Review: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

I’m not really much of a comic reader. I like comics, in general, but my standards are very high, especially for graphic novels. Although I had read Phantom, Captain America, and a few other comics before, my first graphic novel was Watchmen. When you sta

Concerned about Microsoft Windows 11 Recall? You should be.

Recall allows Microsoft’s Windows 11 Copilot+ devices to screenshot every action a person takes on their PC.

What can you do? Switching to Linux is the clear answer, but some don't know what distro to try.

DistroSea.com is a website that lets you run and test 60+ Linux distributions straight from your web browser.

Have fun!

Isn't that exactly what recall was intended for? So someone would never lose a detail? I don't know what your desktop looks like, but if it's anything like mine being able to use a vocal search to find some half remembered reference or what I did with the document or program or webpage or downloaded picture is pretty fucking useful, especially as I grow older.
in reply to Beggar Midas

@Beggarmidas

“an easy way to access information about your PC's activity snapshots...” is how this is branded.

However, it will be used to capture screenshots of emails or messages you may have deleted, as well as messages that disappear on platforms like Signal. Banking information, passwords, and medical records put on the screen will be recorded.

The feature that stores data in a database is done in plain text, attackers can use malware to extract the database and its contents.

Panel # 2 says "Comfy couch cushion," and shows an armchair with a pillow on it.

Panel #3 says, "Warm cat condo," and shows a small cat condo with a scratch post attached.

Panel #4 says, "Sock'" and shows a kitty sleeping on a sock, appearing to be very comfortable.

I guess there's no support, code downloads or errata then.

Read the alt text if it's unclear.

Isn't this just an extension of a previous Python feature? Wasn't there one which said something like "we *still* don't do type safety, but we'll let you write some code to pretend that you're being type safe"?
in reply to Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

@TimWardCam Um. Compile time checks with gradual typing? Is that what you're getting at? This feels like a holy way and I probably shouldn't, but... That's a pretty common & productive stance. Just the same as Typescript. Or Clojure! Even C# is doing it these days. Am I missing the point?
in reply to Jonathan Hartley

@tartley Yeah, it's holy war stuff. I personally prefer compile time strong typing.

(Within limits that is. Not as strong as Algol68C, which was so pedantic that it was almost impossible to write code that compiled. But that did have the advantage that if you ever managed to wrestle your code through the compiler it probably didn't have any bugs left in it.)

in reply to Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

@TimWardCam I see, thanks for helping me understand. I spent fifteen years "progressing" through C, C++ and C#, so I think I know what you mean about the warm glow of a perfectly typed program (do I?), but nowadays I look back on those with dread, compared to sprinkling some judicious types on the external API of a Python program. I'm a big TDD fan, which probably puts a thumb on the scales - I'm relying on that for some of the things types would do for me.
in reply to Jonathan Hartley

@TimWardCam and, nitpick, but of course Python *is* compile time strong typing. I think you mean static, is that right?
in reply to Jonathan Hartley

@tartley I may or may not have the correct terminology, but what I like is having the compiler tell me there's a type error rather than wait until, months later on the other side of the world, it fails in production.
in reply to Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

(removing devopscats). Right, I get that. I find that quite rare, but of course you are right, it does happen, and no doubt I've internalized and don't notice the cost of the techniques I've accumulated to minimize it. Peace!

Review: The Word for World is Forest

The Word for World is Forest is a science-fiction novel by Ursula Le Guin, although the science-fiction elements are very much just window-dressing. This story is very much an analogue for the US’ involvement in the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, the story has all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Right from the first chapter, Le Guin makes her opposition to the war evident.

At the ripe age of 42 I finally buckled and got myself a car. It was secondhand, fuel-efficient and I had to swear off ever flying again and start eating more vegan to, at least somewhat quieten my coal-black carbon conscience.
But boy, my world opened up when I did not have to rely on public transportation to go on adventures.
The first stop was the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tøndermarsk in Denmark.
Dykes, sluices, and pumping stations compete against the tides. The resulting marshes and wetlands attract millions of migratory and indigenous birds and provide breeding and feeding grounds for a variety of birds.

Thank you very much, I will.
I'll try to make more descriptive Alt texts too. I learnt how to add them earlier this week, and just now realized I can write quite a bit more than just the names of the critters and places. There doesn't seem to be a character limit on posts.

in reply to skribe

And here’s why I think the nurses in the video were just morons. There is anti-semitism out there but the people trying to make a name for themselves “finding” it are utter cunts.

Question - from a new user

Ello folks! I've recently joined the Friendica universe, and I'm still figuring out how it all works.

I've followed my other Fedi accounts with this one, so that I can boost things on here

But... Not all the posts/toots are visible. When I check the updates of my friends, where my own profiles are in, it shows some of my other posts. When I load the profile time-line of the account, it shows some of the posts.

Any reason why it doesn't show all the latest ones? Is it a setting that I need to change?

Thanks in advance for your help! 🌹

are 51% of the population
but 70% of the poor
and 83% of single parents
doing 66% of the work
producing 50% of the food
but earn just 11% of the pay
and own only 1% of the land

In case you wondered why we still need feminism!
