yes and I don’t know what we should do with that realisation. But we should stop acting like things are going to get better because people will wake up or something. That is just not going to happen anytime soon.
(I think people in general will have to find out the hard way)
"Maybe THIS billionaire won't be a libertarian whackjob huffing his own farts and he'll act in MY best interests..."
I mean, the rust belt voted for Trump a second term, hoping he'll help them out THIS time...
not just fact checking and moderation, but also throwing diversity rules to the side.
What we need to do is generate a culture where those sites and apps are seen as a culture of stupidity, unreliable for even basic information, we could even flood it with shitposts that make them unusable. (Though the latter seems pointless)

Not necessary
Just send everyone who doesnt want to be a willing victim this,
fediverse.info
The fediverse is a new social protocol for everyone, a diverse community of interconnected social platforms powered by ActivityPub.fediverse.info
All these tools can and need to be open source and in the regulated public domain. We need to stop the grifting and the manipulation… it is getting out of hand.
This hypothesis is far ahead of is antithesis in my counting.)
Book recommendation on this topic:
Doctorow, Cory (2023) - Internet Con. How to Seize the means of computation
yes, they are removing moderation because of "free speech", and then start censoring the crap out of it.
Mention on FB or Instagram that you are leaving and then add a link to your pixelfed or mastodon account, apparently results in an instant ban.
Become a server and host sites for the resistance.
Hint: they aren't very smart and can't think outside the box. Don't use IO port 80.
I’ve started to see that open source, decentralised social media is the answer.
Although, social media in general is very much an amplification of people, and algorithms speed up the polarisation and echo chamber characteristics. Not sure how to fix that though 😭
When people "get" how much we are indoctrinated into our values and priorities via socialization…it's a game changer. my favorite example is how millions of US soldiers went to "fight against fascism" in WWII, and came home and continued to oppress certain groups…without any self awareness.
to paraphrase: it's the social hierarchies, stupid.
Hint: all cultures touched by colonization will have lots of sick values baked right into them.
> And are people asking another billionaire to build alternative social media?
This comes from the same place as people who say "A dictatorship or absolute monarch is the best form of governance, the only problem to date is picking the wrong people to be dictators and absolute monarchs, not the idea of a single, unrestrained ruler beholden to nobody."
IMHO we should start using blogs, mailing lists, forums, and RSS feeds in addition to social media.
Perhaps we should use something like proper backups, 3-2-1. Three copies of your content, posted on two different media systems, with one copy kept on your own host site.
Maybe videos on YouTube, PeerTube, and through a torrent from local storage?
Blog posts on ko-fi, self hosted website, ???
Good news! Blogs, mailing lists, forums, and RSS feeds haven't gone away! Both the tech and the usage are still there.
Rather than worrying about convincing people to leave siloed social media in large groups, I recommend moving over and using what you enjoy, so that when you're inevitably asked to help others do the same, you have the knowledge!
What was fundamentally different before modern social media was that hosts and providers were only that, and did not profit from user content, so they had little motive other than policing to interfere with it.
Imagine if your phone company could profit from what you say on the phone, and how often, and who hears it. That's the reality we're in right now online. The profit motives of commercial hosts in a minimally regulated mediascape inescapably lead to such manipulation.
Indeed.
And thank you for saying it in the Fediverse 👌
To be fair - I would not notice you in Mainstream Media either way.
The tech bro billionaires are so innovative, right? 🤣 Also on their apparent agenda is that diversity and inclusion doesn’t matter any more. Or at least should be downplayed. To me it smells like a campaign to try and get off the MAGA theocrat naughty list.
#TechBro #billionaire #MAGA #DEI #diversity #inclusion #equity #LGBTQ #neurodiversity #transgender #values
*Are* people asking this? I just may not be in the places to have heard such requests, but so far I haven't.
I'd also add IRC to your list, since it's still out there.
But as someone already mentioned, the problem is in discoverability - it’s really hard to break through google. Also, more recent problem, AI scrapping. And law is far behind it, or decides to be far behind because it is profitable.
Somewhere I hope we are entering the post-social-media era, and ppl will turn more to real world.
Meta Risks Mass Exodus: Is #HelloQuitMeta the Next Viral Movement?
Meta's recent decision to allow claims of mental illness towards LGBT+ individuals on its platforms has sparked a wave of outrage. This new moderation policy, announced by Mark Zuckerberg, now permits labeling a person as "weird" or "mentally ill" based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, under the guise of free speech.
This conservative shift by Meta could have disastrous consequences, similar to those observed on X (formerly Twitter) with the HelloQuitX movement (helloquitx.com/). Indeed, this decision not only risks violating European and French law but also alienating a large portion of its user base, particularly sensitive to issues of discrimination and inclusion.
In light of this situation, one wonders if a "HelloQuitMeta" movement might emerge, prompting users to massively abandon Meta's platforms. This phenomenon could represent a serious setback for the company, both in terms of image and advertising revenue. At a time when social networks are closely scrutinized for their handling of hate speech, Meta is playing a dangerous game that could prove costly.

Update3: we tested it in comments and my friends worked but when I commented back, it was removed again. See screenshots.

in reply to Mastodon Migration • • •this smells slightly fishy (but just slightly) because like, that post is so concise and there's not a smidgen of legitimate concern you could find to justify what an algorithm might've thought was wrong with it. it's difficult to attributes ignorance to what only resembles pure malice. and I feel that if they genuinely want to silence this kind of stuff, they wouldn't be sending notifications like this admitting to it. because holy shit that looks bad for them.
has anyone else reproduced this result? i don't want to believe it just at face value from one person because, despite how much I may hate facebook, I do genuinely think they would be more competent at hiding their actions than depicted.

AJ Sadauskas
in reply to Mastodon Migration • • •@sodiboo So just to clarify, this *was* a reproduction of the issue.
A user named Danielle Gembala complained about trying to share a link to Pixelfed and was blocked: bsky.app/profile/ddmgembala.bs…
So I logged into a Facebook account I barely use to try to recreate the issue.
My post read: "Anyone here use Pixelfed?" plus a link to Pixelfed.social (screenshot 1).
Within 3 seconds, a full screen dialogue popped up saying my post had been removed (screenshot 2).
I tapped the "See why" button and it claimed the post had been removed because of "misleading links or content to trick people to visit, or stay on, a website" (screenshot 3).
I tapped the "See rule" link and was shown another dialogue box claiming the link was spam (screenshot 4).
I haven't previously posted a link to Pixelfed from Facebook, and my previous interaction on the site was when I liked a post in July 2024. So it wasn't the result of bombarding people with links and posts.
Asking if anyone here uses Pixelfed with a link to the main instance of Pixelfed isn't a post where the text misleads about the content of the link.
And given it was 3 seconds between posting and the removed post dialogue, we can rule out a spam complaint or human moderation.

in reply to AJ Sadauskas • • •And given another user had already complained about their link to Pixelfed being blocked (that's the whole reason I tried replicating it!), we can rule out that this was an isolated incident.
So the Facebook algorithm was definitely blocking links to pixelfed.social.
(Which is why I chose to begin my post with the word CONFIRMED. Because I'd independently confirmed the earlier post.)
Very best case scenario, whoopsies! The Facebook algorithm was accidentally blocking links to a competitor without human intervention.
Not a great look, given Zuckerberg's interview the same day and Meta's recent monopoly antitrust cases.
And worst case scenario, there was human intervention because someone within Meta (not necessarily senior) got jumpy about people talking about a competitor.
Either way, not a great look for Meta.

in reply to AJ Sadauskas • • •I can absolutely see how a rush of people moving to pixelfed now the apps are on the public stores and sharing their new location for photos could have triggered the actual spam filters seeing a new URL etc.
But I haven’t had anything confirmed that was it, so I’m not going to run around saying that was it. With how Zuckerberg is acting right now and his history in being a shitcunt, and FB’s history in A-B testing their users with intentional battery drains or positive/negative feeds, and spying on them, it absolutely is very plausibly him blocking it by decision.
