@greensofshade I didn't miss this, although I now wish I had. The problem with Merz is that he falls short even in this regard. While Trump at least seems to be able to appeal to the less-educated masses, Merz has about as much appeal as the husk of a desiccated shed snake skin. He didn't get elected for his appeal, but despite it. Of course, in all other regards he is as much a failure at everything as Trump—including his inability to face an uncomfortable truth.
Half of WW2 was fought in Europe. Their cities were devastated and their populations killed by the millions. They understand suffering in ways the US, UK and Australia don't.

This in now officially the time of year that I have to actively resist starting seeds. It feels like it might not be too early... but it is unless you want crazy leggy plants. But I'm starting my #garden plan today. The plan's to do some succession planting to get some early season, main season, and overwintering crops. Gonna figure out a bunch of cool #tomatoes to grow and I'll need at least one weird #squash. Open to suggestions! 🌱🍅

I don't believe that the average German voting afd is a Nazi like many far left people say, I think that, that is just insulting the intelligence of the average German. In many cases it requires going deeper at the root of the problem, being, fear, fear that your children won't be able to afford groceries, fear that your children could be murdered at school, fear that the once politically strong but peaceful Germany is not even asked an opinion on the war that is happening next door.
My point is that people are just tired of all of that and are looking for change, any change, that's what happened in the United States really because Trump is far from having the best policies. To me it is clear that the same is happening here, unaffordable houses, irrelevance on the political stage. Now wherever it is good or bad, I am neutral, it doesn't matter to me all that much, I don't have the citizenship, I'm really just stating my opinion on the why this is happening.
(As a non-German) Agreed, but strategically I'd advocate more against BSW than AfD at this point. The far right is in and at second place anyways and a concerted effort in messaging might keep them down a couple of seats at most.
Meanwhile whether or not BSW get 4.9% or 5.0% decides the fate of 36 Bundestag seats from going either all to the populist pro-Russia anti-environment crazies - or being split between the one crazy, one crazy-cooperative and 3-4 normal parties.

It’s been a while since we last were treated to a piece from our resident artist, @n69n (aka illustrator Norn Cutson). This is in fact the last piece we have from Norn (at least for The List as it currently stands), so I was sort of selfishly hanging onto it, to save for a metaphorical rainy day. Well, no time like the present. Also, I picked today because it’s the 15th anniversary of the utterly brilliant Lee Alexander McQueen leaving us. McQueen designed the satin kimono dress Björk is wearing on the album cover, specifically as per Björk’s request to make her look like a warrior who fights with love, and to reference a photo of model Devon Aoki in a McQueen dress (taken by Nick Knight, who was also the photographer for the album cover). Echoes of McQueen’s collaboration with Björk for Homogenic would then be seen in his collection that soon followed, the A/W 1997-98 “Eclect Dissect” couture collection for Givenchy (who he was the head designer for at the time). I know we’re here for the music, but Björk and McQueen are two of my favourite artists from any medium, and them working together is just one of those moments of absolute magic.
Anyway, the cover tribute seen below is number 28 in Norn’s fabulous “Record Collection” series, which imho further increases the magic of this moment (I, for one, have a print of this piece right by my record player). Make sure you check out their previous spotlights here, as well as Norn’s Redbubble shop to see some of their other work (which includes some other wonderful Björk pieces). And I suppose I should say something about the music? Homogenic was Björk’s third studio album, and, nearly 30 years after its release, the tracklist essentially reads as a greatest hits list. A departure from the more danceable art pop of Post (1995), this album amps up what Björk and other Icelandic artists do so well, i.e., translating the breathtaking beauty of their country into sonic form. While the album is primarily electronica/trip hop, the real standout features are the gorgeous strings provided by the Icelandic String Octet and, of course, Björk’s inimitable vocals. It’s emotional, it’s dramatic, it’s a pure masterpiece.
If you haven’t heard this album before, you’re in for an absolute treat.

I had this happen a few times too. When I have written a post, I first copy the text to the clipboard and then I try to send it. If it works, then it's OK. If it doesn't work, I will have the text saved to try it again later. But I really hope you're right and this will be fixed sooner, rather than later. I am sitting in a cat tree in the house where I am living. I am waiting at the counter for the man to give me breakfast. And he doesn't seem to notice that I'm hanging in the kitchen. More important is how I’m submitting content to those Piefed communities. From pixelfed.social and atomicpoet.org, I’m uploading photos from those two servers: pixelfed.social is my own artwork; atomicpoet.org is interesting art I stumble upon. After I upload a photo, I give it a description in a post, then tag it with the community “username” I want it to submit it towards.
Once the post is live, the originating server sends the post over to Piefed, and Piefed reposts it to the community I tag.
Voila! I now have submitted my post to an aesthetic and curated community, for which anyone can collaborate with me on.
Within a day, we got lots of activity here – and several people are already interacting with photos posted there.

A federal judge in Maryland on Friday temporarily blocked key portions of #Trump’s executive orders targeting #diversity, #equity & #inclusion (#DEI) initiatives in the federal #government & #corporate America. US District Judge Adam B. Abelson granted a preliminary #injunction, blocking portions of #Trump’s orders to cancel federal #contracts concerning DEI & make government contractors certify that they do not engage in DEI practices that violate anti-#discrimination laws.
The order does not block the #DOJ & certain agency heads from drawing up lists of companies & universities to investigate, but blocks such #enforcement pursuant to the order. #Trump issued 2 EOs meant to eviscerate #DEI in the federal govt & neutralize it in the private sector & higher #education. The orders have already led to widespread purges of federal workers, while #corporations & universities grapple w/how to interpret the orders that target “equity-related” govt contracts & “illegal DEI”
Those suing to block the orders argue that such terms are poorly defined & violate the constitutional right to #DueProcess. They also allege that #Trump exceeded his authority by ordering agencies to terminate all “#equity-related” government #grants & #contracts because they had been funded by #Congress.
Moreover, plaintiffs take aim at a provision in which govt contractors & grantees must certify that they’re not engaging in #DEI programs that violate anti-#discrimination laws. The lawsuit contends that the provision, which threatens penalties under the False Claims Act, suppresses their constitutionally protected #FreeSpeech rights.
…On top of seeking the elimination of #DEI & “#environmental #justice” teams throughout the federal government, the #Trump EOs also directed agency heads to draw up lists of publicly traded #companies, #universities & #nonprofits to potentially *investigate* over certain DEI practices. The orders also conditioned government contracts & grants on companies & organizations certifying that they don’t engage in DEI practices that may violate non-#discrimination laws.
In response, companies such as #Google & #Deloitte have ended certain #diversity programs, such as #hiring goals based on demographics. Others in the #corporate space continue to reassess their programs as #Trump has begun to threaten investigations. On Feb 3, a coalition of orgs—the American Assn of #University Professors, the Natl Assn of Diversity Officers in Higher #Education, #Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, & the mayor & city council of #Baltimore —sued to block Trump’s orders.
They contend that #Trump’s EOs have already cause harm. E.G., the Natl Assn of #Diversity Officers in Higher #Education says the vagueness of the EOs have left members w/ “untenable” choices: certifying that they won’t engage in prohibited #DEI at the risk of getting slapped w/penalties, or censoring themselves to avoid govt scrutiny. The EOs, the group alleged in a recent court filing, are “breeding fear & already forcing irreversible harm by chilling core #PoliticalSpeech & academic #freedom.”
They can draw up lists and investigate while they wait, so the chilling effect will continue. Even if they are eventually blocked from doing this, it has achieved its desired effect with less effort.

@Chris Trottier Glad you're okay! People had such different experiences across the city! I heard it more than felt it in East Van. A bunch of friends said there was violent shaking. A friend who was downtown had no idea that anything had happened at all.
I was just in an #earthquake! It was confusing. I kinda thought that there were pipes bursting downstairs or something. I more heard it than felt it and had no idea it was an earthquake until someone texted me. Very different experience in different parts of the city. I have friends about a 10 min bike ride away that said their whole building was shaking intensely!

not sure where to post feature requests but I've noticed a growth in promotions on Pixelfed. Is that something to be encouraged, ignored or discouraged?
Personally, I'm mainly bothered by commercialization, particularly if it overwhelms the other content, so I'd be up for discouraging it.
Also, Markdown (raised by others previously) seems like a good, user centred way for people to express themselves efficiently. The world of comms elsewhere has evolved this richness (bold, italic, lists & bullets etc), so why not the Fediverse too?

You've raised an incredible amount of money, which shows that people have confidence in you and believe you when you say you want to make this a real community effort.
It's okay if your software is open and it has flaws. But it's not okay if you keep this cycle of hyping up something for months (years, now?) and when push comes to shove you just continue doing things on your own.
1) this should not be an excuse to keep the source code closed. If other instances start pushing too much video, admins can just defederate them.
2) Please avoid reinventing yet-another wheel. Inventing is fun, but forcing others to use your inventions all the time is not. Webtorrents are already a thing. IPFS is already a thing. Just pick one solution that is content addressable and makes distribution scale with the number of consumers.
#PeerTube works fine for large form video content? Just because I host my own PeerTube instance doesn't mean I have to download all the videos and share all the bandwidth. It all depends on who I have federated with and if I am watching at the time.
