contextually obvious that this poss *isn't* meant for wider distribution (e.g.: I take part in an ongoing writers'/creators' hashtag that sometimes tells participants to create a poll; boosting those beyond the hashtag wouldn't be appropriate IMO), but aside from such cases, "vote and then boost" is practically automatic. Like, voting in a poll feels to me like a 2-click operation, because I boost so routinely.

I used to post sexy nudes here on mastodon, but got basically no reactions or interaction ever, which makes sense - after all, how would anyone ever find my stuff among the deluge of bots reposting porn subreddits?
If I want to post nudes, the bots make it difficult for anyone to find me. If I want to find people, the bots make it hard to find anyone else.

Illegal in many jurisdictions, as it counts as revenge porn, and depending on the severity? This is the kind of thing that might prompt me to send someone's account information to the police, because we do that if we see someone committing a serious crime... Which non-consensually posting someone's nudes would be.
And I'm saying this as someone who thinks we should get over this weird nudity taboo that showed up in the past couple centuries.

I have wondered why credits are so often missing....
I'm sure the only reason those accounts exist is just for a really cheap way to gain followers and engagement on their accounts, 'cause lots of people like porn and such and don't really care about who actually made it.
Question: Do we also report the accounts that are posting people's nude photos without any obvious consent but are at least crediting the creator (some people out there have really decisive opinions when it comes to that edge case)?

What do you think the moderation tools on Fedi are for if not for moderating?
I've suspended so many accounts and defederated numerous servers for things ranging from child porn to Nazis to transphobes and racism to death threats to just plain shitty behavior that was making Fedi worse for other users.
As a mod, it's my fucking job to moderate. It's what I signed up for. And I *heartily* thank anyone who submits a good report with notes so that I can swiftly determine what the issue was and take steps to make it better. Every account I investigate and end up suspending for some horrible thing makes Fedi a better place for everyone.
And if your server has so many actively shitty accounts that reports are overwhelming moderators, then your server has worse problems than the reports.

Speaking on behalf of what I can pretty much assume is all #moderators on Mainstream Fedi...
If you see someone posting someone else's nudes, and there is clear non-consent, please use the report button and give us anh evidence you have.
Never assume we don't have the time, as it is literally moderation's job to look through and respond to posts which may violate rules. TBH, stopping stuff like revenge porn is one of our higher priorities, and while I haven't seen anyone do that particular offense here, if someone did, it would not be the first time I have sent a dump of all our information on someone to the police. (Note that we only do that for serious crimes like selling CSAM stolen data, and revenge porn is illegal in a lot of jurisdictions)
That said, TechHub is one of a few servers where posting porn in general is not allowed (we're literally "Safe to look at in the Office"), so I don't think we'd even need evidence to ban.
Either way, when in doubt, just report.

protecting women from exploitation /assault has always been "too much work".
I was a mod on a UK forum for about 10 years, then I was bumped up to admin, so I moderated the mods as well as dealing with legal issues
I did that for another 3 years
I remember the shock of seeing the unfiltered forum for the first time
I wouldn't do it again for a big clock
Some of the stuff mods have to deal with breaks you at times, it's just nasty
So even though you're not on my instance I'd like to say a heartfelt thank you for the work you do

fun tip if people are bored and/or don't know how to help stem the tide:
Spend some time browsing your server (local) timeline. You'll find them soon enough, especially on the bigger instances. Report, block and move along.
Also, keep an eye on yourself. If you start feeling uncomfortable during this - stop. This is about making this a safe place for everyone and potentially traumatizing yourself is *not* the intention here.

@lexinova If you think getting rid of accounts dedicated to posting copyrighted material, of people's naked bodies no less, is exhausting, you might be surprised how mentally taxing DMCA takedown or cease & desist letters can be.
When you think about it, moderating these accounts is just a way for server admins to protect themselves. There has to be just one creator with a decent lawyer and the will to litigate to ruin your whole week.

Agreed. If there's a server where moderation thinks posting someone's nudes against their wishes is okay, regardless of whether it's revenge porn or art theft, they're probably getting defederated from us.

As someone who is heavily involved with moderation on several servers, I'm going to say, we would generally rather get a report about something we can't take action on than not get a report on something we can.
It's pretty easy to sift through reports to be honest, and checking them out is what we are volunteering to do. Honestly, we don't get enough of them. Personally, I'm very uncomfortable with the idea that someone might be posting that here, and would really like to get reports of that.

@lexinova That is straight up ridiculous. Reporting actual problems isn't "spam". If somebody can't handle the responsibilities of running an instance, they shouldn't be running an instance. But speaking from experience, Alice is right: the best way to keep moderation load low is to run a tight ship. And people who run tight ships are grateful for accurate reports.

There was an instance I'm struggling to remember the name of that was a sex work instance that went down, it was swarmed with those bots and it made me sad how many porn bots and humans there were doing exactly that. 😮💨

My #neurospicy diagnosis, #schizotypal can be so profoundly insulting and demeaning. It degrades my thoughts, twists all of my existence into symptoms, and it pisses me off. It hurts that such a large part of what I enjoy about being who I am, is deemed a disorder. Even my vocabulary is a symptom. I adore my creative, overthinking, eccentric mind. It might make me less capable of conforming, but fuck, it's certainly where the colour in my spirit springs from.

So, that's in the cluster A of personality disorders....
There is a whoooooole bunch of internal debate in mental health about personality disorders because they're mostly behavior patterns rather than actual mental distress.
Aside from cluster B, which can be varying degrees of antagonistic to other people, "personality disorders" are mostly harmless. And technically, they should only be diagnosed if they're causing the individual distress.

Most of the time, the social interaction piece is about good communication and finding healthy means of reciprocation and balance. Not conformity (IMO).

Social interactions are a mixed bag. Coworkers might require more conforming, while friends are indeed more of a reciprocation dance.
Is it strange that I respect my personal distress? I value the full spectrum of my emotions. It feels like an insult to existence and consciousness not to. Even if that does require a lot from me, I wouldn't want to numb that. That is precisely me, being me.

One of the things that I love about putting all my folk tale translations into a wiki is that I am also using this as an opportunity to remove another #Google service from my life.
My old interactive map was done with Google MyMaps:

My new interactive map (still a work in progress) is created dynamically by a combination of #MediaWiki with the #SemanticMediaWiki and Maps extensions, and displayed via the #Leaflet API (which uses #OpenStreetMaps ).

it would be great to see a detailed write up of how you put this together. I do like me some interactive mapping.
I am currently traveling, but the basics can be found here. The important parts are:
1. Install the Maps and SemanticMediaWiki extensions for MediaWiki
2. Put coordinate information on each relevant page you want to show up on the map
3. Do a semantic query over the relevant categories, and display the results on a Leaflet map
If you want to do something similar, I can give you my code snippets.

So for the next few days it is tea, cleansing my apartment and then light my Altar with some candles and incense.
It is annoying that the flu couldn't have waited a couple of weeks, as I normally get the vaccine around this time in October!

Well, there was a moon out there somewhere, but I only managed to catch a couple of twinkles of wet starlight, so I whispered to them.
I do enjoy starlight for such purposes, it feels vast and endless, making the unhealthy thoughts seem less significant and thus easier to let go.
