Playing a bit o' this and a bit o' that on your radios now. 100.5fm or Stream.wowfm.org

04/10/16 - For a decent amount of time, every Tuesday evening, come rain or come shine, we did a radio show on our local community radio station. Turns out a recording of this show is still online, here: radioactiveinternational.org/t…

First post

First post on Friendica!

Trying out as many federated services as possible.

Recent MTG cards I got!

Gremolata muthafucka

3/10/206 - I'd made some gremolata. Delicious.

It's a nice pic. It made me think, "Must make some gremolata!"

I reckon these close-up food pics were taken on my Canon DSLR, rather than the crappy phone camera.

Here it comes again

03/10/16 - One of the nice things about living where I live is running along the foreshore. In fact, I have run up and down its length so often that I completely take it for granted.

One of the things that I like most about it is when you can see a weather front coming in across the ocean. That's what's happening in this pic.

There'll be a lot of this type of photo as we go along, I expect.

Some experimentation with Chaos Game.

For those unfamiliar with Chaos Game, it's a mathematical experimentation (not really a "game") which applies some constraints to randomness, so order and pattern will emerge from it.

For example: you have an equilateral triangle and you start at the topmost vertex of it. You randomly choose between the three vertices, then you place a point exactly in the middle between the current coordinates and the chosen vertex. You repeat the process indefinitely, choosing another vertex and placing a point midway between the current coordinates (it's now a place inside the triangle) and the chosen vertex. Gradually, you'll start to notice a pattern, in this exact case, you'll end up with a Sierpinski triangle.

The more random and unbiased the randomness, the more quality the end result will have.

You can change parameters. For example, you can change the geometrical shape (e.g. a pentagon instead of a triangle), or you can change the ratio (i.e. how far from the current coordinate to the next coordinate: instead of going half the way, you can choose to go 1/3 (0.3333...) of the way, or you can even extrapolate past the next coordinate with a ratio bigger than 1). You can choose to not repeat the previous coordinate, or you can choose to not choose a neighboring vertex, and so on... Different constraints will result in different results, sometimes a fuzzy cloud of dots, sometimes a pattern.

It's interesting to see patterns emerging from randomness.

(I tried to send two pictures, but one of them got an error while I tried to upload...)

A Few Hobbies and Likes

This is by no means comprehensive, but here are some of my interests. Drawing, writing, reading, movies, art shows, readings, supporting my community arts center, Little Libraries, historical costuming, gadgets, D&D 5e (I'm on both Roll20 and D&DBeyond), most music except for metal, jazz, and rap with a particular fondness for Irish folk music, crochet, fountain pens, embroidery, scifi/fantasy, video games, board games, foods of many cultures, tea, cats, opossums, and I write and publish zines. There's more, but just trying to think of it all would take a while. I don't get out a lot because I'm disabled, but I have a rich online life and have made some really good connections so far.

Things I have no interestt in seeing:
Politics, posts in foreign languages that I don't understand, posts with obscenities, bickering over who joins what network, posts about what leaders of various networks do, vegan activism/ promotion, images without descriptions, world affairs (non-Western), posts about mental health, etc.

Things I am Constantly Seeing
Politics, posts in foreign languages that I don't understand, more politics, posts with obscenities, bickering over who joins what network, posts about what leaders of various networks do, yet more politics, vegan activism/ promotion, images without descriptions (very rare here, thankfully), still more politics, world affairs and wars (non-Western), posts about mental health, and you guessed it, even more politics! At least I don't see all of the inspirational/love yourself, or religious posts. Those are just as annoying.

Posts I Would Like to See:
Animals (especially cats and birds), plants, insects, high culture (theatre, classical music, fine dining, literature, fashion, etc.), cooking/recipes, history, science for non-scientists, technology (not just how to write websites or who's doing what in the Fediverse), audio games, good news, interesting discussions, people's daily lives (yes, I know this is not Dreamwidth), etc.

So trial two for #friendica to see how things work while testing out a new app. The one thing that I like about it is the longer posts, so I can list recipes and such. I just don’t know if I will use it as much as #mastodon, so guess I will see how it goes.

The more I read from vegans, the more I think they're stark raving mad. Fortunately, most are not dangerous. They're just ridiculous. I suppose they create a cheap form of amusement. But if there are any level-headed ones out there, these others definitely make it difficult for them to be taken seriously.

I may have been pissed, but I'm still practical.

3/10/16 - A screenshot of a recent drunk online purchase. You can't beat a good shopping bag.

Looking back, after something like six years' sobriety, it's quite shocking to see how central alcohol was to my life.

As it turned out, these bags were pretty crappy.

Belgrado

02/10/16 - The final post from what was a busy Sunday, shows the post-post punk band Belgrado from Barcelona, playing at The Metro in Adelaide. (I had to consult a friend with more memory than me to recall the name, to be honest).

I do remember that they were quite good, and the singer's blonde bob swished about quite magnificently.

These posts from, like nine years ago, also show how far phone cameras have come in that time.

BYO Vinyl Afternoon

02/10/16 - A combination of two posts from the same event: ]Duncan saves the day and plays a blinder and Early season's greetings, I think. Two pics from the BYO vinyl do at the Kings Head in Adelaide. If I recall, one of the needles broke and Duncan had to run home and fetch his before playing his set of Northern Soul. The picture of Charlotte and Mark shows what a boozy affair this was. There were also two short videos of me and Charlotte playing tunes, but I can neither work out how to download from Insta or find the originals at this stage,

Deleting 2 years of reels from facebook in 10 minutes

I posted a lot of #reels to #instagram between 2022 and 2024. At the time, my instagram and #facebook accounts were linked and any IG reel was also create under my facebook account. Today I found js code that will delete all your photos and modified it to delete my reels. It was a little sad to watch them go - especially the ones of my pets and garden. Oh well. I still have to deal with then on instagram, but that's for another day.

Shit, man skal være smooth-brained for ikke at synes at den pump-n-dump memecoin er ren snyd og bedrag.

Facebook to Friendica

I've been on Mastodon and Pixelfed for some time now. Since deleting all my "for profit" social media accounts I am very happy and excited to be on Friendica. Hopefully I can ween people off the for-profits and come to this gorgeous place.

Militant Kindergarten is a 15-week seminar that is part of a larger project of militant formation through group study, analysis, and discussion. During Militant Kindergarten, we read and study especifismo, a revolutionary current of anarchism coming from Latin America that, today, has become relevant around the world. We do this primarily by reading Social Anarchism and Organisation by the FARJ (the Anarchist Federation of Rio de Janeiro) and our own condensed version of the text called “104 Steps to Recovery of the Social Vector”. By reading the main text on our own and the abridged version together, we aim to refine and develop our understanding of anarchist theory, strategy, and militancy. From our close readings, we plan to discuss precise expressions, concepts, and theories.

This study will be rigorous and challenging, so it’s important that we practice collective solidarity with fellow participants. We encourage everyone to reach out to others to discuss kindergarten and build relationships that will last beyond this project. Our objective is as much about relationship building as it is about gaining knowledge. This is why we see value in combining radicalizing and radicalized people in the same learning process.

The Center for Especifismo Studies (CES) aims to create a dependably safe and welcoming environment for learning and participating. All of the organizers have attended this seminar in the past, and after finishing the sessions, we invite anyone who’s interested to join us in organizing future Militant Kindergartens.

Greetings, everyone!

Finally, I found a place in the Fediverse to have a blog. I've been looking to replace a lot of things. I recently quit Instagram and FB and replaced them with pixelfed and BlueSky. I quit Shitter back when Muskrat first bought it. yes, you might see some profanity on occasion here. Get over it, I'm an adult. This is going to be a place to share my thoughts, opinions, and sometimes even reviews of things/places/services. I don't pull punches, and I will not be doing reviews for remuneration. I also don't put up with BS. This is my blog, if you see something you don't agree with, the Fediverse and the world is a big place, move on.

That being said, I have a lot of eclectic interests and hobbies, so there's bound to be something interesting to read here at one point or another. Also, I use alt-text on photos and I rarely if ever use emojis because I want this to be an accessible blog. If you aren't aware, the screenreaders that some visually impaired people use read emojis as a string of symbol names or gibberish, which is overwhelming and annoying AF to listen to. I don't use one, but a friend let me listen to hers. Holy crap at what she has to put up with. I'ma make it easy for people.

Nice to meet you! Say hi, especially if we share an interest! And hey, try to make the world a better place for everyone, okay? Kindness doesn't cost you anything.

in reply to DesertHarper

It appears we have at least one hobby in common. I love electronics. I have a few Arduino and ESP-32 project kits and I love playing with robotics.

I am very new to the Fediverse though seeing you can categorize your posts I suppose blogging would not be as bad as on fb? I usually use my personal website for my blogging and then share the blogs to social media.

By the way if you are interested freehosting.com/ is the only truly free host I have found. They do not inject ads into your content either. I have paid a one time fee for a few extra addons to my account though other than the SSL (which I would recommend to everyone) you may not need one.

in reply to Unus Nemo

Good to know should I need that in the future, thank you. I don't really have a webpage and am trying to limit the new things I sign up for, ha ha. I've never really built electronics, but I'm capable of putting together a computer without help. But I do find gadgets and such fascinating. Nice to meet you!

I'm frustrated with the fact that only public posting works on this server right now.

Nothing I post with a more limited scope, like to "Friends" or "Mutuals" etc., is visible to anyone else, and I can't see anything posted by anyone else that isn't public. Nor do Direct Messages seem to work. On other social platforms I rarely post publicly. I primarily post with limited scope to my network or DM someone.

That's how I want to use Friendica, but right now I can't. It seems weird to me that I can post publicly and get engagement from other servers, even other federated platforms, but I cannot communicate privately or in limited scope with anyone on the SAME server. You'd think it would be the other way around?

As it is, I can't really bring anyone else to this server from Facebook until it is working properly, and they are frankly losing interest. They're all going over to Bluesky instead even though it's more like Twitter than Facebook. 😕

The main reasons I picked this server were that it seems to be on proper hosting rather than on someone's home hardware and is operated by non-profit organization rather than an individual, and - unlike a LOT of Friendica servers - it was open to new users. But until it works right I can't recommend it or use it the way I used Facebook. I don't want to have to migrate to another Friendica server and I definitely don't want to try running one myself.

I know the server admin is desperately trying to fix it. This post is not a dig at him. But at this point, if wiping the server and starting over would fix it, even if I had to re-sign up, I'd be okay with that. I just want everything to work!

Feiffer was best known for illustrating the children's classic "The Phantom Tollbooth." His loopy lines left a lasting mark on art, literature and film.

Has everyone except Dreamwidth and the makers of TweeseCake forgotten how to make an edit page/option that is actually easy to use? It's an absolute mess on the Friendica page itself, so that it could take me up to ten minutes just to be able to edit a post, and Enafore, which is supposed to be an improvement on Semafore has an edit page that is completely inaccessible with NVDA. It just says "Dialogue". Whatever happened to choosing "edit" and having a normal page open, with edit boxes, combo boxes, and a "save" button? See Dreamwidth's page for a perfect example of this, both for creating and editing posts.

dreamwidth.org/

TweeseCake also works wonderfully, but it only allows you to go back so far in your own posts. There is no way to enter a link and have TweeseCake open it.
