yes and I don’t know what we should do with that realisation. But we should stop acting like things are going to get better because people will wake up or something. That is just not going to happen anytime soon.

What we need to do is generate a culture where those sites and apps are seen as a culture of stupidity, unreliable for even basic information, we could even flood it with shitposts that make them unusable. (Though the latter seems pointless)

yes, they are removing moderation because of "free speech", and then start censoring the crap out of it.
Mention on FB or Instagram that you are leaving and then add a link to your pixelfed or mastodon account, apparently results in an instant ban.
I’ve started to see that open source, decentralised social media is the answer.
Although, social media in general is very much an amplification of people, and algorithms speed up the polarisation and echo chamber characteristics. Not sure how to fix that though 😭
IMHO we should start using blogs, mailing lists, forums, and RSS feeds in addition to social media.
Perhaps we should use something like proper backups, 3-2-1. Three copies of your content, posted on two different media systems, with one copy kept on your own host site.
Maybe videos on YouTube, PeerTube, and through a torrent from local storage?

Good news! Blogs, mailing lists, forums, and RSS feeds haven't gone away! Both the tech and the usage are still there.
Rather than worrying about convincing people to leave siloed social media in large groups, I recommend moving over and using what you enjoy, so that when you're inevitably asked to help others do the same, you have the knowledge!
What was fundamentally different before modern social media was that hosts and providers were only that, and did not profit from user content, so they had little motive other than policing to interfere with it.
Imagine if your phone company could profit from what you say on the phone, and how often, and who hears it. That's the reality we're in right now online. The profit motives of commercial hosts in a minimally regulated mediascape inescapably lead to such manipulation.

Indeed, this decision not only risks violating European and French law but also alienating a large portion of its user base, particularly sensitive to issues of discrimination and inclusion.
In light of this situation, one wonders if a "HelloQuitMeta" movement might emerge, prompting users to massively abandon Meta's platforms. This phenomenon could represent a serious setback for the company, both in terms of image and advertising revenue. At a time when social networks are closely scrutinized for their handling of hate speech, Meta is playing a dangerous game that could prove costly.

update2: Tried again, this time it worked, writing a longer post and putting the words in apostrophes.
Update3: we tested it in comments and my friends worked but when I commented back, it was removed again. See screenshots.

has anyone else reproduced this result? i don't want to believe it just at face value from one person because, despite how much I may hate facebook, I do genuinely think they would be more competent at hiding their actions than depicted.

And given it was 3 seconds between posting and the removed post dialogue, we can rule out a spam complaint or human moderation.

So the Facebook algorithm was definitely blocking links to pixelfed.social.
(Which is why I chose to begin my post with the word CONFIRMED. Because I'd independently confirmed the earlier post.)
Very best case scenario, whoopsies! The Facebook algorithm was accidentally blocking links to a competitor without human intervention.
Not a great look, given Zuckerberg's interview the same day and Meta's recent monopoly antitrust cases.
And worst case scenario, there was human intervention because someone within Meta (not necessarily senior) got jumpy about people talking about a competitor.
Either way, not a great look for Meta.

I think that - for whatever reason - very short status updates are detected as spam by the automatons, even though a human would know otherwise.

As a regular Facebook post.
I've documented what happened in greater depth elsewhere.
But basically there was another user who posted that they had tried to post a link to Pixelfed on Facebook and were blocked.
To verify their claim, I tried writing a simple post on my newsfeed asking "Anyone here use Pixelfed?" with a link to Pixelfed dot social.
My last interaction on the site was in July 2024, so definitely no spamming in terms of volume.
Within 3 seconds, I got an automated response.
Jason Koebler from 404 Media tried the same thing, and got the same result: 404media.co/meta-is-blocking-l…
A number of other tech news sites, including Engadget, began running the story: engadget.com/social-media/meta…
At this point, Meta acknowledged it had been blocking links to Pixelfed "by mistake". It no longer seems to be doing it 😊
