When reading a #Forth tutorial, a lot of time is usually spent explaining RPN and the data and return stack, which are extremely easy to understand for most people having been exposed to some sort of STEM subjects. Then, examples pop up with words like “IMMEDIATE” and “POSTPONE” which it seems the author thinks the reader finds just as easy, while using jargon not used outside Forth programming. This is my attempt at writing the explanation I wish I had found a long time ago, written so I can better my own understanding.

1.0 Compilation

Forth words are very much like sub-routines, but just as the Forth machine has two modes, interpretation and compilation, Forth words may be thought of as having interpretation semantics and compilation semantics. The literal “5” will during interpretation have the value 5 pushed on to the data stack, but during compilation, it will simply have code which will push 5 appended to whatever word is currently being compiled. This is the case of most words, with one major exception being control flow words.

1.1 Control flow

Control flow words execute during compilation, pushing and popping references to and from the control flow stack (which may or may not be implemented using the data stack). A word like “IF” has no standards defined interpretation semantics at all. “IF” will as well as appending the “IF” test to the current word, push to the control flow stack a forward reference for where it's going to jump. That forward reference can then be resolved by an “ELSE” or “THEN” later in the source code. Words which execute during compilation, are called immediate.

2.0 IMMEDIATE

Set the compilation semantics of the last defined word to be its interpretation semantics.

4.0 Putting it together

“POSTPONE” compiles whatever the next word would have done during compilation into the current word. “IMMEDIATE” makes the last defined word behave during compilation as it does during interpretation.

4.1 An example

Let us assume there exists an ALGOL fandom and define:

: FI POSTPONE THEN ; IMMEDIATE

In other words, when running “FI”, run the compilation semantics of “THEN”, and by the way, let “FI” be a word where the interpretation semantics becomes the compilation semantics. So, “FI” is now a word which during compilation behaves exactly as “THEN”. Using “SEE” on a word containing “FI” will only show the “THEN” which has been compiled into that word.

Herinnering aan oktober 2014

Nederland liet in 2014 een groep mensen in de steek in Afghanistan, mensen die voor Defensie gewerkt hadden en hun leven na vertrek van de Nederlanders niet zeker waren. Zoals de tolken die onze militairen geholpen hadden.

Een van hen is de heer Ahmadzai. In 2014 voerden we actie om hem en zijn gezin veilig te stellen:

"Stap 1 is gezet: Fred Teeven heeft besloten de asielaanvraag van Ahmadzai Help Abdul Ghafoor Ahmadzai aan een verblijfsvergunning toch in behandeling te nemen.
Nu afwachten wanneer de IND klaar is met onderzoek.
Ondertussen blijft tekenen van de petitie wél belangrijk. Laat zien dat je mededogen kent en vóór een goede regeling voor mensen die in dienst van het Nederlandse leger risico's hebben gelopen en niet terug kunnen naar hun land."

Nu (al bijna 11 jaar later) staat de petitie nog steeds online met een dankwoord en een tekening van de kinderen van Abdul Ahmadzai.

Ik voerde destijds redelijk stevig actie op Twitter om hen te helpen. Toen was Twitter nog redelijk sociaal.

Vandaag beleefde ik iets moois in Gemeente Baarn.

Mijn vriendin Renas kreeg van de burgemeester haar officiële toekenning van het Nederlandse staatsburgerschap!

Dat op zich was al een feestelijke gebeurtenis!Toen wij het Gemeentehuis uitkwamen en in de Laanstraat liepen, feliciteerde ik Renas nog eens extra en zei; nu ben je een echte Nederlandse.

Een mevrouw die vlak bij ons liep, hoorde dat en feliciteerde haar spontaan. Dat was op zich al heel erg leuk!

Maar...
toen wij in de koffiewinkel met elkaar (5 mensen) koffie dronken om het Nederlanderschap van Renas te vieren, stapte opeens diezelfde mevrouw weer op ons af en zei dat ze het zo fijn vond voor Renas, dat ze haar en ons op de koffie trakteerde (alle 5) om te laten zien dat er in Nederland óók vriendelijke mensen zijn.

Paf...
dan ben je even stil en blij. Dank je wel onbekende mevrouw, je hebt ons vandaag een heel mooi cadeau gegeven.

Na bijna 60 jaar eindelijk het vervolg!

Wat een heerlijk verhaal van Tonke Dragt blijft dit toch. Aanrader voor ieder kind dat van avonturen houdt. (en volwassenen ook hoor).

Gekocht bij Boekhandel Den Boer Baarn in Baarn waar ze nog niet wisten dat er op Facebook een Fanclub van Tonke Dragt is.

Toen ik dat vertelde, zei de mevrouw aan de kassa direct: Dat is goed om te weten, dan kunnen we andere lezers dat ook vertellen.

Ter plekke verzon ik ook de oplossing voor mijn dilemma "wat gebeurt er na mijn dood met mijn verzameling boeken van Tonke Dragt?"
